Winter 2022 Guide to Boston-Area Restaurant Openings | Eater Boston

"I visited the casual seasonal-sourcing bowl spot that emphasizes vegetable-forward green and grain bowls (with some chicken, beef, and salmon options), seating about 40 with seasonal sidewalk seating and daily lunch-and-dinner service." - Rachel Leah Blumenthal

Google
By far the best lunch spot near MIT - I ate here very often during undergrad. The food is freshly made, flavorful, and satiating, yet it is also healthy and does *not* cause bloating. It's affordable, roughly ~$13 for a bowl with the student discount, which is cheaper than the school meal plan. Overall, perfect fuel for the grind.

This is probably the best lunch spot around the MIT area! It gives you the perfect balance of protein, carbs, and sugar! Also it is reasonably priced and fresh! My server Matt, was very kind and offered me a student discount!! He was great and answered my questions about my food selections!

The staff is super friendly and welcoming! The food also never misses! Some of my top favorite are the hot honey chicken broccoli, and the mac & cheese 😊😊

It’s always nice to grab some food whenever I’m in the area. It makes it so easy to get something healthy because pretty much everything is delicious. The staff is always friendly and attentive especially the twins haha. On top of that, it’s reasonably priced. All around good spot.

I absolutely love this Dig location! I’ve stopped by a few times while attending physical therapy nearby, and every visit has been such a bright spot in my day. I’m currently on crutches, and the other day, the team surprised me by covering my meal… such an incredibly kind gesture! The staff and manager truly go above and beyond, and their warmth makes this place feel special. The food is amazing, but it’s the people here who make it unforgettable.

Yelp
ORIGIN: Dig originated in Manhattan in 2011 and has expanded to several East Coast states. LOCATION: This Dig location is near Kendall Square. The address represents three sides of an "end cap" of multi-story buildings, making use of GPS misleading. The entrance to Dig is at a quiet side street, making pick up to be a thankfully easy task. EXPERIENCE: During Spring 2023 I was first introduced to Dig through a Connecticut YES experience. I was so impressed that I had reported in my review a plan to place a large order during an MIT event scheduled the following year. The event I was responsible for had sixty people who wanted to have lunch included in the registration price. On the online order form I noticed that several dishes are recommended for take out. I spoke with Matt at the location a week in advance, and he expressed confidence that the Saturday team could easily handle preparing the order for 11:30 AM pick up. He also noted that MIT had recently placed a far larger order than mine, and suggested avoiding custom combinations if I needed to pick up shortly after shop opens. Attendees selected from four established dishes (Avocado Grain, Tofu, Crispy Chicken, and Roast Chicken), which was aligned with Matt's advice to avoid customized bowls, yet represented all popular dietary restrictions (e.g. vegan, gluten-free, nut-free). A colleague and I arrived at 11:30 and Mauricio and Floyd were in the process of packing the assembly line of dishes. Having labeled covered individual containers made it easy to distribute and ensure food was equitably distributed... especially given it was anticipated that attendees arrive at different times -- even after the scheduled lunch hour. Event attendees reported pleasure in having a healthy and flavorful lunch (typically lunch at these events pivot around deli sandwiches). Some inquired about where I had placed the order. In the end Dig contributed to the MIT event experience and attendees were introduced to Dig. I would not have known about Dig if it was not for being introduced via Yelp Elite Squad experiences. TIP: Enroll in rewards program to receive points towards free dishes.

Yelp
Super friendly staff members! Really good portion! Liked all the sides and most of the protein options (except chicken breast was a little try and lacks flavor)

Yelp
I love Dig, and I recently had a delicious catered lunch from this location. They have plenty of well-labeled vegan options and everything tastes fantastic. I particularly love the kale cashew caesar salad!

Yelp
I was stuck waiting for an hour for my food. It finally arrived me being so excited to try dig for the first time, on a healthy journey and I was met with undercooked chicken, it was still pink made me throw up and lost all my appetite. I am heading to the doctors now. I would never recommend this place to anyone. Not your worst enemy.

Yelp
Dig has real food - herbed Chicken, sweet potatoes, roasted potatoes... to name a few. Healthy comfort food. My favorite is the sweet potatoes. I also use Dig for catering at the office downtown. Ordering is easy, deliveries are on time and I always get a follow up email asking about the service. Plus, my employees love it!

Yelp
A nice place for a quick healthy bite at Kendall square. build your own salad, or have a crispy chicken sandwich. The place is neat. The food is fresh and reasonably priced. I really like their kale salad, which has a spicy vibe.

Yelp
Delicious, nutritious and wholesome protein bowls that leave you feeling super satisfied after a long day of hackathons at MIT! So many options of yummy sides to pick from too, including the kale salad, Mac and cheese, farro and brown rice base etc. This was the perfect spot for our large group that had a variety of dietary restrictions since there were options available for everyone. Highly recommend their ginger mint lemonade as well. Wish we had a place like this back in Seattle. Will be back here again!

Yelp
It's nice to have some tasty veg*n options. Usually that doesn't always work out in your favor, but here it does. You can make your own which is what I prefer to do whenever I go to these types of places. Pick & choose the veggies you like over the base either salad or grain & add dressing, easy peasy. It's good to eat healthy & get something that makes you feel good after eating it & doesn't break the bank like some other places. I would say the main issue I have is the tiny plastic dressing containers, why is that necessary? Why can't you just add it to the bowl? How much could be saved from the landfill not to mention costs for these stupid plastic vessels that are a pain in the ass to get dressing out of. I will also mention that they change up their veggie options since they gp w/ the season. So check it out, various locations throughout the area.

Yelp
This is a brand new edition to the lunch bowl scene in Kendall Square. It joins the likes of Cava, Sweetgreen, and Chipotle. The vibe is more SweetGreen meets healthy comfort food. They have greens, but for the most part the sides are very hearty and mostly hot. It's comfort food you can feel good about eating. The price point is comparable to Sweet green and Cava. If you sign up for an online account, they'll give you $5 off an order (not a paid promo). The good: - Brand new so no wait or lines at peak lunch time! - clean, inviting place - low key staff - lots of choices, decent portion size - garlic aioli is delicious! - they don't charge for bags. - super close to MIT East Campus - Nice seating area The just ok: - food itself was ok. Nothing to write home about. - the cauliflower and Mac n cheese were a bit more charred than I like, bordering burnt. - meatballs were beef and chicken, but also had very noticeable filler (looked like some rice and veg), not bad but interesting. Clever way to use leftovers? The bad: - 2 of the employees handling food were maskless. There's still a mask mandate in Cambridge and even sans mask mandate, it's just good hygiene for those handling/cooking food to not be breathing their germs on it. I'll be back to try another bowl!

Yelp
Amazing bowls. They have lots of options catering to all food groups. I ordered a make your own veggie only bowl, it came with lots of veggies, greens, farro and pasta. The sauces were amazing too, you get to choose 3 of them. Sadly avocado was missing altogether from my bowl. And the person who was making my bowl had their mask on their chin. Taste was a 5 on 5, but one star less for the missing avocado and mask issue. I will definitely visit again.

Yelp
Ordered on Ubereats and though the order was for Half-Farro/Half-Rice Maple Glazed Tofu bowl with kale-caesar and cannellini beans side, the actual order had broccoli side. This though the order included a separate side of charred broccoli. Do the preparers actually read the order while they prepare it or do they randomly throw in whatever is left over or in excess? Have had issues with online order multiple times with this location.

Yelp
I always pass by Dig and decided to finally give it a try. The food tasted healthy and fresh. I ordered one of the popular menu items, but next time I would try building my own. I really liked the indoor/outdoor feel with the windows fully open. I'll be back!

Neena B.

Yelp
Got a hot honey chicken Mac bowl with kale Caesar and broccoli - not only was the food delicious and hot but Matt (my server) and the team were incredibly kind. 10/10!

Candice C.

Yelp
Ordered takeout, loved the food especially broccoli and salmon, portion size was a little small for even a girl though, recommend ordering sides.

Yelp
General Overview: Dig has always been one of my favorite grab-n-go places in town. It's filling, fresh, healthy, and also fast! Ambiance: I LOVED the ambiance of this store, it looked so modern, the bathrooms are so clean as well. Food: The food tasted tasted like general Dig food. I got the extra avocado and pesto sauce which really enhanced my bowl but since 2017, Dig has never disappointed me!

Emily C.

Yelp
Food was good but the portion was ridiculously small. I don't plan on coming back until they serve decent size portions.

Yelp
I was staying at the Marriott nearby and was too tired to venture far for dinner. Dig was open late and offered a reliable and hot meal. I stepped in around 7:30pm and had my standard bowl of half farro/half mixed greens with roasted chicken breast, charred broccoli, and mac & cheese. Staff were quick and friendly. I had lunch at around 1pm, so I was pretty hungry by this point. My bowl was really filling and really hit the spot after a long travel day.

Yelp
i got a custom bowl: - 1/2 greens and 1/2 farro (although there were barely any greens) -- farro was really good - carrots (super tasty) - broccoli (a bit too large and charred for my liking, but good flavor wise) - asparagus (really good! who wouldve thought mint would be good with asparagus??) - charred chicken -- amazing. chefs kiss. tender. total came down to about $15 which is a lot given its smaller portion size compared to cava and sweetgreen.

Yelp
Had an amazing bowl from Dig today, the guy serving me was very helpful in describing all the options. I took it home after work and it was my favorite dig bowl I've had so far (and healthiest which is crazy). The kale base was great, the chicken breast was super juicy and tender, and the garlic aioli and hot sauce went perfectly with the other veggies I got.

Becca Z.

Yelp
This place is so effing good. Hit the spot. I'm vegetarian and trying to reduce gluten and this was perfect. The maple tofu is delicious. Everything tastes so fresh. I hope to come here again.

Kerry B.

Yelp
Greeting was very welcoming and food looked very enticing. Server was very informative and helped me select a ver delicious bowl. Food was seasoned very well and was extremely tasty. Portion was very good and filling.

Yelp
I tried this for the first time via GrubHub while I was visiting the Cambridge area for dinner. Delivery took over an hour even though if I had walked to the store to pick it up, it would have taken only 20 minutes. I ordered their Classic Dig with the roasted chicken and sweet potatoes and veggies. When the order arrived, I noticed the lid was not securely fastened to the bowl and no napkin or plastic utensils were included, even though I had requested them when placing the order. Luckily, the hotel I was staying at had a dining area that had plastic knife and forks and paper supplies. The food itself was mediocre. It did not skimp on quantity, the bowl was quite stuffed and the serving was hefty. But when it came to taste, it was nothing to go out of your way and wait an hour for. I've had better rotisserie meals at Boston Market.

Yelp
Salmon is great! Love the open window walls and outdoor seating! Staff are so nice too:)

Yelp
Closes at 9pm, but stops cooking food and puts it in foil containers on their counter at 8. Not heated. Definitely wouldn't go after 7:30pm

David W.

Yelp
Awesome quality, good value for money. The steak and Tomato seasonal is great. Well worth a visit for a healthy lunch
