6 Underrated North Charleston Restaurants to Visit Now | Eater Carolinas

"North Park Grille is literally hidden behind a bridge and located next to one of the few remaining Piggly Wiggly grocery stores. But for those who like shooting pool while eating good bar food, this is the place. Do not mistake NPG for just another beer and wing spot, it even serves oven-baked pizzas from its North Charleston location that are worth the drive." - KJ Kearney

When we first got there, I ordered drinks at the bar while we were waiting for seating. Two drinks cost $18. I paid cash. When we were seated, the waitress was amazing, food was exceptional and we really enjoyed everything! Upon looking at my bill, the same round of drinks cost only $13. That’s a five dollar difference from paying cash to the Bartender!!! I should’ve never given the bartender a tip, as she already added a tip in for herself! And no, it wasn’t happy hour!!!

Google
Good vibes if you’re looking for a sports bar type atmosphere with a cool outdoor patio! The wings tasted great, but were pretty pricy at $12 for 6 and $22 for 12, and fries costed extra. My wife also loved the burger, and it was a pretty generous size! The menu was medium sized. Not too big and not too small. However, there are plenty of specials throughout the week that were advertised. We sat outside, which had a really cool vibe. Great spot to hang with friends on a good weather day. However, I stepped inside and the inside seating area looked pretty depressing. The waitress we had also seemed like she was in a slight rush, and wasn’t very talkative. Overall, it was a pretty good experience with some slight negatives. I would definitely go back with some friends for lunch! They also allow dogs out in the patio area, which is always a plus! My one message for the restaurant would be to make the wings cheaper please! But again, overall a good experience. My wife and I liked it.

Google
Awesome staff that really makes it a pleasure to watch games or just kick it on a lazy day. Shout out to Marie, K, Anna, both Abby’s, Jordan, and Vix and Cody.. Truly an all star team including management and the kitchen providing the best products possible for a reasonable price. Highly recommend the daily specials and the cheese curds, but everything is good!

Google
We came here because my buddy, who’s a big fan of this place, hyped it up and said the atmosphere was always great and so is the food. Unfortunately, that wasn’t our experience. The bartender seemed completely uninterested and inattentive, which killed the vibe from the start. On top of that, the food was a major issue. All three of us ordered the chicken bowl—and now, all three of us (including the friend that highly recommended it) have food poisoning less than 24 hours later. Extremely disappointing visit and definitely not what we were expecting based on the reputation

Google
Rainy day but the server did a great job! Had a group of 8 outside and she brought everything out very fast. Beer was solid went with the Michelob pitcher special $16 which was a good deal. Scholar burger was tasty, and the server suggested the tots which were perfect crunchy and a hint of salt!

Brooke S.

Google
It’s a cute place but smelled of smoke where we were sitting. There were two dark curly hairs in one of our plates (we have lighter hair). Another plate was a burger we asked to be cooked medium well but was rare. We are easy going but this was just gross.

David H.

Google
It was not a busy night, yet all our food arrived cold (very). It was a bit disappointing as we had heard such great stories of the place. Maybe one other group of two were there. The server came by once. The burger were lacking in every aspect. Just a disappointing experience.

Google
One of my go to places in the Charleston area. Always great atmosphere. Friendly staff and fellow customers. You can play games, dance, mingle and have a great selection of food and drinks. Inside or outside is accompanying. Come out and feel the heart of Charleston, I do.

Yelp
I came here to pass time, grab a snack, a drink and catch the game. I sat at the bar and the bartender was super sweet. I had my dog with me, so I ordered a chicken tender basket to share. The tenders came hot and juicy, not overcooked. The fries were good as well. I felt experimental, so took a chance trying the cotton candy cream ale. Not bad. I tasted the cotton candy at the first sip, then it pretty much faded away after. Anyway, I had a good visit here. I'll be back again.

Yelp
We've been in Park Circle the past 6 years and have seen several businesses come and go from the area, but DIG in the Park is one that has seen a lot of improvement over time. The covered patio makes it a go-to spot for watching sports or hanging with friends. Food and drinks are good and affordable, especially the brunch. The staff are SO kind and welcoming, especially to the dog crowd.
google avatar

Lisa A.

Yelp
Loved the patio here! Super dog friendly (we brought our dog, Buster, and he was a huge hit there!) and the food and cocktails were awesome! William took great care of us and the burger and margaritas were just the best! Buster even got some dog treats! Thank you!

Yelp
Decent lunch spot! I wanted to sit outside and they have a lot of options so i decided to try DIG in Park for the first time. I'm glad I didn't look at the reviews first because that might have fended me off. However, I had good service , good food, and a nice place to sit so no complaints here. I went with the lamb gyro and the lamb was cut thinly so it had a nice crispness to it. All in all not a mind blowing meal but it was a decent lunch for $18 (price including tip). I'll most likely return on another beautiful day to grab a drink and hang out.

Yelp
This place is great for a group. They have huge tables so it's easy for people to come congregate. I love how much of it's outside seating. The food is pretty good, I've had them mess up my order a few times but nothing is perfect.

Yelp
Dig in the Park offers in door and outdoor seating area. It is has a laid back restaurant the offers a variety of food. The staff are nice and helpful. The service was fast. As always I will give an honest review. I ordered the chicken bowl. The beans, prices and chicken were extremely dry, like they had been sitting under a heat lamp for a while. I am not one to send food back, but when the manager can by and asked my how everything was, I showed him my bowl. He offered me to exchange my meal for something else. I got the Philly Steak Sandwich. It was delicious, hot and fresh. Thank you to the staff for making a negative meal into a positive one. I will not hesitate to return to Dig in the Park.

Yelp
Came to watch the game. Nice outside patio with a bar and more seating and bar inside. Great selection of beverages. Employees were nice and inviting. Smashburger was awesome! I don't like thick burger patties so this was perfect to me. The burger was juicy and tender, cheese melted just right, and the bun was soft, but sturdy. The branding on the top was such a nice touch! Tater tots were good, could have been more fresh. The Bing Bang Boom shrimp were great! Nicely fried. The sweet & spicy chili sauce tasted as expected. Will be back!

Yelp
Good food, good service, great atmosphere! DIG has an awesome outdoor area that's perfect for watching football when the weather is nice. It's also covered so no need to worry about rain! My husband and I love going here to hangout and catch a game. The food is pretty good and we are always treated well by the staff. A great spot to visit for sure!

Yelp
We are here while visiting our oldest son. This was a fun place with great service. We came for live music, but I don't think we could hear the music where we were sitting, but seats were definitely limited that night. Food was ok (not amazing, but not bad), service was wonderful and the drinks were alright. It was nice, but I'm not rushing to go back.

Yelp
I will say I've had my ups and downs with DIG. I've been coming here for years and love to come in to watch games, hang at the outside bar, or on the weekends for DJs. For a while I had too many disappointing food experiences where the quality of the food was getting less and less. I kinda swore off eating there and would pop in for a drink here and there. Recently I was with friends and we stopped in after a concert nearby. They were getting food and I was tempted to join in. I let my guard down and got some chicken tenders with fries and some cheese curds that we all shared. I have to say the quality of the food has gone back up and everybody enjoyed their eats. It's only my first time dining there in a while, but it's back on my radar for Park Circle bar food.

Yelp
It was our first time here, and it was a gorgeous day for outdoor seating. There was plenty available at the bar, so we sidled up. The outdoor bartender was on the move, greeting, mixing drinks, serving, and continually checking on the several patrons in her territory. She was very friendly and warm, and could tell we needed menus and a minute. She presented the beer menu QR code and said she'd be happy to get anything from inside as well as what was at hand. I asked her if she could make a Michelada and even if I pronounced it wrong, she knew exactly what I meant and asked if I wanted it mild or spicy. I said a little spicy and she made it perfectly! So delicious I had 2. They were out of pretzels so I ordered wings. Hubby got a burger. The food took quite some time, but we were not in a hurry. It made our bartender feel awkward, though, and she checked on our order twice before it came out. The wings were decent, not overcooked and definitely spicy. I wouldn't go beyond "Hot" unless you're trying to hurt yourself. The burger was huge but cooked beyond medium, so it was a little dry. The meat was well-seasoned and he ate the whole thing. The tots were tots and most went home with us and got eaten later. The outdoor environment is easygoing and welcoming, with different sports on several screens and good 70s-90s pop/rock playing loud enough to keep others' conversations private. It seems like a great place to people-watch and wile away an afternoon.

Yelp
Nice spring & summer retreat from the heat with cold beverages. Bar service was good. Limited draft selection, but okay. They seem to excel in the mixed drink service, though I did not partake. I do wish they'd put the Kibosh on the vaping at the bar by customers. Someone else's exhalation of flavored nicotine & CO2 is not my happy place. Try harder.

Christopher W.

Yelp
My brother in town and we had burgers for dinner in inside bar. As always they were great: however, Kristen the bartender was even better. She took the time to talk with us and exchange sarcastic banter. All the free beers she gave us sure was a plus (a joke).
google avatar

Avis D.

Yelp
William is 3 days in working here and I would have never known!! He was phenomenal. Customer service... TOP TIER. I'm never disappointed by their food or drinks
google avatar

Aida C.

Yelp
What brought us here was the outdoor seating, dog friendliness and kid friendly menu. My husband and I also loved the beer list. I tried an Italian Ice sour and an Espresso Porter both were good. The staff were friendly and knowledgeable about the different drafts. Everyone loved their food and my veggie burger was amazing. Whether they make them themselves or just buy a really good brand it's definitely one of the best I've had at a restaurant.

Ashley T.

Yelp
William was our server and he was phenomenal! He was quick, entertaining and kind. Will be back to see him! Love the outdoor space and the steak bowl.

April H.

Yelp
The Food and Service were excellent. I had the Black and Blue burger and fries and a Mojito. Definitely will be back.
google avatar

Jeff R.

Yelp
It had been a while since we visited DIG in the Park. We went before spending an evening watching hockey games at the Ice Palace. I had a couple of beers and my better half ordered margaritas. She had the cheeseburger with tots and I had a couple of chili cheese dogs with onions. Our server was great fun, but service took a while.

Yelp
L-O-U-D!!!!! The staff saw us standing there and just kept walking past us. One employee was smoking a cigarette at the employee workstation inside the eating area. It's 2023- does that still happen?? It just felt a little trashy. The table wobbled. Dogs are allowed in the eating area. You cannot hold a conversation with the people at your table and the food is pathetic. Everything seams thawed and cooked to serve. Mozzarella sticks with terrible marinara. Also had the steak bowl. I ordered it without cooked peppers. Arrived with peppers. The waitress was hell bent on me knowing it wasnt her mistake. I just want my dinner. It arrived- no flavor. Bad last meal in Charleston. I would skip this place unless you want to play trivia or are a poor college kid.
google avatar

Yelp
Swing by this place after debating whether we should eat at EVo or Dig in the park, and we voted for DIG. The outdoor seating area was full so we ended up sitting inside and its kinda cold inside with the fan blowing above us. We waited for our food close to an hour and my husband biscuits and gravy came cold and he asked the waiter to bring in warmer gravy cos no body like cold biscuits and gravy. The hangover cure was good, I asked for my sunny side up egg but they scrambled it which was fine cos the seasoning was good and the fries were crispy. My daughter's shrimps and grits was good too but too spicy to her liking. My son's flat pizza was meh ...and we glad we ordered fries for him cos it was pretty much what he ate after waiting so long for lunch. Overall, we probably wont be back for food but great ambience for cold beer and drink's especially on the nice weather day like today.
google avatar

Nichole Z.

Yelp
Great little spot for outdoor seating and time with friends/family. We were able to quickly get a table for 6 and our server was amazing. She even made a mocktail for me. I just told her to surprise me and she was able to make something tasty that was better than a Shirley Temple. We ordered the cheese curds and buffalo cauliflower which were good and there was live music.
google avatar

Amy Lauren S.

Yelp
DIG (Daniel Island Grille) in the Park is a fun place to hear live music or go to trivia. Most seating is outdoors, with high-top tables for socializing as well as lower tables that are more accessible. The indoor area has a few tables, the bar, and TVs on the wall. The food here is bar food, and compared to other options just steps away (literally), it leaves a lot to be desired. I've eaten wraps, apps, and sides, and nothing has blown me away- it's not seasoned well. I won't order a meal here anymore- just drinks. DIG was here before Park Circle became cool, but what worked ten years ago doesn't work anymore. Even North Charleston's become a food mecca. Like all bars and restaurants, DIG's been hit hard by the pandemic and the worker shortage, and on my last visit, I believe two servers and one manager were running food to the whole restaurant. The employees here are rockstars and were working as hard as they could. Eat before you come, then go to DIG for a drink and the bands.

Yelp
We were a party of ten seated outside on a beautiful Sunday. First off, the waitress forgot to put in our order. When we asked her to check on it it took her fifteen minutes to get back to us. We waited over a hour for it to come out. Food was eh - cheesesteaks burnt and overcooked, sweet potato fries still cold on the inside, burgers with no taste and old, cold fries. One of the orders never came out. When we questioned her about it, she goes in and said she got the order wrong, ok, shizz happens. The check comes and there was an administration fee on the check. When we questioned her, she replies- oh, I don't know and people keep asking me. Um, hello, it's your job to know. We made her go find out what it was and came to find out it was the credit card fee automatically added to the bill. We said, we're paying cash, please remove it. Tells us they can't, it's part of the bill. After back and forth and us telling her it's illegal to do that, they finally took it off the bill. Word of warning - if you're paying cash, check for that fee that they automatically add and make them take it off. Better yet, go spend your money elsewhere, it's Charleston, there are plenty of better places to eat than here. It was close to the airport which is why it was chosen.

Yelp
If I had been writing this review last week, it would have been a 3 star review. I had only been into DIG a handful of times at night on the weekends, and had always felt the bartenders at the outside bar were rude and the drinks were only okay. I kept going there entirely because of friends wanting to go, and the nice outdoor atmosphere. This all being said, I stopped in for an early dinner this weekend and was so pleasantly surprised. I had the Hawaiian burger (with grilled chicken instead of a burger patty) and it was so good! Good enough to bump this up to a 4 star review. And our waitress was incredibly friendly. The DJ started around 8 and played good music, but it was a little difficult to have a conversation unless you were far away. All in, this weekend's experience has given me enough of a reason to give the late night another shot.

Yelp
Food is good. Little overpriced. I got the hamburger with the over easy egg. Burger was a bit overcooked. I wanted med. the service took awhile. Had to find the bartender for lunch. Food came out fairly quick. Fries were plain.
google avatar

Tasha F.

Yelp
Had a lunch with a group of friends during the week. There is outside seating, but with a heat index over 100° we sat inside. Our server was great and provided water as soon as each of us arrived. We didn't wait very long for our party of 5 adults and 1 child to receive our food. Everyone enjoyed our food, for the most part. One friend ordered the Jumbo Pretzel and Margherita Flatbread and said the Pretzel was too salty and she wasn't impressed with the Flatbread. My DIG Scholar Burger was cooked well and had good flavors. The ambiance isn't anything special. It's a bar, and everything was neat and clean.
google avatar

Yelp
I think DIG in the Park is a place you'd go for the atmosphere, and not the food. It seems like a great place to hang out and drink/have appetizers, but I personally didn't care for the food. The mozzarella sticks and fried pickles were pretty standard; no complaints there. My shrimp po boy looked wonderful, but it was very bland. I love bread (who doesn't?!), but it's a sad day when it's the only good part of a sandwich. My husband tried the Hawaiian pork tacos, and the ratio of pork to toppings was crazy. Soooo much greasy pork (see picture). Very little pineapple salsa. They left off the other toppings completely (cilantro, lettuce). The tots and fries looked great, but again, they fell flat. The service was decent. They were very attentive to refills and quick with the food. We had to wait a while for the check, but it was fairly busy at that point.
google avatar

Sam P.

Yelp
Nice outdoor bar with pretty good service. The one complaint I have & why I do not frequent this place often is so many of the customers smoke at the bar & the tables. I don't like trying to eat with smoke rolling in my face

Hunter G.

Yelp
Excellent service, great food, great service. Maddy keeps the good vibes coming. Excellent
google avatar

Lisa N.

Yelp
Highly recommended. Amazing food and great dog friendly atmosphere. Had a new server named Jada who was on her first day of the job and she was AMAZING!
google avatar

Jodie T.

Yelp
First time here, came to Charleston for the holiday. Very fun atmosphere, seating inside and out. Live music. Wide variety of sandwiches, tacos for a reasonable price. Highly recommend.

Michael W.

Yelp
We went to DIG today for brunch and we had the best service. A new girl, Lauren, was so attentive despite the restaurant being full. (And her first day at this location ) We will definitely be back and we hope that Lauren will be our server again!
google avatar

Whitney H.

Yelp
Been to Charleston several times but first time at Dig today. The place is great. Low key, great tunes, good drink selection and food is excellent quality for the price. Staff is personable and easygoing - our server Vix was great. Will be back here anytime I'm in the city.
google avatar

Matthew S.

Yelp
This is the best bar in Park Circle. I like others too, but out of all bars here, it is the most open and friendly. It's so easy to meet new friends here. NIce drink selection and the burgers are very good too! Kristen, the bartender, is amazing. She can keep a full bar happy and make it look effortless.
google avatar

Matthew B.

Yelp
I don't understand how DIG in the Park can have such a low overall rating. If you rate Dig on what it is, a sports bar, than it is 100% a 5 star establishment. The building itself is pretty tiny but the real reason to come here is the patio. Most of which is covered so even in inclement weather dig can still be enjoyed. In the winter they don't just put out the weird electric heaters but actual fire pits. There are a pleathers of tv's so even if you aren't a Carolina fan you can still watch your team of choice. The food menu is exactly what you would expect for a sports bar but guess what, it's a sports bar. I honestly I can't think of a finer sports bar in North Charleston. If you don't like DIG than stop dirtying up the page with your shit reviews and go get some potato skins TGI Friday's.
google avatar

B M.

Yelp
In a word, AVOID. Don't be lured in by the open air atmosphere and multiple TV options for a beer drinking, back slapping good time. Upon arriving we were one of six or seven tables seated, in various states of the dining process. It should be noted that we arrived for brunch approximately 30 minutes after they opened. Menus were provided, but when asking questions following our review you would've thought we were speaking Greek. We made our selections, a nacho plate appetizer, a hangover biscuit, and French toast with sausage. It was easily 35 minutes until we received the nacho plate. At that length of time you would expect something pretty substantial - not so. Lettuce that wasn't chopped or shredded, but looked as though chunks of ice burg hand been hand torn and dumped on the plate, also topped by what the were passing off as nacho cheese, but it was pink! I honestly thought they'd topped it with Thousand Island dressing. Oh, and it was COLD. Then came the hangover biscuit ( a split biscuit topped with a chicken strip, grit cake, bacon, an egg and onion gravy). While haphazardly put together the flavors were ok. But it was COLD. Lastly the French toast and sausage...it's difficult to screw up French toast, but I'm happy to say it was decent. The sausage however, zero taste. None. Imagine unseasoned hamburger that was rinsed under water and you'd have this sausage patty. And, you guessed it, both were COLD. The staff seemed to wander aimlessly in circles, with some haste, but in circles nonetheless. Unfortunately, we would not return and would encourage you to steer clear.

Yelp
We are long time residents of SC and have been coming to the DIG for many years and they have always been slow but today was the worst experience we have ever had. We were greeted well and seated quickly, but it took almost 15 minutes just to get our drink order in. From there it just continued to go downhill with one issue after another. One of our party came back from the toilet and said he couldn't believe how bad a shape it was in and that it was disgusting. It took another 20 minutes for our waitress to come back to get our food order. The table next to us must have had a great waiter as they sat down after us and we're getting their food by the time we were just finding our waitress to order. About an hour later the food for the kids arrived and we assumed ours was right behind but we were wrong. It was another 30 minutes before it showed up and more than half the order was wrong. One of our party had to send hers back and it took another 30 minutes for it to come out. By that time the table next to ours had already rotated two more times. But the real winner of the trip was when we asked to speak to the manager. She tried to pass the buck onto the fact it was busy, the kitchen is really slow, the staff is just getting trained up etc, etc, etc! At no point did she take any blame. When we told her it's the managers job to handle these issues she told us we were free to not come back. We told her don't worry we will not nor will any of the companies I work with!

Yelp
Crap service, crap food, great location and outdoor space. Nobody pays attention to you after seating.
google avatar

Ara A.

Yelp
First time here, sat outside and for some reason they allow people (obnoxious woman) smoke. Just gross. Hubby had the dig plate which was just previously frozen breakfast potatoes (how lazy do you have to be not to be able to cut fresh potatoes) bacon, eggs. I had the shrimp n grits with onion bacon gravy. All the food was average nothing great just basic.
google avatar

Karis M.

Yelp
The drink was great. I went just to have one. And Sex on the beach is my go to drink when I'm not sure what I feel like. The mozzarella cheese sticks are good my friend had the shrimp but they don't look like the name the menu describes. Lol the service wasn't too bad it was a Saturday night so I expect some delays considering all the customers coming In.

Yelp
Gosh I am sad zero was not an option... this has to he the biggest dive, run down place I have seen in a while. From the moment we walked in and bouncers were glaring, to being seated at the nasty, filthy bar- I can't believe I stayed. The bar mirrors were gross, counter sticky and wet (bartender didn't care), even the shelves with supplies were a mess. It didn't help we also had a view of the kitchen covered in mold with dishes piled high. I wouldn't eat there if my life depended on it after what we saw. The bartender was flighty, we ordered a mule (mule cups right im front of us) and she told us she couldn't make mules? Okay...went with bottled beer which seemed safe. Used the bathroom and another run in with a bouncer who rudely exclaimed he should have first dibs at the bathroom and not have to wait. Yikes it went from bad to worse. Don't waste your time here, there are so many amazing places in North Charleston that this place isn't worth a second glance.

Dennis C.

Yelp
Friendly atmosphere! Good prices and large portions. The service was wonderful. It has in and out door accommodations.

Zohra B.

Yelp
Popped in here to grab lunch and a beer. Saddled up to the bar inside bc the outside tables were pretty full. All servers were using mask, which was great to see. Ordered a white tai beer and a medium-rare cheeseburger topped with a fried egg and side of tater tots. Came out perfect! Hot, fresh and delicious. Couldn't finish the whole burger - it's pretty huge, and the side of tater tots is more than generous. Made for delicious left overs.

Yelp
#Juanita took great care of me. Drinks were strong and cold, the food was a showstopper! Delicious and filling.

Yelp
I've only been here once, but I had a blast! I came on a Saturday around 7 and stayed until 9:00. As I walked up, the patio area was pretty packed. They had a DJ and for the most part, he was playing pop and edm. It definitely put me in the mood to dance. They are undergoing some renovations to their patio area and I could be wrong, but it looked like they very building a stage and a second outdoor bar. So with that said, it's pretty obvious this must be one of Park Circle's more popular spots. As for the inside, it wasn't nearly as spacious as the patio area, but it was a nice atmosphere. It was actually the complete opposite of the patio. They have plenty of tvs and there was music playing, but it was lot quiter. Lastly, I like that the crowd was very diverse and the drinks were pretty good, as well as the prices. I didn't get to try any food, but everything that I saw looked good. I'm definitely looking forward to visiting again.

Yelp
Denasia will be the only reason I come back! She's the best bar tender! It can usually be hit and miss with the others. So happy to have met her.

Yelp
Dog friendly! Amazing food and great service! I loved the layout and I can't wait to come back for more. Ordered the Buffalo chicken wrap with no buff and fries. The food was delicious! Very generous portion size

Angel V.

Yelp
My friends and I come out to the Dig in the park for a good time. We had the best hospitality service we've ever had so far in Charleston, and our last since we live in a different city. I have to say Olivia was the best bartender we had in our trip. Five stars for her to accommodate us!

Alec J.

Yelp
Food was good, steak tacos a solid medium rare and fried pickles, the staff was friendly and good seating, but they put a Guinness in a plastic cup.
