10 Spicy Portland Dishes That Deliver the Heat - Eater Portland

"This dish, with historical ties to Portugal and India, has changed over time from a more traditionally tangy sauce to the famous face-melting curry found in restaurants today. This rich and spicy sauce relies on generous doses of red chilies, vinegar, ginger, and cumin, which permeate hearty and moist chunks of lamb and potato. Dil Se is open seven days a week for takeout and delivery, but is not currently offering dine-in service." - Ron Scott

Google
(Uber eats order) I ordered masala dosa and Gobi Manchuria. The food was actually pretty decent. The dosa was not very crispy. However, that's probably not the restraunt's fault. My Uber eats order took about 40min to arrive, so dosa would obviously not be as crispy as eating at the restraunt. Otherwise, it tasted good. But, i dint like the quantity of chutney. It was too less. Also, it would have been good if there was both peanut chutney and coconut chutney. However, the chutney and the sambar that cane with the dosa tasted good :) I would have prefered everything to be a bit more spicy, but it wasn't a big deal.

Google
This is one of my favorite spots for Indian cuisine in downtown Portland. It’s currently only a to go restaurant which is a shame, but the service is great and the food is amazing. Be warned, spicy does mean spicy here unlike most Portland restaurants. I thoroughly enjoyed the curry, and the portion sizing is quite fair for the price. (See receipt)

Google
Tried this place for the first time. Found them through Uber Eats. Wanted to dine in but this place is only takeaway. Ordered Guttivankaya Curry, Chicken 65, Chicken and Egg Fried Rice and Gobhi Manchurian. Curry was ok but the other dishes were too good. You could get that real Indian Chinese taste. Everything was yummy, rightly priced and well portioned Recommended!!

Google
The place is decent, they food is good but it can use a little more spices to bring the flavors out. The dosa was good but the sambar was just decent. The samosa had right amount of potato but there were no spices in the potato filling. The chicken Manchurian was good. Overall I think they did a pretty good job. If i had an option i would have given them a 3.5 stars. I would definitely be returning to try their lamb curry.

I stopped by this restaurant en route from Washington Park and found that currently, the restaurant only offers takeout. However, the owner, a kind lady, allowed me to sit in their dine-in area while my order was being prepared. I ordered in bulk for a couple of meals for two, and the owner kept me engaged in polite, friendly conversation. She even made a few recommendations for day trips from Portland upon request and shared her personal experiences and insights while I waited for my order. The food was packed neatly with multiple side chutneys that came with the order. All dishes tasted excellent, but my husband's favorite was the sambhar, which had the right amount of sweetness and sourness. We tried their uttapam, mysore masala dosa, samosas, veg hakka noodles, butter paneer (which comes with a side of rice), and chutneys (coconut, mint/coriander, tomato, and tamarind). The noodles were made spicy per our requested customization. However, be aware that it carries a solid punch and can be really hot if you're not used to that kind of heat. Overall, it was a great experience. Although the food is on the expensive side, the excellent customer service, staff's friendliness, and delicious taste completely offset the cost-quantity ratio aspects. We would definitely visit this place again if we're ever in the city.

Google
We've been ordering food from here for 2 years. We've always enjoyed it, very tasty and a real treat for the family. Today the food tasted totally different lacking flavor. They must have new cooks and new recipes. In addition they seem to have raised their prices a little bit. Not planning to order again from here.

OKAY! WOW! Dil Se Indian Cuisine, absolutely delicious. Did take out, the dine in is still unavailable. I did the chicken Tikka Marcela (medium) and garlic Naan. I also had to give the Raitha a try. That sauce is yummy. All the flavors and textures are fabulous. Will absolutely drive 25 minutes to Portland for this place again!

Google
Wow. Yumm. I am of Nepalese descent and I thoroughly enjoyed the past two times I came here. The samosa Chan a chaat was fantastic. Not what I was expecting but it was a familiar, unexpected surprise. Chicken tikka masala was delightful. The chicken wasn’t dry which is awesome. The eggplant curry is pretty good but just know that it’s essentially a peanut curry.

Yelp
The food tasted authentic and delicious. This was my first time eating here, and we were not disappointed. Everything we tried was tasty. The lamb vindaloo was probably my favorite dish, but all were solid. The service was prompt. I called in a phone order, and from start to finish, it took 30 minutes for the order to be completed. When I arrived, the food was ready to go. I paid and left. The woman who gave me the food was very kind. The ambiance appeared average at this establishment. In my opinion, where the restaurant is located, this part of Portland is dirty and feels unsafe because of the unsavory people who inhabit it. The restaurant is takeout only, and I was completely fine with it because it's not an area where I would want to hang out. This spot is up there with any of the Indian food I have had in Portland, and I would personally say it's one of the best. I look forward to coming back and trying more offerings.

Yelp
I found this place on Uber eats and based on the reviews decided to check it out. The food is great!! We got paneer tikka masala, bhaturas, veggie chowmein, gobi manchurian and paneer tikka. Each dish was so well made and authentic! Each order of bhatura comes with around five small pieces so it's plenty of food. The paneer dishes were delicious!! The chowmein in particular was exceptional - very similar to what I remember eating in India! Check this place out for an authentic Indian food experience!

Yelp
Honest delivery driver review (4 years) review: The only saving grace for this place is the people are nice. They don't do service inside as their restaurant is in shambles (stacks of boxes, the cleanliness is something to be desired). Your food will never be on time, that's just the sad facts, they are always running behind. From the pricing to the quality of food? You'll be better off going to someplace cheaper for better quality. Right as you walk in the fish tank present is so clouded with green algae, it hasn't been cleaned in years. Sad to say you're better off saving your money.

Yelp
Best Indian food in Pdx. Our go to every week: Mysore Masala Dosa Paneer butter masala Garlic Naan
google avatar

Ankit P.

Yelp
The Paneer Tikka Masala is FIRE. Reminds me of how it is in India, very authentic and the paneer itself is big and has a smokey flavor to it which completes the gravy really well The Saag paneer is not bad but it didn't stand out like the Tikka Masala. Both dishes were ordered Medium and it matched the spice well. The Saag could've been spicier The Gobi Manchurian was also really good, with the perfect level of spice and flavor. The Paneer Pakoras was too breaded and had a very small amount of paneer in them, also was more bland compared to the other options so definitely worth skipping We did takeout and even the next day the paneer tikka masala leftover was as good as it was when we ordered it so I definitely recommend getting that and the Gobi Manchurian for sure

Good F.

Yelp
Take away only (didn't know!) so had to eat in the car. Pretty good for Portland/LA/SFO standards. Best we've found yet in the area. Naan and vindaloo good, very different than authentic in UK, but good.

Yelp
We loved Dil Se before they became carry-out only! We live too far for that to be practical!

Yelp
Good food, friendly service. I like eggplant korma and this was very good. Experiment and try new dishes here, ask for recommendations-the waiter was a great source of ideas

Yelp
Seriously the best Indian food in Portland. With an amazing vegan and vegetarian selection it's a must. I've been happily introducing them to anyone I know who likes Indian food. I used them to cater my wedding during the 2022 December ice storm and it was super affordable and they were so sweet. When my bakery closed and we couldn't get our cake I called in a panic thinking they would be closed too, but they assured me they'd be there to make it happen. I seriously cannot recommend them enough from their food to their amazing staff.

Yelp
Ordered Vindaloo Chicken extra spicy. It was amazing. Will for sure come back and try more of the menu.

Yelp
Solid spot! Really liked the flavor of their food. Everything I ordered tasted fresh and high-quality. Serving size was good, not too big not too small. The Samosa Chana Chaat had a bit of a kick to it. I like the sauce on top. Samosas were crunchy and generously filled. The Masala Dosa was also good. The batter outside was a bit tangy but it went really well with the creamy potato filling that was packed inside. I liked the accompanying nutty and spicy sauces too, paired well with the dish. Got to try their Rasmalai too. It's my first and I kinda into it. Not as sweet as many Indian desserts. The milk was flagrant and refreshing while the sponge was super tender and sopped up all the creamy goodness. Very quick to order and pick up. Maybe a bit too quick, funnily enough. I went early and the food was already there sitting for a bit. They got ultra fast chefs here so maybe go pick up on the early side to avoid your food getting cold!

Yelp
Time and time again, Dil Se has been my go-to restaurant for Indian cuisine. I usually order the Chicken Kuruma, Malai Kofta, and Butter Naan. The portion size is good since they pack everything into pint-sized containers and don't skimp on the food. If I had to choose, my absolute favorite would have to be the Chicken Kuruma, which comes with a coconut, cashew nut and almond sauce made with southern indian spice. For all you lactose intolerant brothers out there, this one doesn't have dairy. To top it off, the chicken they dunk in this soaks up the delicious flavor and has a delectable bite. It also comes with a side of white rice, which complements the curry. I highly recommend this Indian restaurant because it is comparable to the ones I used to frequent in California.

Yelp
We really enjoyed our meal here, the portions were good, and all of the flavors were exactly what I expected. I hadn't been here before, so based upon reviews I thought I would try take-out to start with. We ordered Malai Kofta (with 4 large kofta), Butter Paneer (came with giant chunks of paneer), and Aloo Gobi (good balance of cauliflower and potatoes). I opted for an additional side of rice (just in case there wasn't enough), as well as a side of raita. Everything was good, perhaps not as spicy as I would have liked (I had ordered medium). You know how sometimes you order Indian food, and every dish tastes almost the same? Maybe it's me, but sometimes that happens - but that DIDN'T happen here - everything had it's own unique flavor profile which I loved. I'm looking forward to trying dine-in, and making sure it lives up to my hype.

Kathleen F.

Yelp
It's just... so good. It's just perfect. The only downside is that I'm never going to try or explore Indian food elsewhere in Portland because I don't need to. Dil Se is right there, and it's fast, and reasonably priced and just... so, so good. I usually get the tandoori salmon (which I now believe is the best way to eat cooked salmon) and some naan, my partner gets their chicken kebab and loves it everytime. The tamarind sauce is really good and I would buy a bottle of it if I could. I like that it's takeout only because I get my takeout faster and I have to imagine it also helps keep prices down. 10/10 would recommend.

Marsi T.

Yelp
Our first time ordering from Dil Se. The food was delicious and ready for pick up at the time requested. It will become a regular takeout option for us.

Neel P.

Yelp
Food was average. Noodles were good. No dine in only take out. We order paneer dish and got barbecue. Food was spicy (normal spicy).

Yelp
We are in town and staying at The Nines. The concierge recommended Dil Se after we asked for a recommendation for Indian food. We walked over with our two little ones only to realize it is take out only. Ugh! I really wanted to avoid messy take out in our room with the kiddos, but we did it anyway because we didn't want to look for another restaurant. Food was great. Wish we could have dined in. Last time I was in Portland 6 years ago the city was cleaner and it was bustling. Now I feel uneasy walking around with my kids, the homeless population has skyrocketed and most restaurants are closed. Needless to say we likely won't be back after this trip.

Yelp
Dil Se Indian cuisine is so delicious. I am gluten-free and they take this seriously. Most of the entrees are naturally gluten-free, but some appetizers are not. When I called to order the person answering the phone let me know the fryer was shared so there was a chance for cross-contamination. I appreciate this so much because sometimes people don't think of this. I am not sure it would be celiac-safe, but chances of eating gluten seem low if you avoid naan and appetizers. I have never been glutenized by this place!! They are my go-to place. Thank you Dil Se!
google avatar

Shane W.

Yelp
First thing to say, I always appreciate when an "extra spicy" request is met, and my lamb vindaloo delivered. Most of the dishes we got were strong. My wife's paneer butter masala was fantastic, and the samosas were very tasty. The paneer pakora was a little dry, disappointing but understandable after delivery. Other than that, we were pretty happy.

Ryan K.

Yelp
I'm always looking for a great Indian restaurant. I've given this place a shot many times, with a few different entrees and appetizers, and have always been very happy. The food is bursting with flavor, well prepared, and always consistent. It's my go-to Indian spot.

Aldah M.

Yelp
food is authentic and everything we have gotten so far has been delicious. I am partial to the karuma. folks are very friendly. is only takeout and delivery.

Natasha P.

Yelp
Woaw! When me and my husband go on vacation we always try to have 1 meal for the entire trip at an indian restaurant. We came across this and the food was incredible! They made the food spicy, exactly how we wanted it. Defined hit the spot! Only downfall their dine in seating is closed but sometimes you have to make those business decisions.

Dawn L.

Yelp
found this on Uber Eats and I was so pleasantly surprised I had the chicken tiki masala and it was fabulous and I do have to say I'm a little picky very good. I can't wait to go to the store and have it in house.

Arreis S.

Yelp
Ordered the vegetable vindaloo and it was not good. Vindaloo is my favorite dish and there's was a 3/10 mainly tasted vinegar. Butter chicken was just ok and the spinach pakora is only good with a sauce which does not come with it automatically. To top it all off this food made me and my bf so sick so unless you want your stomach messed up for the next two days just go to swagat instead.

Yelp
We tried Dil Se due to the good reviews. We ordered 5 items with mixed results. Masala Dosa and chicken tikka kebab were both very good. The paneer tikka masala, eggplant curry and malai kofta were all a miss. The tikka masala had green bell peppers which gave it a bitter tang. Something I've never seen before. The malai kofta was not ground fine enough for the dumplings or the curry leaving a very coarse texture. The eggplant curry tasted only of pepper and the stems were left on the eggplant. Overall the meal was disappointing.

George T.

Yelp
Excellent salmon dish!!! Would definitely recommend it!! Would help to include utensils or ask if needed.

Yelp
I ordered delivery through a delivery service and loved the food. It all tasted very homemade and fresh, especially the malai koftas. I also really liked the Masala dosa. I really appreciated the notes on the menu about which foods were made without gluten containing ingredients. I have been looking for a place that makes great dosas in Portland and will definitely order again.

Yelp
One of our neighborhood favorites. Excellent food and thoughtful service. We really enjoy the bhindi masala, malai kofta, and saag paneer. I'm certain you'll find a dish you'll love. Cheers!

Andrea C.

Yelp
Food was amazing. Ordered togo. Still hot and fresh when delivered. Flavors perfect with lots of flavor. Spicy, but not overly spicy. Will definitely be ordering again.
google avatar

Yelp
My husband and I order from Dil Se regularly. We LOVE their food. Their flavors are all on point. We've tried nearly everything on their menu, all amazing, but our favorite dish combination is as follows: Gobi Manchurian (cauliflower appetizer with a kick!), Samosa Channa Chaat (chopped up samosas with flavorful chutney; we ask for extra tamarind sauce), Tandoori Salmon (sooo good!), and Sambar (spicy lentil soup with a steamed idli cake). [Note: Sometimes, we call and no one picks up. But usually, someone calls us back soon after. It's probably better to order through their online system.]
google avatar

Bharath Y.

Yelp
It was our first time at this restaurant and we ordered Chicken 65 to go. It not only smelt and looked burnt but we could even taste the same while eating it. When we mentioned this to the restaurant, they asked for proof and told us to send a picture. Even though we sent a picture their only response was - "this is how we cook the Chicken 65" Highly disappointed with not just the food but the service provided too.

J P.

Yelp
Ordered through Uber eats and the food was delivered on time and still fresh and hot. Generous amount of large paneer chunks in the tikka masala which was flavorful and made accordingly to requested spicy level. Naan was soft and fresh. Dosa got a little soggy which is expected with takeout but the taste was on point and sambar/chutneys on side were great sides.
google avatar

Yelp
I really cannot get enough of this place. Every once in a while when I start to crave Indian food, I don't have to give it a second thought on where to go. I automatically go here. First time I tried Dil Se, I ordered the Palak Paneer and Malai Kofta in medium spicy (both come with rice) and butter naan. Everything tasted like the definition of comfort food. The flavors touch your soul. The only thing was medium spicy wasn't spicy enough for me. I've ordered Dil Se at least 3 more times since then (with the addition of Chicken Kuruma) and I asked them to give me the spiciest level they have. Now that was perfect! Do not skip on their naan - they go perfectly with the spicy curries. I always tell myself that I'd try something new the next time I order from them, but I loveeee the items I tend to get - especially the chicken kuruma and malai kofta. One time, I placed an order for dinner via DoorDash 1 day early. The next day, I craved them so badly that I called them to ask if they can move up my order to lunch. No problem they said. Food was ready in 20 minutes - good thing because I couldn't stand to wait any longer. Already thinking about my next meal here!
google avatar

Humsini V.

Yelp
We got food from here delivered. It was very prompt and was correct. We got the saag paneer, malai kofta, Chennai chicken curry, and garlic naan. Everything was ordered as medium spicy. It was the perfect amount of spice. It was also a great quantity - it fed 4 people for 2 meals. I enjoyed all the dishes. The saag paneer had a good tang and was not super creamy. The malai kofta curry base was delicious, but for some reason the kofta itself did not hit the spot - I may just prefer a different type of filling/filling ratio.
google avatar

Festivefunkylife M.

Yelp
We ordered Paneer Tikka Masala, Malai Kofta and 4 naans- 2 butter and 2 garlic naans. Food was piping hot and delicious. Paneer Tikka Masala- was excellent in taste same like we get in India proper Tikka Masala taste and not that we normally get in US ( all paneer curries tasting same). Paneer was so good that I can go again from Seattle just to eat food. Malai Kofta was a bit watery but still good in taste and absolute delight to taste buds. Naans were super soft and thin so loved it!!
google avatar

Maya H.

Yelp
The best masala dosa I have eaten in many years. The dosa was perfectly balanced and sour. The potatoes were seasoned to perfection. The mango lassi was not overly sweet. I didn't taste any cardamom but that's fine with me. I also had the paneer tikka masala. Very very tasty. I would definitely recommend this place.
google avatar

Maria G.

Yelp
The menu items here resemble a typical North Indian style restaurant and most items are not too spicy compared to more traditional restaurants. The food here seems to be adapted to American tastes as the chutneys offered with the dosa tasted sweet; with a ketchup consistency and resemblance. The service here is quite lacking as my server was not very attentive and didn't bring any silverware until I asked for the third time, despite being not particularly busy. However, the ambience is decent and the interiors were clean and pleasant. At least the servers were spending time to wipe the placemats and tables properly. The quality of food here is average but the menu is more on the expensive time with a cost of $15 per menu item on average or more. Overall, this is a mediocre Indian restaurant located in downtown Portland that I may go again if I am in the vicinity and want something spicy.
google avatar

Cindy A.

Yelp
Dil Se is a good choice if you're in the mood for decent Indian food in a pleasant, casual atmosphere. Their menu offers all the standard Indian dishes along with dosas and a few indo-chinese items. We ordered samosa channa chaat, gobi manchurian, aloo gobi, indo-chinese noodles and garlic naan. Everything was tasty and although it wasn't the best Indian food I've ever had it certainly was enjoyable. They are open for lunch and dinner but note this is one of the few Indian restaurants that does not offer a lunch buffet. The atmosphere is comfortable but looks a bit worn and in need of refurbishing. Service was pleasant. We would definitely return.

Yelp
I had been craving Indian food for the past couple weeks and finally found time to come here! Very friendly staff and good quality authentic food! Drinks: we had house red wine because unfortunately any other wine could only be ordered by the bottle, but the house option was pretty good! App: tried the Aloo Bonda, basically a samosa but in a large round form (menu says dumpling sized but actually quite large and round like a super-meatball). These were warm and yummy and the two sauces that came with it were super tasty and had great flavor! Mains: Saag with lamb was honestly a little tasteless and I was disappointed in the consistency. It was still good, just not exactly what I would have ideally imagined it would be. Chicken tikka masala was perfect and I could have eaten just that and been super content! Both entrees also came with a side of rice. Garlic naan: PERFECT, I could eat it for days. Overall it quenched my Indian food craving while not being the absolute best or the fanciest environment. I would definitely go back and I do think the prices were fair for the amount of food I got and the leftovers I'll be enjoying for lunch tomorrow!

Yelp
We ordered takeout from Amazon, have never been inside. We thought the food was great . Good options for a diets. We were happy with everything we ordered. Portion size seems very small. Usually , takeout lasts us through the weekend, this was not enough for one meal , even when doubling naan and samosas.
google avatar

J S.

Yelp
Take out only. No indoor dining. They never pick up phone. We had to drive up and disappointed
google avatar

Luna H.

Yelp
We live in the neighborhood and get takeout here all the time. Everything on the menu is great, we love all the curries. Get extra, makes the best leftovers! Best Indian in the city, by far.
google avatar

Tannu S.

Yelp
I forgot to take picture of our food as I was too hungry when I came in. We waited in a lounge area before they were ready with our table. We ordered a few vegetarian dishes and our friend ordered chicken65. He explained the chicken as moist and juicy with perfect flavors. The dal and malai kofta were decently good as well. I felt the naan could do better as they were thick for my liking. Overall they served a good meal with a fine service. If you are looking for better Indian flavors with a decent service in Portland area, this could be the place.
google avatar

Lily C.

Yelp
My friends and I wanted some Indian food during our trip in Portland, and we decided on Dil Se. Overall, our food from our takeout order was pretty good, although not the best Indian food we've had. However, everything did hit the spot (we were really hungry, bordering hangry lol), and the man working in the restaurant was really kind (not sure if he was the chef/owner etc.)! We did have to wait quite a while (~40 minutes) for our food to be ready even though the initial wait time we were given was ~13 minutes, but the man gave us a discount due to the wait, which we weren't expecting but definitely appreciated. I got the saag paneer and garlic naan and would recommend both!

Najat S.

Yelp
Ordering online for pickup was a breeze, our dishes were delicious, and the portions were generous. Once upon a time, I preferred to drive out to Beaverton or Hillsboro because the options in Portland were targeted to the Gora (white) palate. That changed when Dil Se opened in 2017. Last night, we ordered Choe Bhatura, Masala Dosa, Malai Kofta, and Garlic Naan (all vegetarian). Everything was full-flavoured, the sauces had the perfect consistency and the breads had just the right mouthfeel. PRO TIPS FOR ONLINE ORDERS: 1) Request your preferred spice levels in the special instructions text field during checkout. 2) The default turnaround time for online orders is 40 minutes, but the owner assured me they can get it faster if I call after placing my order.

Yelp
We discovered our new favorite Indian restaurant with regional dishes so delicious. There are many vegan and gluten free dishes along with meaty dishes. Everything we tried was so good. And looked so presentable delicious so much I forgot to take pics. Was I ever busy tasting --- we went all vegetarian even though we are meat lovers. Medhu Vada - doughnut shaped fritter made with ground lentil batter. Served with sambar, a flavorful lentil and vegetable dipping sauce. Uttapam - slightly thicker, fermented pancake-style variation of the Dosa (rice and lentil crepe), variety of savory toppings. Each Uttapam is also served with fresh coconut and tomato chutneys and sambar. Indo Chinese - Hakka noodles stir fried in a wok with vegetables and homemade Indo Chinese sauce. Naan for dipping in the variety of sauces Indian cuisine knocks it out of the ball park! Nice decor, light and airy with full windows on street corner of 12th and Jefferson downtown. Must go back soon for a curry dish.

Yelp
I have lived in Portland for eleven years and finally found amazing Indian food here! Tried this place on a whim and feel like I found treasure. I am seriously impressed. Every single dish, chutney, and appetizer we tried was awesome. I can't remember everything we tried, but the Aloo Gobi was divine, and the fried rice was addicting. As someone who loves spicy food, the amount of spice and heat was perfect. I got the garlic naan and came in a healthy portion and it was cooked to perfection (just how I like my carbs).

Yelp
Ambiance: nice but casual Price: over-priced for what you get Parking: street parking can be a bit tough here Service: fine, not speedy Food: mixed. -Aloo Bondi was a bit spicy and good. -Saag paneer - sauce was thin -Malai Kofta -good consistency but lacked deep flavor Ras Malai - good texture but served in a watery rosewater half and half instead if heavy cream
