Taiwanese Tea Shop Expanding to Fashion Valley - Eater San Diego

"Founded in Taiwan, Ding Tea exploded onto the bubble tea scene and over the last few years has steadily expanded across Asia, Europe, and North America to more than 1,000 locations; its presence locally includes outposts in Mira Mesa, La Jolla, National City, and SDSU. But an branch headed for the Fashion Valley Mall will be the most expansive in San Diego and is the first food and beverage outlet that’ll be on the second floor of the mall and not a part of the food court area. Instead, Ding Tea will have a 1,788-square-foot space next to H&M with a brand new patio for outdoor seating. This store will be independent, and not affiliated with others in the chain, but it’ll carry the full line of boba drinks, from shaken milk and fruit teas to yogurt drinks and drip coffee. Setting it apart from other locations, it will also offer a dedicated dessert menu of crepes, bubble waffles, and other sweets. Ding Tea’s Nick Truong tells Eater that the Fashion Valley cafe should be opening between Summer and Fall 2021. Alexis Dachs of Location Matters represented the tenant in the lease." - Candice Woo

Hi, I wanted to share a quick experience I had during my last visit. Right after I paid for my drink, I was told the boba wouldn’t be ready for another 20 minutes...something that would’ve been helpful to know before ordering. I waited, but by the time I got my drink, the ice had melted and it ended up really watered down. I appreciate your team, but I’d love it if delays like that were mentioned up front so customers can make an informed choice. Thanks!

I rarely leave reviews, but my visit to Ding Tea definitely deserves one. From the moment I walked in, the staff was welcoming, patient, and genuinely friendly. The store was clean, cozy, and had a great vibe—perfect for a quick hangout or a chill study spot.

Been to this location a few years ago. Trying it again this time around. I ordered the passion fruit green tea. I was expecting more with a $6 drink. Drink was a bit water down and the boba was half cooked. Staff was a bit slow on the drinks. My favorite boba spot is the Ding Tea in Seattle, but this location just doesn't cut it. Parking is easy in the plaza. Not sure I'll be back in the future.

Google
The service is great and the servers are nice, BUT one huge issue is the music is *TOO* loud. I can never hear the barista talk, nor can they hear me order my beverage. It literally sounds like I'm at a rock concert everytime I come, and I hate coming for this reason, so I'll visit other boba shops nearby instead

Great boba in the Mira Mesa Village Mall. Quick service and a clean area to sit and relax make it a good spot to enjoy your drink.

Google
I ordered the magnonada drink so good. Sweet sour spicy. Daughter got the strawberry creme. Gf ended up not getting anything because of the attitude of the cashier. Attitude about not having change for cash we were gonna pay with and then attitude about if we are able to make a certain drink with Boba. No! We have strawberry creme. ( doesn't seem much but the facial expressions.) Thanks to the guy making the drinks. Could totaly see the attitude as the cashier walked back to make the strawberry creme. She thought I wasn't paying attention but her frustration of whatever she's going through. Take a day off or get a different job.

Google
Fraud!!!! Fake their drinks now with diluted old ingredients, some taste like old SPOLIED MILK !!! AND THEY raised their price to be one of the most expensive Ding tea. Try other DING TEA Will report this location to the Ding Tea franchise

Yelp
I stopped by Ding Tea in Mira Mesa hoping to try their Lotus Oolong Tea, but unfortunately, they were out of Lotus. Instead, I ordered the Soursop Green Tea but substituted green tea with oolong. It turned out to be a refreshing and unique drink--I really enjoyed it! My boyfriend went for the Thai Tea with boba, and he liked it a lot too. The staff was friendly and efficient, and our drinks came out quickly. The shop itself is cozy and clean, though there was a homeless person sitting outside at one of the tables, which didn't bother us but might be something to note for others. Overall, the drinks were great, and I'll definitely be back to try the Lotus Oolong when it's available.

Yelp
First time at this location, we stopped by after shopping in this shopping center. Upon entering there were a few customers ahead of us. Once we ordered, everyone got their orders and exited. We hung around for a bit to get a breather from shopping. Plenty of chairs and tables in the shop. They have restroom for use. I was going to use the bathroom but the area was filled with boxes of their supplies and the restroom was dirty with no tissue paper so I left but told the staff they ran out of tissue paper. Customer service was just okay here. They seem busy and distracted. We ordered two taro milk tea drinks; 75% and 100% sweetened and a lychee aloe drink. They were decent.

Yelp
This suite in the Mira Mesa Mall was the first San Diego area location of Ding Tea before it branched out to other neighborhoods around the county. The parking here was plentiful because of the large shared lots. The inside had plenty of seating and seemed to be a popular hangout. When I first visited Ding Tea several years ago, the products were very satisfying. Now with the ongoing proliferation of boba tea shops, I've decided to recalibrate my assessment. My order was a large peach green tea with brown sugar boba added with less ice and regular sweetness. I don't know if the brown sugar or crystal pearls made much difference other than being different colors. The chewiness was decent but not the best I have sampled. As for the tea flavor and sweetness, they didn't really stand out like before. The prices have certainly increased yet they remained competitive so that was a positive. For all of my past experiences with Ding Tea, I gave the Mira Mesa shop a three star rating.
google avatar

Somi J.

Yelp
There weren't much of caffeine free options so I had their brown sugar milk tea. Which had the perfect amount of sweetness but their boba... boba, boba, boba. Wrong texture all the way. Disappointing. It wasn't cooked all the way so the middle of boba was a hard texture. The guy who helped me with my order was kind enough for me to try a white jelly, which wasn't my favorite either. There were few seatings around. It was pretty cozy. But it didn't scream, oh, I would come back here to tele work. Overall, I would come back and try it again if I'm around.

Yelp
Did not know that there was a Ding Tea within this shopping area and I'm always at Marshall's! It was very hot outside today (nearly 80F) and so a nice iced drink was perfect to stay cool. I came with my cousin. She ordered the mango yakult with grass jelly, half sweet. She usually orders 0% sweet, but for this specific drink you can only get it half sweet. She said the flavor was really good but she wished they used a different shape ice and less amount. It made it difficult to get to the grass jelly. I ordered the signature milk tea with black boba, 75% sweet. The boba didn't feel super freshly made (not warm), and it was borderline chewy. If it stayed with the ice it would have been hard. The signature milk tea was a little lacking. Nothing worth to be called "signature," I'm not sure why it's popular since it was pretty average. Next time I'd try the Hokkaido Oolong Milk Tea. I wanted the honey boba which is what Ding Tea specializes in, but sadly, they didn't have it today (ran out already??) The workers were nice. The tables were nice, clean, and sanitized. Big space with cute decor. If I'm in the area, I'll come here for boba! Recommend to try it out for something refreshing.
google avatar

Yelp
I've been to this location a number of times and the boba does not disappoint. Flavors are not super customizable, but there are a ton of great options to choose from. Games inside can be played, and the decorations are lively and attractive!
google avatar

Yelp
One of the few places in Mira Mesa opened till 11pm. Good amount of tables to choose from, and I like coming here to chat or play board games :) highly recommend the aloe vera kiwi juice, just a very refreshing drink and feels healthy too. Employees are chill and they serve the drinks fast!
google avatar

Yelp
Stopped in at 9pm on a Friday night and they ran out black tea and green tea. We were not offered an alternative so we didn't get anything but it seems early to run out of base of many teas and not make more considering they are supposed to be open for another 2 hours, according to posted hours.
google avatar

Jackie T.

Yelp
Great customer service. Drinks came out super quick. Nice place to hang out and catch up with friends. The decor was very modern. Will definitely be back.

Yelp
Edit: Here's a picture of the wire in my Thai Tea drink that I posted about 4 months ago (happened on June 26, 2022, but I never wrote a review then.
google avatar

Yelp
It was my first time here and there was plenty of seating inside. The staff was helpful and super quick too. I ordered a brown sugar latte with oat milk and it was good. It tasted a little too milky for my taste but not bad. They have lots of drinks options so I'll have to come back another time to try something else

Yelp
The food of boba is great Service is 5/5 And ambiance is good and clean after all. Love the boba a lot.

Yelp
I always come here because they have a larger variety of drinks! I just ordered my go to yesterday it was SOO GOOD! I've tried some drinks from here but none really stood out. I got their Hokkaido black milk tea, and it was SOO GOOD! It was like really refreshing but creamy and good. It was 50% sweet, which I usually do 25% because I hate sweet drinks but 50% was perfect ! service is always fast and super friendly. The ambiance is cool, sometimes I see friends just hanging out or people studying. But I love this place

Lannie L.

Yelp
The person getting my order was nice. I got my order and just left. When I got home, I was appalled that this is Ding Tea's 75% ice. I only drank quarter of my drink but I seems like there's not much left anymore? Its full of ice. This is a scam! All of the 3 drinks I got were like this. So disappointed!

Teep V.

Yelp
Service is great but I always feel that they're always out of stuff. Boba is inconsistent and it feels like the drinks change every now and then, I've asked the workers and they said that the syrups change time to time. Chill ambiance, although there's always this homeless guy around he's chill tho.

Yelp
While we first fell in love with Ding Tea and its vast menu, customizable drinks (sugar/ice/bobas etc), we had moved into frequenting their La Jolla location until it recently closed. Our most recent visit was August 2022, and while this location doesn't offer some unique flavors that the LJ location did, the drinks were still just as yummy and service was prompt.
google avatar

Yelp
You know something's off if a boba shop is almost completely empty on a weekend afternoon-- when I got there, there were only 2 parties. The drinks were ready way too quickly (in less than 2 minutes), which perhaps contributes to why they did not come out well. Peach green tea: - This drink was refreshing and the tea was strong, but had a bitter aftertaste. The bitterness was tolerable though. - My one star off is because there is no peach flavor. Jasmine green milk tea [do NOT recommend at all]: - My 2 more stars off is because of how terribly they butchered the jasmine green milk tea, which is a classic drink at boba shops. This drink barely had any tea flavor and was overpoweringly milky. This is surprising and highly disappointing, as Ding Tea is an establishment that has been in the Mira Mesa area for awhile. Try Happy Lemon instead if you're looking for a pleasantly fragrant and creamy jasmine milk tea.
google avatar

Faline N.

Yelp
Never pleased with their customer service but came back for their Lotus tea. To be honest, don't ask for tip with that kind of service. Drinks are affordable.
google avatar

Krajicek K.

Yelp
My must stop place to get the oolong milk tea with extra shots of tea, no sugar, little ice; after finishing a meal at Little Sakana. I think this is the sweet balance of the raw fishes with salty soy sauce...hahaha It was always a satisfying drink!
google avatar

Jennifer O.

Yelp
Pros -The tea and the coffee both had a nice flavor -the drink had a generous amount of boba Cons -service was poor. The employee didn't greet us when we came up to the counter and he just seemed annoyed. When we asked for modifications to our drinks, he didn't give us level options, he just randomly chose for us. -the boba was undercooked. Some were hard in the middle. For a boba tea place, boba should be the one thing they get right. -the sink in the bathroom was so filthy... more like a sink that coal miners had used than one used in a food establishment. And they were completely out of hand soap. What were the employees using??

Yelp
We've been to other Ding Tea locations and this was absolutely disgusting. I always order the strawberry slush and my daughter always orders black tea latte with boba. My slushy tasted nasty and was more like a smoothie consistency. I asked if they put milk or some sort of dairy and they said they put creamer (two of the three workers were very unfriendly and didn't care that we truly did not enjoy our drinks).....isn't Ding Tea a franchise and shouldn't they make it the same way in all stores? My daughter's drink came with no ice, very warm, and with cold boba that was not chewable. We honestly threw our drinks away after one sip. The workers didn't offer to make a different drink seeing how disgusted our faces looked (or I would not have left a 1 star review). Would love to hear from the manager or owner and understand why the drinks taste soooo much different than other Ding Tea locations.

Yelp
WHY WE WENT HERE: - post-dinner boba THE LOOK (FROM THE OUTSIDE): - located in a plaza off Mira Mesa Blvd and Reagan Rd - you have to park by Marshalls and walk a bit into a shopping alley to get to DingTea THE LOOK (FROM THE INSIDE): THE MENU: - milk tea - flavored tea - fresh tea - latte - coffee - new drink WHAT WE ORDERED: - brown sugar milk tea with boba - wintermelon milk tea with boba THE TASTE: - good CUSTOMER SERVICE: - quick
google avatar

Julia T.

Yelp
Got wintermelon green milk tea with golden boba 75% sugar. Yummy! Would've been too sweet if I got full sweetness. The boba was perfect texture and had a slight sweet flavor. 5/5 Service was good, cashier was so nice The bathroom was dirty despite me coming shortly after they opened. Needed a good wipe down.
google avatar

Vidya P.

Yelp
Reasonable. Menu has a ton of variety, and the flavor was reasonable. Long wait at the time I visited. Customer service was okay (frazzled probably because it was so busy). Boba wasn't as soft as I've had it before. Lots of other boba places out there. Would only recommend if you don't have easy access to those.
google avatar

Samantha C.

Yelp
Huge parking lot so you shouldn't have an issue finding a spot up close. Depending on the time it can get busy and late at night we have seen a line almost out the door. However, the staff is quick and friendly so even with a line it moves fast. Prices are pretty average. If it's busy, definitely check your order as one time they messed up and missed adding the toppings to our waffle but we had already driven home and didn't bother driving back. You also have the option of putting in your order online to save yourself time. The Yakult drinks are very good and they even have a little freezer with little ice creams. They are pretty expensive but come in exotic flavors.
google avatar

Paul K.

Yelp
Ding tea is always a solid option for boba, not the best in the world but it definitely gets the job done. The tea quality itself is pretty good, better than most. However the pearls just weren't that great when I tried this location, they lacked sweetness and had a little too much chew. Would recommend the jasmine milk tea which is flavorful, just needs work on the pearls Overall Tea 4/5 Pearls 2/5 Overall 3/5
google avatar

Julie C.

Yelp
This place was recommended by a friend so I gave it a try. It's in a cute place with surrounding restaurants. It was just about closing so it was empty inside. It looked nice and clean. I was greeted and noticed the abundant choices for drinks and saw a sign that they had bubble waffle! I was excited to see that and had asked if they had matcha bubble waffle but was told kindly that they did not. I understand since it was about closing but maybe got to try it next time! I ended up getting honey green tea and Thai iced tea (both mediums) to go. (I forgot to take a picture of the Thai iced tea). Both were pretty good, but I personally like similar drinks elsewhere. The staff were kind, place was neat, and drinks were not so bad. Would definitely come back again! I would also recommend!
google avatar

Mina L.

Yelp
I went to Ding Tea today to order a delicious boba drink. Instead, I received my strawberry milk tea boba in a white paper cup. Honestly, the drink is disgusting and all I taste is paper . I have ordered a strawberry milk tea before and never have I ever received my drink in a paper cup. The employee had the audacity to lie and say it is the POLICY. I won't be returning to MIRA MESA DING TEA location.
google avatar

Heather F.

Yelp
First time at this location and it was pretty good. I ordered online and picked up in store. They took a bit longer than the time said, but no worries. I order the brown sugar milk tea/boba every time I go to a Ding Tea and it's different every time. I have a favorite location I get it at because they make it to my liking. Here wasn't as good as my usual place I go to.
google avatar

Beatrix B.

Yelp
We order from Ding Tea all the time! And this star unfortunately is more so for the sanitation today. Found a hair that was inside my cousin's drink. It was sealed in! Half inside and half outside. During these times, gotta be more careful! But the boba was good though. I'd still go to Ding Tea.
google avatar

Momoca K.

Yelp
ever since my last review, ding tea has improved in terms of their drinks quality. I decided to bump up the review since the last 3 times I came back here, the drinks have been consistent! I ordered the jasmine green milk tea with boba, less ice and less sweet. Although this time around some boba was really hard, I'd say overall it's so much better. Not to mention the prices cheaper compared to its competitors in Mira Mesa. I will come back again!
google avatar

Zach R.

Yelp
Go to place for boba in San Marcos. Tried other boba shops over the years and never liked them as much. Personally, the jasmine milk tea here is my favorite and I really enjoy it. Not too sweet and a strong taste of jasmine. I found their jasmine milk tea to be the most consistently good tasting drink. Before, I used to get their signature milk teas a lot, but it was hit or miss half the time. Tried other drinks, but did not really enjoy the flavors due to how they tasted, or didn't taste I should say. I found it's kind of gamble ordering from here. I've received many drinks that tasted like cream on ice. Those were sad days, but understandable. Sadder days when waiting longer than anticipated for orders. Customer service is good! Everyone I've encountered was polite and kind. But I do feel it takes a little while to receive your drinks. I usually order online and schedule pickup times. But upon arrival on chosen times drinks were not ready for pickup. Resulting in waiting for the drinks, which shouldn't be the case imo. I don't expect a high sense of urgency, or anything, but man...I do feel they prepare drinks a little slow.
google avatar

Calina N.

Yelp
I usually come here if I'm craving boba and am in the area. The prices are good, usually no wait, and have plenty of options. However, it is not my favorite. I don't like their wintermelon milk tea. Sometimes their boba will be warm? Which I don't like especially when I'm drinking something cold. I will just stick to their fruit teas.
google avatar

Machaela C.

Yelp
This is my go to boba shop but today made me question them. For the last few years I've gone to the balboa location and have never had a problem. Today i went to the miramesa location for the first time since I relocated and I had metal in my drink. I'm very surprised at this so I called the store but noone picked up so that's why I'm leaving this review. I'm a loyal customer and I feel a bit gipped. P.s. I sucked up the metal through the straw - terrifying
google avatar

Joshua Z.

Yelp
I've given Ding Tea many tries already, and it's sad to say that this is probably the last time I will be here. The previous times I've given this place 2-3 stars, but this time it's a 1 star. I got the winter melon green tea and the tea was extremely bitter even with half sugar. This bitterness tasted more like something unnatural. My friends also tried the drink and acknowledged the same. Unfortunately this is the last time I will be here.
google avatar

Rita S.

Yelp
This place is right next to my hair salon and I decided to give it a try.. The prices are very reasonable here, I got a large lychee tea with Boba and the Boba was so fresh and delicious and the tea was very refreshing and not too sweet. Anytime in the area this is my new tea spot.

Lacey D.

Yelp
Took over an hour for 9 drinks.. would not recommend, they should hire more staffing or limit the orders they can take.
google avatar

Roselyn F.

Yelp
We love Ding Tea so much that everywhere we go we would always look for the closest Ding Tea whenever we crave for boba. Drink on this location was good but the restroom is what grossed us out. The sink was disgusting that we didn't even want to wash our hands because of the splash of water from the sink.
google avatar

Denise M.

Yelp
Ditched SquareBar for this place! Here's a few things that I love about this place: 1) The boba and how much is in the actual cup! (Some places are hella stingy.) Their golden boba is smaller than the regular Boba, but it's tastier! 2) The plastic seal. (Super convenient when on the go.) I've gone to other places that use a straw lid. -_- 3) The staff are always really nice. Ambiance is great. Last night I got Thai Tea with boba and a Mango Milk Tea with boba. They were both very delicious! Their menu is quite fascinating. I'll be back for more! =)

Yelp
Ding Tea is my most recent go-to for boba since I moved into this new area. I've been here a few times now and have been meaning to write a review, so here we are! Today, my boyfriend ordered their Brown Sugar Latte per my recommendation and I had Wintermelon Tea. These two drinks are my new favorites for now. I love how creamy the Brown Sugar Latte is, and I also love Wintermelon's flavor: it's sweet but not overly sweet. Customer service has been satisfactory during all the times I've been here, so no complaints there! It's located in a busy complex but I haven't had any issues (yet) with parking. Due to COVID-19, there is a cap to how many people can be in there at once, but, again, no issues! So far, Ding Tea is a solid boba shop that I've grown to like during the course of my last few visits. No bad experiences as of now and I hope it stays that way!

Yelp
Date of most recent visit: August 27, 2020 With the recent heat wave, I was feeling parched after getting my steps in, but didn't feel like going to Starbucks or 85C. Since I hadn't been to Ding Tea in a long while, I thought it was time to pay them a visit. I bought myself a large iced Jasmine Green Tea with additional Star Jelly ($4.65 prior to sales tax & tip) - the tea hit the spot, and I could taste how strong the tea was. The Star Jelly was a bit of a surprise; I was expecting something like a star fruit-flavored jelly cube. instead, my drink had small star-shaped jellies that were pretty sweet and added to the flavor of my iced tea. For a while, Ding Tea was serving fried chicken and tofu bites, which I never got to try pre-pandemic... they're currently off the menu, but once this pandemic ends, I hope to see them back on there. Lots of iced drinks to try; give Ding Tea a shot next time it's a hot day!
google avatar

Dojo A.

Yelp
My first time here and I'm a big fan of Ding Tea and I think they have the best passion fruit green tea with grass jelly than any boba spots. But for whatever reason this place was a huge disappointment. Just by the look of the drink, it was different from other ding tea stores. This one was not good. The tea tasted a little bitter and the passion fruit flavor felt flat. I guess every franchise stores can make it differently. I hope they maintain the quality of boba drinks that Ding tea is known for.

Frederick R.

Yelp
Boba and drinks are great. Service here sucks though. The dudes with middle parts act like they're too cool for school and mad at you. "ANYTHING ELSE?!? "
google avatar

エ E.

Yelp
Meh. The ambiance sucks, there's boxes everywhere, the bathroom is horrendous and it kinda stinks. I got the strawberry yakult and I asked the girl if it was caffeine free ... and then I see her put white tea in it. Pass, I threw mine away after a few sips.
google avatar

Lisa W.

Yelp
Boba!! After a glutinous lunch at AYCE Little Sakana, I needed sometime sweet to wash my mouth, like a dessert. I got their milk tea with boba and sea salt cream. Their milk tea is very good. I like their boba too. Super good. I didn't even ask for less sugar and it came out right. I do wish they have some cream cheese foam... that would be awesome.
google avatar

Anna L.

Yelp
I usually get the monster boba latte but switched it up and got the brown sugar milk tea. Boba texture was good - chewy/not soft. Cute halloween decor. Looks like they're hiring!
google avatar

Ly M.

Yelp
Worst milk tea I ever had for awhile. I ordered lychee milk tea and they gave me lychee milk with no tea in it. Ridiculous
google avatar

Saliha M.

Yelp
Cute store, nowhere to sit because covid I guess, but it was great tea! I always get jasmine milk tea hot or with boba :) they made it great. Very fragrant and the staff are friendly and fast!
