Soooo I'm a tourist and Dinics has been on my must visit list for at least ten years! Finally I was going to have the famous roast pork sandwich with aged provolone and broccoli rhabe.
There was no line at Reading Terminal Saturday morning (5/21/22) which I found surprising. Walked right up, ordered a sandwich, paid, and it was in my hand in less than 2 minutes (which somewhat concerned me). Kinda just felt like they threw it all together.
The roll was fresh and sturdy but you know, not a lot of flavor to it to be honest. The roast pork was tender and moist but was barely warm and tepid, and frankly a little bland. The aged provolone was definitely present in my sandwich, loved it! But yes yes the real star of the show was the broccoli rhabe. It was cooked perfectly. It was green, had some crunch, good amount of bitterness, and nice and garlicky. All in all a very good sandwich and but not spectacular. I wish my sandwich was hotter (temperature). And I wish the pork was seasoned more.
Dinics is a rite of passage for many and was for me. But with so many places opening up in Philly, I think it's ok to break from traditions if it only enhances the food and eating experience.
