"A UNESCO World Heritage site, this 1,700-year-old palace sits on the Adriatic seafront, serving as the focal point of Split. It was built by the Roman emperor Diocletian as a seaside retirement home and has served as a refuge for many a conqueror over the centuries. Today, some 2,000 locals reside within the compound’s thick walls, making it a lively urban quarter. Getting lost in the labyrinth of surrounding streets is the best way to explore downtown Split—as you meander around, you’ll stumble across lively cafés and shops tucked into millennia-old buildings. Be sure to check out the Peristil, an imperial square framed by two colonnades, where Diocletian used to address the public. Towering above the square is Split’s major landmark—a 187-foot-tall belfry that you can climb for panoramic views of town."

Fantastic history. Careful of the slippery tiles, smoothed from centuries of use. The architecture is amazing and we spent a good day wandering around.
Early morning is better 'before' the crowds
Buy the 50euro 3 day pass in advance

You can't avoid seeing it in Split as it's the town center. It is fascinating that you stand amongst and within a building 1,700 years old, and people still live in it and use it.
It was very hot so we didn't climb the tower and chose not to buy tickets to anything.

Stunning place where you can spend a full day, whether it is visiting the paid exhibits, studying the ancient roman architecture or meandering through the streets where there are many shops, bars and restaurants.
Great view of the city from the top of the bell tower! Only 5 euro for admission.

Beautiful architecture, glorious ruins of a stately past. The Structures resemble Roman and Greek style in my opinion. Am so glad to have this wonderful opportunity to see it first hand. Simply awesome!

An amazing edifice! Yes, it’s touristy but, getting beyond that, the architecture, the warren of small streets and foot paths is intriguing. Take a guided walking tour, get a room for the night within the walls it’s very romantic after the crowds leave for the evening.

Cool to see but a bit of a mess. Some of the greatness is still around but so many souvenir stores, gelato bars, etc. In some ways it's a kinda interesting mix, but in the end it's just slightly less than what I was hoping for. Overall Split is very much a living city, with a long history, it has no concern moving on

Probably the highlight of Split!! This was such an evocative experience. Beautiful and a real glimpse into the past. Gets busy but was really pleasant over the past 2 days we visited.

Definitely worth visiting. Some of the oldest still used buildings in the world. I recommend buying a ticket for the tower - great views of the city and a great way to see how old architecture is mixed with more modern buildings across the old town.
