Detroit’s Best New Restaurants, May 2025 | Eater Detroit

"Dirty Shake is inside an empty ivy-covered and red-brick building on the corner of Forest at Second Avenue with a sprawling wraparound patio and opened on Thursday, March 13 — Detroit’s own 313 Day — from the team behind the award-winning Chartreuse Kitchen & Cocktails and Freya. Dirty Shake promises a neighborhood bar feel with a retractable garage door window that opens up to a spacious patio area that, during the warmer months, will surely be prime real estate for leisurely hangs. There’s indoor seating for 80. The interior features a long bar, two-top table seating, and a lounge area with upholstered seating surrounding a fireplace. Kamalani Overall, from the Oakland Art Novelty Company, serves as the spot’s beverage program manager, designing a menu of nostalgic drinks, boozy slushies, and fun takes on classic Detroit cocktails like the Hummer milkshake. Non-alcoholic options will also be available. Hewitt’s food menu will include affordable options like an impressive bar burger featuring two patties from a housemade blend of ground beef, sharp cheddar, and Martin’s potato rolls; and an incredibly flavorful serving of chicken wings, which are brined for 24 hours, then dry-cured for another 24 hours, then smoked for two hours, and fried to finish." - Serena Maria Daniels

Google
Great spot for burgers and drinks. You order at the bar. We got two burgers, fries, beer, and the a shake, can't remember the name of it but it started with an H. Bartenders were super nice. The patio is spacious with lots of comfortable seating. The burgers are fantastic, the toasted potato bun brings it all together. The fries are thick but really fried so they have a nice crunch and the milkshake was fantastic. Great spot, will be back.

First time here. Loved it. Great staff and the food was super tasty. The Strong Island drink lived up to its name and the Hummer was a perfect dessert. If you’re downtown for a game or show, highly recommend.

Great lil spot ! I was very impressed with the speed and service. Order taken drinks served , found a seat and waiting 10 mins or so for food to arrive was hot and delicious. Feta burger was amazing! The French fries are hand cut and amazing! Wings cooked to perfection 👌! And one of the best tasting cauliflower dishes I ever had so flavorful. Can't wait to go again and try some else! Also had a cocktail a whiskey sour 10 outta 10 !!!!! #detroitfoodie

these wings? Whewww, absolute showstoppers. Perfectly seasoned, crispy, and bold enough to stand alone; sauce or no sauce. You do get three on the side, but honestly? You won’t even need them. 🔥 Now the burger… tasted like a deluxe White Castle. Not terrible, but not memorable either. 👀 Customer service didn’t shake the room, but I’d still come back for those wings alone 💯

Google
What a fun new joint. The patio this summer is going to be the place to be! It has a cozy neighborhood vibe, the food was really good that we tried, and the "strong island" was the best Long Island I've ever had. I can't wait to try more of their cocktails and the boozy shakes. We had the wings, Greek salad, burger and fries. Everything was fresh and delicious, and the wings are outstanding. Whole (smoked I think?) wings, super crispy on the outside with no breading and juicy and tender on the inside. Nice and hot. Their homemade sauces are also really good - they bring 3 to the table with your order. The Greek salad was actually really yummy - I'm glad they have an option like this even though their menu is small and it's mostly snacks and bar food. It's not full service, at least right now - you order at the bar and they give you a table number and run your food out. Everything came out quickly. I have a feeling we'll be here often. Very chill. 7/8/25: I'm so happy they're open until midnight during the week - it's so hard to get decent food after 10. The kitchen closes at 11:15, so we made it just in the nick of time yesterday, and everything was awesome - wings, chicharrones, regular burger and feta (vegetarian) burger with fries. And we couldn't skip the strong island. Friendly service, even though we were the last ones there, and fresh delicious food. They do really close at midnight, though - lights on, chairs stacked. Maybe we can get out of the house before 11 next time! I really want to chill on their patio for awhile soon.

I went on a sunday afternoon and everyone was very friendly and the atmosphere was welcoming. We seated ourselves and ordered at the bar. Food was brought out hot and fresh in a timely manner. I really enjoyed the food here! We had the burger, wings, fries, and the jerk chicken wrap. The wings were amazing, loved the fries and the burger was very good too! If you know anything about jerk chicken skip the wrap, it wasn’t bad just lacking in depth of flavor. The pineapple dole whip was amazinggggg like i can see myself drinking them all summer. Overall it was a great vibe and the food is actually very good. I live in the area so I’ll be back!

Google
This was my first time there since it has opened. I waited until a cooler day during this unbearable summer heat to visit and it was a good visit. Pros: The jerk chicken pita with pineapple without the coleslaw, french fries with herbs, and hot Amish whole wings with some spicy pickles slices on the side were all good. Good atmosphere plenty of seating inside and outside. I sat outside until the mother nature of bees wanted my food so I went inside and watched Rocky. They have extra plush couches. Cons: The dole pineapple whip was more so a smoothie and not whipped at all. I added the passionfruit pearls for an extra $2, but nothing special. The drink was actually too sweet. $14 for three whole wings is a bit pricey and the fries portion is not big for the cost of them either. I will say to have signs up on the doors where to enter as I did not know there were 2 entrances. I would also say to have signs up that you have to order and pay for your food first before sitting inside or outside unless you're at the bar of course. Not sure if they don't have enough staff or not but I did wait for a minute to order my food and get to go boxes as the bartender was busy.

Google
These wings were phenomenal, some of the best I’ve ever had; great flavor, perfectly cooked, and worth the price. We also had the burger and fries and those didn’t disappoint either. Fantastic customer service, noticed an issue with our bill after I’d left the city- contacted them and they made it right within minutes with a refund back to my card. Great addition to the neighborhood.

Yelp
Dirty Shake is perfect for a delicious burger & some cold cocktails! Located in Midtown & open late, Dirty Shake hits the spot. The bartender was super friendly & helpful, offering suggestions & cracking jokes. I love this. There is a fun menu, Adult Happy Meals & boozy shakes are also an option! We ordered up some fried cauliflower wings & some sausage for an appetizer- both absolutely amazing. The burger and fresh cut fries definitely left a spot in my heart for more. There is an amazing patio to sit outside and enjoy the yumminess served up! Go give Dirty Shake a try, it will be your new favorite date night spot, friends night out, or for large groups!

Yelp
This is the perfect spot to lounge outside on the patio after work. Order an ice cold beer and some whole wings! You can't go wrong. They are big , crispy, seasoned and delicious! Service was very quick and friendly. I will return.

Yelp
What a fabulous bar! We chose it because we wanted a beer and a patio. Sadly the rain kept us inside, but our.window seats overlooking the patio were comfortable. Service was quick - order at the bar and they bring it to you. We ordered the Coronarita. Fun concept - similar to a margarita, but with Corona. I ordered it with Mezcal and my sister tried it with tequila. I liked the tasted at first but as the beer combined slowly with the other liquers it took on a funky taste we did not like. The cauliflower was excellent - the florets are dusted in rice flour and flash fried then topped with pepper jam. Just the right crispy texture and the pepper jam was the perfect compliment. The Feta burger was super tasty and we enjoyed the fries as well. I would definitely visit again.

Yelp
Nice space - smaller than I thought. Music was a little weird. Service was fast. Order @ the bar and they bring it to you. Food was hit or miss. Wings - he wasn't a fan. Burger - yum! Feta burger - okay. Wrap - okay Fries - delish Goup - yummy Strong Island - he wasn't a fan Cucumber margarita - "refreshing" but wouldn't be a go-to choice Dole whip - really good and refreshing. Didn't taste the alcohol but that's okay. We sat outside on a warm sunny day. I liked the space but wish they had some shade coverage as an option (that isn't inside) so the sun wasn't beating down on the whole patio.

Yelp
I had seen posts about this place on social media and made a note to check them out. I checked out their menu before going to have an idea of what I wanted to order. Contrary to the name, there are no shakes offered here but they have a burger and hand cut fries that interested me enough to proceed. The staff is very friendly and welcoming into the space. Having already reviewed the menu, I knew I wanted to order the Chicharrones to start then the Burger and Fries. Everything was prepared fresh and was full of flavor.

Yelp
Despite the name, there's nothing dirty about Dirty Shake. Even the drinks are crystal clear, thoughtful, and well-crafted. I wish I had a picture of my Freezer Door Martini because it was so beautiful: perfectly chilled and crystal clear with a variety of additions (no vermouth!) that really highlighted the botanicals in the Beefeater Gin. Alas, sometimes I struggle with being "that person" who is taking pictures of everything vs being a good Yelper :-/ I did get a snap of the Strong Island Ice Tea which is, as the name implies, very strong but also sweet with the use of honey liqueur as the main sweetener. I like the coke float deal on top and the combination of high quality liquors such as Planteray Rum, Barenjager, etc. They also have food and we were impressed with the happy meal options and the fact you can still come in and get a $4 beer too as well as a variety of NA drinks. Service was very friendly and I look forward coming back for a happy meal or a hummer or a dole whip and soaking up some sun on their expansive patio this summer!

Yelp
Best way I can describe this is as an upscale dive bar... the indoor/outdoor set up is nice. When I heard the group who owns the place opened this up I wanted to come check it out because they have another spot whose drinks I really like. But I'd probably rather have a cheap Long Island than this one with the fancier ingredients... it didn't come together well for me. The jerk chicken pita was okay, I might be tripping but it tasted more like Tysons frozen than fresh chicken breast. I understand what they're trying to do though... cheap bar eats and beers for the college kids. Probably a good place to hang out and have a few beers and shots before a game.

Yelp
The ambiance was nice. Open ledge to eat at that's two sided inside and outside. Comfortable couches to sit on. Other indoor and outdoor seating. The service started off a little shaky. Had to wait a bit to be helped, the hellos when we entered were dry....but once they helped us and took our order, the service went much better. The food was pretty tasty! The wings, fries, and pork rinds were delicious. The cauliflower was okay. My Dole whip smoothie drink was good but could not taste any alcohol. We enjoyed the atmosphere and relaxed vibe.

Yelp
Stumbled upon this place while in town, and returned a few times. Both the indoor and outdoor space are casually comfortable. Employees were friendly, there was a wide spectrum of music playing, great selection of beverages and a solid reasonably priced food menu. The grilled kolbassy with kraut and homemade pickles paired perfectly with our drinks. They are not lying their strong island is not for the faint of heart. Two will do. In talking to some other patrons we discovered this is a new addition to the neighborhood. They seem to have what it takes to succeed. Highly recommend checking them out.

Yelp
This place is ideal for relaxing on the patio after work. Grab an ice-cold beer and some whole wings -- you really can't go wrong. The wings are large, crispy, perfectly seasoned, and absolutely delicious! Service was fast and super friendly. I'll definitely be back.

Yelp
The staff were super nice. My friend got the veggie burger and it was the best burger I've had in my life. I forgot to take a picture of it. I got the shrimp and peaches, which was good, not great . The fries had a great homemade kind of taste

Yelp
Dirty Shake is new to the Cass Corridor scene. I was excited to check it out. I met up with a friend after work and this place was poppin' with activity. Luckily my friend grabbed us seats at the bar because as the night rolled on it was a packed house. The bartenders were fantastic and so helpful walking us through the menu. We both did a shot of tequila and ordered a cocktail from the unique list of boozy options. The overall theme here is a twist on the classics and over the top creations. We both had the Strong Long Island (limit 2) and the Dirty XAI. For food we ordered the Cauliflower which was absolutely amazing...pepper jam and topped with cilantro and scallions!!!! My friend ordered the House Burger and his face told the story! lol He said it was one of the best burgers he's ever had! I of course had to try it. The burger reminded be of a butter burger...fantastic! If you're in the area or just passing through...check it out!

Yelp
Fun vibe inside industrial laid back, order at the bar find a seat inside or out, comfy couches, bar area and tables. Loved the burger, shared Goup dip and fries, lots of drinks available, and non alcoholic options.

Yelp
Food was ok - nothing that REALLY stood out , & burgers & fries w/a drink for 4 were $120. Not worth it. But what really annoys me is the tipping scam. You order & pay '(including tip) up front' the they deliver to your table. In our case, 3 of the 4 dinners came with the waiter saying the other would be 'right out'. OK, We waited . . . The waiter then said the last burger was 'coming up from the basement'? . . . About 10-15 minutes after the 1st 3 dinners were delivered, the final one appeared. Not good. But because we had to pay up front, I'd already given a generous tip. I'm OK w/generous tipping - wait staff can work really hard - I get it. BUT, when the dining experience isn't satisfactory & there's no acknowledgement of the issue AND they've pocketed a tip clearly not commensurate with the restaurant performance, then I leave pissed off & looking forward to their going out of business, which is what I suspect will happen here. There are better burgers within close proximity (Bronx bar, anchor bar, Tony's, . . .) more reasonably priced with better service that use the 'old school' approach of paying & tipping AFTER you're done,so you can tip appropriately.

Yelp
Vegan options burgers fry's recommendations happy meal. Service amazing (bar service)

Yelp
Dirty Shake was fantastic! The food was delicious and arrived hot. The wings were huge, perfectly cooked, juicy and tasted great on their own or with the sauces they provided in a caddy. The Cauliflower was so delicious - more than I expected and I'll order them on my next visit for sure. My daughter's cocktail was creative and also tasted great. (Although I don't remember the name of it). The servers and staff were cool, friendly, and provided great service. Overall this new neighborhood place had a great vibe and I expect we will be returning soon and looking forward to dining out on the deck this summer.

Yvette T.

Yelp
This was the first time patronizing this establishment. The double burger and fries were awesome. The burger was flavorful and juicy and the French fries taste like fries made from scratch not frozen.
