Dish Society Will Soon Debut Two More Houston Area Locations - Eater Houston

"The farm-to-table restaurant Dish Society will open two new outposts in the coming months, rounding out its count to five area locations. The locally focused eatery will debut in Finn Hall when the food hall opens next week, followed by a location at 1050 Yale Street in the Heights mid-January. Finn Hall will offer up a condensed menu of Dish Society’s brunch favorites like fried chicken biscuits, brisket ‘n’ eggs, shrimp and grits, and breakfast tacos, and for lunch and dinner, sandwiches, salads, small bites, and entrees like the brisket-stuffed sweet potato and 44 Farms chimichurri steak tacos. The pared-down drinks selection will include drip coffee, soda, sparkling water, and kombucha. Dish Society’s Finn Hall spot will also serve as a test kitchen for new menu items." - Alaena Hostetter

Affordable, straightforward American dishes We tried four entrees at Dish Society: 2 chicken farmers plates, shrimp & grits, and citrus grilled salmon. Dishes were pretty tasty but on the saltier side. The chicken was a bit dry but the salmon was grilled perfectly. Service is solid. You place and pay for your order at the counter, take a seat, and then they bring out the food to your table. The interior is open, bright and airy. Booths are comfy but the chairs are a tad bit heavy.

Awesome food and drinks, the whole family had brunch here to celebrate Mother's Day. You order like you are at a cafeteria and then take a seat. Within minutes your drinks show up and shortly after your food as well. It was packed when we were there but everything functioning ed smoothly! I can't wait to go again

The place is very nice. The staff to take your order very friendly and polite. The food has a great flavor and taste. The presentation of the food very elegant and nice. The restaurant is very busy, a lot of people come in and out. The terrace is very nice and cozy. The restroom were clean.

The hot chicken sandwich and smoked Gouda grits are amazing! My grits came out a little cold but they were still tasty. I’m not sure I’m a huge fan of the line to place your order. People in front of you may not know what they want but you have to wait until they are ready unless you go to the bar. Maybe have two lines; “ready to order” & “not quite”. Atmosphere is really nice. Reasonable prices. I didn’t see a plate that came from the kitchen that I didn’t want to try. Definitely on my list of places to visit while in Houston.

Ordered the seasonal grain bowl on uber eats and this will be my last time getting food from here. First of all, they are SCAMMING people on Uber eats. A salmon skewer was $7 extra and they give you a third of the skewer. The bowl was slimy and inedible because of how oily it was. Every part of it was drenched in cheap cooking oil even the fresh arugula.

Dish Society is an absolute gem! My husband and I always come here, but on this particular Sunday, I was not feeling my best on 5/5/24.We were greeted by the manager, but my interaction with the cashier, Soshi (xo), made my day. She was kind, bubbly, and sweet, just brightening my day. Their food is beyond amazing; every bite bursts with flavor and freshness. But what truly sets them apart is their outstanding customer service. From the warm welcome at the door to the attentive servers, every interaction is delightful. A special shoutout to the manager and Soshi, whose professionalism and friendliness made our experience even more memorable. Thank you, Dish Society, for consistently delivering excellence!

Google
1. The price is on the higher end for the food. 2. Food is unique but with average taste, nothing Wow factor 3. Atmosphere is amazing, must try outdoor setting, unique cooling setup patio. 4. Service was quick, not much waiting time. 5. Give a try to this place.

Updated review::: Thought I’d give this place another shot. The staff was friendly the food came out fast. And it was a good experience. Thanks Vince! Old review:::::::Stopped in at this restaurant for the first time on a chilly evening here near West U. The biscuits and gravy is why we stopped in! The biscuits and gravy were served Luke warm with barely any gravy. After waiting over 30 minutes for the food, I asked the server for a little bit more gravy since the biscuits were so dry and came with barely any gravy. The server made me feel like he was doing me a favor by getting me more gravy when I asked. The service was over all extremely slow and it wasn’t terribly busy. The deconstructed pot pie was piping hot and we couldn’t even eat it!! So we took it to go. It wasn’t good left over. Wish I had a better experience here since this location is close to my house!

Yelp
This location was the absolute BEST!! We went for Mothers Day and everything was amazing! No complaints at all! Our food was delicious and I had the best espresso martini! It's super cute and everyone was super nice, helpful and attentive. 10/10 for sure! Will definitely be back.

Yelp
Love our local Dish We adore the managers and are always well taken care of. The food is consistently good, I like that the menu is seasonally rotated, and the patio is nice when it's not ungodly hot outside - even then, they still have fans and it's in the shade.

Yelp
My cousin and I ate here for our first time and I have to say, 20/10!!! The service was amazing the food was spectacular and most importantly, Katie the manager went above and beyond for us! She brought us out free dessert to try. It is safe to say we will be back and we will be telling all of our friends about this place. Thank you Dish Society!! Don't even hesitate to come eat here. RUN!!

Yelp
Great spot for a no-frills brunch. Ambiance is more casual - order at the front and they bring the food out to you. The interior is cleanly decorated. Food is tasty. I've had the house omelette and southwest scramble. Parking lot is huge, which is a plus in the westU area. The portion sizes are decent and I have enough to take home for leftovers but it is on the pricier end As with most brunch spots, know that that there are limited vegan options if you don't want to eat egg.

Yelp
XO- I LOVE YOU! Your personality is amazing and your service is top tier. She recommended the brisket, eggs, and grits and it did not disappoint! Me being the big backian that I am, also ordered a buttermilk biscuit on the side with some honey- taste just like my grandmother's biscuits! Delicious. The vibes were great, the music was great too, I was wiggling in my chair to some Stevie Wonder. Perfect. If you find yourself in Houston- COME HERE! And lastly- a carafe of mimosa is $17 WHERE THEY DO THAT AT?!!!
google avatar

Yelp
There are counters in the corner where you order your food, and then they bring your food to you. We got a lot of junk food when we went one afternoon. The hot chicken sandwich with a pretzel style bun was nice. Loved how they put pickled onions with the cole slaw in it. The Nutella French toast was also pretty good. Wish they had more Nutella on it though. I liked how their beignets had a coffee flavored sauce with it.

Yelp
Came to Dish Society (West U) for brunch. The scenery was lovely and very eco friendly. I appreciated the organicness and freshness of the food. I ordered toast, sunny side up eggs, and a fruit bowl. The food was alright however for the price it's on the higher end for traditional breakfast. I would come back again to try the Brisket and Eggs as the reviews have been fabulous for those. Overall, the staff were friendly and it was in a nice location. The food I ordered just didn't meet the mark.

Yelp
Great spot for a no-fuss breakfast bite! Great service and fantastic food. Tons of options provided.

Yelp
I had to take a quick trip to Houston and found this awesome spot tucked into a corner of a shopping strip. As you walk up you are greeted with a cute outdoor patio to the left with lots of gorgeous plants and succulents. You place your order at the counter then they give you a number and bring you your order. I got the coffee and brisket tostada and nothing was disappointing! And the perk is that with a Yelp check-in I got a free order of their grit balls! The coffee was brewed to perfection, very smooth and no bitterness like it has been sitting. The tostada was lovely, lots of different textures from the beans, cheese, eggs. I do wish the brisket would have had a bit more fat and flavor but it was still good. The grit balls were delicious! Very unique, light and fluffy which was nice surprise, I was expecting something dense. The service was absolutely amazing. I was greeted, very well tended to, and never ran out of coffee or water. The service was so impressive, if all places gave that type of service the world would be a better place!

Yelp
You order food at the back and then you seat yourself. Cute and casual brunchy place with an expansive menu with dietary options.

Yelp
This is a very nice brunch place and the service is great. I had the chicken and biscuits and I thought it was too salty. I also tried the chicken sandwich and it was delicious. The fries were crispy and fresh. I would definitely try this place again for brunch as the environment is very nice and they have a bar available.
google avatar

Yelp
My husband and I came here for breakfast. He ordered shrimp and grits, I got chicken and biscuits. We also each got a Bloody Mary. The food was excellent! Great flavor/seasoning for the shrimp and grits. The chicken was delicious as well. I like an extra spicy Bloody Mary, my husband does not. These were right in the middle, very good! Would definitely come here again.

Yelp
Had brunch here. Service was really good considering they were packed on a sunday with a 25-30 wait time on food. Everybody loves brunch. They weren't totally packed but pretty busy. The drinks were good. I had a laloma (a blood orange paloma) and a regular paloma, both were tasty. They did have flavored mimosas and flights which I didn't try. But it's offered. My friend had the expression martini and said that was also good. My friend had the chicken sandwich and said that was pretty good. I had the brisket plate and the beignets. Both were very good. I like how they have various menu items to try. I'll definitely go back to try more.

Yelp
We'll take out I guess is a no. Ordered a sandwich, the pretzel app, grit balls, quinoa stuff avocado. The pretzels were packed in a greasy bag with *no dipping sauce...that's kinda the whole point of the dish. The stuffed avocado SALAD (one of my favs) had a maybe 4 leafs if wilted greens, a vapor of dressing if any, no purple onions/tomatoes. What a disappointment. I threw away the greasy soy not crispy pretzels bc I had nothing to dip the in, so what's the point? I mean that's why we did take out bc we had nothing "good" to eat at home. The salad wasn't a salad; the chicken was bland - I just really expected better from DS. Maybe some QC procedures for take out would be a good add.
google avatar

Annel H.

Yelp
First time trying Dish society gotta say they exceeded my expectations. The food was delicious I ordered the stuffed avocado(forgot to take photos) but the dish was beautiful so much green in it lol. Being our first time, we appreciated that the manager Vince came to introduce himself and offered some great choices before we ordered. He also added that kids eat free on Tuesdays! Overall, the place was very clean and the staff were very polite. Great place for brunch, or lunch. Great customer service, very welcoming will definitely be coming back! Vast parking too!

Yelp
Dish society has delicious, affordable healthy brunch options. It's locavore friendly + counter serve

Yelp
Overall, this is a decent brunch spot. I stopped by on a hot Houston Sunday for brunch with a friend. They are very busy for brunch - we stood in a long line that fortunately moved quickly. I ordered the House Breakfast Tacos while my friend decided on the Brisket and Eggs. I was pleasantly surprised to find a check in offer for a complimentary order of Smoked Gouda Grit Balls. The staff were very pleasant and quickly put in our orders. We were lucky to find a table as the restaurant was pretty packed. They have both indoor and outdoor seating (and we of course opted for indoor in the Houston heat)! Our food came out quickly and looked great. We tried the smoked Gouda grit balls first and enjoyed them. They have a good mix of the grit and cheesy flavor and had a nice crunchy exterior. They paired well with the sauce. The breakfast tacos were not quite what I expected. I enjoyed the corn tortilla but found them a bit too oily and cheesy for my taste. I probably wouldn't order them again. However, several of their pancake options looked tasty and I might come by again to try them!
google avatar

Yelp
Great spot for casual brunch with healthy but delicious meals. We got some mimosas and boudin balls to share. I went with the BLT sandwich with fries which was a good portion and not super heavy
google avatar

Yelp
This was our first trip to Dish Society & the food was pretty good, but the portions were too big. I had the Chicken & Biscuit w/gravy, which was 2 chicken biscuits. Good flavor, but too much to eat in one sitting. I'm from out of town, so I couldn't take it with me. My husband had a cook to order omelette, which he enjoyed, but the potatoes that came with it were cold. The service seemed slow, since several people who ordered after us got their food before we did. The ice tea was freshly brewed & the coffee was hot & strong. The restaurant was clean, as were the bathrooms. All in all, we would try this restaurant again if we come back to town.

Yelp
I had never been to one of these establishments before. The happy hour menu is amazing and so are the food choices. I opted for the breakfast skillet which was very filling. I got a side of bacon which barely had any flavor. I ordered an espresso martini which was pretty good. The concept was different than any brunch place I've been to. You order , receive a number, and the food is brought out to you. If you need drink refills you must get up and get it yourself. Had I known this i would have gone somewhere else. Part of the charm of eating out , unless you're doing to a fast food joint, is to be served. It was an experience but I don't see my self returning unless it's for happy hour and I sit at the bar

Yelp
We came here for Eid breakfast on Tuesday at around 9 am and it wasn't too busy. The manager and staff were so kind and helpful when answering all our questions. The food was fantastic and the service was amazing. I wish I remembered the managers name because he was such a stellar host. He knew it was Eid and even gave us some warm beignets on the house. This was such a great experience overall and we cannot wait to be back very soon.

Yelp
This popular brunch spot is located in a nicer shopping center area filled with tons of stores and restaurants! One orders at the counter, gets a number, and a server will bring all food and drinks to your table. Our group got the Fancy-Mosa flight where our favorite flavors were the prickly pear and pineapple-orange. Each of our meals tasted fresh even though they were quickly turned around for service. The Nutella French Toast was not as chocolate packed as expected so the restaurant offered an alternative meal free of charge for the kids. Overall we loved the aesthetic, mix of indoor and outdoor seating, food quality, and menu offerings. Our local friends will certainly be back for more!!

Yelp
Overview: We were in town traveling and found this breakfast spot. Not super familiar with the area, but inside it felt very clean and well lit. It had a modern feel with some great food. Service: Service was unique. It looks like they might have just started doing a self service where you order at the counter and then choose your table. Most people that walked in seemed confused, so just make sure you look at the menu beforehand especially if you have a large group. Anytime you have to get a refill you have to go back up. The service was super quick and most people's orders were in and out in a matter of a few minutes. This is more of a quicker place than a long sit down. There was one main person interacting with guests and trying to suggest the best seating and they had a couple others delivering the food. The main person was friendly and trying to accommodate everyone. Food: the food was delicious. Shrimp and grits had a very strong Gouda taste. The beignets were the best part and really sweet. All the food looked fresh and I wish we could have tried more dishes!
google avatar

James H.

Yelp
We ordered the brisket stuffed sweet potato, shrimp and grits and salmon poke bowl. Appetizers were pretzel and gouda, hummus plate. In summary: every flavor was noticeable, the freshness was evident, the staff was friendly and hospitable and the food came out hot and on time. From the shredded gouda for the sauce, the mint in the hummus; the shrimp I used to mop up the sauce, to the balance of the poke bowl, I can't recommend enough this lovely find in Houston. I hope to come again the next time I'm in town.

Yelp
The Houston Hot Chicken sandwich was not spicy at all and the buns were dry. 20 minutes after eating here I found myself nauseous and ended up vomiting. (There was sadly more flavor on the way out than there was on the way in.) I told one of my coworkers about this and he mentioned he had gotten sick from their chicken and biscuits somewhat recently as well. I wouldn't come back even if everything was 1/3 the price because it's truly not worth it. The only saving grace was that the manager or shift lead was doing a great job at walking around making sure all guests were doing okay.
google avatar

Yelp
Pleasant, casual atmosphere. Friendly & helpful staff. Our meals were fresh & the baked goods very tasty!

Yelp
Nice casual restaurant to meet family or friends for brunch or dinner. Great menu with so many options. Order at the cashier and then find a place to sit inside or outside. Started with an avocado toast. Lemon zested mascarpone and local honey spread on a toasted slice of whole grain bread topped with sliced fresh avocados and a sunny side up egg. Sprinkled with a splash of everything but the bagel seasoning. So delicious. For dinner, the deconstructed chicken pot pie was so fun as an entree. Chicken, peas, carrots, potatoes and onions in a creamy pot pie base served with triangles of puff pastry. Get a full or a half portion. So perfect on a chilly winter evening. Our friend liked his burger and fries. Sat outside on the patio, but could have sat anywhere on an unusually quiet Friday evening. Nice to have outdoor heaters. Our waiter came to check on us a couple of times. Parking is so easy. Hints: check in for a free order of smoked Gouda grits. (Will have to use that coupon next time). Save the flyers that come in the mail for a free appetizer or dessert. They don't expire. Use the coupons in the community magazine for BOGO entrees, salads or sandwiches.

Yelp
I come to this dish quite often, and as much as I want to try something new I always end up eating the same thing. Chicken and biscuits! They are really good although inconsistent in flavor and portions. Sometimes there's plenty of gravy other times it's very dry. The "make it spicy" is really spicy! In a good way. The fancy mosas weren't as "fancy" as the Katy location if you know what I mean. There's usually a crowd but you can always find a table and the cashiers are always friendly.
google avatar

K J.

Yelp
Fantastic food and great ambiance! The manager was wonderful and be sure to try the chicken & biscuits or shrimp and grits! You won't be disappointed.
google avatar

Jason U.

Yelp
Came here for lunch with a friend. Very casual spot options for brunch, lunch or dinner. Order at the front, get a number, and the food/drinks will be brought to you. Staff was nice. Food not bad, however, I do like my biscuits more on the fluffy side on the inside and crispy on the outside. Gravy was interesting, not the typical gravy that I'm accustomed to when going to brunch/southern comfort food spots. No complaints on the chicken, fried well and juicy. Solid place but I definitely enjoyed some other brunch/southern comfort food places a bit more.
google avatar

Dan Q.

Yelp
Perfectly acceptable for a business lunch or date brunch. Mediocre food but inoffensive, only a bit overpriced, corporate atmosphere. Won't return.
google avatar

Mahwish S.

Yelp
First come first serve seating but you do have to get in line to order first before you can sit down to get a table. So you can't send a friend to hold down the table and Their outside patio area isn't that big. They give you a number and bring the food and drinks out to you. I do like that they use fresh ingredients and allow substitutions. I did fried chicken in my southern skillet instead of pork sausage. Added a little hot sauce and it was good! The pancake was buttery and fluffy. Just beware, the fancy mimosas will sneak up on you! We had the Orange-Vodka and Prickly Pear. It tastes like juice but before I got home I definitely felt them and had to take a nap. Out of the two the Prickly Pear was my favorite.
google avatar

Noleena B.

Yelp
I enjoyed the casual ambiance. You must order ahead and pay before sitting. I had a vegetarian option, House Omelet and the Gluten Free pancake. Both were tasty if you looking a more healthier option for brunch. The staff was very nice and knowledgeable about the menu. They also exercise extra care and accommodated my food allergy and sensitivity. The size and portion of food is reasonable for price.
google avatar

Jim S.

Yelp
What a delightful surprise in Houston on Belair St., Maddie, the manager was great and the food was excellent, southern comfort, meets sophisticated, gourmet. I mean who serves fried grits, balls, and beignets in the same restaurant with salmon and a delicious salad entrees. This is a franchise sensation, waiting to happen
google avatar

Mary G.

Yelp
The shrimp and grits was very good. I got it to go. Also I don't eat meat so I got it without bacon crumbles on it. I was impressed. I picked it up curbside and they came out immediately. I also order toast and it came with jelly. That jelly is the best!! My my my it was so good. The only reason why I didn't give 5 stars is because the waiter didn't give me a total before taking my card in and he didn't ask me or give me a receipt. I was glad he was fast but customers need to know cost. I wasn't even able to sign for a tip. Other than that I will reorder again. So go try it!!!
google avatar

Mike M.

Yelp
There are several of these restaurants in the Greater Houston area and I dined at this one last Friday night. Parking spaces are plentiful in front and after walking in saw that this is a counter service facility that also includes a full bar. After reviewing the menu, I chose the shrimp and grits entree for $18.75 and adding a tall beer from the bar. The food arrived about 20 minutes later. This meal comes with an egg on top in your chosen style and I went with sunny side up. Under the egg were several grilled shrimp with tails on along with smoked Gouda grits and a butter sauce with bacon crumbles. This meal was delicious. After relieving the shrimp of their tails the smoked grits, bacon, butter sauce all came together with that runny egg yolk to make a very satisfying meal. I wouldn't hesitate to order this again. The staff told me the brisket stuffed sweet baked potato is also excellent. Maybe I'll try that next time....tough decision.
google avatar

Josh Y.

Yelp
So it's a nice restaurant, and we had a nice time and the food tasted good and was reasonably priced, but we left and had stomach aches (and other unpleasant digestive complications) immediately after. Maybe the grits were bad? Anyway, at this price point and with this sort of format, getting sick from brunch is not on the menu. 1 star.
google avatar

Nyjah J.

Yelp
I love the food and drinks at this place. It is my favorite place to go for brunch. I go on Saturday mornings and the customer service is immaculate.
google avatar

Dominique D.

Yelp
I normally come to this dish society all the time. Normally there's another manger, this manger I believe his name is Yonce was rude, cold and unwelcoming. Walk in, mind you the establishment is empty. He made eye contact and did not greet me. I had to go out my way to get the man to say hello. I was so uncomfortable I got my money back and was about to leave.... Right before I was about to leave the manger I was referring to earlier, Vince walked in and saw the look on my face. Ugh that's an awesome man! Turned me around and treated me like he always does. Pure awesomeness!!!!! VINCE IS THE MAN! If he's not here LEAVE. Initially, I was gonna put one star because on Yonce but Vince saved the day, so I'm putting five

Yelp
Food and service was great. My niece was celebrating her birthday and she had a good time.

Yelp
Dish Society has a low key brunch spot vibe. The restaurant is unique from other brunch places that I have been to as they allow you to order all your food/drinks in a line right at the door prior to seating. There is a friendly and helpful attendant(?) at the door to help direct you. Food was delicious and portion sizes generous. We ordered two of the popular dishes and sure did they not disappoint! My favorite was the Chicken and Biscuits with gravy that was creamy and two large buttery biscuits. Would also recommend their Brisket 'N' Eggs with smoky chopped brisket.
google avatar

Jasmine M.

Yelp
They are a hit or miss. I did enjoy the new veggie spaghetti with mushrooms. I do like the fact that they offer many options and the menu changes ever so often .Great coffee
google avatar

Jennifer G.

Yelp
Much better our second visit. Food arrived promptly and beignets are still amazing. Nice touch of lavender in the biscuit gravy. I was very surprised by the hot chicken sandwich. Really tasty not just overwhelmingly hot, and the pretzel bun was super soft.
google avatar

Ashley G.

Yelp
If you are looking for a family friendly place to check out, Dish Society is a nice option. I went there for brunch on Sunday and the service was impeccable! While it was a short wait for our order to be taken, we were able to order and sit down very quickly. We must have came during a rush but there was staff there making sure everyone had a clean table. The coffee wasn't the greatest but then again, I am sure most people don't come for the coffee. The Houston Hot Chicken Sandwich was amazing! Definitely spicy but by far one of the best "Hot Chicken" sandwiches I have had since the new hot chicken crave has started. The chicken and biscuits were just okay nothing to really get excited about.
google avatar

Mo L.

Yelp
I ordered the Brisket and Eggs dish with an appetizer - Fried Smoked Gouda Grit Balls appetizer and coffee. I've never had brisket with my eggs before so I was a little excited to try something new and I was not disappointed. The brisket was tender and had a good flavor. I liked the bits of pickled onions that were sprinkled on top. They were a good compliment. Their coffee was a dark roast and I enjoyed the full flavor. I will definitely order it again. We ordered and paid for our food first then the food was brought to our table. The place had a casual modern look. The service was good, but one man definitely impressed and shined more than the rest. He helped me with getting my coffee and made sure we were happy and had everything we needed. He made me feel that he cared about the customers and cared about the restaurant. Maybe he was a manager or the owner. Seeing committed employees or owners brings a specialness to the experience and a specialness to the restaurant. The menu has many interesting dishes and I'll definitely keep going back to try them. Plus they have brunch all day. I recommend this restaurant.
google avatar

Josh W.

Yelp
Great atmosphere and location. The food was good and service was okay. You order up front and then food is brought to your table. It's worth checking out.
google avatar

Gary W.

Yelp
Every detail has been meticulously thought out in designing the interior of the restaurant from the white chairs with yellow accent complementing the geometric patterns on the wall to the yellow/lime green tables blending with the aesthetic of cinderblocks. Did not have Charleston grits, but their version of Shrimp and Grits with Gulf Shrimp topped with Gouda cheese and fried egg was a hit. The inside can get a bit cold so coming from the humid Texas weather you might want to bring a jacket with you.
google avatar

Bailey C.

Yelp
Stood and waited at the register at 8am and no one came by, then I went to the bar thinking someone would help me, nope. Had to leave.
google avatar

Yelp
Great location. Open ambiance and the food is very good. Staff is very friendly too. First time coming to this location. Will definitely come back with the hubby

Yelp
I love Dish, that must be said before I write anymore. However, this particular location lacks in atmosphere. I much prefer the one on San Felipe. Alas, I don't live in Tanglewood anymore and this place is a great must-have for West U residents. All their menu items are delicious; I especially love the salmon entree and mashed sweet potato... and the loaded sweet potato! The atmosphere thing I'm talking about is that it feels more like a Cafe Express than a DS. Yes, the San Felipe location is similar, but it's smaller and has a outdoor patio. Plus, the staff and decor seems more personable.
