A great experience for fans of Disney, or for families looking for a more kid-friendly experience (without casinos or cruise drunks), but lacking in high quality food and the events were difficult to book when competing with gold/platinum members.
This was our very first cruise ever and overall it was an excellent experience. We did a 5 night Bahamian cruise with port of calls at Cozumel and Castaway Cay.
The booking experience was fairly easy. The main advice we have is to have your photos ready in advance, then book all of your events when they open to you. Do this as early as possible as the events fill up extremely quickly, especially the character meets (Royal Gathering) or luxury cabanas on the island.
We organized a Disney shuttle to and from the airport and ... it was shockingly disappointing. We were expecting a Disney theme bus (like the Mickey train at Tokyo Disneyland) but we were greeting with a normal coach bus.
The Everglades Port was extremely efficient and well staffed, and we were boarding the ship within 30 minutes of arriving at the port.
The Disney Dream is a magnificent ship that's in excellent condition, maintained daily, and visibly washed down at every port. The amount of cleaning and work that's being done on the ship before, during and after our cruise was impressive, and we could not find a speck of dust nor spot of rust anywhere onboard.
The service onboard was world-class and represents the Disney brand. It's a cruise experience that really does focus on the Disney magic, with kids becoming princes and princesses, and enough character meet-and-greets to last a lifetime. The staff will remember your food preferences, and rooms service is done 2-3 times a day. We had the navigator's veranda room on deck 5, port side. The room was close to elevators making it very convenient to get around the ship.
The activities onboard were amazing, with several pools on deck 11 and 12, a kiddie water slide, and their main attraction; the AquaDuck. Wait times for AquaDuck varied between 15 minutes to 30 minutes, and it was a very fun ride for younger kids. Adults could relax in the adult area with a hot tub and pool, and there was a very quiet deck 13 that was almost always empty. For our cruise, the movies included Mufasa, Inside Out 2, and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. The live shows (Golden Mickeys, Magic Show with Jon Armstrong, Beauty and the Beast, and Believe!) were all phenomenal. Especially the production value for Beauty and the Beast completely blew us away.
The cruise also hosted several large scale events in the main atrium including a dance party with all the characters, royal gatherings with the princesses, live music, and the "see you real soon" finale.
As this was our first cruise, we opted not to do any excursions and enjoy the port of calls as they were. Cozumel is a charming seaside town with many restaurants and shops. There is a very strong haggle culture, so be prepared. Castaway Cay was an incredibly gorgeous island that was impeccably kept. There were enough benches and resting areas, and the entire beach front was clean and in perfect condition.
The one big issue with this cruise was the food. Seeing so many food reviews of Disney cruises and all the high praise it gets, we were quite disappointed with the quality of the food. While everything was expertly plated and presented, the flavours and quality of ingredients just wasn't there. Cabanas had incredibly quantity and offerings, but the quality was pretty mid. Similarly, the dining offerings for all 3 meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) were all pretty mediocre. I understand there are limitations for how food is prepared on a cruise ship, but perhaps my expectations were skewed by all of the youtube reviews we watched.
Overall, we highly recommend Disney Cruise line for families with young children (age 3-10) to really maximize the Disney magic.
