The Best Cafes in Montreal - Eater Montreal

"Dispatch, which began as a mobile vendor, is a fearless player on Montreal’s coffee scene. The café’s  Mile-Ex outpost doubles as its roaster, while additional locations are on the McGill campus, the Main, and most recently, Toronto. It also has its own national coffee delivery service." - Daniel Bromberg, Eater Staff

"Dispatch Coffee, Mile Ex by Dynamo. From cold brew on tap to avocado toast, life would not be the same without Dispatch. Remote workers and local students frequent these artisanal roasters and cafe religiously. The minimal, industrial decor is the antithesis of the coffee multi-national chains in town. Make sure to catch some rays on their inviting patio. Leaving Mile-Ex? No problem. You'll likely spot their Dispatch truck or their coffee beans sold all over town."

Google
Nice cafe in a quite corner serving a good variety of hot and cold coffee beverages. I tried their black filter coffee and it was perfect. The cafe have a nice outdoor seating area. The staff are superb friendly. Will definitely pass by again when in Montreal :)

Roasted on premises coffee!! How can you not ♥️ that? I had two different Ethiopian coffees prepared two ways (filter drip and cortado), both superb! The aromas of fresh roasted coffee while also drinking coffee was a sensory overload, but amazing for a coffee lover. The staff is super friendly and I enjoyed talking about coffee with them!

No need for lavish decor for a sharp, smokey and robust beverage. The bare essentials are sufficient to get the most out of this natural, efficient coffee with a well-balanced combination of ingredients. Minimal expense for maximum taste.

This place is a hidden gem! Go get their coffee. I got the cold brew on the first day and then cortado with oat milk the next day. The coffee is so balanced, not acidic and very delicious. Can't wait to buy some bags to take home with me. I usually don't go to the same place twice on a trip, but this place deserves several trips! 😍

One of my favourite coffee spots in town. Their cortado is outstanding! The staff is always so friendly and very helpful with suggestions.

Google
I recommend having this coffee with soy milk as it cancels out the acidity levels in the coffee. The soy combination for the latte made delightful taste.I 👌

Yelp
My bf and I are HUGE fans of dispatch coffee. We've been to all the locations on coffee runs and have also ordered their coffee beans online using their subscription (they often have promo codes if you're looking to try the subscription!) The service is always nice and welcoming and they're always helpful if you aren't sure of which coffee is right for you. I definitely miss sitting in the st laurent location as the aethestic of the shop is great! Love their pour overs, cappuccinos, cortados and espresso! Note that their menu prices are café prices ranging from $3-5 depending on your order. If you enjoy a good cup of coffee, try dispatch, you won't be disappointed!

Yelp
Hands down, the best coffee in the entire northeast part of montreal. Love their lattes, pour overs, and cold brews. Each one is perfect every time and service is always friendly! Can't recommend enough. Always come here if I can over anywhere else.

Yelp
Best best best coffee. Friendliest loveliest staff. Croissants are BEYOND - after extensive croissant research and tasting I can verify they have the best. Love this place - and the other location too. But I have a particular fondness for this location and their terrace in summer. Also they roast their own beans and you can buy a subscription service! I have loved dispatch since the early days and will continue to support this business - and encourage everyone else to too!

Yelp
I ordered a iced black coffee. Im not huge avid coffee drinker so I wouldn't be able to judge the quality of the coffee. The coffee was a bit more on the milder side, less bitter and had more of a fruity undertone to it. Overall, very mellow and easily drinkable black. Dispatch has a lot of open space but sadly, not many chairs and even less tables (three 2 people tables and one 4 person table). There are benches at the window to sit and nice cute terrace outside on the street. The cafe is nice and quiet, great for reading a book but not too ideal for studying (tables are on the smaller side and there are only four tables and some bar space).

Yelp
Very interesting coffee shop on an area of St Zotique that is becoming more hipster cool. What I can appreciate is that here they are attempting to change the coffee scene. Many countries do coffee different. Vietnamese drink a coffee that is like strong espresso than mixed with ice and condensed milk it forms a delicious iced coffee drink. Italians who some may say invented the modern day Starbucks style focus on a very strong espresso or mix milk to form cappuccino. Cubans mix a heaping spoonful of sugar in espresso and call it Cuban coffee. In Quebec and Canada Tim Hortons really influences coffee culture by serving a medium dark roast and mixing in their cream and sugar to make for a creamy coffee. Bleh...Tims I try to drink as minimal as possible! Here at Dispatch they do a different roast and it's more of a green roast or lighter roast. Flavour is much more herb like and infuses almost a grain or cereal note. I drank it with no cream or sugar to get the whole taste but it tasted a bit weak to me. If you get a bag of their freshly roasted ground coffee it somewhat resembles fresh marijuana and thus gives off a different flavour. It's different from other coffee places but I'm not so certain I love it but will concur it's original. I usually prefer an extremely strong Italian espresso roast. While at our Elite visit Khai mentioned to try one of their fresh made Oreos so I went with one. Decadent, home made and awesome. I could have eaten 2-3 of them but that would be piggly! The scene here is a bit sterile and mini warehouse feel. People are hanging out coffee house style with computers working or chilling.

Yelp
Walked in here unexpectedly and was absolutely blown away by the knowledge and insight Chris Durning and his team have on how to make an amazing cup of coffee. Chris was running an impromptu tasting that day and for the first time ever I was actually able to tell the difference between the multiple coffees -- when made right (i.e. by Chris) it is no different than a wine, beer or scotch tasting, there are definitely different flavors at play if you pay attention and are guided by someone knowledgeable. Ended up buying the Guji Konjo and following Chris advice, have been able to come much closer than ever before at having a coffee at home that tastes as good as it did in store. It's definitely not the same, but I finally understand what levers to pull to make the coffee taste the way I like it. Simply put, three lessons I took away from Chris: (1) The grinder matters. Uneven grounds result in coffee that dissolves / brews unevenly. Because acid, sugar and bitter molecules are different sizes, the uneven sizes of a poorly ground coffee result in coffee that most likely will be either too acidic or too bitter, even though you followed the proper brew time instructions. (2) Brew time is also a lever you can pull -- brew something longer if it's too acidic, but brew it shorter if its too bitter. (3) It's better to grind the coffee in the shop and drink it quickly (or worst case freeze it) than to use uneven grounds from a cheap in-home grinder. Excited to come back and get even more educated by Chris the next time I'm in MTL.

Yelp
5 months after my first visit, it's still cool af. It's hip, simple, welcoming with a smile. Switching out of overdrive and into Zen gear. This is why I love Montreal

Yelp
Dispatch on St. Zotique is one of my favourite third-wave cafe discoveries in Montreal. Located a little out of the way in Parc-Ex near Alexandraplatz bar, Dispatch is tucked-away right next to Restaurant Manitoba. Their baristas are really excellent and made me probably the most 'perfect' latte I have seen in Montreal, A+. Another glowing star for Dispatch is that they roast their own beans and like Micro-Torrefacteur St. Henri you can actually see the machinery adjacent to the cafe space. They sell bags for $14.50 and $18.00 for 250g and 350g, respectively. The decor is minimal, monochrome, and one of the few spaces in Montreal with a concrete floor. Old battered wood floors are hard to escape in Montreal and it's really refreshing to see Dispatch take design as seriously as their coffee. Also, they have very nice handmade ceramic mugs, vaguely Japanese and a little Monocle. The only minor problem with Dispatch is that there isn't a ton of seating (maybe 5 bar seats and 8-10 seats elsewhere). They do have patio seating, though, which was lovely on a warm day. Overall, highly recommended.

Yelp
first of all what coffee shop closes at 2pm? 2nd problem, i show up at 1.55 for a coffee and the girl says she's already shut down the machine? lame and unfortunate as their coffee is good.

Yelp
Very nice spot. Very friendly and extremely knowledgeable staff. Very human experience. I started with the Biftu Gudina from Ethiopia, which was light and fruity. Next, I had the Palmichal from Columbia, a more rich brew with earthly undertones. I love it when a business has the knowledge and goods to justify snobbishness, but they are instead super friendly and kind. This is so much better than a snobby place with marginal wares and limited knowledge. Nice Cuban music on in the background, and not too loud. Very nice morning muffin. I will be back here again for sure. Thanks!

Yelp
I am thrilled for Chrissy and the Dispatch team for the opening of their flagship! The space is airy with a minimal touch which is what Montreal 3rd wave coffee shops is all about. Chrissy and staff are also very knowledgeable about their coffee and I can't wait till they start roasting their own beans!! I can't recomend this place enough.. Are you still reading this?.. What you waiting for go!!!

Yelp
This is easily the best cold brew in Canada. the desserts are so-so and the food is pretty much non existent but the cold brewed coffee is to die for I just wish they offered different sizes.

Yelp
I think this place is fun and different, I love that they have real coffee and seem so passionate about what they do. The decor inside is contemporary industrial meets chem lab. It's super clean and the people working here are sweet. The homemade soft Oreo cookie is super tasty - too sweet for my liking but I never eat the centre of Oreos (I know it's the "best part" but not for my palette lol) but I would highly recommend trying one. A special note - I adored their complementary water jugs and glasses, they really nailed every detail in this place.

Yelp
For purposes of this spot staying under the radar the thought of a 1 star crossed my mind but I'd be a traitor and a fool. Dispatch coffee + toast has become a Sunday morning ritual with me, my man and my dog. Well doesn't that sound like a Kodak moment. The coffee is superb. Menu superb. Toast options come both sweet and savoury. I go for the egg, fennel and dill every time. But you, do you.

Yelp
If your a scouting agent for films or shows and you need the ultimate Hipster location shot- look no further. Comes complete with industrial-chic theme, gender neutral staff, tight jeaned 20 and 30 something clientele and you won't even need to bring the fixies or knock off vespas to park in front for the outside shot- it's all set up for you at all hours. Oh- and you can get a decent coffee too.

Yelp
A coffee geek's treat. This place knows its coffee. My Pourover was perfect. The space is chic and airy. The staff was very friendly. There aren't a lot of seats inside but the outside had more. I love how tucked away it is. It's well worth finding. Oh, and they have homemade nut milk.

Yelp
Delicious coffee, friendly faces, plenty of bike parking and places to tie up your dog, free wifi, open space and delicious things on toast!! I love it here :)
google avatar

Ita S.

Yelp
This is a coffee temple, they make their own coffee, extremely knowledgeable about it, and if you are lucky enough to see a coffee tasting of a new batch is made, you get to see what a true passion looks like. I would call it a lab for excellency but the friendly staff makes it into a very welcoming space. Don't hesitate to ask anything, they will gladly talk to you about everything that has to do with coffee, from the farms it grows at to the procedure of making it. This is a place to explore, try new things, or just get a good old cup of joe and relax at the terrace, watching the awakening of the Mile-Ex neighborhood.

Yelp
One of the best coffee in town. But not only. Amazing sandwiches, gripping cakes and wonderful granola.

Yelp
Great coffee bar. Coffee tastes as good as what we can find in some of my favourite mtl expresso bars. Excellent service. Did not have oreo cookie but they looked delicious. Location is a little hard to find on St-Zotique. Unique machines.

Yelp
Best Coffee in Montreal, the 8th wonder of the world. No more watered down tasteless coffee. Only the best!!!

Yelp
It is the best cafe in Montreal. They are at a different level. Another league. I am an espresso lover and their espresso is heaven. Everything is well balanced.
google avatar

Paula E.

Yelp
I'm still dreaming of going back there, possibly the best coffee I've had in Montreal!!

Mari S.

Yelp
Really wanted to like their coffee but the latte I consumed was...well I have had better coffee at big chains people sneer at. The taste was good, like I can tell the beans are good but the milk was very improper and was basically haphazard latte art on a thin layer of foam as the milk was not heated properly and kind of watery. I'll give them another try but I think the barista did not put in the work that goes into a quality cup, and for five bucks I expected better.
google avatar

Eric S.

Yelp
Possibly the best coffee shop in Montreal, this place has it all. They offer a wide variety of single-origin coffees as pour-overs, batch drip or espresso. They roast in-house and change their selection often. The staff is very approachable and friendly, showing a lot of interest in talking coffee.
google avatar

Yelp
We can all agree their coffee is amazing, but can I tell you about their tasty toasts? I was recently visiting Montreal and had the pleasure of dropping in on Dispatch Coffee at their newest location. I previously enjoyed their pop up location at McGill. This location continues to serve their house roasted coffee and artisan hot chocolate - but it also has the yummiest egg salad toasts I have ever tasted. I want to mention how I am not usually a fan of egg salad - too many egg salad sandwiches for lunch when I was growing up - but when I saw someone else have a rye toast with egg salad, I knew I wanted to try it. I wasn't disappointed. It was fresh, delicious, substantial, with a nice dusting of pepper and salt. Yummy. My mouth is watering just thinking about it. The staff are so friendly and warm - with huge welcoming smiles on their faces. The decor is simple and appealing. If you take a picture with their black walls in the background, the people in the picture look amazing. Plenty of street parking. I would highly recommend Dispatch Coffee. Thanks for opening up a store.
