Distant Brewing - Review - Downtown - Mammoth - The Infatuation

"Located in the old Mammoth Police Station, Distant Brewing is a casual spot that does a full menu of bar food, as well as live music and, you guessed it, plenty of beer. The menu includes pizzas, sandwiches, and soft pretzels, but we usually go for the chicken skewers served with sweet teriyaki sauce and a side of coleslaw. Beyond the food, Distant Brewing has over a dozen beers on tap (the best are the El Camino Sierra, a Mexican lager, or Honey Baked, an amber ale), and a handful of non-alcoholic beer. You’ll find many Mammoth locals (and their dogs) here, and it’s best used for a quick bite and a beer." - Danielle Bauter

Google
Best brewery in town. Dog friendly. Our go to every time we visit. Just heads up their kitchen is being renovated this week so a little noisy but it should be back up and running this weekend.

Google
Great atmosphere! We tried a flight of four beers and my husband got a pint of the Sea to Summit which we both liked the best. The food is delicious.

Google
I visit this place each time I come to Mammoth for the beers. The food is decent as well. We liked the pulled pork sandwiches but the French dip lacks flavor. Beer pricing is good but $16 for a sandwich with a bag of chips is getting out of hand.

Google
Very good stout! Very heavy and strong! I recommend it. They have a couple pool tables and play music on weekends. It's pretty crowded. Parking might be difficult during peak season. Cushy couches are also a big plus!

Rahul Rajeev

Google
Very cozy brewery with a live stage, pool tables and outdoor seating. Extremely dog friendly as well!

Google
The beer was great. The food was pretty good. The service was awful. The girls behind the bar were more interested in chatting than helping customers. We had to go ask to place and order and go ask to pay. They could have done much better.

Google
Tried Distant Brewing our first night in Mammoth. We went back two nights later because it was SO GOOD! Between the two visits we ate CARNITAS PIZZA, BACON MAC & CHEESE, PRETZELS WITH BEER CHEESE SAUCE, BUFFALO CHICKEN PIZZA, and CUBAN SANDWICH. SOOOOO GOOOOOD! The BEER is good too!

Google
It's been a long time since I have been at Distant Brewing. The last time I was here, they did not have food. Now they have a kitchen and a chef that know how to cook. Today was Taco Tuesday so had to go with 3 tacos for $12. Big tacos and outstanding salsa. Flavorful and spicy. Beer still great. Inside seating and outside seating. Couches and tables. Dog friendly. Heaters as well. If you are in the area and hungry and thirsty, highly recommend stopping in for quality food and beverage.

Yelp
Great beer. Amazing food. Wonderful service. Ghost west coast pilsner was delicious and nachos are a must. Was great that they had ice cream for the kiddos and the bacon mac & cheese was so good. Would love to have tried more items! Tons of seating which is great. Unfortunately we arrived hungry so missed photos.

Yelp
Beer is good, can never go wrong with that. However, if you're looking for a welcoming atmosphere with friendly service, this is not the place. We visited several venues while in town and this by far was the most underwhelming for food and service. It's a shame.

Yelp
Why is this place rated so high? The beer is just ok I got the hazy. Kinda had a weird taste. But the reason for 1 star is the pizza wtf. I've had frozen pizza way better than this. It was a floppy mess. Tasted like canned tomato sauce basically no flavor the pepperoni is cheap and low grade cheese. I can't believe they serve that. I would rate 1.5 out of 10. Not sure what's going on but they need to get out of the pizza business. Gotta be the worst pizza ever.

Yelp
A group of my friends came here for drinks and it was a fun experience. We ordered bourbon stout and my god it was so creamy and rich, had to slowly sip on it. The outdoors seating area was super cute and spacious for a large friend group. Nice service as well. Bathroom was clean too which I appreciate when I'm in public . Always a great spot to come back to when in Mammoth

Yelp
Beer was great. The pizza was just ok. We had the pepperoni pizza and a pretzel. The pretzel was good. Service was ok, but they stop serving food at 8pm, which we were not aware and barely were able to order. At the end of the meal, they really worked hard to push us out. @8:57 they played Closing Time and then at 8:58 they turned up the music so loud we could not longer talk. So we left,

Yelp
Distant Brewing is a super cool spot in Mammoth Lakes. Great beer, great food. We ordered the pretzel sticks and BLTA. The house made beer cheese was incredible. The bread on the BLTA was crazy. Never had such a soft ciabatta with such a good crust. Bacon was obviously high quality and they threw cheese on it too, a nice surprise. They obviously care about their brewing as well. The brewery is attached to the tap room and restaurant. Any time I find a barrel aged sour that is done in traditional foeder style, I have to order it. Distant did not disappoint. Their beer had a bit more wood flavor to it but still a great showing for the style. They have just about something for everyone. Light beer, dark beer, hoppy beer, and a few non-beer alcoholic options too. The space here is also rad. They seem to often have live music. When we were there on a Saturday night, it was packed even without the music. They have a few pool tables and lots of indoor and outdoor seating. I know that Distant will always be on my brewery list when in the Mammoth area from now on. Cheers!

Yelp
After a day of fishing - we stopped by Distant Brewing... my oh my ... my partner loved the beer here, it's the ideal West Coast IPA (: Was craving for mozzarella sticks and Chicken Caesar Salad - the portions are great for sharing! Relax vibe, staff is nice and lots of indoor and outdoor seating available. They have pool tables available as well. We'll definitely be back the next time we visit Mammoth!

Yelp
The beer and seltzers were good but the pizza was trash. I'm sorry but it taste like microwavable pizza and they just added the toppings. We also got steak nachos that were good. Overall the service was good but we won't ever be getting the pizza again.
google avatar

Julianne L.

Yelp
Good selection of drinks and good food options! We sampled a few beers and ordered some, as well as got the pretzels with beer cheese, which really hit the spot after a day on the slopes. It was a busy night, the pool tables were full, and luckily we got a table. The staff is friendly, but the service was slow at times when they'd be busy hugging and singing with each other lol. Must've been a particularly good and lively night when I was there!

Yelp
Stopped by for a quick beer. The staff were very helpful and gave us recommendations. I drank the pale ale Sea to Summit and it was really good. 5:00 pm on a Friday night, they're a little busy but they have plenty of seating inside as well as seating outside with heaters.

Yelp
Stopped in for some post dinner beers on a Wednesday and it was packed to the brim with people and dogs inside. The assortment of beers they offered were amazing, we found so many good brews and even filled a couple crowlers to take back home with us from this trip. The stouts were probably some of my favorites, well balanced full bodied profiles you can easily taste the elements of each flavor brewed in clearly. The cider was light and crisp. I probably should have brought a few more crowlers back but I will be back again soon!

Brittany U.

Yelp
The food and drinks were great! The service was great. Great atmosphere and ambience. Would definitely come back!

Yelp
Distant has some of the Best Beer's in Nothern California. The Food is over the Top, large Menu. The staff and Sergio are the Best they know Beer and Service

Yelp
So glad my bf suggested we stop here after some fun in the snow. Loved loved loved their hazy sky pillow. We also ordered their chicken tenders twice, it was so good! Extra bonus is they are dog friendly. It was a bit tight inside so we sat outside and they kindly turned on the heat lamp for us. Playlist was great, food and drinks were delicious, it was really nice to wind down before we headed down the mountain. This will definitely be a regular spot the next time we're in town.

Yelp
Food is great, beer is just okay, service is terrible. Please stop acting like you're doing your customers a favor by being in business. Customers keep you going. If I'm a jerk, that's one thing. If you're bothered to work with people, don't.

Yelp
Excellent!!!!! Great beer, food, and super friendly staff!!!! Had a great time with our group! Cheers!!

Lori W.

Yelp
Had pizza and salad for lunch, good quality. Beer selection was good and they had a delicious seltzer for those who are not beer fans. Our favorite brewery in town!

Yelp
Who would've thunk we'd find an establishment that not only serves up delightful craft beers but also tasty morsels all the way out in Mammoth Lakes? Distant Brewing is all that AND a bag of chips (which coincidentally is included with all sandwich orders)! It's the ideal spot to relax after hitting the slopes. I started with a custom flight including the following: 1 - Bounce to the Ounce (Hazy IPA) 2 - Peak to Peak (Pilsner) 3 - KupferBier (Vienna lager) 4 - Sure, Bert! (Sour) As you can see, Distant has a legit and wide selection of craft beers. Besides IPAs, they also offer lagers, pilsners, stouts, sours, hard kombuchas, hard seltzers and hard ciders. They have something for every beer aficionado! To eat, I ordered the B.L.A.T. and it was quite possibly the best meal I had on our trip. The sourdough was perfectly toasted and the avocado, bacon, lettuce, tomato, red onion and cheddar cheese filler tasted fresh. The meal is also served with the aforementioned bag of chips and a pickle. Brewery staff was efficient with taking and delivering orders to customers seated both inside and outside. I was sporting a Sacramento brewery's t-shirt and one of the servers recognized it so he and I chatted it up. If you find yourself in Mammoth and thirsty for beer, pop into Distant Brewing for a pour!

Yelp
After spending most of the day hiking in the local area, my husband and I came to Distant Brewing with our two dogs to enjoy the beautiful weather and the long holiday weekend. Everyone had the same idea as the patio was quite crowded with pups and people. Luckily, we managed to grab a spot in the shade and thoroughly enjoyed all of the people and pup watching. We placed our order inside for our beverages and some pretzel bites to share. I thoroughly enjoyed the huckleberry seltzer that I ordered, and my husband was a big fan of their brown ale. Of the two breweries we tried over the weekend, I enjoyed Distant Brewing a little more.

Ashley G.

Yelp
Great selection of beers and fun place to stop by. I really enjoyed the cider I ordered. Definitely recommend you stop by if you are in the area.

Yelp
Totally get the great reviews for this place! We got a flight of beer, all were really good!!! It was a not hard to figure out how things worked there, due to it being a very busy 4th for them. But, the food came out fast! Cute place, looks like they have live music at times, that would be fun!

Yelp
***Updating my review because of the managers rude responses on both of my reviews. Which yes I reviewed on multiple sites so people can make an educated decision before giving an establishment money. Rude staff, rude owner. Apparently this place has a 5 sample policy and then they offer a flight. Fine. But I had 2 samples which I didn't even finish because I didn't want a flight I wanted a full sized beer. Again standard at every brewery I've visited and worked. He also edited his response, to an even more snarky response- very flipping unprofessional. So I conveniently pasted it here for your review. Response from the owner We allow all the free tastes you want, but our policy to ask if you'd like a flight on the 5th sample. First time here in Mammoth and this was our first stop in town and decided to stop here to try the great beer selection and lunch. Based on the reviews I expected more. I asked to try 2 IPA tastes and my husband 3 because he is a bit more picky- the bartender abruptly and incredibly rudely said "you guys just want to do a flight." Suggesting that apparently trying beer at this particular brewery is frowned upon? Or maybe he was constipated and felt like being unkind- but it was really a rude welcome and we passed on lunch. And honestly an odd suggestion considering my husband and I have vastly different beer tastes and were apparent with which beer we were tasting. The NZ IPA was really delicious which is rather disappointing how off put we were literally being in the building for all but 5 minutes- we couldn't wait to leave to find food elsewhere. He ain't poo pooing on our wedding anniversary vacation or time in Mammoth. Word of advice, if you love your job and craft beer, educating your customers and letting them find something that suits them is sort of easy to do and also requires absolutely no effort. (Worked at breweries for years and trying "tastes" is pretty standard so maybe get off that little high horse.) Good beer, poor hospitality for us this time. Find somewhere else that actually wants you there

Yelp
Chorizo nachos were super tasty and went well with this refreshing gose that I ordered. Really appreciated the casual ambience, dog-friendly patio, great service and no one cared that my friend, dog and I came from paddling the lake in our gear to go have lunch and beers! If you are vegetarian, my friend really enjoyed her grilled cheese and you can add tomatoes (or avocado, probably).

Yelp
Dannnnng them Hazys are solid!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm typing more just to hit 85 characters. Nothing I can add other than HOT DAYUMMMM

Matt D.

Yelp
Awesome beers and awesome food! Food choices in Mammoth seem to be a little limited, and a lot of the businesses seem to shut down during a portion of the day, but this brewery was open consistently has some great tasting beer and a great food selection. Loved the vibes! This is definitely a spot. You need to check out if you're up in Mammoth for either the summer or the winter.

Erica B.

Yelp
Their menu says absolutely NOTHJNG about their sausage and mushroom pizza having white sauce. Really unfortunate, since I'm allergic and waited in the cold for 30 minutes to be stuck with food that I can't eat and isn't as described on theor menu. Red sauce is basically standard on pizza unless denoted on the menu. Bummer and won't be back.
google avatar

Yelp
Best beer in Mammoth! We come here at least 2-3 times during our visit. This is our favorite spot to hang out, play pool, chat with friends or listen to live music. Their staff are the best, super friendly and welcoming. They have amazing food as well, I love the chicken wraps and the pretzel, it's a perfect beer pairing. Check out their merch selection too, their products are high quality. It gets busy on the weekends so get there early!

Yelp
Cute little brewery off the main road but down by some great shops and restaurants. Friendly girls inside to help pour the beers. Crowd seemed nice with kids, families, 20 somethings and on up. We sat at the bar and met a nice guy in his 70a that retired and works 3 days a week and comes in here weekly for his pour. Locals that visit a brewery is always a sign of a great brew.
google avatar

Vala R.

Yelp
Order at counter. Food is brought to table. Food was very good. We tried a Pale Ale and an Amber. Server didn't seem to know a lot about product and didn't recommend anything when asked. Overall vibe was good. Small stage for music?

Erika A.

Yelp
Great selection of beer specially the Hazy IPA. Great ambiance and service. We'll make sure we stop by next time we're in Mammoth lakes.
google avatar

Jenn M.

Yelp
It was so nice having a meal out and not feeling like it was way too expensive for what it was. Great value, which doesn't feel so normal these days. The portions were large, the ingredients fresh and it all tasted great. My friend liked the beer he had. The counter people/servers weren't very friendly, perhaps overworked or understaffed.
google avatar

Rebecca R.

Yelp
The beer was good lots of West Coast IPA options and the food was EXCELLENT! The service was fairly quick as we went on a Friday around 4:30pm before dinner rush, and food delivery was also fairly quick. We ordered at front got a number and sat down. The beer tender questioned my friend on her weight as she lost weight and had a higher weight in her ID. That was awk.. maybe they get a lot of fake IDs? Ambiance was that of any other brewery and it wasn't very big so seating could be an issue during a rush hour. They had pool tables in back area. I love pretzels and these were delish.
google avatar

Sahiba M.

Yelp
The honeysuckle seltzer was an amazing amazing drink. Food is really good and they have some healthy options too. We took a salad and pepper hummus platter. I would love to go to this place again and again. They could improve on inside seating arrangements but it has pretty chill vibes.
google avatar

Yelp
Stopped by for a quick bite and brew and overall was a good experience! My husband got some ipa with coconut in it. It was interesting to see some of the beer flavors they had. I work in the beer world myself so it's always exciting to see what other breweries are coming up with. We also split a large Buffalo chicken flatbread. It was pretty tasty! Not much Buffalo to it but it was pretty good none the less. After we got it I went to ask for some ranch and was surprised to not be charged for ranch so that was nice. Comfortable seating out front that is also dog friendly. Most of the service was okay but there was one server who was pretty rude which was the only negative part of our experience. I had asked if there are any menus I could take outside to look at and she snapped back to just take a picture of the one on the wall. Then when my husband ordered his beer she seemed very annoyed he had questions about some of the options. We would come back though and look forward to making another stop next time we're in town!

Yelp
STEPH JUDGEMENT: A friendly brewery with good beers and food. My friend and I stopped in after a day on the slopes and we were ready for some beers and snacks! Since it was my first time here I got a flight with the following beers: Opaque (double dry hopped hazy ipa with Nelson, Mosaic, Citra hops) - refershing Basic batch (cream Ale with black velvet coffee and hazelnut) - yummy! Mountain Wookie (west coast Pale with Idaho 7 hops) - strong but mellow. Darkest Mountain (bourbon barrel aged imperial stout) - everything you'd want in such a beer. As for the food, we got the nachos minus beef, pretzels with beer cheese, and tomato basil soup, which came out very hot. Everything was delicious. They made a great impression on us and I do believe this will be in the regular rotation on future Mammoth trips.
google avatar

Steven H.

Yelp
It's a brewery so it gets five stars...they brew beer themselves for us to enjoy. Got the Nicks Sour and it was good - apricot is what came to mind, though it didn't have any. Great place to stop between my adventure !
google avatar

Spencer H.

Yelp
Awesome brewery. Delicious pizzas; solid beers; really fun screens that show big spot events. Looks like they have a stage for live music too. Service was super friendly and fast. I'd strongly recommend and will come back next time in Mammoth.
google avatar

Joyce P.

Yelp
Dropped by after a full day of boarding and beer is exactly what we needed! My husband and kids both got the honey baked amber ale it was bright and deep in flavor. We also ordered soft pretzels which was the perfect pairing and the star of the show for filling our stomachs. Happy we got here early as it began to quickly fill up! The staff were friendly and the place was well kept and lively!! Definitely would come back here again when I'm back in Mammoth.

Yelp
Great ambiance and a 'something for everyone' atmosphere makes distant brewing well worth a visit. Casual vibes and not too expensive eats is what I remember. Sit where you want, eat (and drink) what you want or even play pool (in the back) or read a book (which the guy at the table next to is was trying to do...)
google avatar

Laura A.

Yelp
Yum! Had amazing nachos and terrific pizza for a very reasonable price. Outside eating and it is packed for a reason. They did not have a single lager or pilsner...so that was disappointing. The oldest beers ought to be represented.
google avatar

Jessica S.

Yelp
This is easily the best brewery -- in terms of quality -- in the Eastern Sierra sector, but sadly not the best known. Friendly atmosphere with seating inside and out. Food menu consisted of flatbreads, sandwiches, and pub food apps. For the bier, they have a little bit of everything -- and categorized formerly as "Hoppy", "Lighter", "Darker' and "Other. You'll find a few guest taps on the board as well. I've much respect for breweries who remember the West Coast style IPA. I had just that in the form of a clean, crisp IPA during my visit. An easy sipper and not palate wrecking although I did yearn for more grassiness. They seem to rotate their hazy's and IPA/ DIPA often. At $7 a pint and situated outside to breathe in the crisp mountain air, you could say I was mighty content. Do not forget this little brewery next to the better known brewery down the street!
google avatar

Mark R.

Yelp
Went back to Distant a year later. All of the good things are still in place. They've improved their outdoor seating with couches, etc. Even better! Some new beer varieties were fun. Tried some food options (like mac and cheese) - tasty and great value! The staff is always friendly and helpful. When you add in the extraordinary setting, this is still by far my favorite brewery ever!

Shannon B.

Yelp
Great service and amazing food. Stopped on our way through town. I am gluten free and struggle to find food I can eat while traveling.

Corey B.

Yelp
Always look forward to the post-mountain distant! Great beer and food with reasonable prices.

Colleen G.

Yelp
Love this spot. Nothing beats good beer and grub post snow. Great alternative to Mammoth Brewing.

Savy J.

Yelp
Went this past Saturday and ordered the mushroom sausage pizza--it came out completely undercooked: doughy crust and raw sausage. Even chicken nuggets weren't cooked correctly, they were busy but that's not ok. I politely told the server, she took it back and returned with it burnt. No apology. I mentioned it again and she just said "ok?" and walked off. The server (a bigger girl) was super rude. Food was disappointing, but the beer was solid and the vibe was cool. Too bad the service and food ruined it. The server kept giving me dirty looks throughout the night. I'm shocked by how bad the service is and we tipped 20%, it's pre-tip so you don't know what kind of service you're getting.
google avatar

Tiffany T.

Yelp
We were here Labor Day weekend and loved the vibe. My husband loved the beer as well. They had a good variety and I enjoyed their N/A IPA. We sat at the bar in front of this beautiful mural. There are hidden gems in it if you look. The patio looked nice but not on a windy day. Service was fast and friendly. Definitely a cool spot to stop while in Mammoth. We will be back next visit.
google avatar

Jill S.

Yelp
Amazing beer! I had an Amber and my husband had Pilsner. It was about half hour walk from our hotel (Westin) We enjoyed sitting outside
google avatar

Ben H.

Yelp
Cold beer and hot food, what else do ya need? It's got fun vibes inside and outside so bring your friends and have a good time. There also a pool table tucked around back. I think their beer selection isn't too exciting but they got some variety. Food is also just okay and not really exciting either. So many just stick to some snacks while you drink. Food: 5/10 Service: 6/10 Vibes: 8/10 Value: 6/10
