Where to Eat in Wheaton, Maryland | Eater DC

"This bar and restaurant is an upscale dining option with craft cocktails, local Maryland beer, and house made dishes that lean local including Chesapeake oysters and seared scallops. The colorful dining room and cozy nooks make this a great date night option too." - Tim Ebner

District Bistro has excellent food and service. I highly recommend the burrata salad and any dish with the fresh pasta. Service was quick and friendly. I've been twice and plan to go again.

I don't even know where to begin! My friend and I loved it. We went tonight at 5:30 feeling quite like two old ladies who usually go for the early bird specials...but we're not. Actually, we're quite rather sophisticated diners and District Bistro did not disappoint. While they say it's American food, it goes well beyond that with food tastes adopted and loved by the diverse palates found in America. I tried to categorize it as this cuisine or that cuisine and finally just settled on 'great cuisine.' The wine selection was good and we both found what we liked. The cocktails looked delicious but we stuck with wine. We'll try those another time. We shared the pistachio dukka with harissa - delicious - and I had the shawarma bowl. Must say, it was better than any similar bowl I've had. I did add extra harissa to it just because I like a bit more spice but the flavors were fine without that. My friend had the pappardelle with wild mushrooms and other combinations of flavors that did not disappoint. This being a Tuesday night we wondered how many customers they would get (yes, we were there ridiculously early and the only diners for about an hour!) but by the time we left other diners were coming steadily in. I will be back next week with my husband and District Bistro will go into our regular rotation for when we're in town. How wonderful to have this gem in Wheaton!

Google
Sophisticated food at a fair price. The drinks were made perfectly. The space feels so welcoming and appropriate for any event: family dinner, date night, brunch with your girls, or a friends get together. I will definitely be returning and trying everything on the menu.

Met a friend I hadn’t seen in awhile, enjoyed sitting in the cute alcove. Not rushed at all through our meal and we ended up being the last to leave.Wonderful service. We both enjoyed the Wahoo (fish) - delicious. This place always does everything so well. The server noticed we left an umbrella and ran out to catch us - very thoughtful.

Google
A cute hidden gem of a restaurant in the middle of Wheaton. The food is super tasty and they have something for everyone. Also a nice wine selection. The service was attentive and very friendly. The atmosphere is casual with a cute little couch corner to enjoy a drink. We recommend this place.

Google
We made same day reservations for a Friday. There was a momentary issue with the seating but it was quickly resolved. The A/C was a bit too strong considering it wasn't a hot day. Our server was friendly and helpful despite how busy the restaurant was that night. Crab cake fritters: Crunchy and a decent portion but slightly overcooked. The sauce and lemon elevated the flavor. 4/5 Charcuterie board: 3.5/5 Seafood gumbo: Very flavorful with a decent bit of spice. 4/5 Sea scallops w/ kale lentils tomato: The scallops were perfectly cooked. However, the flavor of the kale and lentils accompanying the dish just wasn't there. Sadly, it turns out that raw peas are lost on me. But again, the scallops themselves were great. 3.5/5 Lamb Bolognese: The dish was creamy but not excessively. The lamb was a little gamey but we didn't mind it. The doneness of the pasta was just right. 4/5 Chocolate bread pudding: We ordered both desserts (bread pudding and creme brulee) and waited a while to be told that they had run out of the latter. However, the bread pudding with ice cream was delicious! 4.5/5 I enjoyed my meal and I plan on returning to try out more dishes.

OMG!!! My wife and I ate at this new (November 2023) restaurant in Wheaton (across from the triangle) tonight for dinner. Blown away!!!! I have not enjoyed a meal this much in a very long time. I encourage everyone to enjoy it often! The decor is lovely. The wait staff was super friendly and efficient. Wife’s drink was delightful. And that was before the food even came. We started with a cheese and charcuterie board. We eat them a lot. This is the best I have had. Period. Full stop. Not just the cheese and meat but the accompaniments we perhaps even better. And the crostini were both abundant and perfectly prepared. I ordered the homemade fettuccine with mushrooms and my wife had the lamb bolognese pasta with homemade pasta. The fettuccine was beyond words. And then I tasted hers and the flavors were the best pasta I can remember in a long time. Portions were perfect size and not enormous. I should have stopped but I had to have dessert. A creme brûlée with with pistachios on top and some sort of little fruit. We didn’t get a picture before digging in but you can see the progress. Fabulous flavor combinations. Only down side is that there were not many dinners. Perhaps because it is Friday of a long weekend and we came on the early side. But we understand business has been slower than they would like. Everyone in Wheaton/Silver Spring/Kensington must try them and then keep coming back. This is a gem that must remain here for years to come.

Google
Dinner and drinks were excellent. Both of our entrees and appetizers were delicious and beautifully plated. Pictured is the frisee and apple salad, and the lamb bolognese. We're so excited to have such a nice sit-down restaurant with great food in the neighborhood. We will be back!

Yelp
Great family-run restaurant, a hidden gem! Delicious food and friendly service. The owner/chef was trained in high-end restaurants, and the menu is a wonderful, creative blend of cuisines.

Yelp
Food could be considered gourmet by some. Not by me. Boards in restaurant show crab gumbo special and seafood special dinner. Sorry out of both...then erase the boards. We got crab beignets and fried tomatoes for appertizer. They were decent but very light. The short ribs were good; I only tasted it. The lamb Bolognese was very light in lamb. I had the seafood stew. They should have called it mussel stew. Tons of mussels, 1 shrimp, 1 scallop and a little piece of mystery fish. Also had very little stew and a small piece of bread with pesto. I was still hungry. It need something else with it. Our hostess/waitress/bartender said she could make any drink. She never heard of Mayland orange crush; said she had no crushed ice; it doesn't need it. Had no 151 rum for a zombie, no sour mix for amaretto sour. She had to google them. Never heard of ice in water. Chef is from Nicaragua which doesn't fit the menu they are delivering. She said the short ribs are how he makes it for his boys. She also said to not look at online reviews because the style changes. The restaurant was light on Customers as well. I had to hound her to get our check socwe could leave. She stopped at our table too many times early on but forgot about us since it was after 830 and they close at 9. Overall food was good, but portions were small and drink prices high. They also share restrooms and some food with next door burger chain. Same owner.

Yelp
Joined a few friends for brunch. Not a lot of patrons were in the restaurant on the day we visited (just a few). I tried looking at the pictures before visiting this place, but there was not a lot to see, for brunch selections. I got one of the salad bowls. On the brunch menu, it is listed as Shawarma Chicken Bowl, and it comes with warm rice, tomatoes, feta, cucumber, red onions, tzatziki, lemon-tahini dressing, and crispy pita. I was informed that the pita is made in-house. The pita was very large in size and very warm. It was very good, so was the chicken, the sauce and everything in the dish. The only thing I didn't mess with too much were the red onions and some of the tomatoes, but I would certainly get that dish again. The portions of everything in the dish went well together. For dessert, they mentioned just 2 options: Crème Brûlée and Chocolate Bread Pudding with Ice Cream. I went with the latter. The Chocolate Bread Pudding is a nice size, and you get one scoop of vanilla ice cream on top with the whole dessert drizzled in what looks like caramel sauce. Not too heavy and not too light, but perfectly right in between. I was able to cut the pieces of the bread pudding with my spoon and it paired well with the ice cream - very tasty.

Yelp
Cool and relaxing decor, delicious food, fabulous music, and great service all in one place....yes, District Bistro is putting the Grand back in Grandview Avenue. A huge shout out to my good friend, Toya J., who suggested we try District Bistro. She picked a winner. Thank you, Toya! The restaurant is decorated in a beautiful Baja blue with dark woods, comfortable booths, a lovely bar area. They have this stunning room off to the right which is just gorgeous. We ordered the Bistro Burger and the croque monsieur. The burger was delicious and cooked perfectly. The one thing I would change is the cheese. They serve it with blue cheese and I would have liked a cheese with a little less funk. The bun to meat ratio was ideal and the bun tasted great. The fries were crispy and crunchy. Hot out of the frier I could not stop eating them. They come with a garlic aioli that was excellent. In reading the reviews, like any good Yelper would, I read that one reviewer said the croque monsieur was the best they ever had. I want to second that. This sandwich had the perfect ratio of cheese to meat. The cheese pull was ridiculous and the pickle created a nice crunch factor. Our waiter, who was very good recommended a wine to us that was refreshing and delightful. The smooth jazz was a nice background music. We decided that we are definitely coming back and took a look at the happy hour menu. Thank you to chef Pedro for his delicious food. Thank you to Toya for choosing this place.

Yelp
District Bistro is good in my book! Best discovery since Full On. The street parking is easy. As soon as Joy B and I walked in we felt the vibe; the music was mellow, the décor was a sort of English Country vintage with toile wallpaper, velvet chairs in this sitting room, and postmodern lighting. They played Cleo Soul's the Gold album the entire time and immediately I was relaxed. The food was delicious, we shared half sandwiches such as the Cubano, complete with slow roasted pork and good quality ham on panini with grain mustard. I would definitely order this again. The fries were perfect! The burger was medium well with bacon, blue cheese, and caramelized onions. Very enjoyable. Wine selection was exciting, we had green wine, a Vinho Verde from Portugal, fresh fruit apple/ pineapple finish with a little effervescence, but it wasn't sweet! Our waiter was kind and attentive, definitely knew how to fall back at just the right moments when he saw how deep we were in conversation. Let me tell you, that alone is an art. District Bistro knows how to create a vibe & a good meal, thanks to a phenominal dining partner (Joy B.), and this simple yet elegant atmosphere. We will be back for calamari, oysters on the shell, and the soy honey riblets. Officially in luv!

Yelp
The food was delicious. The chef knows his way around spices! The service was over the top!

Yelp
I've been to District Bistro twice with my husband. Didn't need a reservation either time, as the restaurant was mostly empty both times. They have comfortable old school booths or tables & chairs. Drinks, appetizers, and entrees can run up a +$100 check. It's in the Wheaton triangle, so there's metered parking. Also it's within a short walking distance from the Wheaton metro. The menu changed from our first visit, so it's good to see that they do change it up according to what's in season. I like how creative the menu gets a bit...who ever had yellow lentil hummus before?? I loved it! My chicken was a bit salty though. I got the warm grains bowl as well, which is practically an entree, but good for leftovers and to get in some more vegetables. I appreciated that the dressing came on the side. The restaurant space shares bathrooms in a connecting hallway with Frank's Burgers next door (same owner). If you live in the area, check out District Bistro!

Yelp
Absolutely great service and food! This was my first experience here with my mom and it was great! I highly recommend this restaurant and definitely don't leave without trying the chocolate bread pudding. The wait staff are amazing.

steve t.

Yelp
The decor was inviting and our booth was very comfortable. The food was excellent...we had the short rib and the lamb bolognese which showed off with homemade pappardelle. The chocolate bread pudding was a fantastic finisher. Shout out to the staff, too, especially the lovely young woman who waited on us. We didn't catch her name but she was delightful and had a great head of hair!

Yelp
If you are looking for a chef inspired dinner with a nice glass of wine or a cocktail, District bistro is your place. My sister and I dined here on a Saturday night. There wasn't a big crowd until a little after 6 PM. The restaurants ambience is casual, and the wait staff very friendly, carefully explaining the various specials of the day. My sister ordered the salmon which was delicious, I chose the potato gnocchi and it was very filling and wonderfully flavored. It's nice to experience chef inspired dinner in downtown Wheaton! Come out and support this local gem!
google avatar

Ingrid N.

Yelp
The bartender was on point with the delish French 75 cocktail. Staff was friendly and food arrived promptly. Beets for the appetizer was shared between 2 of us, yum! We ate that before a picture could be taken. My friend had the salmon entree and I had the Mediterranean seafood stew. Beautiful presentation and also delish.. Now, what's the deal with no napkins? None of the tables were set and utensils came out after food. When I realized we didn't have napkins I asked, and was given paper napkins resembling McD. Maybe they just used the ones from fast food sister restaurant ( Franks burgers) next door. And the soup while delicious was in a very wide large bowl which allowed for it to get cold too quickly. Next time I'll ask for food to be extra hot. With just a couple adjustments, it will be perfect! I will go back soon.

Yelp
A Place for Foodies in Silver Spring: District Bistro is the type of suburban gem that everyone talks about in the DMV. Much thought and consideration have gone into every element from the cuisine to the ambiance. For starters, the crawfish gumbo tasted just as good as any nook in the Crescent City, while the perfectly fried green tomatoes had multiple sauces to go with it. Nugget's seared sea scallops were also cooked to perfection and in the process we learned about the caperberry. Finally, Belv's roasted duck moulard was the dish of the night accompanied by so many different flavors with the cranberry chutney to the au gratin sweet potatoes. To top it all off, our server was fun and friendly. We highly recommend for date night or when a foodie friend is in from out of town, but the brunch looks fun, too. They also encouraged us to return with the kids touting their children's menu. We may not take them up on that last idea, but the lack of pretention was refreshing.

Karl J.

Yelp
Delicious food, friendly service, calm, ambience with comfortable sound for conversation! Will definitely return !!

Yelp
I like this place! Easy-going, nice menu, pleasant to be there. This is a fine place to come with friends, stay awhile and talk a lot!

Yelp
Service was pretty good 7/10. It felt like the staff could be more familiar with the menu. My meal was excellent 8/10. Also I would love to see non alcoholic cocktails offered. Ambiance felt lacking. 5/10. Definitely not the hip scene and some of the poor construction details were noticeable. Our table was wonky to the point of distraction. I do appreciate the comfortable booths, nice finishes and the plants at each table. Not sure if I will go back to be honest. As a side, I think it's great they decided to locate an American fine dining slot in downtown Wheaton. I hope there will be more fine dining options in the area in the future.

Beth H.

Yelp
Great food. Enjoyed calamari and salmon burger. But it took extra effort to get service attention. Would be great to increase staffing.

Yelp
Visited for the first time this evening, a quiet Tuesday night. We were warmly welcomed and experienced gracious service throughout. I think Pedro Matamoros is an outstanding chef and I am grateful that he seems to believe in the eastern part of Montgomery County as evidenced by his previous (now closed) restaurants - Nicaro and 8407 Kitchen Bar. The eastern part of Montgomery County is often overlooked by upscale businesses and politicians both. Those were sad days when those places closed. I always wondered if we'd ever get to experience his food again. Luckily, I found out about Franks Burger Place a year ago and when they recently moved, I discovered District Bistro opened and was owned by Chef Pedro. We need more places like this in this section of the county. One look at the menu after having a great burger at Frank's, I knew I had to come back to try this place and today was the day. I was not disappointed. As mentioned, the service provided was excellent (by Pedro's son no less) and the things we had were all just excellent. The duck confit was truly outstanding. I devoured the entire dish. My friend loved his fish and chips and be both enjoyed the lentil and garbanzo bean soup. The Caesar salad was unique with mainly kale and a few slices of anchovies on top. I felt like it was different than I was anticipating (in haste I may have glossed over a description of the salad being kale) but enjoyed it nonetheless, plus it was healthier. A side note on the salad - The croutons on the salad were pretty darn good. It was hard not to eat them even if you're trying to avoid carbs. On that note about avoiding carbs, we chose not to be even tempted by looking at a dessert list. Maybe one day though I will splurge and am confident that it will be excellent, just like the entire experience I had here. I am looking forward to my next visit and it will be soon. Thank you District Bistro. I am rooting for your success. Note to Yelp Elites - y'all need to come here and try the food and drink and post a review!

Robert H.

Yelp
We both had the asparagus soup, the roasted beet salad with burrata, my wife ordered the chicken marsala with polenta, i ordered their fresh made pappardelle with additional fresh wild cut salmon. Finished with the warm apple & peaches crisp withe ice cream. Excellent chef, we can tell he is got many years in kitchen. Very low prices. Award Winning. Family own an operated. Great ambiance soft music and 5 service.

Yelp
I have been here twice and really enjoyed the food both times. I got take-out for my father's birthday the first time and the seared sea scallops were a winner, along with the clam chowder. We liked it so much we came back for brunch on the weekend and were delighted by the seasonal specials: a fried tomato and pimento cheese appetizer and an heirloom tomato salad. The fried chicken and waffles was delicious. They have a nice selection of beers on tap as well as a good wine selection and thoughtful cocktail list. Ambience is classy without looking pretentious. There is a cute little nook with a couch and a chessboard where I could imagine sipping a drink. The server was attentive and offered to bring the kids' food out first, which was appreciated. We will definitely be back.

Yelp
Food: I enjoyed the crab chowder soup and the lobster coquettes. The calamari had good flavor but it had a strange aftertaste that made it inedible. Also the fried coating was falling off the calamari so it made it difficult to dip it in the sauce without all the pieces coming off. My partner got the ribeye steak and he enjoyed it. However, the lamb bolognese tasted like Chef Boyardee, I left half of the food on the plate and left feeling unsatisfied. Service: the service was great. We were easily seated and given enough time to browse the menu. They first brought out our appetizers and then the entree which is much appreciated. Ambiance: relaxing atmosphere with really nice decor inside. I felt comfortable being there.

Frances C.

Yelp
Food and drink menu is superb. Wait staff very friendly & efficient. Atmosphere is excellent and great place to converse while totally enjoying the best dinner in the area. Also-great intimate side room to enjoy one of their specialty cocktails (complete w/ chess board) while relaxing in a comfortable 'living room' setting. Try their Pomegranate'Fall in the Sun' cocktail-Id go there just for that spirit lifting cocktail (orchid flower adds an extra charm).

Christian G.

Yelp
Hidden gem! The first time I took my wife, she had the lamb bolognese and I just had to take a bite of that! It was delicious. I had the chicken... AMAZING! We decided to make this place our date night and get a different item every time. We got the tuna tartare and every bite was worth it.

Grace H.

Yelp
Roasted beet salad was delicious. Flavorful and though listed as a small plate, a generous serving of delicate roasted beets. The dressing is a marriage of sweet and savory. The fresh lettuce and pistachios compliment the beets and give a nice contrast of texture. Also, we enjoyed the brunch gumbo and Eggs Benedict with avocado. Service and ambience delightful on this Sunday morning.

Yelp
A wonderful neighborhood restaurant with a good limited menu. I would definitely go back.

Yelp
Perfect for a birthday lunch! The food was outstanding. The cubano sandwich was the best I've ever had. Nice setting with lots going on outside on a Saturday afternoon. I highly recommend.

Yelp
Tried what turns out to be a great choice for dinner prior to a movie in Wheaton. Friendly, quick service. Enjoyed the evening's specials: Thai squash soup and the Fluke.

Yelp
Service was great, food was fantastic. Oysters, Lamb Bolognese, and Chocolate Bread Pudding. So good and right down the street.

Yelp
This restaurant made me reinstall my yelp app to give them a 5 star review. Their food, service and decor are all 5 stars in my book. I have tried probably 70% of the menu now and everything is delicious, one of the best Caesar salads I've ever had. And their gumbo rivals anything in New Orleans. Their Bosc pear salad was a real eye opener and maybe the best salad I've ever had in my life. I cannot recommend this spot more, please give it a try!

Nancy S.

Yelp
Delicious! Absolutely delicious short ribs. Can't say enough. Service was good too. And it is quiet in there. Wonderful experience.
google avatar

Christie S.

Yelp
This is difficult to write- the food was good. Caesar salad very good, salmon cooked to perfection. I don't think it was outstanding but compared to what else is available in the area, this restaurant and its menu is greatly needed. My problem is that there is ZERO toilet paper in the bathroom. It's totally unacceptable. I was there during a very non busy lunch. It was quiet. The fact staff didn't look at bathroom supplies the night before or at closing or in the morning or before opening is shocking to me.
google avatar

D B.

Yelp
Fantastic everything -the food, the ambience and the service. It won't disappoint. Also reasonably priced.

Yelp
Had brunch here today and it was delicious. The fried green tomatoes were impeccable, and I'm from the Deep South so I know whereof I speak. Our table also shared the tuna tartar taquitos and they are excellent as well. I had the eggs Benedict with smoke salmon and salad and again delicious. My table mates had the brisket hash with sour Kraut and Swiss cheese. The flavor of this dish is best experienced if each bite has all components of the dish. Service was great! I've also had Franks burgers (via Uber Eats) several times and they are also incredible. Everything Snr. Matamoros does is spot on from his days at The Tabard Inn, Matamoros in Wheaton, 8407 Kitchen and now Franks Burgers & District Bistro the hits just keep coming!! Looking forward to working my way thru this menu and can't wait to try the lamb bolognese, an old favorite of mine from 8407 Kitchen.

Yelp
Stopped in for a late lunch and everything was amazing. Much thanks to the Chef that special made my mother's meal due to her swallowing inability. They went above and beyond! My grain bowl was out of this world too

Yelp
Delicious and very friendly service! The ribeye, potatoes dauphinois, and mussels were great! Will return!

The food was wonderful. We ordered Seafood chowder, calamari, Lamb Bolognese. I highly recommend these.

Yelp
This is my new favorite restaurant in Wheaton. Delicious food- we had the Salmon burger and Cubano sandwich, The fries were fresh cut and excellent. They came with a house made aioli sauce that was very tasty, Portions were on the large side. Will go again.

Marilyn F.

Yelp
Stopped in for lunch. We ordered hamburger, salmon burger and chipotle salad. Appetizer was the calamari. Food was average at best. Perhaps wrong day, different menu, might be better but not today.

Mark W.

Yelp
Over priced for a neighborhood place. Menu is misleading. We were promised a salad with the entre but got nothing but a bit of garnish. The waiter did nothing to fix the situation. Ambiance is good.

Gwen S.

Yelp
The Wash. Post food critic raves about this restaurant. I disagree. We had dinner last evening and were not impressed. The calamari was fine. The beef sliders were dry, tasteless patties as was the beef hamburger. The fries were cold and instead of bringing freshly made fries, the inexperienced waiter took the cold fries back to the kitchen. After a while, he returned with fresh warm fries. Reheated or fresh?? We only tried a few. Overall, the menu is limited and the restaurant was almost empty. Hardly one of the DMV best restaurant.

Michael T.

Yelp
We live nearby but just discovered District Bistro and had dinner there for the first time tonight. We loved it. So many creative choices on the menu! The rockfish with mashed potatoes was superb, as was the salmon burger with dill and avocado. The fries were fabulous! Just the right amount of crispiness. The service was cordial, helpful, and friendly. The vibe of the place is modern and nicely chill. We'll go back for sure! MIKE TAYLOR

Yelp
Wonderful addition to Wheaton dining. We loved this chef when he cooked at 8407 and delighted he's opened this place. Everything was great. The Duck with black lentils was fabulous. Our server was terrific and this was a great find.

Yelp
The service was great and the food was delicious. I went back to celebrate my birthday with 12 friends.

Yelp
Wonderful place for a delicious lunch. Very comfortable room, inviting atmosphere and fantastic food. We'll be back for happy hour and dinner!

Kevin D.

Yelp
Went to District Bistro tonight for dinner and really enjoyed it. The cheese/charcuterie appetizer was pretty generous for the price and very tasty with a nice variety of accoutrements. I got the pork schnitzel, which itself was really excellent though better than some of the other things on the plate. Everything was tasty, but the schnitzel was pretty perfect and the rest was just very good. The bosc pear and frisée salad was another standout, and the duck entree was excellent. We also tried the creme brulee and the chocolate bread pudding as well and both were excellent. I'm very picky about bread pudding, and I personally prefer it without chocolate, but it was still a very good bread pudding and I'd happily order it again for that reason. Our server was also very thoughtful and attentive and helpful in navigating the menu. Looking forward to returning and trying some of the other items on the menu.

E W.

Yelp
Went here for dinner and the food was great! Everything was fresh, flavorful and good size portions. I had the mediterranean fish stew and my husband had the tuna taquitos and wild mushroom toast. The atmosphere was casual and comfortable and the service was good.

Lorraine S.

Yelp
Disappointing first visit. They ran out of the special, so ordered the chicken instead. We were told it would take a while to cook and it would not be ready at the same time as the other food. We understood. All of food arrived together, but the chicken was undercooked and had to go back, and the other items were not hot. The chicken was very tasty when it finally reappeared. Staff could have been more attentive, especially considering it was not crowded on a weeknight. The website menu showed Branzino which is one reason we decided to go, but it was no longer available. We really wanted to like this restaurant, especially considering it's very favorable reviews, but were disappointed.

T B.

Yelp
EXCELLENT FOOD!! A hidden gem! Great drinks and great service! I will definitely be returning.
