Best Places to Dine in NoMa and Around Union Market | Eater DC

"This small Peruvian chicken shop is packing big flavor, with casual orders of quarter, half, and whole chickens that are covered in cumin and other earthy spices before being roasted in rotisserie ovens. The juicy poultry is the main draw for an easy dinner or quick lunch, but the sides of yucca fries, Peruvian fried rice, plantains, and black beans are also delicious. Carefully choose the sauces to accompany your meal, with the classic aji verde, salsa rosado, and aji Amarillo all being made from peppers that vary in heat, with the green sauce being the spiciest and the pink being the most mild. The chicken recipe comes from the Sanchez family, who originally hail from Lima and operate Peruvian chicken spots under different names throughout the DMV. District Rico has a sister location in nearby Brentwood as well." - Emily Venezky

To all my Charlotte folks… think Viva Chicken. My only real gripe? They dared to toss a bag of whole baby carrots into the Brussels sprouts. Come on—chop those things up! 🥳 That aside, the Brussels sprouts themselves had great flavor. The balsamic glaze really popped, adding a tangy sweetness that paired well with the earthy sprouts. I do wish they had been roasted a bit longer, though—they were still a little too firm for my taste. The plantains, on the other hand, stole the show. Beautifully charred and caramelized on the outside, while staying soft, warm, and perfectly sweet on the inside. And then there’s the chicken—the heart of the meal. The Peruvian seasoning came through nicely, especially on the breast, which stayed tender (though it felt like it was about three minutes shy of tipping into dryness). The thigh and leg, however, were spot on: juicy, flavorful, and cooked just right. Overall, definitely worth a stop if you’re craving those bold, comforting Peruvian flavors.

Loved this spot! The food was delicious and affordable, and the service was awesome: super nice crew with a chill vibe. Ordered the beef saltado and it was amazing! Highly recommend because this was like a unique version of loaded fries.

Highly recommend stopping by here. Not only were the portion sizes truly ridiculous (I watched the server lay spoon after spoon of BOTH sides in my container until the box barely closed), but the service was incredibly fast and the food all tasted great. I got the dark 1/4 chicken, and it had so much flavor in every bite, skin or no skin. I'll definitely be coming back to try some of their other meals.

Google
Amazing dark meat chicken. Flavor in every piece, not just the surface. Plantains were awesome. Mac N cheese was good but nothing special, in my opinion. Plantains would be an always side, and I'll need to explore the other sides when I return. Super quick service too!

Google
I LOVE the food at District Rico - the food is very high quality for price and packed full of flavor. I LIVE for the mac n cheese here - there’s something in it that’s so creamy and has a flavor other than cheese. They have rotating sides though so be aware it’s only on certain days. I really enjoy the brussel sprouts and carrots with the glaze. I also get the yucca and plantains. The rice is also tasty. I don’t eat chicken but my husband enjoyed the half chicken and the yellow side sauce was fabulous. I think the prices are very reasonable for a filling meal as I always leave so full and happy.

We tried District Rico today for lunch and had it delivered by Uber Eats. The delivery was timely, and the driver was friendly. For lunch, we ordered the Nazca sub and the Carne Asada skewers meal. The Nazca sub was done really well. Plenty of meat, cheese, peppers, and onions. The roll it was was on held up fine enough, and it came with a house dressing already on it, which itself was also delicious. The Carne Asada skewers were amazing!!! Well seasoned with a good char from the grill and cooked perfectly slightly below medium. The two sides were the fried rice, which had unbelievable flavor and fries, which your typical steak fries, and they did their job. My only knock was the two sauces you get were very small in portion to small for the amount of meat you get. All in all, it was a great lunch from District Rico, and I definitely recommend giving them a shot!

Google
Fantastic food at a fantastic price. The fried rice was excellent, and the chicken was cooked to perfection. The workers there were also very friendly and offered great service. Excellent choice!

Google
This was the first place we ate when we started the trip and it just set the tone because the chicken is no joke. The marinade wasn’t just skin deep, every piece of the meat was saturated with flavor. Not only that, but the meat also was tender af. One of my favorite places for chicken now.The Mac and cheese came in at a close second, perfectly cheesy. Personally, the lomo saltado was not my favorite as it was not as flavorful as other lomo saltado I’ve had. I would definitely go back and get the chicken plate.

Yelp
Had a strong craving for Peruvian food! I really wanted Sardi's but unfortunately, there aren't any in DC near me so I did a quick Yelp service to learn that District Rico is close by and has good reviews. I went with the quarter white meat chicken, fried rice, plantains, and Brussels sprouts & carrots. Only problem was there were no carrots. Not sure if they missed all the carrots when putting mine into the container or if they ran out, but I was looking forward to them. In terms of location, there isn't much over there since Walmart closed so it's easy to miss the spot. I likely wouldn't eat in there unless I had to as there's a lot of "riff raff" around but it wasn't dirty inside which helps.

Yelp
I just finished their half chicken with fried rice and yuca. Even though the DoorDash took 20mins to get to my location, the food's temperature was still great for consumption. The chicken was juicy and delicious! The yuca was slightly drier than its competitors. But, the yuca was still good. The fried rice is average. I think the fried rice was slightly too salty. Overall, the half chicken combo was enjoyable.

Yelp
This was my second time eating from this restaurant. I first visited this place in March of 2024 but chose to dine in during lunch time. The place get's pretty busy but gets your order made quickly. The staff is friendly but has room to improve. The dine in area is simple and typical to any fast food chain restaurant. If you're expecting a fancy place to dine, this isn't your place but don't let it discourage you from eating here. It's not all about the fine dining atmospheres. They keep the area clean and restrict access to the restrooms to only their customers by using a cypher lock. Their food is very tasty and unique. I couldn't believe how much flavor was packed into these simple items. Their dipping sauces add a fantastic flavor to the meal. During my Washington DC trip in June of 2024, I decided to do take out. Everything was made freshly and packaged nicely. They even included utensils, even though I forgot to ask. This was very helpful, especially when most of the meal required them to enjoy. This restaurant has made my list of 'must have' spots to eat from in DC. It's location is a bit from the typical downtown [tourist] areas from DC. It can be a bit rough during the evening/night hours but still safe if you know your way around. Stop on in and give them a try!

Yelp
I love this place, the food is amazing and Anna was a great help never rushing me even though there was a line.

Yelp
Absolutely OUTSTANDING. The chicken is some of the most tender and flavorful roast chicken out there and the sauces really take it up to another level. They are also very generous with the sides and the plantains and the yuca fries were both outstanding. The rice and the curried greens and potatoes were okayish. Massive portions, very reasonably prices, extremely friendly and fast service, clean and fun interiors and outstanding chicken. Strongly recommended if you're in DC.

Yelp
My husband is craving Peruvian food and because it's his bday week, I want to find a really authentic tasting grilled chicken and thanks to Yelpers, we found this restaurant called District Rico. This amazing restaurant is near a parking garage and they happen to also have an available street parking we found. The place is clean and homey. The two guys were so nice and helpful. They really help us choose the best with a smile. So we got the family meal of authentic Peruvian grilled chicken and 4 sides. They have a lot of side selection. We choose sweet fried plantain, fried yuka, black beans and brussel sprouts. We also got the delicious carne asado with two sides. We got the delicious brown rice and another plantain. My husband loved it and we all enjoyed every thing. The chicken is so well spiced and the flavor are just plain delicious. The meat so soft and moist. All the sides are excellent! To top it off, we got the tres leches. Yum! Yum! Yum! Thank you so much District Rico. We so enjoyed our experience.

Yelp
Food was awesome. Customer service was great. I would recommend to anyone. Sub was large with plenty of fries.

Yelp
I had never heard of this place. I was doing errands nearby and visited for the first time, and I rate it five stars for their absolutely fantastic quality food! There was no wait in line. The service was friendly and upbeat. You order Chipotle style, picking your main and sides and then pay at the end. I ordered white meat (chicken breast) and two sides; mac and cheese and yucca, and all were incredibly fresh and tasty. The chicken was on the bone and piping hot. The green and white sauces significantly enhanced the flavor of the chicken. There is plenty of single window seats and tables. The interior including the restroom was clean and well lit. I would definitely come back if I were in the area.

Yelp
This place was AMAZING! It's hard to find a place where the peruvian chicken hits right and this place def did! The service was great and it felt like a Chiptole type of service, but the Peruvian way. I randomly found this place as I was out of luck with other Peruvian resturants in other locations, but I was so happy to see a Peruvian restaurant close to my hotel. It was a walk away and there were lots of seating. The chicken was delicious and enojoyed the variety of sides like brussel sprouts, fries, and more. Def recommend this place and its really close to Georgetown Law School.

Yelp
Enjoyed the chicken very much- got the quarter chicken and it was still tons of food. All sauces were great and I had the tasty chickpeas and plantains as a side .

Yelp
the day I grow out of my chicken phase, is the die I reinvent myself, but until then it's district Rico 4life - let's just take a moment here, this was a $15 meal and I got 1/4 of a chicken with two sides - if you're not getting the steamed vegetables, you're on crack. these are incredible, slightly sweet and caramelized with a bit of a char flavor yet still so tender - the chicken is so flavorful, no dry bites even on the thick chicken breast. it's heavily seasoned and moist beyond beneath. I am curious how good of a deal the larger portions are - onion salad is a fresh good option but I'm telling you go double steamed veggies
google avatar

Lakchmy O.

Yelp
Dios is amazingly delicious and fresh. The chicken will melt in your mouth. We were welcomed and the menu was explained to us. Plenty of space, great AC, very clean.

Yelp
Visited this outstanding place on our winter trip to DC. The roasted chicken had amazing flavor! The chicken burrito was packed with chicken and full of flavor. We are here for a week and we'll come back for sure!
google avatar

Yelp
This place has everything: Great flavor, big portions, affordable prices, a pile of yuca fries for $0.99... Actually though District Rico is awesome. I ordered the chipotle shrimp burrito and was shocked how good it was for under $11. The shrimp were delicious and not overcooked, the rice and beans were tasty as well, and the yuca fries, only $0.99 extra, were crisp and perfectly salted. I can eat a lot, but I still had to take some leftovers home. I was actually only visiting DC for a week but I went back for lunch a second time because it was such a positive experience. The second time, I got a veggie burrito. It was similarly good and filling, with a nice blend of grilled peppers and onions plus guac. I would probably recommend the shrimp burrito more bc those shrimp were so good.
google avatar

Kanisha L.

Yelp
Ordered the shrimp skewers with veggies (Brussel sprouts and carrots) with fried rice. The shrimp and veggies were absolutely scrumptious- I need to figure out how to not overcook my shrimp and make Brussel sprouts taste this good! I could have done without the fried rice, maybe just white rice and beans next time. Would definitely order lunch takeout from here again.

Yelp
Food was amazing!!! Price is great. Staff is friendly. We see this place on the way to our hotel and wanted to try it. Glad we did!!!

Yelp
Great place for a quick bite! The chicken was so flavorful and cooked perfectly. Great customer service, helpful and friendly. Good prices with good portions. The green jalapeño salsa is soooo good! The Brussels and carrots are so good but not very healthy because they're fried.
google avatar

Sarah Y.

Yelp
Got a family meal and shared a whole chicken with 4 sides (2 yuca, pasta salad, fried rice). It was super cheap and delicious
google avatar

Andy H.

Yelp
I ordered the chipotle shrimp burrito and the pollo saltado when I stayed at a nearby Hilton, and they were amazing. The only negative was that they took a little longer to make than I expected.
google avatar

Charlotte F.

Yelp
This place is a counter order and then sit down and eat (like chipotle), so it's great if you're alone and don't want to go to a regular sit down restaurant. I went around 1:30pm and a Saturday and it was surprisingly pretty empty. The restaurant is cute and I liked the music. Now for the food: I got the 1/4 chicken dark meat with the fried plantains and chickpeas as sides. I also got the mild sauce. It was really good! The chicken was juicy and super flavorful. It went really well with the sauce (which was creamy/mayo-y). The chickpeas were amazing. They came in this soup container and they were so flavorful. The plantains were also good and they gave me a ton! The employees were very nice. I'm definitely coming here again.

Yelp
District Rico is a rare treat in this vicinity that provides high quality food that is not exorbitantly priced. For less than $15, you can get a half chicken and two medium sides; for $27, you can get a whole chicken and two large sides. This deal is excellent, as is the quality of the meal. Picked up lunch and brought the meal home using the easy-to-use website. When we picked up, the employees offered extra sauces at no additional charge. The meal was ready within 15 minutes after ordering and all the items were super hot when we brought them home. The chicken smells amazing and we were so excited to get started when we got back home. When we opened it up, it was hot, flavorful, juicy, and meaty; this is one of best Peruvian style roast chickens I've ever had. The yuca fries are amazing; crispy and crunchy but thick and soft on the inside. The onion salad is essentially pickled onions and tomato with some pineapple for flavor and was the ideal contrast to the rest of the meal. The sauces are also incredible; the mayo based sauces are both very tasty and the green sauce is exceptional. Spicy and fresh, this elevated the meal perfectly. Look forward to returning here soon!

Yelp
Amazing food per the elders in our family. They are all great cooks so their praise does not come easily.

Kenneth K.

Yelp
I ordered from here on Monday for dinner on UberEats. I got the Family Chicken Dinner special with four sides which were Plantains, Yucca Fries, Pasta Salad, and Corn. The chicken was delicious and all three of their sauces were great as were all four of our sides. The portions are very generous and the prices are very affordable. The prices may be lower in person here which is not uncommon but they had a $10 coupon to try them on UberEats. We will likely order from here again and/or dine here in person or have my wife do carry out as her work is also in NoMa.
google avatar

Yelp
Todo fue súper rico! Amazing latin food! Was pleasantly surprised because I wasn't expecting much. I shared a grilled chicken skewer and a grilled shrimp skewer plate and i tried the plantains, rice and beans, tomato salad and brussel sprouts, with 3 types of sauce. I definitely overate because of how delicious it all was. Was especially impressed by how good the skewers were. This place doesnt seem like much from the outside but it's very legit.
google avatar

Joshua K.

Yelp
An excellent experience! I ordered the half chicken with a large corn and yucca fries via delivery. The food arrived hot and on time. The portions are large at affordable prices and are good for multiple meals. The chicken was delicious, well-cooked and still juicy, with good seasoning and the corn was perfectly cooked. The yucca fries were bland and needed a dipping sauce and the mayo that came with the chicken was meh-I had ordered a spicy sauce that didn't seem to be included. Although I would get something other than the yucca fries as a side, I'm glad I tried District Rico and I would absolutely recommend.

Alex M.

Yelp
Food, service and ambiance was good. Enjoyed the seasoning, portions, and cleanliness of the place...

Yelp
While I haven't visited this restaurant in-person, my orders through GrubHub have been on point!! The chicken is flavorful and seasoned well, and juicy. The sides are filling and are also very good. I got the brussel sprouts and fries. The brussel sprouts are coated with a carmelized type of ingredient that packs a big much. The only negative about them is that they are usually pretty big which makes it hard to eat them whole like normal sized ones, so keep a knife handy to cut them smaller. The fries were also very good. I must say the sauces are probably the best I've had out of all similar chicken spots, especially the green sauce!! Oh my, my, my!!! I just had them for lunch today and I'm really contemplating on ordering them for dinner - they are just that good!

Ratima W.

Yelp
I love the food here! They are consistently good. The staff are friendly and helpful. It's close to my office so I'm there probably more often than I should be. It's definitely a better option than fast food. The ambiance is nothing special, but most people don't eat inside anyway. The Brussel sprouts are my absolute favorite! This will definitely continue to be one of my go-to spots for lunch!

Mateusz O.

Yelp
This food was not good, it made me feel sick and was just bad please do me a favor and close 1 star review very bad This place was straight up bad People in my group thrown up from this food and it made me have diarrhea in there bathroom so don't go in there the service was okay but the food was shit that's how bad it was #sorrychicken #notworthit #bad #garbage

S H.

Yelp
Food was fantastic!! It must be a crime for employees to smile :-) According to Yelp, I must key in 85 characters, hope this does it.

Maria Sonia V.

Yelp
Delicious flavorful food and kind service! It was a bargain - good value for your money!

Jared B.

Yelp
If you are trying to stay with high protein food with some delicious greens, this is a great place to eat. The chicken is fantastic, and they make Brussel sprouts taste good.
google avatar

Bill Y.

Yelp
BLUF: very tasty food at a reasonable price, at least for DC I've gone here several times for lunch with friends. The chicken is outstanding and is served very quickly. The steak dishes take a bit longer, but are also very good. Before you order the sides take a look at what they have to offer. All the sides are good but some are outstanding. If you like onions order the onion tomato salad for sure. They also have a great brussel sprout side. Be sure to grab your own napkins and utensils before you leave

Yelp
Amazing. I'm in the area from out of town, and I found this place on yelp, I'm glad I did. The staff was so friendly and the food was so quick. I brought it back to my hotel room and it was still warm. Everything looks so good so I got way more than what I needed. I got half a chicken, rice, fried yuca, plantains and pasta salad. Omg. The food was amazing and I have so much leftover. I honestly wouldn't have gone back just for the friendliness of the employees lol. But this place is worth it!!!

Scott S.

Yelp
Excellent chicken and sides. Favorite sides are Brussels and carrots as well as spinach and potatoes. Probably best Peruvian chicken in dc.
google avatar

Julio C.

Yelp
So far I have tried: 1) Lomo Saltado 2) Bistec a lo pobre 3) Tres leches. So far it is a five star place. Still a lot more things in the menu to keep visiting. This place makes me feel home!
google avatar

Cecille C.

Yelp
There are not many places for lunch in the Noma area and this place stands out. I have tried chicken and steak and both them tasted great. However, be careful about the portion size as it's a lot of food for a regular lunch. So we usually just order 1/4 chicken with two sides which has smaller meal size and cheaper than the signature meals on their menu. But it's still a lot to finish though. You have to work and think really hard in the morning and make yourself hungry.

L M.

Yelp
Ordered the family meal - whole chicken and 4 sides via delivery. The food was very tasty. Would recommend.

Clawde B.

Yelp
Beef bad tough tacos were indelible, my wife did not eat her entree, just ok, would it eat again

Paige A.

Yelp
all I want is a bean burrito (vegetarian--just beans cheese and rice) & a drink. every time they charge me $15 and ring it up as a full chicken burrito. can the leadership please train the staff on how to handle and ring up these order requests?
google avatar

Antwan W.

Yelp
So I've been here at least four or five times in the last two months or so. The Inca salad is my go to. I have other dishes and they were always very good. The staff are cool and really mellow. I've ordered one minute before closing time and they've always treated me with courtesy. The chicken is just sooooo good. I give this place four stars because on a few occasions I had to wait super long for my salad. It was almost as if they forgot about me. This is a no no especially when a brother is hangry (hungry & angry).
google avatar

Heidi M.

Yelp
I've only ordered takeout -- half chicken (white meat) with rice and yucca fries-- and it all exceeded my expectations. The chicken was juicy, flavorful, and the yucca fries were some of the best I've tried in the area. The green sauce has a nice kick and flavor to it, so order extra. Portions are generous and their prices are reasonable.
google avatar

Tom L.

Yelp
This is a great counter order restaurant. The sandwiches are delicious, as is the stir fry. There's some room to sit inside, and I've never seen it too crowded to find a spot.
google avatar

Elie S.

Yelp
Chicken is so moist and delicious. Love their Inca salad, which is a great portion and their sauces are so yummy!

Jason H.

Yelp
Food was amazing. Chicken, fried rice and Brussels sprouts and carrots were delicious. Ordered on uber eats first time eating this. I have told at least 10 people about this restaurant today.
google avatar

Karyn Z.

Yelp
The chicken on the racks looked great and there were lots of people eating in this place so I tried it for lunch today. The guy who cashed me out said I should have ordered a chicken plate but it was too late. I had already gone with a safe bet - a chicken burrito. Oh how I disliked everything about this food. Every ingredient was bland and dry or wilted. The sauces were particularly awful - essentially just mayo with degrees of flavors added, none edible. There was supposed to be pico and guacamole. The pico was a few diced tomato pieces. I got one bite of a blob of guacamole. I ended up unwrapping it to see if there was anything salvageable. Nope. Into the trash it went. Even my Pepsi was warm :(
