Virginia’s Newest Barbecue Joint Opens Inside a Founding Farmers | Eater DC

"Hidden at the back of the six-floor National Union Building, a desk and a secret passcode (or just a knowing glance) grant entry to a fully revitalized 1920s speakeasy that now extends upstairs with vintage Baltimore church lights, an original tin ceiling, and hand-formed bricks along the walls; head down a spiral staircase to the full bar in the original hidden room, which had four distinct entrances when it was first built. Rediscovered during building repairs in the 1990s and later opened to the public by Pirate Ventures (the team behind Hook Hall and Kraken), the space now serves a menu ranging from skirt steak with chimichurri to a show-stopping bananas foster for dessert, with reservations available online." - Tierney Plumb

So happy we stumbled upon this place. Such a great speakeasy! Literally designed to replicate early speakeasies, complete with a spiral iron staircase, the deep green velvet and industrial combo is so fun. Love the bartender too. Great central location too. Fun gem.

I almost don't want to leave a review because the less people that know the better... This bar is incredible. Absolutely incredible. ✨ The atmosphere is great but it's the bartenders that take the cake. They're so friendly and creative, we were so well taken care of! And to top it off the drinks were divineeeee 🔥❤️

Great underground cocktail bar with a speakeasy feel! We were searching for a nice place for a couple of beverages before dinner, and district still was a nice find while we were walking the area. I had an Oaxacan old fashioned and it was well balanced and delicious. Their cocktail list wasn’t long and had a lot of the classics but with some twists- like the Negroni that had a barrel aged gin. Dan who tended to us was super helpful and an expert mixologist. Overall we had a great time!

Went to check out this new hidden bar. It's in an event space building. It was a bit creepy at first bc it's down at the end of the hall. But I'm sure that was playing with the theme. The bar is cool and unique with a spiral staircase. Our bartender Johanna was super sweet and made some badass drinks! We didn't really eat but the menu looked good! The mini charcuterie board was decent but a bit pricey. The place is very quiet. You're the only party until another couple arrived.

Ended up here by accident, great experience! The drinks are reasonably priced (especially for the area), atmosphere is fun, and it still feels like an old-school speakeasy and hidden gem. But what really makes this place is the bartenders. Both very knowledgeable and helpful - they'll make sure you enjoy yourself. Can't recommend this spot enough!

This Speakeasy recently opened and the decor/furniture is unmatched. I tried the skirt steak with chimichurri, burrata, and sweet potato with plantains. I'm not a vegetarian but the cooking on the sweet potato (as a hispanic) is mouthgasmic. Zac is a phenomenal bartender who can curate a cocktail based off what you need vs. what you normally might order. Thank me later.

We stopped by here for some small plates, cocktails, and dessert. It was amazing - we’ll definitely be coming back! Great new addition to the neighborhood
