Where to Eat Near American University - Eater DC

"A go-to for freshly grilled, affordable Mexican food, District Taco’s Tenleytown location is popular with A.U. students for Yucatan-style tacos, burritos, and quesadillas. All can be customized, but favorites include breakfast tacos and California burritos, which are loaded with steak, guacamole, chipotle mayo, black beans, rice, and potatoes." - Lisa Ruland

Came in and liked the easy ordering process on the screens. The wait wasn't long as they prepped the food and when it came, it was extremely tasty. We really enjoyed the food and the atmosphere. I must say that the guacamole was really really good. Like really good! Lol I recommend this place.

Google
I love getting breakfast burritos here. And the staff always have a kind smile. There is one manager, Nicole, who showers you with warmth when you walk in the door.

Google
A great place to go grab quick tacos. The tacos are actually really good and you get unlimited toppings of your choice. They have a bad that had sides and sauce incase you think they will be too heavy with toppings. The staff here was excellent. Overall this is a good taco chain.

Google
[UPDATE 2021Oct] Still very glad to have this in the hood. However, the quality has diminished (one star removed). I found my order incorrectly prepared. Ingredients are still fresh and there are a variety of choices to modify one's tacos. The chorros are still spot-on and delicious before or after the meal. Consistently good quality and value regardless of location. Quick service. Try swapping fish for the spicy shrimp taco.

Google
We had a great experience at District Taco! We were hungry for lunch and in the area and decided to stop by District Taco. We were shocked to walk in and see few customers sitting down in the shop. We both ordered custom tacos: 3 chicken and 3 pork. The meat was perfectly cooked, and the vegetables were fresh. Everything tasted as if it was made to order. If you're looking for great tacos on the outskirts of DC, District Taco is the place to be!

I love this place so much employees are always kind. My girl Nicole always gives me the best customer service, she knows exactly how to provide great communication, amazing listening skills & is quick to find a solution to any issue. She does an amazing job I enjoy Nicole’s assistance every time she never fails to amaze me with her customer service skills.

Google
I went today on the advice of a friend. My friend and I placed our order, and the cashier's demeanor immediately gave us weird vibes. We let it go due to the heat and because their air conditioner wasn’t working. They not only messed up my friend's order, but they also didn't know their own policies. And they food dry

During my 1st time visit to District Taco in Tenleytown, I had the pleasure of being assisted by Daniel, a very sweet and professional server who helped me navigate the menu as it was my first time there. His attentive service made the experience even more enjoyable. The ambiance of the restaurant was warm and inviting, creating a comfortable atmosphere. The food was delicious and of high quality, making it a standout choice for anyone craving a tasty meal. I highly recommend District Taco for anyone looking for a satisfying dining experience!

Yelp
Great food and customer service .The location was easy to find and very clean inside.

Noble J.

Yelp
I love this location! My wife and I both have gluten sensitivity, and the team here always goes above and beyond to make sure our meals are safe and thoughtfully prepared. Every time we visit, the food is fresh, flavorful, and consistently delicious. The staff is kind, attentive, and welcoming--shoutout to the manager, Moises, who always checks in on us and makes sure we're taken care of. It's rare to find a place that combines great food with such genuine hospitality. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Stephanie and gloria both have great customer service and the food was here is always fresh and amazing

Yelp
This is our go to spot for tacos in NWDC. The service is always great and the authentic DT flavors are always on point. This chain is iconic for a reason!

Yelp
Stephanie tuff asl. She always hooks me up with good food and I really appreciate it.

Yelp
We love all of the District Taco's but this one just fell badly. We walked in to an empty restaurant around 11:15 and the three staff members were just chatting. We ordered...sat down...no one made our food. I thought perhaps they needed to cook but no - all of the prep bins were full of food. I had to walk over and look at the prep bar as the three stood around chit chatting until they saw me and made the two burritos and one bowl. The rice was terribly undercooked (even a few raw ones mixed in), and the chicken so charred I couldn't eat it. I could tell none of the window counter tables had been wiped down so I had to use sanitizer on napkins to clean. Won't come back to this location. Really disappointing as we haven't experienced this at any other location.

Yelp
I Blame myself I think district taco is only good for the people that were born here. I ate here before and said it was nasty, but decided to give them another chance. The flavors just aren't right for Mexican/latin food. I'm sorry I took one bite and spit everything on the floor.

Brian B.

Yelp
I use to visit the location in Tyson Corner...i never had an issue but this place can't get your order right. I was directed to use the electronic order and put my request in. Nothing came out right even after stating that there were specific allergy issues with one bowl. After much hesitation, they said they would remake it. I again explained the order and even when asking "no cheese" they still threw a stack of cheese on the order. I explained the issue and they decided to scrape it off and not make a new order. Very sad. They explained that they were closing in 60 minutes and only have enough food to finish the day. I don't know, but it just seemed like a whole lot of I don't care at this place.

Geoffrey S.

Yelp
Yelp won't let me take a photo without mic access but this place put all rice in a burrito and then gave me two of them for $40. The service was friendly but the dude clearly knew what he was doing. I would like to watch him eat all this rice because it absolutely sucks and I'm sure he knew it when making it.

Yelp
Went to the newish college park location last spring. Franchised mediocrity. Points for cashing in.

Yelp
It breaks my heart to write a 2-star review for District Taco, one of my favorite places to get a delicious taco and a great price. The location was busy, but the busyness is not my issue. I ordered my usual: three vegetarian tacos with all of the toppings. When I order that at the two downtown DC locations I normally frequent, the tacos are huge, filling, fresh, and oh-so-good! The experience here was none of that. The ingredients ratio was all off, and the tacos were about 1/3 filled as they are at the other locations. There were barely any beans, cheese, or sour cream, and the tacos were mostly cabbage slaw, which did not make for a very tasty meal. Also, the tortillas were stale and not a satisfying wrap. I was hungry and tempted to even order something else. $10 did not go very far here. I will stick to my downtown locations!

Yelp
Chicken or beef quesadilla is a perfect lunch event. Go to Reno park to eat it and chill.

Yelp
First time here visiting from NJ. Great food, prepared fresh and fast. I had the steak taco and chicken taco. Very good!

Yelp
I love district taco but they did me horrible today, I order four tacos of carne asada, and not one of the had enough meat, it had a lot of onions like an insane amount, I don't recall ordering tacos of onions, I almost wanted to drive back and go throw the food at them, it was really disappointing, if I ever go back to this place I will watch them while they make my food because that was unacceptable, i don't know the guys name who made my food but I know what he looks like and I will remember him, I seen him a couple of times before wearing his tight ass shirts but this is the first time he made my food, why is he hugging all the meat ? Does he buy it ? Like i don't understand what makes him think it's ok....That's probably the reason why those shirts are to tight . If you like the tacos just watch them while they make your food, if you don't like tacos ? Keep driving because they are expensive and for how stingy they are is crazy to me and I will not email you anything, if anything talk to your employees about proper service , no one eats tacos of onions only

Yelp
Came here out of someone's suggestion and ordered 3 tacos to try. Usually they lay out the tacos on a plate or basket. I did not see it coming when they wrapped it in a paper wrap. Food was pretty good, chips and queso was definitely worth the price. 3 tacos for $8/$9 depending what you get. Gotta pay to add a few other toppings. They do have a sauce bar but only have about 4 or 5 different sauces of different spices. I would come back, and it was pretty decent food, but I hate that we pay for parking, can't win them all I guess.

Yelp
I only blame myself. I think the regular burrito here is....not good. So why did i think the breakfast burrito would be okay? I didn't expect it to be smothered in some sort of sauce. Damn. DAMN! And i shouldn't have ordered it with veggies which i forgot means x x x green peppers and some onions. The cheese inside was not melted, there weee very few potatoes. In fact when I finally came upon one I got scared about what suddenly had the texture of a rock in my mouth, and spit it out. The tomatoes and lettuce on the side seemed like they had been in the coldest fridge ever. At 11:30 am i wanted to make a better choice for myself than nachos. But this was pretty much a waste of money. The gentleman at the register greeted me promptly. I just wish the food had flavor here.

Yelp
DT has always the best tacos. I like to get the 3/$9 and always get the jefe way which is lettuce, pico, veggies, cheese & sour cream just because I don't like a boring tacos and for my protein I like the carne asada & pollo asado i also like to get a side of chips with guacamole. They give decent amount of guacamole but I wish they can give us a little more to match the amount of chips they give. Location is very convenient and has a lot of street parking.

Yelp
One of the worst customer service experiences I have ever had because of Jennifer, the manager at this location. I made a Too Good To Go order with a pickup of 930pm. When I arrived to pick it up, Jennifer flippantly told me "oh we don't have any food left." So a customer pays in advance for food, takes time at night to drive and pick it up on time (and 30 minutes before closing), and is just told "we don't have any food left." I'm pretty sure that's not how business... any business... works. I have had Too Good To Go orders cancelled by the company in the past, but that is done far in advance of the pickup time. Why? So customers don't spend time driving to a location for no reason. Jennifer never said sorry, never offered a refund, nothing. I don't even care about the money back at this point. This is just not how to treat any customer...

Yelp
We've used DT in the past for catering and everyone enjoyed it. So when I had a strong craving for some tacos, I knew this was the place to go. Parking - As you know, parking in D.C. can be very hard and stressful. Luckily, someone was leaving as I was coming in. Be prepared, especially during lunch time. Now, the prices aren't the best. 3 small tacos for $9? Crazy. Back home, I get 6/$5, but hey...it's D.C., right? I went with the 2 steaks and 1 chicken but ended up with 2 chicken and 1 steak which turned out great. The chicken tacos were amazing. Full of flavor. The steak tacos were pretty bland, but the Verde sauce came to the rescue. The tacos are small and it wasn't filling for me, but it was definitely delicious. Does it compare to your wholesome tacos stands in FL, TX, CA? No. But it gets the job done. I will be returning!

Yelp
Moises is the man! Great food at a reasonable price! Best breakfast burrito in all of DC!!!
google avatar

Shanita W.

Yelp
Great prices and great food! Service was superb. Food was made to order. Various different toppings for your food. Recommendations that were presented to me and my family were amazing. If you are in the area I recommend that you try this establishment out! Not pictured are the chips and queso and they were phenomenal!
google avatar

Brian S.

Yelp
This is a great place to get a burrito, nachos, quesadilla, etc. I like the self serve condiments and generic soda selection. If you're going plan on ordering chips and queso, they don't come free but you can take it home and reheat for a snack later.

Carsten R.

Yelp
Food took terribly long to make. I was waiting for a good 20-25 minutes to get my food and once I received my food it was all wrong and even 1 burrito was missing. When I came back to tell them I was missing my food, one worker had told me they had already made it and that I was wrong. They eventually remade my order and it was still wrong. Not to mention the food is extremely over priced for the quality. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY HERE.

Casey K.

Yelp
Been a long-time stop whenever I come to DC. Gotta say ingredients a kinda dry; but, this was my introduction to corn tacos. Make sure to get chips and guac on the side, might be what they do best. I got their burrito once and it was pretty mid, so stick with the tacos. Cooks are friendly. Pretty fast-food, but depending on the location it might be really crowded.

Peter R.

Yelp
Not what it used to be: no tacos al pastor, Boylans soda or the salsa bar. They don't seem to care anymore.
google avatar

Violeta B.

Yelp
DT is the McDonald's of Tacos. Its quick, cheap and yummy. I always order the three tacos & get chicken, carnitas and beef. The chicken tacos are soooo good! The guac is decent and the queso is more cheese sauce than actual melted queso, but it still does the trick. In this particular location service has always been okay, it's self service meaning that when tables are uncleaned it's more a reflection of the person who ate there rather than the staff itself. All in all, DT is a good/kinda healthy alternative to regular fast food!
google avatar

James W.

Yelp
Huge fan of the District Taco chains and have never had anything less than a 4/5 experience among the three other chains I have been too... that changed completely tonight. Walked in and the place was littered with trash. The three workers were cleaning the grills and putting away the food at 8:45- they close at 10. Ordered a couple burrito bowls for my girlfriend and I and despite being the only ones in the restaurant, they were completely wrong. Watched a guy come up to grab his take out order which he noticed had chicken not steak. The bowls were 3/10- very small, seemed like she was using scraps and like I mentioned, not what we ordered. Never coming back here again and don't recommend you do either; try the Arlington area or other DC chains. This place is a s*** hole

Yelp
As most taco aficionados in the DMV know, the region has a serious shortage of good tacos. District taco attempted to fill this gap years ago by starting a food truck which was a big success and has now resulted in numerous District Taco brick and mortar locations in the area. Overall their tacos are definitely better than your average DC taco. They still leave some room to be desired in the flavor department but luckily their salsas help in that regard quite nicely. I recently tried their huevos rancheros which I have to admit looked pretty impressive although completely different in appearance from any huevos rancheros I've eaten before. On top is a fried egg covered with a moderately hot sauce (although to me it isn't that spicy). Underneath is a layer of cheese, rice and beans with a corn tortilla at the base. Overall it was good but not truly great. The tortilla was very dried out, the egg was fairly bland as was the rice. In the end, the salsa bar saved this dish and is why I keep coming back on occasion. The place was very clean and service was quick too. Still way better than Chipotle!

Liz P.

Yelp
Quick, made-to-order tacos.. how can I be NOT satisfied? I've stopped by this District Taco location a few times & I've only ever ordered the 3 tacos for $8. All times -- made quickly (less than 5 minutes), tasty, fulfilling, and way above average on my taco rating scale. You pick the meat/flavor, your choice of toppings, and there is a sauce bar for your preference of taste/level of spice. This place is definitely more of a fast-food dining experience so don't expect anything over the top. I've personally never had a bad experience here, and I've enjoyed all of the tacos I've had. They do have burritos, bowls, and quesadillas.. but I haven't gotten around to trying these. I personally did NOT enjoy the chips & gauc, but the delicious tacos make up for the stale disappointing chips.
google avatar

Ruth C.

Yelp
One and a half stars. Not nearly as strong as the VA location I've been to before. Salsa bar is fine, though riddled with moldy bell peppers on ice. The al pastor is the best protein choice we've gotten, with barbacoa as a close second. Chorizo was okay, but the carne asada was really disappointing-- big chunks but overcooked. Should've gotten a side of rice with my trio of underfilled tacos, and the salsa was crucial in countering the lack of seasoning.
google avatar

Joanna M.

Yelp
Mediocre fast casual Mexican fare? Sign me up! In all seriousness, I was at District Taco over the weekend, and was disappointed by poor service (mostly of the teenager-who-would-rather-be-anywhere-else-than-talking-to-you variety) and meh tacos. I had three chicken tacos on soft flour tortillas with onion and cilantro. While the meal was filling, the tacos immediately fell apart and featured more of the filling than the meat. None of it seemed overwhelmingly fresh, although I could clearly taste the cilantro. To their credit, there was lots of available seating and the selection of custom sodas is pretty impressive. But considering how much of an "it food" tacos are right now (and how impressed I was recently by Taco Bamba), there's no reason to go back after a flat experience.
google avatar

Kirah T.

Yelp
Tacos were okay, ahem, I meant taco. Because I only received one. I said "3 for 9 tacos please" and I got one. Safe to say my night was ruined. The churros are always good, expect for when they look like a skinny p*nis. I will not be returning.
google avatar

Yasmine B.

Yelp
I've been to District Taco twice... I went twice in one week... don't judge me lol. I am a fan! I've only had the chicken tacos which are delicious. I've ordered with a mix of flour and corn tortillas. I keep it simple... just lettuce and cheese. I spice it up by mixing the two mild salsas they offer (they're soooo good). Ohhh and their queso??! THE BEST I'VE HAD (in comparison to Qdoba and Chiptotle). It's nice to add this restaurant into my list of quick and tasty tex Mex food!
google avatar

Bri R.

Yelp
Way better than bland, food poisoning laden Chi-nope-le. However, Im taking off a star for inconsistency in the proteins. I can tell when it's rushed vs when the chef cooks it WELL, you know charred on the outside, juicy on the inside. Ugh. *drools* On this occasion, after a killer workout, I had a free (via the stamp card) chicken taco (corn tortilla) "the mexican way" with cilantro and raw onion. Topped it with Tomatillo salsa from the bar. Simple but so delicious. Then, for the main event, I had the ensalada yucateca with romaine, half chicken/ half carne asada, pico, guac, cilantro and MORE raw onion with house dressing on the side. I also added a dark colored medium salsa from the bar. Super filling, not too salty or greasy/fatty. I havent eaten again today.
google avatar

Mere W.

Yelp
It wasn't my favorite place. It is a bit pricey for what you are getting. The food was okay, but not great. Would return there if in a pinch for a taco
google avatar

Nicola M.

Yelp
I am surprised at the average reviews. We frequent this location often as it is near my place of employment. I regularly get the ensalada yucateca. You can get any toppings and protein. The chicken and steak are both flavorful, and excellent on the salads. The shrimp tacos are awesome, but are only available two days per week. The salsa bar is always fresh, although the containers for the salsa are small! The queso is creamy and delicious, and the guacamole is consistently excellent.
google avatar

Brayden V.

Yelp
I ordered two tacos, and while they were delicious, as soon as I unwrapped them, all of the contents spilled out. Don't get me wrong, I know how tacos work, a third of the stuffing is bound to escape from the tortilla blanket, but for real it should have been wrapped tighter or better served. I might come back who knows shrug
google avatar

Aileen D.

Yelp
3 tacos and chips and quest was the winner for dinner. I love the extensive customization you can apply to each taco, the small chips and Queso went a long way. Fresh salsas consistently delicious, I look forward to COVID ending and the salsa bar reopening. So good
google avatar

Melany C.

Yelp
Would love to give this place a 5 star but they did not have limes or any sauces available for the tacos. It should be illegal to eat dry tacos. The kids quesadilla was good and the soda option was great. The wait was long considering there were only 3 customers in total.
google avatar

Lauren H.

Yelp
I didn't get to take a picture before devouring my tacos as a Texan who takes their tacos seriously, I am so sad that I didn't discover District Taco sooner! The prices are great and you can get your tacos how you want them. They have a tasty and fresh salsa bar for all you pico, spice, and cilantro lovers like myself. The staff was friendly as it was my first time. I can't wait to go back and fill up on more tacos
google avatar

Gladstone P.

Yelp
None of the acolyte locations match the original on F street. Quality control is just not the same but is still a cut above in fast casual taco fare. All the elements are there, but somehow end result just doesn't match the hype of the founding store. Still like everything on the menu - I usually go with al pastor tacos and the nachos are the bomb! - but something is less flavorful and less well constructed (smaller portions?) than F St. Overall, it's in my neighborhood and I'm coming back but wish it was as good as the downtown location.
google avatar

Jacob S.

Yelp
I like the burritos with steak and cheese. They have good chips with salsa and queso. I would recommend coming here whenever your nearby, and best of all they have a complimentary salsa bar.
google avatar

Rocky P.

Yelp
The staff at the restaurant are very kind and engaged with the customer. I really feel like I'm talking to a real person when I'm ordering and getting my food, not a sad monotone person. There are delicious salsa options in a salsa bar allowing you lots of variation in your food, and the fountain drinks are retro and wonderful (birch beer, etc.) The food is not too expensive and tastes fantastic. The pico de galla (chicken) is unbelievably flavor-packed, the tacos are soft, and the vegetables are way more fresh than chipotle's. District Taco provides the customer with authentic Mexican cuisine, unlike Chipotle, that lacks the proper flavors and culture .

Jennifer L.

Yelp
I was an early adopter and huge fan of District Taco when it first opened. Before it had expanded to so many other locations so quickly. The prices have gone up and are ridiculous. I order a breakfast burrito with no additional protein at all, and yet I was charged the same as if I had ordered chicken, steak, or bacon. Spending $12 for a burrito with eggs and potatoes is completely ridiculous. Surfside, just up the street, sells a similar but much better and less expensive version. I know that prices have gone up everywhere, so this is less about the price itself than it is compared to the prices of items with meat. As a vegetarian, I'm used to this issue, but places like Chipotle have it figured out. DT should too. The prices have gone up and the sizes and quality have gone down. I won't be going back anymore.
google avatar

Gail C.

Yelp
Just okay fast food. Tacos are small and not very well stuffed. The nacho plate was good. Street parking. Access by walking and bus.
google avatar

Elise W.

Yelp
I went at 2 pm on a Tuesday when the restaurant wasn't busy and service was excellent. That's where the excellence ends, unfortunately. I had three tacos in corn tortillas: carne (jefe way), barbacoa (Mexican way), and carnitas (Mexican way). The carne and barbacoa were tasteless (did they season them at all?). The carnitas was the only one with some flavor. I've never had the jefe way (cheese, lettuce, pico, sour cream, and grilled veggies). The jefe way made the carne slightly more exciting but still not very flavorful. This is my first time at the District Taco in Tenleytown. I have been to the one in downtown DC a handful of times and I am usually disappointed (though I think this was the least flavorful experience). I lived in Mexico for a year and I think there are better places to get tacos in the area, including Fish Taco (three locations in Maryland; I usually get the shrimp or fish though) and Taco Bamba (VA).
google avatar

Will B.

Yelp
Below average food. The amount of chicken they give is so sad .. should be a crime to call it a chicken burrito. It takes like a chicken burrito you would get at Taco Bell. I come by because its close .. but always regret it. Better to go to Bandit Taco across the street. Better food, more of it, and less price
google avatar

Caitrin C.

Yelp
Pretty bummed with my experience here. I ordered online and arrived to find my card had been charged but the restaurant hadn't received my order. Annoying, sure, but the manager fixed it quickly by taking my order in person and filling it. When I got to where I was going (work), it was noted that the queso, as well as the beans were absent from the order. The chicken was absurdly stringy and the person who ordered the sour cream thought it was bad. Four stars for service. One for quality. Waaaaahhhh! I've always loved District Taco.

Joel S.

Yelp
Staff is patient and generous and happy to assist customers deliberating with their order. Strange that I ordered cheese as one of the toppings on my tacos but received cabbage by mistake. Tasted fine but I was at first taken aback why my cheese crunched. Regardless, Barbacoa meat AMAZING, as was carnitas equally OUTSTANDING. Carne asada... not my favorite / just ok. Toppings all fresh, delicious and generous. Guacamole and chips are excellent and portions generous. 3 tacos filled generously and each with double corn tortillas (and chips and guacamole) = a lot of food. Churros always a nice end to a good meal (and now = a ton of food!). Look forward to returning.
