17 Best Beaches Near New York City, From New Jersey to Connecticut | Condé Nast Traveler

"Just two miles from downtown Montauk, Ditch Plains is beloved for its consistent waves and status as one of the best surf spots in the area; when I’m not surfing I can explore nearby cliffs and sand dunes, grab lunch from food trucks, and hike Rheinstein Park’s trails with wooden bridges, lily-pad ponds and wildflower-filled fields." - Laura Dannen Redman

Awesome beach, great for surfing! Though the lifeguards think otherwise. I completely understand why they are there, but their attitude towards my group was completely unacceptable. Staring at us when walking by, and being verbally rude to us, WHEN WE ARE JUST TRYING TO HAVE A GOOD TIME AND SURF! We weren’t even in the swimmers zone, and they just swam to me and my group and told us we aren’t allowed to surf, though there were hundreds of other surfers around us and we were as good as them. We were causing no danger whatsoever, not even cutting off surfers while riding the waves! Just peacefully on our surf boards waiting for the next good wave. The lifeguard chair was waaaay out of our sight (they were in the swimmers zone!). They must have had a pretty bad day because they let out all their anger on us! I tried calling the beach over the phone, nobody picked up. I really hope ditch plains beach can really DITCH these rude lifeguards.

Lovely beach, wild and untamed. Come here if you like nature and pebbles. Crashing waves and strong cross currents. It is life affirming.

Great location. Parking lot next to beach (limited spots). Will get a ticket if parked in restricted areas. Food truck with food and beverage options. Bathroom with showers.

Ditch Plains Beach is a must-visit spot in Montauk! The beach offers excellent surfing and bodyboarding with some of the best waves on Long Island. The views are stunning, and the atmosphere is perfect for a relaxing day by the water. Pros: Ample parking available Bike rack for those who prefer cycling Clean restrooms on-site Cons: It can get crowded during peak season, but it's worth it! Ditch Plains Beach is a fantastic destination for beach lovers and surf enthusiasts. Don't miss out on this gem!

Don't bother !!! These so-called Cliffs are nothing more than some walkway that eroded. Actually quite sad, proof that the beach is slowly eroding. Someone wrote that this beach is a public beach. We came on a cloudy day, just to walk and see and ended up with a $150.00 ticket. We checked the time, they wrote it out 8 minutes before we returned to our car. So no it is not a public beach. Unless you have a permit you can not park here. On top of that, the only signs that say that you need a permit are on the side parking spots, we parked in the middle, where there were no signs. We thought it was ok since there was no sign designating otherwise. They have a sign for vendors to park, for handicap, and for residents all on the side parking spots but nothing in the middle. Except for a dead groundhog. Don't bother making the trip !!

I love this beach. We come to Montauk in late winter early spring to house/pet sit and there are always so many locals here. There is always something interesting to be seen here and the sun is almost always shining. 🐾
