I was in the Brompton Road store today and bought several items in one transaction. One of the items was a small plain white ceramic butter dish, approx 5 inches in size. I was purchasing for a friend who lives alone and had asked me that if i ever see a small one on my travels she would love to have one.
i took the items to the till and whilst standing there i noticed that it was not possible to track the items because there was no read out facility to see what was being charged. I bought two small miniature spoons in the same transaction which had no price tag on them.
I paid on my credit card and was taken aback at the final bill thinking that it must have been the spoons. I was handed the recipt only to find that the small butter dish was not £4.80 as I had thought, but £48.00.
I pointed out my error immediately and asked for the dish to be taken back as it wasn't for me, it was intended as a gift. I was promptly informed that I was not entitled to a refund, only a credit note.
My dilemma fell on deaf, unsympathetic ears and I was informed that they had not broken the law. I was shocked by the response because I had not mentioned any law having been broken I merely wanted the shop keeper to demonstrate an empathetic attitude towards someone, namely their customer, who had purchased several goods, and had made a genuine mistake.
This was an honest and resonable mistake on my behalf, that could only be identified afer payment, due to limitations, namely a non existent cash register display.
The mistake was highlighted in a timely manner - there and then, immediately upon reading the receipt.
I was shocked at the inflexible attitude from the staff, especially in light of the fact that my family were once shop owners and goodwill, repeat custom was something that we had pride in.
In my submission, allowing a refund would have upheld the principle of fairness and transparency thus maintaining customer trust. It is for this reason that I give Divertimenti a one star rating which is a clear demonstration on my behalf of fairness, something which Divertimenti is severely lacking.
