"Though the name nods to a Little Feat album and not the South’s irredeemable past, it might raise a few hackles. Aggies call the restaurant “the Chicken” and flock there for chicken strip baskets, cold beer, and a rowdy time. There are indoor and outdoor dine-in services." - Brandon Watson

This is a classic must do place in College Station. The atmosphere is awesome. It is unpretentious and a rustic. I particularly enjoyed their UT shrine (see the photos and note there is a huge rattlesnake in it ). This is just what you would expect from an A&M hang out.

Google
This was my first time in this College Station institution. What a neat place!? The atmosphere was so cool - tons of fun things to look at. The food was so good - especially the chicken fried steak sandwich. The chicken fried steak’s breading stayed nice and crispy while the steak inside was tender and delicious. So glad I went while I was in town and would love to go back someday!

Google
Celebrated the Chicken's 50th birthday!!! Packed house , great food, cold beer, and the absolute best playlist!

I brought my dog to the A&M vet clinic and thought I'd reminisce from back when I was a college kid. I called to ask if someone could come out since I didn't want to bring my dog inside to let them know I was outside. Courtney was very snippy and said you have to come inside and leave your dog outside. I said ok then can I at least order over the phone and she snapped "you still have to come inside to get your food". I realize walking 50 ft could really put someone out so I responded that's fine, I'm just trying to minimize the amount of time I leave her unattended. Then I decided this wasn't the Aggie hospitality that I remembered and would rather go elsewhere. I had no issues going to get my own food but I don't need to be treated with rudeness before I even set foot in the door. No chicken tenders for Maggie

Monica Rivers

Google
It came highly recommended, honestly it was just ok… sorry y’all! No need for us to rush back at all. The smell of the venue put our daughter off eating. Menu options include ‘Stuff’ and ‘Death’… The only great thing about the evening was watching the Aggies beat U of Kentucky at baseball! Gig ‘em!

Google
The Chicken is an iconic College Station bar and a must stop. It has only gotten better with time and recently the manager was very accommodating of some unique requests I had. On top of all that, it is also a great atmosphere. What’s not to love? Make this your first stop.

Jeffrey Hyde

Google
This College Station fixture is a must-visit for visitors and a regular stop for locals. Be sure to take a Sharpie or something to carve your name in the tables. The food is as good as you’d expect from a dive bar like this. Haven’t had anything I wouldn’t try again. Burgers, fries, tater tots… Enjoy!!

Zachary Wagner

Google
Absolute classic stop any time we're in College Station. A legendary bar with better than average bar food and many decades of history. Grab a chicken fried steak sandwich for lunch and add on a Tijuana tots if you're hungry.

Jenn K.

Yelp
Exactly what you expect from a college town dive. Pepper gravy is great! We were there when classes were out and on a weeknight, so overall it was quiet

Joe G.

Yelp
We went after a soccer game and they were busy. Beer line was fairly quick. We found seating. They were limiting people going in which helped. Hard to say what they are like when a rush crowd isn't around.

John L.

Yelp
Don't go park mobile will give you a $58 ticket even though you paid. Don't pay and they won't come and give you a ticket. If you pay you send Barney a note to come check if you're gone.

Aaron H.

Yelp
Ok. It's a bar. We all know it we all love it. Dominos and some cheese fries go hand in hand. Add a pitcher and you're set.

Mark S.

Yelp
Good other than facilities. Burgers or chicken options. Fries and tots. It's a college bar so bathrooms are a dump, like disaster. Maybe that's the ambiance but just trying to have a beer and burgers. Suggestion - use the public facilities in the parking lot... way nicer.

Mark W.

Yelp
This place is always packed and has a great vibe. The food is wonderful, hearty and a great value. I always recommend this place to friends visiting from out of town

Sarah Z.

Yelp
Awful worker long brunette hair in a pink tank top 06May24, was really unprofessional and rude to several guests. As I was walking out purposefully shoulder checked me and made rude comments towards me. Followed by yelling at random guests for nothing made my whole time very uncomfortable at this bar. So disappointed, they need to remove this girl, seems consistent with other comments

Craig W.

Yelp
Not a bad place to kill a few hours. Good burger and beer kinda place that's not pretentious. Go check out the rattlesnake.

Russell S.

Yelp
Awesome spot with great food and beer. Crowded on game day, but that's what you pay for.

Jessica B.

Yelp
10/10 love this place. The environment is lively and the people working are amazing. Every time I come here I get the meat and cheese tray. It always reminds me of when I used to come there during college. The seating was packed because of game day but plenty of Aggies squeezed in and made room for others.

Elizabeth K.

Yelp
If you give the Dixie Chicken less than five stars, you're wrong. The Chicken is the definition of a dive bar and is a College Station/Texas A&M staple. There's always so many people there just having a good time, drink prices are unmatched, and you get to carve your name on the tables. What more could you want? As far as food, the Tijuana fries, or "T Fries," are a must. I suggest getting them with bacon and ranch. Whenever I'm in town, the Chicken is a non-negotiable spot for my friends and I and I always have a great time. I highly recommend checking it out when you're in town for a game! COVID Precautions: Minimal

Connor B.

Yelp
Best place in college station for a cold beer or a good burger. Bartenders and cooks are always friendly. Pool tables and plenty of space to play dominoes.

mia z.

Yelp
SERVICE: Girl with Dutch braids, brunette, blue eyes was TERRIBLY rude. She over charged my friend and I for a pool game and we tried to politely correct her and she was hostile, angry, and very insulting. She sarcastically apologized and called me broke for just asking for help resolving our issue. She was in a fight with her coworker at the time of where the issue started so I would understand the mistake, but there was no reason to be mean or aggressive. Love the chicken, service is bad.

Curt C.

Yelp
Oh I'll be your Dixie Chicken, if you'll be my Tennessee lamb. We can walk together in Dixieland! This is the most epic bar in Aggieland! What other bar has a live giant rattlesnake that they leave unattended in the corner? What could possibly go wrong?! This place has been a College Station staple since the 70's. It's a dive bar for the students, offering drink specials most weeknights. I came in for Whiskey Wednesday, and Whooop! They pour heavy handed shots. Yeehaw! Beers are cheap, and they have a wide selection of cheap beers. Be sure to carve your name somewhere for prosperity sake. The tables are all carved to hell, and the bathroom seems to be a fine place to carve your own name in case you forget it. The staff is nice, and they seem to have seen it all. They offer merch! The playlist here is totally epic. All Texas bands, or ones who sing about Texas. The food here is rather mediocre, nothing to write home about. It's bar food. Plain and simple. It seems the Tijuana Fries are the best thing on the menu. I wish I'd known. The place seems a bit dusty and smelly. But that's part of the charm of the dive bar. It seems all the best Aggie stories start here or at Kyle Field.

Lauren M.

Yelp
The nostalgia alone makes this place great, which every Aggie will tell you. This is a great spot for a simple order - pitchers of beer, burgers, etc. My burger looks like nothing special, but I can assure you, it definitely is. Opted for the 1/4 pound burger with fries (have to add them on) this trip and it was great! Promise the cheese melted more later! Haha. I'll always come back to The Chicken for some great bar food and to relive memories with friends. They have a great country playlist as well!

Tay M.

Yelp
Best place to eat ever!! Service and staff are amazing. Food is beyond excellent! Entertainment is always good as well

Mike E.

Yelp
They get super busy but they serve you quickly. I'd you just want to try their food, I suggest lunch. At night it's mostly a bar and it's crowded. Always fun though.

McKenzie B.

Yelp
The Dixie Chicken has been around for MANY years, since 1974 to be exact! It was an establishment in my parents college years. Therefore, people you cannot EXPECT some high class, clean establishment. It is based on family tradition and school history. It's one of my families favorite places to hang out before games, after games, Sunday lunch, ring weekend...we'll go for some beers, a burger and some appetizers! We love their T-fries to be precise and add bacon with ranch! We've had so many memories at the chicken and can't wait to one day bring our own kids to create their own memories. The chicken will forever be an establishment that is your traditional college dive bar filled with many Aggies, people visiting but always the best and nicest people willing to greet you to Aggieland!

Chase K.

Yelp
So let me say this. Food is amazing there it would be 5 stars for that if the manager wasn't an asshole. Me and some buddies went to go drink and all of were 21, my one buddy showed his ID and got rejected because his card was damaged. So I bought alchohol for him. Whenever I went to purchase myself some alcohol later I got threatened that they were gonna call the cops and kick us out. Again, go there for the food not drinks. Also don't go there for game nights, they play music over everything and don't put on subtitles.

Peikai M.

Yelp
Had a chicken sandwich and a double burger. Asked for no cheese on the burger and still had cheese. Flavours was mediocre and nothing special for quite a high price.

Philip K.

Yelp
Burger was not good. Don't see for yourself. Go eat somewhere else and then come for the cold beer and great ambiance.

John M.

Yelp
This is the kind of place that gloriously epitomizes all that defines what a dive bar should be. Even the name is from a rock and roll song by the band Little Feat. Personally, I think the 1973 Little Feat song "Dixie Chicken" is a great song and reminds me of what a song should be like playing in a dive bar. The song is filled with attitude and got a killer groove. This bar has been here forever, ok, maybe not forever, but a long time. Generations of college kids and locals have had a beer or three here. For food, I guess they are best known for their burgers. While they ate nothing incredible, I have to say that this place is more about the divey atmosphere. I guess the Freddy burger, named after the cook,is the way to go. Again, it's just a half pound cheeseburger. If you find yourself in the area, seeing on by. Create a memory like countless other people have created at this iconic dive bar that just screams Texas.

Joanna S.

Yelp
I love the Dixie Chicken. Been coming here for over 30 years. The atmosphere and music are what makes the Chicken such a cool place. We visited this last week, and everyone that worked there acted like they could care less about their job. Every single server and bartender had their head stuck in a phone. When I went to the bar for a beer, I had to wait for three employees to finish their personal conversation first before they would wait on me. My friend went into the bathroom and there was no toilet paper. One of the employees came in, and she told her they were out of paper. The girl said, "Yeah, someone just told me," handed her a wad of paper and laughed, "Well, welcome to the Chicken." Understand for me to give the legendary Dixie Chicken less than 5 stars is sacrilegious, but the crew working there on that day needs to be straightened out or kicked out.

David D.

Yelp
Freaking awesome place for at least 43 years that I can vouch for. Ambience Service Music Food Awesome

Hannah K.

Yelp
We ordered two burgers and the chicken tenders meal and the queso and salsa they were all delicious! The atmosphere was wonderful and would be fun place to drink at night unfortunately we came here for lunch it was not very crowded and we did not have to wait long for our food I definitely recommend coming here.

Brent L.

Yelp
Yes, it's a local institution, but I was really let down by the food. It's walk up counter style ordering and then they call your name to come pick up your food. Food came out quick and staff were friendly, no problems with either of those. The chicken fried chicken on toasted bread was just meh, ok. Chicken was juicy and not too greasy, but it just didn't have a lot of flavor to it. It was bland. Added a small order (which was actually a decent portion) of the Tijuana Fries. With a name like Tijuana Fries, I was expecting something with some heat. All it consisted of was fries smothered in Monterrey Jack and cheddar cheese. The picture on their website looks like it might have jalapenos and bacon on it, but mine didn't. These two items and a Bud Light was $17.75 - OUCH! The burger was pitiful looking and was $5 with no fries. Whataburger has MUCH better burgers than this one was. Positives: Plenty of seating 8 pool tables or so. Two bars to order more drinks from Outside deck The place has a cool vibe and a unique ambiance to it, maybe a good place to hang out and drink later in the evening, but for dinner, it is highly overrated. No bueno on this one folks.

Jeff H.

Yelp
Great atmosphere but mediocre food does not justify the high prices. Buffalo chicken sandwich had a patty that looked like it came from the frozen food section of Costco. Same with the tenders, had better at Cane's and Chicken Express. Great hole in the wall, dive bar ambiance though the stench of a beer soaked saloon takes some time to get used to.

John W.

Yelp
When I asked my A&M alumni friends where I should eat while visiting College Station for my first time, the overwhelming response was Dixie Chicken. Either they were all in on an inside joke or I need to find new friends. (Jk) I understand the history and nostalgia, but the food was terrible. Maybe I'm naive, but I would think a place called Dixie Chicken would have good chicken. Nope. It's chicken strips that any mediocre place would serve and they are served the most insipid gravy. The fries weren't seasoned and the guy at the register recommended I get a burger, because it was "quick", which was boring too! This was an utter disappointment.

Gracie R.

Yelp
Went there to try the chicken which we had heard of. Very disappointed that they were nothing but small chicken tenders which is more suited for children than grown men Lol. The hamburger is a much better suggestion to recommend. The worst thing about this restaurant is the filthy dirty disgusting restrooms. It doesn't look like it's every been cleaned mopped or sanitized in years. If a place doesn't keep the bathroom clean I hate to think what the kitchen cooking food must look like. All four of us agreed we would not be coming back or recommend to others. On the up side it is a very large place inside & plenty of seating inside & out.

Bob B.

Yelp
i ordered a plain burger and it came with mayo and mustard i went and said could i get it plain and they just wiped the mayo and mustard off.

Brandi S.

Yelp
Nice atmosphere whether you sit inside at one if the big picnic tables or outside. Food was great, service was quick, and prices are reasonable.

Jerry H.

Yelp
This is a fun spot! Lots for the eye too see as far as ambiance. It's like a country boys dream cave. Domino tables to eat on or play some games while listening to the best country music hits. The food was scrumptious! The walls in the building have an interesting set up in my opinion. It can be somewhat confusing the first time you go. The drink station is a mile walk from the tables but other than that it seems like a great place to hang and eat.

Payton S.

Yelp
Drove 2 hours to hangout and watch a HOME A&M game and they aren't playing the game... we asked the bartender if we could stream the game and they said go for it. We had the game playing for 10 min and a bouncer came and told us we couldn't stream it because it was "illegal" and turned it off and wouldn't give us anymore reasonings as to why we couldn't stream it after proving that it wasn't illegal. Very rude costumer service, would not recommend.

Haley S.

Yelp
People go here for nostalgia, but the chicken is far from the bar your parents talk about with such admiration in their tone and twinkle in their eye. Bar and "grill" is extremely dirty, the AC works and works well so that is why I'm rating a 2 star vs 1 star, food sucks, and beer selection subpar at best. Go to rough drought, obannons, or heck even the dry bean for decent drinks. If you want dusty taxidermied deer heads maybe pop in to the chicken for 30 seconds but you're better off just making friends with a local or a Texan (please forgive my generalization dear reader). What warrants the long review: my dog has been indoors here multiple times and was recently very rudely kicked out. Now even management sucks so what's the point of stopping here vs the many other good options? You decide fellow Yelper. -H

Melissa T.

Yelp
Such a cool place! Best burger I've had in a while, the fries were perfect too! Would have been even better if we had thought to add bacon and jalapeños

Jill S.

Yelp
This bar.... oh man.... the word "misogynistic" does not even come close to what I experienced. As an Austin-native, I asked for a cider--the answer was no, I asked for a Sauvignon Blanc--the answer was no. I asked for a can wine Rosé, to which they were advertising, the answer was "ma'am this is a country bar..." 20 minutes later, a white male friend asked for a can of Rosé, he was told "a girl just tried to order that and I didn't feel like looking for it.." So, of course, I saw these events occurring and felt COMPELLED to speak my truth. I said, "that's crazy! I just tried to order that and y'all were out:/" She then replied "if you want to have attitude, the I will kick you out" So, in that anecdote, you can take away that they are actively anti-female and as a woman, you are not safe. I am deeply disappointed, as I was only wanting a Rosé and I could not purchase it on the pure premise of misogyny.... All I'm saying is that, if you believe in 'pure-girl-power' do not go here. You will be better-served at Logies, who actually fired this bartender. Peace and Love--from a girl who cares about other girls.

Erin G.

Yelp
If I could give this place a 0 I would....as a college student going here I was treated like shit rude bartender who I was very nice to... I asked to speak the manager and they acted like they didn't know who the manager my service there was shit honestly.

Jillian L.

Yelp
Bartender was really rude, basically told us to get our own drink, and mixed up our tabs

Ben F.

Yelp
I just brought my girlfriend from out of town here and I couldn't be more embarrassed and appalled by the bartenders. The female bartender with brown hair and thick eye brows called my girlfriend a "fucking bitch" when she was finished ordering a drink. The blonde bartender in the back bar was so rude and had no respect when I waited in line to order my drink because my girlfriend could get one for me. I'm DISGUSTED.

Carter S.

Yelp
I mean I LOVE the onion rings and all the food and drinks provided by Dixie Chicken, but tonight was ridiculous. The bartenders were so rude, and I was even called a "bitch" by the long haired brunette working the bar. All because she needed another form of ID which I had, and still was not good enough. It sucks having experiences and great places ruined by rude people.

Aaron A.

Yelp
Ehhhh....more hype than true quality. It's a good place for college kids to hang, but not for the family for a great meal. Honestly it was below average. The white gravy with the chicken strips was runny like soup and the strips were no better than Dairy Queen's. We were all very underwhelmed. Sorry to be so blatantly honest.

Will R.

Yelp
I wish I could give ZERO STARS! This place is not wheelchair accessible, not ADA compliant, the staff were unwilling to help and quite frankly incompetent.

Justin K.

Yelp
Bathroom stinky but I like it. Bathroom very stinky. Bathroom smells like an air bubble in a sewage line. Good service. Bartender nice. Bathroom stinky.

Junie B.

Yelp
I feel like if I could see this place with the lights on, I would never set foot inside. But in the dark it's everything you could ask for in a traditional dive bar. I first came here in 1990 and now I got to bring my daughter back. It was fun sharing the tradition with her! Bartender in the adjoining room was kind of rude, so we just stick to the main bar.

Garrett D.

Yelp
If you've never been to College Station for a Texas A&M football game or any other Aggie event, the Dixie Chicken is a must go to establishment even if you don't drink. Inside the restaurant. This is one of the few restaurants in College Station that I consider a staple for the city. The inside is so unique with wooden sit-down tables, and walk up and order food area. It's kind of split up into three sections: food/drink order area, more quiet pool area, and a more open seating pool area. The food. They have a pretty good selection of comfort-bar food, ranging from burgers and fries to fried pickles and sausage, cheese & crackers. The Tijuana fries and fried pickles with ranch sauce are my absolute favorite. This place has been around since 1974 and is easily the most recognizable restaurant/bars in College Station/Bryan. I'd say this is a must go to when visiting the city.

Angie E.

Yelp
I don't get the hype...this place smells like stale piss. Food was mediocre at best. Employees behind the counter were incredibly grumpy. No one greeted or acknowledged us when we walked in. Tables were sticky. It's a dingy college bar, nothing special.

Madelyn D.

Yelp
This is definitely a hole in the wall kind of place, but I literally got three drinks for 10 dollars and the food is fire. They have a really nice patio area too.

Stella K.

Yelp
This is what I imagined a typical Texan bar would look like. Rustic decor, wood (and carved) tables, pool tables and quite good quality of 'fast food' (burgers and tacos). I enjoyed my 'Dixie taco'. Ground beef, cheese, Lettie and tomato, with a side of salsa, sour cream and nachos. Nothing extraordinary, but simply well done and filing. Sometimes, a simple meal is the most satisfying! Full bar. A cool place for lunch, and I am sure it's a great place to hang out after work. Good job and thank you, Dixie Chicken ...

K C.

Yelp
Anyone new to Aggieland or our traditions needs to stop in and have a beer & burger! Say hi to the rattlesnake and play some 42, while listening to some great country music. The history and tradition that the walls of the Dixie Chicken has witnessed is palpable with every visit. I recommend a Shiner seasonal pitcher, Tijuana fries and a table in the back bar. Family friendly during the day!

Kat P.

Yelp
I come here for the whiskey Wednesdays and never actually tried their food until recently. Honestly, the food is great! Definitely recommend the fried pickles.
