The Dixon Gallery & Gardens is a beautiful destination for a day trip with family and friends, offering to be immersed in artwork and peaceful outdoor spaces. Stroll through a well-kept flower garden that leads into a shaded trail, perfect for enjoying fresh air and nature with loved ones. I recommend setting aside 2–3 hours to explore both the indoor art galleries and the flower garden and trail. The gardens are immaculate—ideal for taking family portraits or just a serene escape from the city. Inside, you’ll find two main painting galleries: a temporary gallery which currently features the Susan Watkins collection from the Chrysler Museum of Art and the permanent oil paintings collection. I especially enjoyed the works of Susan Watkins, a highly regarded painter from San Francisco. Housed in a beautifully preserved colonial manor, the Dixon Gallery & Gardens stands out as my top choice for its blend of art, history, and natural beauty. Best of all, admission is free, and there’s plenty of parking. Enjoy your trip to Dixon!

The greenhouse is such a gem! Intimate & peaceful alternative to the larger Botanic Gardens next door - there's a gallery featuring rotating artists & a little café. The winding paths lead past art installations & sculptures, a beautiful rose garden and a romantic fountain. Missed the spectacular tulip show this time, but it's a cozy place for a walk in any season.

Dixon Gallery & Gardens is one of my all time favorite places in Memphis. The gallery is always a nice experience, and the gardens are exquisite. There are quiet spots to experience some zen, and the lawn is always great for a picnic or an event. We recently attended Symphony in the Garden for Mother’s Day and had a fantastic time! Would absolutely attend again. The Dixon remaining Free for Good is also such a service to the community, helping Memphis keep arts & culture accessible for all!

The Dixon is one of our favorite venues for work as a wedding florist. There are so many beautiful places to have the ceremony, and the reception area is gorgeous in the middle of the garden.

WONDERFUL!! What a jewel of the city. I came here with my daughter on a federal holiday and there happen to not be many people here. We came when they had a special train themed art exhibit and it was sensational. The Dixon does a fabulous job of spacing the art along with the incredible descriptions. In addition, there are several other exhibits such as an extensive porcelain collection of fine china (600 pieces) which was beautiful. We were very impressed and will be returning.

Google
hidden gem . we were visiting for a day Memphis. We have just googled this place by day's end , it was a short but marvelous visit , we spent more time seeing the art museum (although we did take a quick tour of the beautiful garden), the museum was absolutely museum, we did not expect to see so many high end paintings in this private collection. The staff were very friendly, the manager on site (Ms. Jenny) was very nice and so welcoming. We made a donation (as this is a free entrance museum and garden), we are considering buying the membership even though we are not from town, but we plan on visiting again. The whole family enjoyed the visit , so glad we discovered this place.

I honestly couldn't be more impressed and amazed this gem is in memphis. I've never heard it be mentioned, but when my girlfriend took me here I was so joyous to just know it exists. Its peaceful, gorgeous, and entirely serene. The rotating gallery was a pleasure to see as well. And as always, YOU CANT BEAT FREE!!

Yelp
There have been so many good days at the Dixon. My family loves killing an afternoon here. There are not many places you can visit that have such nice grounds and artwork on display that are completely free to the public. How cool is that?!?!? I remember paying at some point, but not in several years. Gotta love free! You can just walk the gardens and discover the hidden trails and beautiful art throughout the gorgeous grounds. At every turn you will find beautiful trees, shrubs, and flowers in the spring and summer. There is a beautiful rose garden with tons of other flowing plants near the greenhouses as you walk in. It's always nice to see all of the bees grazing haphazardly. In the fall and winter months you can see a completely different environment with all of the fall foliage and occasional snow that we get here in the Mid South. Inside the main building are some seasonal changing art galleries with some permanent installations. The seasonal usually is collaborative and themed by a particular artist. The people are all very nice. I like the Park & Cherry concept inside. Neat little cafe. Lots of things to read. They have a nice event center out in the gardens with a covered party space. We have accidentally walked through some wedding photos and parties before. Ooops. So glad that it here for the Memphians to enjoy. I do appreciate the space. It's like you aren't even in the city when you are in the center of the park. It's so serene. '25 - 58/111

Yelp
I visited Dixon Gallery & Gardens in March 2025, approximately one month ago while visiting Memphis. Great museum and garden experience. They have beautiful world class art and sculpture on display. I particularly liked the Rodin sculpture outside of the gallery entrance. The gardens are lovely. I believe that this place had more spring flowering bulbs by a big margin than the nearby Memphis Botanical Garden. Very impressive. Easy to get to by car. Lots of parking. Beautiful grounds. Best of all it is free admission. Clean bathrooms inside the gallery and museum space. They have a cafe on site but I did not visit the cafe. I would come back here for sure if I lived in Memphis. Great place to visit while traveling in the Memphis area. Dixon Gallery & Gardens gets a solid five stars from me.

Yelp
Always enjoy taking a trip to the Dixon during Tulip Season. Checked out the Women's Exhibition the second weekend in March. What a wonderful surprise since I had only planned on looking at the blooming tulips all over the gardens. Ran into a past colleague and saw her great masterpieces in photography. Great job Jorden! Also saw a lovely lady-Miss Julie, showing us a variety of floral arrangements she created in a short amount of time. I even created some art in the interactive art section of the gallery. So cool. Had to stop by Park and Cherry Cafe for an Americano. That was a smooth of cup of espresso. The Frothy Monkey based in Nashville has awesome and exquisite coffee! Saw a former Snowden Student working in the cafe. So good to see students working in the real world. I love going to the gallery and gardens because there is always a sense of calm and peace. I am going back this week to see more tulips. I enjoy my membership and encourage others to join.

Yelp
This is a stellar art gallery. Because of that, when some relatives came into town and they wanted to visit the Dixon, I heartily agreed. We spent quite a bit of time examining the various paintings. As it turns out, my aunt had taken classes during the 1970-s from some of the California-based artists mentioned in some of the exhibits. (She is a juried sculptor.) After strolling through the beautiful and peaceful gardens, we retired to the indoor cafe, where we indulged in some delicious and well-crafted foods and beverages and discussed our observations of the museum. I've visited the Dixon several times over the course of the past four decades, and highly recommend it to anyone with even a slight interest in art. tip: Due to the continued generosity of local patrons, admission is now free.

Yelp
I have loved the Dixon gallery for years :) it is free for all visitors throughout 2024. My favorite is the residential exhibits. The wall colors, mantles, rugs, and furniture feel so rich and like I am stepping back in time. The garden is especially vibrant and peaceful to walk through

Yelp
We brought our kids here for the tulip gardens and it was so beautiful. Even took pictures for our daughter's first Easter pics.! We must go back when we have ample amount of time to browse around. The best part is that it's FREE..!!!

Yelp
I went here to get some quiet time to myself, but it is also a wonderful place for families, dates, or friend groups! The grounds are beautiful and it is FREE year-round.

Yelp
I do not leave reviews but this place is racist. They racial profile so i do not recommend coming here if you are hispanic/poc. we were asked to leave as our bridal attire was "inappropriate." We tried asking if we could accommodate by removing certain pieces of clothing. We paid $150 only to look too "bridaly" by Rachel the manager and the other manager did not care. We paid for the engagement/bridal category. From the moment we walked in we felt a weird vibe as it was white majority and felt as we were racially targeted by the manager. Apparently this happens to other people because of their cultures wedding attire. If its free admission why would they even care when we booked and she asked if we were booked. we said yes. She asked us to leave and we left. nobody else had to leave and everyone i saw was white. which is really crazy.

Yelp
It is definitely worth seeing, especially while admission remains free! The gardens were unique and enjoyable, providing about 30 minutes to an hour for most (depending on speed and admiring time). The gallery was especially quaint, as only one exhibit (of a maximum of two) was on display; with that said, the artist's work was wonderful. The gallery also includes a coffee shop to get refreshments and at least one friendly cat prowls the gardens.

Yelp
I was able to visit the Dixon Gallery and Gardens today while at a private event. Our group focused on the Black Artist in America and the paintings were beautiful yet amazing. I loved how the focus is set on the Great Depression up until the Civil Rights. We were told to expect two more exhibits (2023, 2025) that'll provide more insight into Black America. I can't wait to be able to view it! I did take a few photos but wanted to be respectful and live in the moment of these wonderful paintings. Being that admission is free through the rest of the year (possibly longer) I will definitely return to view more exhibits and the gardens!

Yelp
Very wonderful exhibit and the gardens are beautiful on a sunny day. I imagine it's more exciting during summer months when the plants can get the most sunlight. All areas may not be wheelchair accessible as an FYI. They serve food here as well but only lunch, which I think ends at 2 or 3 pm.

Yelp
Terrific art and cafe. The menu at the cafe stands out for deliciousness and reasonable prices. Been to this gallery twice so far. Love to see the gardens change through the seasons. Don't miss the permanent collection. The current Breck exhibit is exquisite. So sad he committed suicide. His art lives on.

Yelp
This was my first time visiting the Museum part of the Dixon Gallery & Gardens and I must say it was PHENOMENAL!!! The art work was just out of this world. It is a beautiful must see place located in the midst of beautiful and serene gardens. The staff members are very enthusiastic and welcoming. You can tell they take great pride in the work that they do. The gift shop and the cafe is also an extra bonus that makes the experience one to remember. I delighted in a tasty danish and peppermint mocha...they both were awesome! The thing I love most about the Dixon is that they feature a variety of Artist and their artwork. Currently, they are showcasing Isabelle de Borchgrave: Fashioning Art from Paper. It will run from October 15, 2017 - January 7, 2018. Be sure to stop by and support this beautiful and historic museum my fellow Memphians and visitors.

Yelp
I've been to Memphis several times, but this past weekend I visited the Dixon for the very first time. And I really enjoyed the experience! The gardens aren't huge, but they're very nice, and there are lots of tables to sit and enjoy the gardens. But the gallery was lovely. Right now, they have two exhibits on abstract expressionism: "Abstract Expressionism: A Social Revolution, Selections from the Haskell Collection" and "Friedel Dzubas: The Ira A. Lipman Family Collection" (both through January 5, 2020). I haven't had many opportunities to see such modern exhibits at museums, and I really enjoyed both exhibits. In addition to those temporary exhibits, the gallery has a permanent collection area, a small area that displays art by local artists, and a small cafe and shop. I recommend going when there is an exhibit you're interested in (because the permanent collection is very small), but I thought the $7 admission for adults was very fair and our visit very enjoyable overall. I'd certainly go back when I'm next in Memphis to see their next temporary exhibits! Lovely place to visit in Memphis!
google avatar

Yelp
Dixon Gallery & Gardens have a number of excellent exhibits indoors and well-kept grounds for a leisurely stroll outside. At a $7 admission price for adults it is completely reasonable for the amount of things you get to see. Inside the galleries they have a desk where you can get additional information on the gallery and specific collections. Their permanent collections include fine art and decorative art. There is also a small gift shop. The gallery is housed inside of the home that belonged to a couple with the last name of Dixon who built the house in the 1940s. As we came here this Summer the roses weren't doing too well in the garden but I could imagine how remarkable they look in Spring. We spent most of our time indoors (in the air conditioning of course) looking at all the collections. One of the first things we saw was a pewter collection which was something I've never seen in a gallery before. There were all kinds of plates, decorate tableware and silverware. Another collection of decorative art we saw is the German porcelain which included all kinds of cute little figurines. The front rooms are typical of any gallery and the current exhibition was "Power & Piety: Spanish Colonial Art". There were some interesting pieces but this exhibition wasn't particularly something I wanted to see. The French Impressionist paintings (including one from Claude Monet!) were among my favorite things to see. When you enter the gallery and turn right it is towards the end of this wing in a small room. The back two rooms past the Monet painting is are stunning as they are decorated in an elegant style reminiscent of who I imagine the Dixon family kept the home. For a cultural outing in a great atmosphere I would recommend coming here. It was one of the highlights of our day trip in Memphis and we were very glad we visited.

Yelp
Attendant in booth at entrance was wonderful and friendly What beautiful grounds!!! We went right in when they opened on Free Museum Day on Saturday and had beautiful weather! Yelp
My daughter held her wedding ceremony last Saturday at the Dixon..ceremony and reception. It could not have been. More perfect! The grounds were fabulous and gorgeous a d the wedding planner and all vendors worked seamlessly with the Dixon management. It was perfection! This mother of the bride had to do nothing but enjoy her daughters special day! I highly recommend the Dixon as a venue for weddings andor event!

Yelp
So this is a bit of a weird review, because it's not for the Dixon Gardens b/c I didn't see much of that apart from the entrance (which was beautiful with butterflies and flowers dancing in the breeze) because I only came for food truck Friday and that's all I experienced and it was awesome! Entrance to the gardens is free during food truck Friday's, but since I had to get back to work, I didn't take advantage of that. So I have to say, it was absolutely worth the 20min drive from my work in Collierville (so 40 Mins in total) to go here, for a Friday lunch when you aren't in a super rush to get back to work meetings. I allocated 1.5hrs for this lunch, and it came in at 1h38m, and I definitely plan to return (not every Friday, but absolutely as many as is reasonably feasible). Plenty of parking when we got there and the day I came I had the choice of Central BBQ, a taco truck and MEM Pops. After paying for the food, there's lots of tables under trees and little nooks and crannies to sit and eat within the gardens environs. I loved the break from the usual workday monotony, and the atmosphere made me feel heaps more grounded so I actually went back to work feeling super energized and refreshed. Absolutely recommend and like Arnie says, "will be back!" Note: #202 of Yelp 100 challenge for 2016

Veronica X.

Yelp
Not gonna lie, I am not an artsy person and I tend to find full-blown art museums overwhelming and often exhausting. Small galleries like Dixon are a nice alternative. I think everyone can find a piece or two eye-catching and worth looking up close. In pleasant weather, I find the well-kept garden more enjoyable than the gallery itself. Your eyes will thank you for the lush green. I am glad Dixon is here.

Yelp
One of my favorite places in Memphis! You can get an "internet" membership that costs $20. You don't get all of the benefits of a full membership, but you get free entry so it is worth it if you like to just pop in on your lunch break or on a Sunday afternoon and browse the art and gardens. The old home that houses the art is so beautiful and there is something to see in the gardens all year round, though spring is the best time to see the gardens. They always have a traveling exhibit and I have never been disappointed by one. The permanent exhibits are beautiful as well! They also have food truck Friday's where you can come grab lunch from a food truck and enjoy lunch in the gardens. This is one of my favorite places in Memphis - it is delightful and charming, especially for an art lover!

Yelp
So I've been to the Dixon Gallery & Garden three times now. I'm surprised it has taken me this long to write a review. The first two times was for Food Truck Friday's which is awesome and is still going on until September 25 from 11:30AM-1:30PM (just look up the schedule on the Dixon website). I have tried the Millie's Garden Food Truck & the Say Cheese Food Truck, which were both pretty good. Also, just a note, during Food Truck Fridays it is free to tour the gardens, which I thought was an added bonus. Now as of right now the gallery is under renovations, but the gardens are beautiful. It is just something that everyone should see. I greatly enjoyed walking around the Dixon and seeing all the beauty that is there. It is so peaceful and calming. They have little tables and benches all around that you can just sit, relax and enjoy the scenery. On my most recent visit to the Dixon, I was able to see the Jun Kaneko Sculptures. These sculptures are throughout the gardens and were like nothing I have ever seen before. They were just so different and interesting to see. Overall, I suggest visiting the Dixon for a relaxing day filled with beautiful scenery and interesting art pieces! Also, definitely try to attend Food Truck Friday's for great food!!!

Yelp
The Dixon is absolutely my favorite spot in Memphis. Thoughtful exhibitions I can always learn from but more importantly enjoy, and gorgeous gardens. Being a member (with reciprocal benefits) means you get into lots of museums in other cities too- such a win!

Yelp
Attended the Dixon after dark trivia night. Really enjoyed it. $14 to get in, but the experience is fun. Customer service is great and the questions are fun. Will definitely be attending it again. Better bring your A game of you want to beat Team JoeAsh. They have other nightly events throughout the week if you follow them on facebook. Nice little cafe and gift shop. Really looking forward to going back and seeing the exhibits doting the day. There are 2000 pieces to look at, and Renoir is the most highly represented artist. (Both were trivia questions. )

Yelp
This was the highlight of my trip. It was such a beautiful, quaint little place. Plus I'm military and got in for free! Great little paths and beautiful flowers. Also so beautiful art in the house on site that I didn't know was there. Highly recommend. It's a very nice, peaceful place.

Yelp
Very disappointing experience with the Dixon this morning. After paying my admission fee and touring through the preliminary art down the hall, I went to enter the gallery and was stopped and told that I could not enter with a backpack. I was confused because I'm a 34 year old woman who hasn't worn a backpack since high school... I realized she was referred to my "backpack style purse". I offered to let the security guard search through my purse if that would make her more comfortable and she declined saying they just weren't allowed, period, and as I tried to speak again, she interrupted me and told me I could speak with the front desk. Upon doing so, the front desk attendant reiterated that I could either put it a the locker or leave it at the desk. I was shocked. What do women do who are carrying purses? Why was my purse any different? Because it had two straps?? I literally had chapstick, my wallet, and my cell phone. I'd been polite and quiet the 10 minutes I'd be there. I was so confused, and honestly, reasonable or not, hurt. Why was I not told my purse was not allowed before I paid money to enter the establishment? Rules are put in place for safety, one would think, and I am not a person who breaks rules to be reckless or careless. I understand rules and their place in society. But. You need to draw the line at unreasonable requests of paying patrons who are simply trying to enjoy a morning browsing art. This was such a turn off and so sad to me. I've enjoyed the Dixon for years, but this morning was so upsetting, I doubt I'll return. Oh, and, interestingly, as I left, there were forty or more high school students all with actual backpacks on combing the gardens and waiting to enter the gallery. I guess my tiny, flowery bag was more of a threat.

Yelp
Great exhibit at the Dixon gallery and gardens. Had the pleasure of receiving a tour from the Director who told such great stories during the tour. I would recommend checking it out.

Yelp
I really can only speak on the outside of the Dixon gallery and the event that was going on (Food Truck Fridays). This was my first time ever going here. The outside is gorgeous so peaceful and relaxing. The scenery alone would make a person visit over and over. Hopefully, one day I take the time out to walk around and explore. I originally heard about Food Truck Fridays from a fellow yelper. Thinking that it was a one time only event, I just thought I missed it. My friend that is on yelp as well mentioned it some days ago and found out the event location wasn't too far from our job. It was pretty cool to do something different on Fridays for lunch. On Fridays we usually go to a sit down restaurant. Some of the vendors were slower than others. I stood in line for Three sisters and a truck, but they seemed very unprepared, so I got in line for Gourmet Grillers. I'm very familiar with them. I ordered the mac & cheese pig, which is macaroni and cheese with pulled pork and bbq sauce on toasted sour dough bread. It was yummy to my tummy!
google avatar

Susan L.

Yelp
It's a former private estate with 17 acres of gardens. The house - which is not at all pretentious - has a small but very nice art collection (mostly Impressionists) and the grounds are very pretty. If you have an AAA membership, admission is two-for-one.
google avatar

Dave R.

Yelp
Highly recommended. The curated exhibit of Meissen porcelain is wonderful. Great overview with wonderful specimens. Don't miss the pewter collection, nicely done and very unique. The French Impressionists collection is a good overview -- not much depth, but hits samples of most of the key artists. Can't say enough about the gardens. Well laid out, nicely tended, properly signef. Really enjoyed the woodland gardens. Perfect on a hot summer day.

Krislyn B.

Yelp
While the venue is beautiful, I was disappointed with the lack of masking when I attended a wedding. I was hopeful when I saw signs about masks being required. However, most guests were not wearing masks, despite the fact that the employees were. When you are asking your employees to wear masks to protect others but do not enforce the same for guests, it may be representative of how you value your staff. Do better, Dixon.

Yelp
This has been on my list of must-see places to see in Memphis for a few months now, and I finally got to visit over the weekend. It made for a relaxing and peaceful Saturday. The garden itself isn't that big, and I expected to see more flowers/shrubbery. I did like that there were a ton of benches scattered throughout the gardens so you can just plop down to people and bird watch. I think I spent almost 2 hours just watching people. Oddly enough, the best part was watching the different birds that were everywhere (and I don't even know the first thing about bird watching). The gallery is moderately sized, not too big either, but enjoyable. I visited when they had the "Scent and Symbolism: Perfumed Objects and Images" theme, and it was pretty fun. I don't care much for contemporary/modern art, but they had a good assortment of different exhibits for everyone to enjoy. Tip: visit when it's the first full weekend of the month to get free admission for BOfA card members!

Yelp
I have been a member of The Dixon for years through young at art. It's $150 a year for a couple, reasonable enough that even when I've been single I've kept this level and brought guests. For YAA there are functions through our the year, enough so that you will get to see each exhibit. Some exhibits I have liked more than others but its always interesting to see. In the spring, summer and early fall they have food trucks come out on Fridays. A beautiful place to each lunch! I also love the bi-annual symphony in the gardens and the annual Christmas trees lighting. I've taken several of the garden workshops and always left with a nice completed piece. More workshops please! Basically, this place has something for the entire family and membership is money well spent. Oh and the gift shop, I'd be remiss if I didn't mention how awesome it is. Great place for unique gifts and just a little happy for yourself.
google avatar

Ciara N.

Yelp
Blah blah blah, great art exhibits; blah blah blah, really nice garden; blah blah blah, permanent collection of Some Dead Rich Guy, blah blah blah. It's a museum. It's got art. Enough of that. Here's what counts: Art On Tap in September. Here's what it is: A bunch of young, drunk Memphians acting like they're fifteen, chugging beer (oh, sorry, I mean 'enjoying sampling microbrewery flavor from around the world'), and being let loose around priceless works of art until they drop (the art or the people, whichever comes first). Faaaaaan.... tabulous.
google avatar

Ashley H.

Yelp
Of all of the museums in Memphis, I think this one is our favorite. The bonus is the beautiful gardens outside. The double bonus is Food Truck Fridays during the months of May and June! The different exhibits are always interesting, as are the property's own art and silver collections and furniture. A couple of the paintings even have pit bulls in them, so of course, those are my favorites. If you're not keeping up with The Dixon Gallery and Gardens exhibits, you're missing out!
google avatar

Katie D.

Yelp
I love this place. It has gorgeous art. I specifically came to see the temporary Memphis-Milano exhibit and was not disappointed. It was spaced over several rooms, taking up quite a bit of space. The whole exhibit took maybe 45 minutes to one hour to see. It was definitely worth the visit, even if that was all you came to see. The permanent collections are also fantastic. If you're a fan of Impressionist artwork, then this will definitely be up your alley. It's a gorgeous art period so in my opinion, it's not to be missed. Oh, and the grounds are wonderful, too. They're great especially in warmer weather. You can wander around for hours, looking at the gorgeous landscape. There's lots of trees to provide plenty of shade, helping to keep things cool. The gardens themselves are gorgeous, full of beautiful flowers. There are also sculptures to look at. If you want to go on a budget, visit on Tuesdays or Saturday mornings. All day on Tuesdays, you can pay whatever you can. Saturdays from 10-noon, admission to the entire property is free. However, even on other days, the admission is not expensive. It is $7 for adults, $5 for students and seniors, and $3 for children. Not a bad price to pay at all for what can turn into at least a half day's entertainment.

Tanya T.

Yelp
I love the Dixon. Sure, the permanent collection is impressive and the exhibitions are always well thought out and of great interest to the arts community (Rodrigue's Blue Dog is a favorite), but there is so much more to this historical place than just the beautiful Impressionist paintings. First of all, the gardens are lush, and there are 17 acres of them! Dixon horticulturists often host gardening programs or lunch & learns to share their knowledge with local enthusiasts. The commitment to educations spills over into the many activities and on-site classes that the Dixon hosts for younger fans, including the children's Mini-Masters program and the school outreach program Art to Grow. Another fantastic Dixon group? Young at Art, the young adult group for 25-40 year olds. While there are plenty of educational opportunities to be found at the Dixon, they know how to have fun too! Attend one of their many great exhibition openings, an Art After Dark party featuring local bands and the famous Art on Tap celebration which offers samples of brews from all over the planet. All of this and free admission on Saturdays from 10am to noon? Wow.

Yelp
Went to see the Rodin exhibit before it leaves. It was pretty extensive and I am very glad to be able to see this type of exhibit in Memphis. It only took a little over an hour to walk through the exhibits and we spent a little while more exploring some of the gardens, but since it is winter, there isn't too much to look at right now (but in the spring and summer the gardens are beautiful) and it was also raining, which kept us from walking around longer. I look forward to seeing the next traveling exhibit and also going to the Food Truck Fridays when they begin again (in the summer). I also appreciate that they also exhibit local artists.

Yelp
To be quite frank, this place gives me the creeps. Something about the smell and the house just doesn't do it for me. But outside of the creepy factor, this is a fantastic institution. There's nothing like a free art showing, and every Saturday morning, the Dixon offers just that. With a Degas in the permanent collection, this is no shabby neighborhood art installation; I have seen some legitimately beautiful pieces here that I would otherwise never have been able to see in person. The grounds are gorgeous in the summer and the gallery hosts new traveling exhibits all the time ranging from the Impressionists all the way to bronzes from the Harlem renaissance. When I was old enough to drive, I used to take my brother and sister to La Baguette on Saturday mornings and then we would go see the free art exhibition, and without this, I don't know that they ever would have been exposed to such high culture. Regardless of being creepy, this place is a real Memphis institution and part of the reason I can proudly say, I'm from Memphis, where the culture is home grown and not made for tourists.

Yelp
Loved it. Having a quick day trip and want to go somewhere to get your culture on? This is it! They have gardens AND art! What more do you need, really, you want more? That's just selfish. The gallery has some really beautiful pieces with portraits, a beautiful antique jewelry collection and fancy pottery. It was nice to take a walk through the gardens too!! The botanical gardens are across the street if you need more flowers.

Yelp
A great museum and garden. When we were there they had a special jewelry exhibit that was outstanding. The interesting feature was that many of the jewelry pieces also had the designers picture plan used as the pattern for the production of the jewelry piece. The drawings of the plans were works of art on their own. There is also a beautiful ceramic room. There also was some current pieces from local artists who were influenced by the Dixon----interesting. The walk through the gardens was lovely.

Yelp
This is unquestionally one of Memphis' best kept secrets! A true gem. I've been going regularly to the Dixon for the past year. They work really hard to have world class exhibits. I've seen 4 different exhibits, which is highly unusually as most art museums only have 2 or 3 shows a year. . Every Tuesday and Sunday they have guided tours at no extra cost. Right now they have an exhibit titled Scents and Symbolism they brought from Japan. I was lucky to meet the owners of this beautiful and very rare collection of perfume bottles and art. Some date back to the 1700s. The gardens are beautiful too and they have guided tours. I joined and am really enjoying the classes. The Lunch and Munch on Wednesdays is very informative! I pick up a salad or sandwich from their small restaurant inside. I think the food trucks are only there one day a week.

Yelp
Disappointing. The art gallery is rather small and everything is from the same era. I was hoping to see more artwork from vary time periods and styles. They had a family day but there really weren't enough activities for younger children. The garden area will be lovely in the spring and is the best part. Maybe I'm just spoiled by the art in NYC I grew up with.

Yelp
We visited the Dixon Galley and Gardens on our last day in Memphis, it was well worth renting a car for. The permanent collection is shown in the lovely home. I remember walking into the dining room and seeing the chagall in the corner, there's a soutine, cezanne, all displayed simply. It looks like a home where art was loved and cared for.

Yelp
I always like Dixon. I used to come regularly when I lived in Memphis. Interesting exhibits, great gardens. I attended a lecture on ferns which was excellent. I would have given 5 star except the gift shop basically doesn't exist anymore. It was an excellent shop and I bought many things there over the years.
