We had passed a crowded Dixon's for a few months and decided to give it a try. My first sign of a problem was the serving system. When I saw those numbers on stands on the tables, I should have gotten the hint. Then ordering...the young man was very friendly and knew what he was doing. The wall with the menu on it didn't have much of a description but I opted for the boneless fried chicken with slaw and house fries and my husband had the haddock with slaw, carrots & house fries. We also both ordered cherry vanilla soda.
Next: Went to use the "ladies" room (they must be unisex...no problem with me) and as soon as I walked in, the urine smell was overpowering. There was urine on the floor around the toilet. I double-coated the seat with toilet paper and tried my best not to touch it. Gross.
Returned to our table to find "soda" in plastic cups over ice. No. Sorry. That was NOT soda. It was watered down, maraschino cherry juice with absolutely no fizz whatsoever. Okay. Maybe the food will be worth it.
Wrong again. My "boneless fried chicken" was obviously double (or triple) fried....seemed to be left over and refried. The pieces on the tray (seriously, no dishes?) were big....until I cut into the fried (very dark brown) coating. The boneless chicken was a boneless thigh, about a 1/2 inch thick, COVERED in paprika. There was seriously almost an inch of space between the chicken itself and the coating. I don't know how they did that!! The chicken was dry and hard to cut. Inedible. But I was starving and had the lesser-of-the-two-evils piece. I tasted the coating once and once only. Hard, over-fried....inedible. Seriously, the piece of chicken was half the size of my palm and flat, dry, and overspiced with paprika. No need for that much paprika on ANYTHING.
The house cut fries. Good but COVERED, again, in paprika. I have a sensitive stomach and could not eat them. Way too much. Again, no need for that at all on fries. The menu board behind the cash register did not mention all of this PAPRIKA!
The slaw was, meh, probably the best thing on the tray....but far from the best slaw I've ever had.
Now, my husband, on the other hand, enjoyed the haddock. Not the fries, not the slaw, not the soda, not the carrots as they were hard and very undercooked...not even steamed enough if that's how they were prepared. Far from "al dente:....just hard. He only enjoyed the haddock.
We ditched our trip to Woodstock as I began to have pains in my stomach after we left from, I'm going to assume, the paprika I managed to eat. The next morning was worse.
Of my 68 (almost 69) years on Earth, this is in the top 5 of the worst restaurants I've ever visited. Too bad....it looks like it has potential but a lot needs to be fixed. We won't be back. Too many excellent options in Woodstock.
In case anyone cares...I-Hop in Brooklyn in 1976 was THE worst. LOL.
Dang, I hate leaving bad reviews. It makes me sad.
