The Best Vietnamese Restaurants in Oakland | Eater SF

"Central Vietnamese cuisine is the focus at Đà Nẵng Quán, so you already know the bun bo Hue — the spicy beef noodle soup — is going to be good. Other regional favorites include banh beo (chewy rice cakes topped with ground beef, shrimp, and fish sauce), bun hen (noodles with baby clams and fermented shrimp paste), and banh xeo (egg crepes with crispy edges)." - Janelle Bitker

Google
my Vietnamese friend brought me here, and it was a totally new experience for me. I’m used to just getting different kinds of pho at Vietnamese places. so happy to discover that I love bánh bèo and canh chua (Vietnamese sour soup)!

Google
Super delicious! Quick service! Very stuffy and humid as expected. We came here for our lunch break hour and were delighted by our meals. Ordered the large bun bo hue and medium pho dac biet. The large was very generous and filling. Both broths were tasty and and mostly balanced. We felt the food was fairly priced. This was my first time trying Huyet/blood cake and was surprised I liked it. Wasn't gelatinous like I thought. Their tripe is SUPER good. It had flavor instead of just being there for texture, and it vaguely reminded me of menudo. Also ordered a sugarcane juice and ice thai tea. Both were super delicious and fresh. Definitely worth noting that they fill the entire cup with ice and poured the beverages below ice level which is something you might not expect for $6 They had great condiment options at the table but definitely need to clean then as they were super dirty. There was a rush that came I'm around 1PM which makes sense because the food is great. Definitely will be coming back to try some more!

Delicious pho, bun bo hue, and banh beo! My new go-to spot for Central Vietnamese food 😋😋

Google
Love coming here to try their large selection of dishes. They offer a wide variety of noodles, rice dishes, etc. It’s a local owned place and the aunties serving and cooking are a testament for that

Google
Pretty good Vietnamese restaurant. Their dry Hủ Tiếu Nam Vang tastes almost the same as the original from Vietnam. I can said that this is one of the best Hu Tieu Nam Vang I've ever tried yet in the bay area. Their Bun Mam is also great, according to my friend. They have some spice add-on trays like pickle chily pepper and garlic which is super good. Price is okay. The employees are super friendly. Would definitely com back.

Google
I like this place I updated is under mew owner and she is super kind. The good things is several dishes, stay and Bun Bo Hue still delicious. . They are so nice and friendly. I ❤️ come here . After 1 year I back again.

Google
Da Nang Quan is my go to restaurant to get my Bun Mam fix. I feel this noodle soup dish is a severely underrated that's packed with hella flavor from the fermented fish based broth that may be an acquired taste to lots but for me, definitely up there with the likes of bun bo hue, bun rieu or pho. Nicknamed as the Vietnamese gumbo, it comes packed with fish, shrimp, pork slices and crispy pork belly. Da Nang Quan now makes it on the sweeter side but adding lime and peppers calms that sweetness down with plenty of veggies and makes it just about perfect.

Google
One of the better restaurant in Oakland, the name is taken from a famous city in Central Vietnam. They specialized in dishes from that region. Small, cozy and the food is as authentic as it can be. I ordered "Bun bo Hue" (Spicy noodle soup), I would say it's quite tasty. Credit cards accepted.

Yelp
Hello. Had a great experience eating here. Went in the morning. Got there right after they opened at 8:30. They were still setting up, but were very welcoming. I ordered the sugar cane drink, as well as the fresh coconut drink. I was helped by someone that did not speak English, so I just pointed at the menu items. I was actually brought the sugar cane drink and fresh squeezed orange juice. While my order was incorrect both were very good. So fresh and amazing flavor. I had the oxtail and rare steak soup to eat. I really love oxtail and wanted to try it prepared differently than I am used to having it. It was good. The oxtail was not quite as tender as I like it, but the flavor was very good. Overall, a very positive experience. I will definitely eat here in the future.

Yelp
Coming from Orange County, I've been looking for solid Vietnamese food other than pho in East Bay. I was pleasantly surprised to discover this place not far from where I live! The Bun Bo Hue and Banh Canh are yummy! The portion sizes are generous and pricing is reasonable for what you get. The ladies here are friendly and service is quick. It's lowkey and often quiet when I visit but the restaurant is spacious and well kept. Definitely have become a regular here and would recommend for anyone searching for a variety of Vietnamese dishes! Next time, I'd like to try their banh beo.

Yelp
good bun bo hue with fresh ballz. I prefer more lemongrassy fragrant oil on top but still solid. well packed for delivery. Would.

Yelp
Love the banh beo and bun bo hue. This is my go to viet spot. Very thankful to have this here so I don't have to drive to San Jose all the time.

Yelp
It was my first time here and I was pleasantly surprised. Solid bun rieu! It's flavorful and they're not stingy with it. I appreciate how fresh the herbs are as well. There's pickled shallots on the table as well but I found them on the sweeter side. Still great though. I must come back to try their BBH!

Yelp
SPICY AF!!! One of the most legit bun bo hue in oakland, with the flavor and herbs (provided bean sprouts, cabbage, ram rang, thai basil and mint). Also, legit has a pork knuckle and steamed pork cake instead of sliced pork belly. Comes with beef shank, blood cube and house beef meatballs. Solid fresh spring rolls, the fried ones are good but I have had better filling. Overall, spicy but amazing.

Yelp
My favorite Vietnamese restaurant on the East Bay. I'm from San Jose, so I'm using to eating tons of good Vietnamese food. This place is authentic and everything is delicious. This is one of my favorite places to get Bun Rieu besides Pho Dao in San Jose. Da Nang Quan Bun Rieu is packed with flavor and comes with so many types of herbs. Most places that serve Bun Rieu just give you cabbage, mint, and lime. Their Bun Bo Hue is pretty good too. The area is sketchy, so be careful where you park.
google avatar

Evan W.

Yelp
The best Bun Bo Hue in the bay! Don't bother driving to San Jose, this is the spot! $16 for a medium, but the flavors and meat are worth a shot. When they say spicy, they mean SPICY!
google avatar

Yelp
Got takeout from here after a run around the lake. My first time having mi quang outside of Vietnam, was not disappointed. Everything in the dish has great flavor, and the noodles were great texture even after the 15 min drive home. Banh Xeo was also nice, and they are generous with the fresh herbs and veg on the side. Would take out again.

Yelp
I find a new place for bun mam Soc Trang in Oakland! Thr owner lady was very friendly and flexible. My mom asked for more crispy bbq pork and less boiled one. She said she could do only bbq pork if my mom wanted. Bun mam broth was clear but rich of flavor. My niece ordered Bun Dau Mam Tom. It was yummy too. I got Banh Xeo Mien Trung which was filled with pork belly, beann sprouts, and slices of white onion. The only minus point was dipping sauce of banh xeo. It was not authentically central area (mien trung) mixed fish sauce as I expected. It tasted as southern version. I guessed we were the first customers this morning. The restaurant was clean and nice. My clothes didn't smell food when we left. It's been at least 3 years I was back. I'll come more often to try other dishes from a menu book.

Yelp
My go-to for bun bo hue and bun rieu. It's delicious, and you get a lot of fresh condiments, mint, sprouts, etc. I'm not sure why some of these Asian restaurants are giving steamed sprouts, but sometimes that does not go with these soups or pho. Perhaps to preserve sprouts that are going bad??! Not Danan Quan tho! Great portions and tasty broths! My kiddo likes the pho too. Highly recommend.

Yelp
WHEN: Tue @11am This place is wonderfully unique. My family is from a central Vietnamese city called Đà Nẵng, and this spot specializes in dishes from that area. It's not another pho shop folks! Vietnam isn't just bowls of pho. There's so much wonderful variety here and it's GOOD. If my family from Đà Nẵng says it's good, it's GOOD. PARKING: if you don't find metered parking right in front, you may find some around the corner for free spots. There was a good amount because we came early around 11am. Around noon it gets busier. Here's what I had: BÁNH BÈO NHÂN TÔM THỊT BA CHĨ (4) - $11 Little Steamed rice cakes with shrimp and pork toppings. Comes in 4 tiny dishes with fish sauce, which isn't enough for a meal. You'll want at least 10, so I suggest splitting this amongst friends so each person can try one. The steamed rice cakes are soft and the toppings were plentiful. It's also toooed with peanuts and pork rhines, and the pork and dry shrimp toppings makes this little treat full of wonderful textures! Give it a try! BÚN BÒ HUẾ - $16 (Medium) Spicy beef and noodle noodle soup with rice vermicelli with all sorts of meat toppings: Pork knuckle, beef shank, Viet sausage slices, Pork blood curd, and all the fresh herbs. I appreciate the waiter asking if pork knuckle and pork blood was okay cuz apparently those items aren't popular. I also appreciate how I was able to adjust the amount of spice level cuz I'm a whimp like that. Overall a solid bowl but its such a huge serving for me (it's only $1 more for a large).Oh and it comes with fermented shrimp past on the side to add as I like and I really like it...it's like adding umami to it. MI QUANG - $16 My entire family ordered this so I think its a popular one. This dish is served with rice noodles that have been "dyed" with turmeric. It includes pork, chicken, and shrimp with little broth but lots of fresh herbs and lettuce. We asked for extra broth because we like our noodles soupy. It was pretty darn good. There's a lot of wonderful things going on in here and you just have to try it for yourself. I've been thinking about this place a lot since I've been here, and I really hope to come back. There's so many wonderful options and the staff are all quite friendly!

Yelp
my parents recently took me here to try out their pho and appetizers! highly recommend! their #5 was like vietnamese palabok (filipino shrimp dish) but with peanuts! super delicious service was nice and helpful for the area, the ambiance was nice with plentiful seating! i also liked their soup, it was a bowl filled with comforting hugs!

Yelp
Delicious food. It's hard to find good bun mam and this place offers so one of the best tasting bun mam along with many authentic Vietnamese noodle soups ( bun rieu, bun mang vịt, bún bò Huế ). Highly recommend.

Yelp
3.5 for me, Would come back. Love their pickled shallots on the table. I love that they give rice paper with the banh xeo, cause that's how I enjoy eating it at home. It just holds better than just a lettuce wrap way and less messy. The banh xeo was crispy and came out super hot, had shrimp and pork and a lot of beans sprouts. The com dac biet is good but we got too full to finish it. Next time, I'll probably just order this instead and hold off on the banh xeo. Since both are heavy meals and fulfilling. I had a baby with me so it was hard to eat banh xeo while juggling the infant and giving her food. The pho can use a little more noodles, the meat was soft but not super soft, had a pull to it. Their food is good but on the pricey side, feels really home-y. The older lady handing the food is very sweet. Meter parking outside, There's a Viet cafe in the corner. There's always cop cars driving around or parking in front.

Yelp
Something was off the moment we walked in. The building was empty from the normal crowd we're greeted with (families in the corner, children, hungover young adults, elder's gossiping, running fresh produce from street into kitchen, etc.), staff is different and even the plants are different. The pricing is a different story and doesn't inform the customers on their *new* pricing model. There was always one person there that spoke english so our order this time was a challenge. The menu is very different and I couldn't find my basic "#21 - Medium" meal. Even after pointing at the menu item I wanted, they came back with another server and she just gave me water, not the drink I wanted (Salty Lemonade). I ordered a noodle soup (pho) and went with a basic no frills option since we were only here to grab a "usual" after a night out previously. The soup was lukewarm, the veggie's that came with didn't have 1/2 the variety or portion from before (back early Feb during cold rainy weather) and the noodles were so soggy they broke apart before I had the chance to attempt to stir the noodles. My broth had gross CHUNKS OF SCUM everywhere, I only ate the noodles and little bit of meat, I didn't bother drinking the broth. After reading more recent reviews, there was a change in ownership but they kept the name and skeleton model of the previous one (tables, chairs where some are replaced with no matching chairs, bowls, etc.). My husband and I were disappointed in the direction this went and can't see ourselves coming back here any longer. Our mechanic tried to warn us that "it's not the same" but we gave it shot thinking maybe the prices went up but it really changed-changed. Name is still the same but it is no where near the same menu or food they used to serve.

Yelp
This place used to be a gem before they changed ownership. I remember coming here for one thing that you can't find anywhere in the bay besides San Jose: bún hến. My family also comes here to order other items on the menu line mì quảng, which is also solid here. The owner is also very gentle and friendly. I would've rated this place 4/5 I came by today and noticed the menu no longer had bún hến. I totally understand why they took it off the menu since the item is not as well known amongst customers who have been accustomed to eating your typical Vietnamese dish. So I ordered the chicken rice dish. The dish came out with 5-6 small, bony, and dry pieces of chicken. There was a heap amount of rice to the side. The disproportionate amount of rice to meat was noticeable. You could also tell the microwaved the sh* out of the chicken because of the microwave burn on the chicken skin. I politely asked the owner if she could replace the meat with more delectable pieces and she said that all the meat looked like this. But she was nice enough to say that she'll replace it with a different dish for me. I proceeded to order vermicelli dishes and she advised me to not order "dry" dishes because the meat would be dry regardless. I was so puzzled by this statement, why was all the meat in this restaurant dry? Any way, I ordered a pork vermicelli bowl to try my luck. The other ladies spoke loudly in the kitchen in Vietnamese about how I should just eat damn my rice dish. The vermicelli bowl came out. I took a bite of the meat and it was OVERLY seasoned with soy sauce. It was hard for me to eat because of how salty it was. I'm sad that I can no longer come back here to enjoy the food. I should've listened to my sister when she warned me a few months ago about the change in ownership and how the food went down in quality.

Yelp
This is a great hue style vietnamese restaurant! I appreciated the diversity in the menu, as most viet restaurants typically offer the main selection of pho and bun variations, but this had made hue dishes including bun bo hue, which was very tasty and came with a large portion and generous meat. My preference would have been the bun bo hue as it has a bit more flavor than the broth that comes with the duck salad dish.
google avatar

Verenice B.

Yelp
Omggg godly. I can't remember what the things I ordered were called. Not gonna lie, I was a little hesitate but I just ordered the things Vietnamese folks on these Yelp reviews said we're good and close to Vietnam style. Egg/crepe style food didn't sound like a great lunch... but holy hell. Tried it and it was so damn delicious. Loooooove all the spicy sauce sides. Can't wait to come back! My friend and I were in heaven.

Yelp
I've been waiting for them to reopen for a few weeks now and they're finally open... but under new ownership. The menu option has decreased and sadly their soup is not the same. Their Bun bo hue used to be good but now the flavor is lacking. The shrimp paste flavor is just not there anymore. They no longer have banh beo or banh xeo on their menu. Their Bun Mam Nuoc Leo is replaced with Bun Mam Soc Trang and it's okay but not as good. The saving grace was the chili garlic. The roasted pork in the soup is just okay as well whereas before it was my favorite part. Another thing is that the soup came out warm and not piping hot. The pho tai was mediocre as well and you can definitely find better broths at another place a few blocks away. Also, I don't know why but they didn't have thai basil for the pho... and had holy basil instead. One of the hostess/waitress is still here from the previous ownership but the two guys helping her were a little clueless. Hopefully they get better because she was holding it down. Overall, sadly, I won't be coming back anytime soon. It's really disappointing because this was my favorite Bun Mam place and my brother's Bun Bo Hue spot. I wish them luck.

Yelp
AMAZING! You definitely got to try this spot. Their service is really nice they always have a smile and are very helpful. I had no idea what to order since my go to is Pho but its lent and I cant eat meat so I wanted something different. I asked the lady in the front what does she have with shrimp or tofu and she gave me great recommendations. I had the shrimp spring rolls. These are definitely the best I've had perfectly filled and rolled and with that peanut sauce /crushed Thai chilis on the side AMAZING! I also ordered the Shrimp Banh Xeo. I had no idea what i was getting but oh boy was I amazed this was so delicious crispy and filled to perfection with just the right amount on bean sprouts and shrimp. They are also not stingy with the lettuce, herbs and sauce on the sides. It was a lot of food just for me, I over ordered since I didn't know but for 2 people I definitely recommend. Even ordering one or the other is the perfect lunch. I will say it is pricey but what food now a days isn't, so nothing to complain about. Overall 5 stars if I can give more I would !

Brianna M.

Yelp
i ordered a medium bun bo hue and it was absolutely delicious. it was better than the bun bo hue i've had at other places and portion size was big for the price ($15.50). the broth wasn't as spicy as i was anticipating for it to be, so i added a few of the provided chilies that were on the table (alongside pickled onion and other sauces!) and it was way spicier, which i loved. it actually had me sniffling a bit at times but the chili definitely enhanced the natural flavor of the broth. it was great. in terms of service, everything was good. they have a service fee if you pay with card, so try to pay with cash. the waitress was also pretty attentive. the ambience of the restaurant is nice, it was actually pretty quiet when we went. it's also pretty clean inside. overall, i enjoyed the meal and definitely plan to come here again sometime in the future.
google avatar

Vicky L.

Yelp
I forgot the name of this but it's was very very umami, warms the soul, and the toppings were tasty. There was a really thin slice of meat that was tender and tasty. The crispy pork belly was classic and flavorful. The whole bowl of noodle was a warm hug especially after a night of drinking. I will say it was a lot of fish sauce flavor more than normal. But I still enjoyed it. My friend got the hu tieu, it wasn't the most flavorful to me and the noodles were like regular pho noodles which isn't what I usually get in hu tieu. Overall I would come back for the bun dishes!
google avatar

Yelp
Bun Bo Hue or Bun Rieu? I thought I'd try a new spot when in Oakland. Bun Rieu 4/5 Bun Bo Hue 4/5 I thought both the Bun Bo Hue and Bun Rieu had a lot of flavors. I love how they have side condiments. The jalapenos and onion are soaked in vinegar for you to add to your dish. It reminds me of Vietnam. However, it was pretty on the expensive side.
google avatar

Loan D.

Yelp
I used to love this place. Every time I had visitors in town I would take them here for the Bun Mam Nước Leo it was the best in the Bay Area. I went yesterday to get some to-go. Seems like they might have new owners. The Bun Mam is not the same it has a significantly darker broth and does not taste the same. Honestly it sucks compared to the Bun Mam they used to have before. The Bun Rieu is also not that great either. I drove here from the Peninsula just to have their Bun Mam and was sadly disappointed.

Yelp
brb, my mouth is watering Okay, back and with a dry keyboard. A friend and I came here for lunch since we were craving noodles. She's a foodie, loves Vietnamese food and recommended the BBH. I got BBH and also ordered their rice cakes to share. Two words: NO REGRETS. The BBH is absolutely delicious and hit the spot. The rice cakes taste WAY better than they look (in the pictures on the menu) and sound. I kept eating even though I was already starting to get full. Everyone here is friendly, works quickly and I would recommend this as a great place for lunch, especially with colder temperatures now.

Yelp
Just tried out their bun rieu ($16 for a large) today, and it was quite good. It doesn't look like they used any real crab in the meat ball for it, because I did not get any crustacean allergic reaction to them at all. The meat ball or supposedly crab cake was good, it have a mild crustation flavor in the back ground, and the overall flavor was good. The bun rieu came with cooked tomatoes, and a good side of condiments herb that included shiso, fish mint, lady's thumb (Persicaria) banana blossom, and lettuce so it's relatively on the healthier side, but then most Vietnamese noodle soup come with a good side of herb, oh and the lime juice add a good bright flavor as well. It also came with a nicely cooked porkbelly slice that have a good meat, fat, and skin ratio, giving it a good bite. Not as good as bun bo hue an nam in San Jose, but best I could find so far in Oakland. There was also some fried tofu, but I didn't care for it as much as the pork blood cube. The only thing that was missing was a nice pig feet with a good amount of skin on it. Cooked to tender and perfection would be nice. It also came with a side of fermented shrimp paste that add an extra funk and umami flavor to the broth if you mix it in. I also add some fresh minced bird eye chili in which brighten up the broth flavor even more. Price seem right in this economy (around 20 buc after tax n tip for a bowl of noodle soup). Portion was huge. Flavor was definitely on point

Yelp
Food: 5/5 Service: 5/5 Price: 4.5/5 Atmosphere: 5/5 Delicious, clean, and kind service! The bun bo hue was really good. The area was small but cute and it felt very clean which is a big plus for authentic bun Bo hue . Will be coming back!

Yelp
surprisingly clean and refreshing interior... especially located in the shoddy Oakland little saigon area. authentic vietnamese dishes! interesting take on banh beo that I've never had before. It came in larger bowls and had a yellow savory sauce. It was definitely good, but wasn't the taste I was expecting. Fried fish cake appetizer was really tasty because it was gourmet, not some processed frozen kind. My bff and I always order the baby clams whenever we see that dish on the menu and its hard to mess up that dish. I've definitely had better elsewhere, because the flavor was a bit lacking here. My friend ordered the fermented fish pho which she said was super tasty.

Danny N.

Yelp
Good food, spicy chili and pickle shallots. Rare to find a place that serves Bun Mam noodle soup when you want something different. The banh beo was flavorful too with crispy pork.

Yelp
I used to be a regular customer here because of the rich flavor of the Bun Bo Hue, its authenticity, and a decent portion for what you paid for. I used to tell my friends this spot have one of the most must-try Bun Bo Hue in the Bay Area. That has changed today! With the transition to the new owner, the flavor is not as rich, the meat is way less for what you paid for, 2 or 3 thin slides, 2 small crab paste balls, 2 cubes of pork blood. What is given a lot is the noodles. The broth becomes oily but has no taste, bother line water. You no longer smell the rich of the beef broth. The previous owner used to give out shrimp paste (ruốt) that enhances this dish and banana flower cabbage. These are no longer a thing. This is probably the last time I ordered from here, I missed what it's used to be ...

Leina N.

Yelp
We were actually on our way to eat Thanh Ky down the block, but my mom suggested we go here instead because she heard they're under new management. My mom ordered Bun Mam and I ordered Bun măng Vịt (our usual go-tos when they were under the old management) and my sister ordered Bánh canh cua. All three of the soup bowls were so, so, so flavorless. The crispy roasted pork that came in the bun mam were cut into little baby pieces compared to the bigger pieces they used to serve. The duck that came with the bun măng vịt was at least tender and tastes fresh and ended up being the only thing I ate from that bowl since the noodles and soup were really bland. The noodles that came in the bánh canh were still hard, and for a large bowl, they barely included any noodles. There were only a couple of tiny shreds of crab in there and a bunch of tofu, even though the name of the soup is bánh canh cua (CRAB). The appetizer that we ordered (fried fish cake) were also disappointingly unappetizing. It tasted like it was microwaved too long because it was chewy/tough to chew. We also got a pork chop rice plate Togo for my boyfriend and even he said to never get him anything from here again. The pork chop pieces looked way over cooked and they're super little like pork ribs, not pork chops. This meal was not worth $100. I'm really bummed because this place used to be my favorite place to get duck and bamboo soup.

Yelp
The good: - Surprisingly large portions of noodle and meat. By the time I had finished both, my broth was near the bottom. I don't mind having less broth if replaced by noodle and meat, so long as the broth passes (here average, but passable). I also never usually get full off a bowl of pho and have to order extra noodles or the large, but the medium (there's only medium/large sizes) was more than enough. - Smiling service - The ice water was crisp with the perfect amount of lemon. I know it's free, but it caught me off guard so I have to mention it The ok: - Took awhile for two pho orders to come out despite only one other person there? Usually it is super fast at other pho locations - Rare steak was not sliced, instead it was these fall-apart clumps which felt awkward - Very very small menu compared to other restaurants I've been to. The bad: - Their prices are DECEPTIVE. The menu states it was 16.50 each for our pho. When I went up to the register to pay, it says "cash incentive, pay with cash and get a discount!" I get excited until I realize the add-on: "cash incentive price same as price marked in menu. additional 3.5% with credit card". There is no incentive, there is no real discount, this is just a sneaky roundabout way of saying there is a surcharge with card. A lot of places have credit surcharges, that's fine, but NOWHERE in the menu or when you enter does it state that the price we see when choosing off the menu is the price with CASH ONLY; otherwise, you will be paying a surcharge with credit. No one goes to the register first at a sit-down restaurant where you order at your table. They really need to have this purported "cash incentive" stated clearly in their menu. Will I be back? Not sure. Maybe if my go-tos are closed again and I happen to be carrying cash. Pro tip: bring cash.

Awesome food and service. Definitely go try their banh bèo. All the noodle soups here are good also

Yelp
The restaurant has been closed for sometime now. Google reported that the restaurant is temporary closed. The phone number is out of service. Update: I drove by and could confirm the restaurant is indeed closed. There is no signage about any new location. I feel sad coz the restaurant made really good food! I hope they will find another location in Oakland or nearby to re-open.

Yelp
Must try Bun Mam! It's probably the best I've had in the Bay Area. Very flavorful. Also Banh Beo is very good too. Service is excellent! As for Covid, they are clean and follow rules and regulations.

Yelp
This used to be one of my favorite Viet places to go to in Oakland and I would regularly drive from Walnut Creek to eat their bun mam! Went back last weekend after a few months off and was surprised to see the restaurant under new management! They gutted the menu and got rid of all of the dishes that made them unique like Banh beo, Banh xeo, mi quang, etc. The new bun mam version isn't as good and their bun Bo hue is embarrassing. Tasted zero lemongrass or shrimp paste--color of broth was akin to pho! The only saving grace of that restaurant now is the chili garlic on the side and the main waitress lady. She was literally doing everything during a massive lunch rush--I felt bad for her since everyone was asking about the old menu, and there were a few guys that were just standing around not helping. All in all I'm sad that this place is no longer the same and likely will never be back. 2 stars for the waitress and the chili garlic. Everything else--not good anymore. Now this place is just another basic viet restaurant with subpar food.

Yelp
A hidden gem in the Oakland Little Saigon area. Food is delicious and portion is generous, service is prompt as well. I do not come here often because it closes kind of early, but every time I come I leave happy. Today my party of two ordered banh beo, bun bo hue and a banh xeo. They came super fast. The banh xeo was served with rice paper and a bowl of warm water to soften it, no other places had offered that to me before. Banh beo is the best I've tried, they are steamed in a small bowl (versus a shallow dish) so it is thicker, better texture. And the various crunchy bits they top the banh beo with makes the texture and flavor pleasantly complex.

Yelp
Food was delicious - crepe was a but oily but also tasty. Complimentary veggies and herbs to roll into rice paper. Friendly folks. A good deal.

Yelp
Came here as recommendation from a pho owner for the bun boe hue which is delicious and ordered these as I was curious to see what it was. This is my second time trying the Banh beo and it's so tasty ! This was a take out order

Yelp
We are regular customers and this restaurant's always my favorite one. Finally Bun Cha Ca is back, I'm obsessed with it from the day I know Da Nang Quan. The waitress's also friendly. We're glad that she's back.

Yelp
Holy wowzers wowzers. This place was amazing! Me and my wife stepped in on a random Tuesday afternoon looking for a bowl of hot soup. She was sick and I was starving. We walked into the place and it looked really really, definitely above average for an Oakland pho joint. We ordered a bowl of BUN BO HUE and CHICKEN PHO. Both of them came out promptly and were delicious! The plate of greens that they brought to our table was immense and included shredded cabbage, banana blossom, (rare) 5 types of herbs, bean sprouts, jalapenos, lemon, and lime. It was just amazing. My bowl of bun bo hue was really good. I asked for it without any pork shank and blood and they were able to accommodate my request. The meats included in my bowl of bun bo hue were brisket, sliced tai beef, meatballs, and pork cake. I think it had house made pork cake! Mmmmm. My wife's bowl of chicken pho was good too. There was a good ratio of dark to white meat. She says it was delicious. They also have a variety of condiments. The herb plate had a bit of shrimp paste, they had pickled shallots (rare and delocious), and three types of hot chili preparations. I'd definitely come back with a friend. Service was friendly and they were swift. Highly recommended!

Yelp
My family and I used to come here numerous times a month but on our last visit this weekend, we noticed something was.. off. The menu was different and the waitress that we were used to was no longer here. I ordered the Pho with Oxtail and rare beef and I requested for the rare beef to be on the side. My husband ordered the Pho Ga. His pho ga was okay, it wasn't like it was before. It was just.. meh. It tasted more of chicken bouillon powder than of chicken flavor. My pho with oxtail came with the rare beef in the soup and my noodles were way overcooked. They kept breaking every time I tried to lift some noodles up and eventually, I gave up using chop sticks and just used my spoon. We ended up leaving most of the pho uneaten and after checking yelp today, it does seem like they are under new ownership. It's a bummer but I will give them another chance as maybe they are working on getting all the kinks out.

Yelp
Solid pho that isn't overly greasy or with msg. We pretty much had the whole restaurant to ourselves a hour before closing on a Sunday night. The filet mignon pho was good. The meat pieces were smaller than expected and not too much but good. Clean broth with good amount of noodles. Great condiments with crushed chilis. Fishcake was ok with it looking nice but not much of it. The spring rolls were fresh and refreshing. Everyone liked the peanut sauce. Service was great with the server answering all of our questions and refilling our waters. Street parking can be tough during peak times.

Yelp
They are NOT following COVID precautions and I would stay away. Food is good but huge public safety concern. Many staff are not wearing masks and there were patrons dining indoors even after California declared no outdoor or indoor dining allowed.

Yelp
The Bun Bo Hue was the best. It came with extra BBH spicy sauce, fresh herb, and shrimp paste. I got the large and spilt it in 2 meals. Never tire of a hearty noodle soup!
