Here’s Why Tomales Bay Oysters May Be Hard to Find at Bay Area Restaurants - Eater SF

"Dai Thanh Supermarket opened its second of two new locations at 1641 North Capitol Avenue in San Jose this week. The Mercury News reports the longtime San Jose favorite sold its original downtown location, the popular business’ home for more than 35 years, to open this North Capitol Avenue location and another on Tully Road in June 2022." - Paolo Bicchieri

Google
Omg, very impressed with their vegan/vegetarian sections. There's 1 whole isle of veg meats and another veg isle of vegan jerky and other dry goods. Also lots of vegan ramen as well.

Google
I went to do my weekly grocery shopping after work and got kicked out just because I had a laptop in my bag. I’m not a thief—I’m here to SHOP!!! That’s it, this store won’t see a single dime from me ever again. In San Jose, there are plenty of Asian supermarkets that actually know how to treat their customers!!!

Lam Ngo

Google
This is my favorite Asian market in all of San Jose. It's very clean, well-organized, and offers a great selection of products. The meat and seafood are always fresh, and the cashiers are friendly and helpful. Highly recommend!

Khanh Tran

Google
Good place if you want Vietnamese food and products. I don't really like their fresh meat tho.

Denise Dang

Google
Wonderful Vietnamese supermarket! Very clean and well organized! Good prices and the bagged veggies/fruits are reasonable sized (unlike 99 Ranch where it's always too much for one small family to use!!)

Google
WARNING! DO NOT GO HERE FOR MEAT! After just 1 day, the pork we bought at this grocery store turned a grayish tinge and had a huge sulfur smell. We took it back to the store and showed them, but the manager would not refund or replace with fresh meat. Instead the manager commented that this was normal and all meat should have a sulfur smell? My asian dad who usually never throws anything away said this was bad meat and to throw it away. I definitely will not be returning here in the future.

Google
I usually hardly write Google reviews, but I waited really long in the checkout queue at this supermarket, almost 20 minutes, close to 10 people waiting at each LINE, yet there were only 3 cashier employees, and this was at 6.30pm on a Thursday, I've never encountered this at any other grocery, and that's why for the low rate, it's a total waste of too much time!

Google
New supermarket in North San Jose. Its price is much lower compared with other supermarket around. It also has a good service.

Yelp
Decent spot, but does get a little hectic and confusing in terms of some of the layout, but it is a pretty popular spot. Pretty fair prices and if you need some Vietnamese products then they really do have a lot. Overall, a decent market, but nothing truly special I would say.

Yelp
Cute little Asian market with a lot of nostalgic Asian snacks. Reasonable price. They did remodeling so when we came they were stocking up the shelves again. Service is decent like every other Asian market. Seafood/Meat aisle decent but to me didn't look the best. Overall I would be back just for snacks.

Yelp
This is a nice, clean and new Vietnamese grocery store. They carry a wider variety of Vietnamese products than Ranch 99. I was able to find frozen lemongrass, a variety of eggroll wrappers, sweets, boba products, a variety of packaged flours to make Vietnamese appetizers. Plenty of parking, close to freeway.

Yelp
The hype has died down from this new Asian market. It depends on what you are looking for and the freshness of the produce, fruits, meats, seafood, etc. you could find some good deals.

Yelp
I hadn't visited here since their grand opening, when it was pretty chaotic. But looks like they've settled in, and looks great. There's a lot of competition in the area, but the prices are pretty competitive. Definitely lower priced than Berryessa Safeway and Sprouts on regular fruits and veggies, of which they have a broad selection that caters to Asian tastes, like yam leaves, oyster and maitake mushrooms, diakon, etc. The butchery is in the back, with lots of meats and seafood on display. Also, it's relatively clean (though not at Hmart level).

Yelp
I still miss the original location on 2nd Street. It was cramped, not the cleanest, and the parking sucked but it had everything I needed. Growing up my mom would often shop there especially when we expect to have company over. It was the cheapest grocery store around that time. Now that inflation is up the roof, I don't even look at the prices. I was in the area because I dropped Gavin off to my parents for the weekend and was nearby and thought I should check it out. I came here to get some fresh rice noodles, chicken thighs and chicken drumsticks, a bag of rice, bean curd in a jar, udon noodles, and incense for my monthly pray. I wanted to make udon stir-fry and pho ga (chicken noodle soup) for the work week. I'm still eating the pho ga. No issues. Plenty of parking. Folks at the register were friendly. I'll be back this Saturday!

Yelp
Two stars and believe me, I find that to be very generous... Yes, I get that Dai Thanh Supermarket is newly opened but I question why they even made that decision when there's so much that needs to be done. Aisles are filled with empty shelves, employees are still setting up and shifting things around- all while patrons are shopping and maneuvering around them, & the freezer area is nonexistent. I literally came in, did a quick walkthrough, and immediately went for the exit. There was literally nothing to buy unless you are purchasing produce or fish/meat. Hopefully I'll have a better experience once the supermarket irons out all of its wrinkles [& believe me, there are a lot of them].

Yelp
An asian market with lots of vegan options I came in to pick up a few appetizers for a lunar new year party and left with a bunch of vegan proteins. All sorts of soy and bean curd items. Ribeye bites, mock crab, fish, chicken, etc. Good produce assortment. Household products. I saw some reviews saying lines where packed and took awhile to get through. And the parking lot was crazy packed when I went, but they had every cashier open and actual line was quick. Definitely will be a new frequent place.

Yelp
This place was opened about a month ago. I came the day after grand opening and I walked out due to the crowds. I came back the second time and they are still trying to work out their kinks. Many shelves with products are not labeled without prices yet. The seafood area has minimal products except live crabs. There was a long line to get crabs and the crab prices was $3.69/lb which is unbeatable at this time. I have not seen such low prices. I came here because I went to another market and they had very small size crabs. So I came here and I scored! I didn't know the crab price was $3.69 at first! I got two crabs about $15 total. They were a little short from 2lbs each. I asked them for double bags at the cashier for the crabs due to water leaking from the current bag. They will charge for bag fees. The isles were wide enough that carts won't bump into each. Shelves were well stocks mostly except for the isles far to the right which was blocked off. Produce isles were full of people so I didn't try to go close. I got a pack of this G7 instant coffee which was cheaper than Costco but different brand. They taste similar but less sugar I think Prices in this place seems to be pretty competitive here. Will have to check them out later once the tanks are filled with more seafood Parking was packed since the lot is not big.

Yelp
I just found out this new location near my apartment. Their produce is super fresh and fairly priced, I think 99 ranch does way much worse than Dai Thanh. The seafood also looks amazing and not expensive. Try their frozen fried crab, I did that in my air fryer and it was amazing, 1lb only $6.99. I'll definitely come back for their tropical fruit and fresh meat.

Yelp
It was Fry's Supermarket, then Saved Mart, then Lucky Supermarket. Now here comes Dai Thanh Supermarket. Hope Dai Thanh can stay for long serving the neighborhood with good quality and attractive prices goods. Five stars is our best wishes. Gung hay fat choy. Visited the supermarket on the second day after the grand opening. Customers could smell kind of mixed not fresh air along the meat and seafood area. The smell was much much stronger than what customers experienced in other supermarkets (99, HM, Spts) down the street. Hope the management would pay attention to this and would have improvement after the remodeling was completed.

Yelp
Grand opening today! I wasn't the only one excited because the entire parking plaza was packed (don't count on getting Popeyes today) and the check out lines was the length of the entire aisle! They got really fresh produce and fruits! I think they were passing out grocery bags? I'll definitely come back when the hype dies down a bit.

Yelp
Competitive prices on fruits and produce in this grocery store. The quality on done vegetables doesn't look very fresh. Employees in the fresh fish section are pretty rude. Need some customer service training

Kim D.

Yelp
Please do not buy there fruits here, either they are still not mature or rotten from the inside. Especially those fruits where they couldn't sell and place it next to the cashiers counter tops, and the cashier tried to cheat you but telling lies that these fruits are sweet, yadadadada!! Do not trust them!

Yelp
Quite often crowded...Which means Vietnamese know the fruit and vegetables are fresh, priced to sell so they can always have fresh annnd, not crammed into net or plastic bags. That means you choose and pick the quality you want. Store has a complete cookware selection plus all sauces and seasonings needed. Great selection of fish and meats. I love the aroma of fresh fruit when we enter the store.

Yelp
My mom likes to go shopping here due to the low prices, but we won't go here ever again after getting our EBT card skimmed not just once, but twice. It just happened during our purchase on Oct 8th, and previously during April. They claim that they don't know anything about card skimmers, and that they check their machines every morning. But I know how these local shops work, and they figure that their mostly immigrant customer base won't report things to the police or make a fuss about it. If you must come here, I wouldn't pay with card.

Yelp
Poor customer service. If you're stuck behind a customer who's not moving or worse, chatting with the cashier, good luck. The manager doesn't care if you have to wait 10 min while they sort out their life problems, nobody will help you check out. I've experienced this twice already and it's frustrating. It's like they don't want your money. For this reason and a better selection, I'd go to Ranch 99 where people are more helpful and well trained.

Tom T.

Yelp
The customer service at this supermarket is extremely poor. The employees seem untrained and even harass customers over packaging issues. For instance, when I picked up a bag of rice, it spilled all over the floor due to faulty packaging. Shockingly, an employee demanded that I pay for it. I've never encountered such unreasonable behavior at any supermarket in the U.S. The employee was arrogant and intimidating in their demeanor. It feels like this once-beloved store is now run by bullies rather than the kind, hardworking people I used to know.

Yelp
Likes: -close to home -multiple varieties of some veggies (ie 3 kinds of eggplants) -fresh pho & pad Thai noodles (but only in large bags) -frozen vegan vietnamese foods - some dried "meat" strips. dislikes: -expensive & not really fresh long beans $5.99/lb noticed white fluff starting to grow, original choco pie $2.50ish vs flavored ones $2 or $5 more -instant noodles mostly large boxes of different pho noodles/ vietnamese noodle soup and some chinese noodles vs handful of korean/thai items mee goreng orignal box 0riginal $20! -more than half the items in store had NO PRICE TAG or wasn't correctly priced or named (ie mango boxes had 2 price tag signs $7.99 and $18.99 and neither of them had the correct brand of mangoes) -some drivers CANNOT drive! -freezer door by the snack aisle was empty as if the place was closing down It's been only 8 days since they've opened. I could come back in a few months or close to a year to see if there's improvements. I'm hoping they'll do better. Some say this place won't last long, Also there's no bakery section too. Stick to Ocean market.

Yelp
A lot of affordable frozen seafood for vietnamese dishes. Lots of affordable fruit too! I like viet and chinese groceries but like the product selections here more than 99 ranch.

Yelp
Wish came true that Dai Thanh opens a store in North Valley. This is the most favorite grocery in Bay Area. The selections is plentiful, everything is fresh and reasonable prices. Totally recommend this grocery store for many customers in North San Jose.
google avatar

Genaro T.

Yelp
The grocery store was clean and well stocked, especially the produce department. Great variety and choices of vegetables. Fresh fish and cleaning provided. Parking was ample. If you need anything Asian they have it. Enjoyed our time shopping there.

Yelp
Perfect supermarket. I love to have them here in my neighborhood. A lot of ethnic vegetables and others.

Yelp
Oh yes the new Dai Thanh. Oy I finally got a chance to drop by here after avoiding it because they moved from DTSJ. OMG so much memories there, been going to the old location since I was 7. Now for this location, it is a lot bigger than I expect. Inside and outside, it's a big win. Outside, I like those cool elephant statues that seem to greet customers. Inside, it's so much bigger now. They seem to be adjusting to the store because there are a lot of empty areas. Cannot blame them for that at all. Now that they are bigger it's kind of cool I am finding some pretty weird things here too. They had baby biscuits, yes you heard right. Biscuits for babies to eat. It's scary but no one cares because it's a sign the product selections have gotten a little better. I would come here again if I can but much more later because the store is a bit farther from where I live. It doesn't matter who you are please come by. Drawbacks: The inflation has made everything expensive but that's out of anyone's control. There are no scales here which can be a bit finicky because my mum and I are always very careful when buying fruits and vegetables.

Yelp
Selling the crack bottle, bad quality and no respondsibilty, Poor the customer service.

Yelp
Quality product and fresh. Definitely recommended. They got a lot of good Vietnamese food
google avatar

Yelp
As far as I know, this grocery store just opened. They've already sold expired food "Before 01/05/2023".

Yelp
My mom has been going to this store for years, so when they moved she went to their new location. Good selection on fruits and vegetables. The cashiers all know my mom so she feels very welcome! Lots of crabs and lobsters when in season!
google avatar

Yelp
Just got some good priced Dragon Fruit today. Welcome to my neighborhood making the area looking lively again! Wishing your store success in the years to come.

Debby Y.

Yelp
Love this place. Fresh veggies and reasonable price. Clean aisles and very organized.

Thuy H.

Yelp
This supermarket always has fresh vegetables and has lower prices compared other Vietnamese super markets. When i go to San Jose, I like to stop by it.

Ha P.

Yelp
More selections .Good services . Clean . Bargain price

Mark N.

Yelp
Too expensive...never go to this market again....everything is jackhammer up the price...if you compare to Ly Hung market then you will see the difference...sorry

Tiffany H.

Yelp
The vegetables and noodles are fresh and regular like other supermarkets but the meat and fish sections are not very fresh. Yesterday, we bought the beef there and asked the guys to slice it thinly for phở. We couldn't enjoy our phở because the meat was not tender and the cut was too thick. Never come back here for meat or fish.

Kay V.

Yelp
I went shopping at Dai Thanh the day before Lunar New Year. Found everything I need in good price and quality, service was nice and experienced.

Rosita A.

Yelp
They are not ready for grand opening. Their computers and cash registers don't work, so be ready to spent a couple of hours in the store even if you are only buying a couple of items. There are lines of customers in every aisle waiting for their chance to pay for their items. I will go back after a week to see if there is an improvement. Thank you for opening your store in our area, though.
