The 14 Best Places to Drink Cocktails in Santa Barbara | Eater LA

"Devon Espinosa — formerly of LA’s Tasting Kitchen, Ink and the Church Key — has brought his creative cocktail-making skills to the Hotel Californian in Santa Barbara’s Funk Zone. As the hotel’s beverage director, Espinosa designed the drink menus for the whole property, from pool bar to in-room dining. But the Moroccan-dressed lobby bar, Djinn Library Bar, is where to drop in for well-crafted sippers with Instagram-ready presentations. The blueberry bourbon drink Puff, Puff, Pass is served on a moss bed enclosed in a smoke-filled glass cloche, literally ready to appear in a puff of smoke." - Caroline Pardilla

"Santa Barbara has a new cocktail option to know about inside Hotel Californian. The project is called Djinn, and it’s hidden inside the property right off guest reception. Cocktails are crafted by noted LA barman Devon Espinosa." - Farley Elliott

Terrible drinks, and even worse service. Don’t bother going here. The drinks sound creative, but the bartenders clearly have no passion for their jobs, and they don’t know what tastes good together, or can even recommend a drink based on flavor profiles. They are all very young and clearly hired for their looks, not their skill. Atmosphere is pretty, but can get noisy when busy. Another place that thinks it’s way cooler than it is. There are so many places nearby that are so much better than this place. Skip it. Try anywhere else for drinks.

Plenty of seats and drinks are pretty solid. It's a hotel bar and it's decorated nicely. Have both indoor and outdoor seats. A mixed crowd and some of them are more glam than the others. Stop by!

Don’t let the quiet vibe fool you—this bar is a treasure waiting to be discovered. I stopped in and had the absolute best cocktail I’ve ever tasted, thanks to Julian, the talented bartender who clearly knows his craft. Each sip was perfectly balanced, with flavors that felt thoughtful and creative. While the bar was empty during my visit, it only added to the charm—no crowds, no noise, just incredible drinks and attentive service. If you're looking for a place to unwind and enjoy a truly exceptional cocktail, this is it. Ask for Julian—you won’t be disappointed!

Yelp
Absolutely love the cocktails here. One of then best things about this property is how each bar has a curated cocktail menu. This environment is so welcoming, it's the perfect place to meet up with friends for a drink .

Yelp
I had a negative experience at this cocktail bar. The service was unkind and unprofessional. Despite being a cocktail bar, they had a very limited selection of vodka cocktails. They have very limited food options. I left feeling disappointed. Not worth the visit

Yelp
Such a cute and cozy bar inside the Californian Hotel. Great decor and seating. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable. Ordered a Empress which had great flavor! The right side of the tracks was also packed with citrus notes. I'd definitely come back and bring more folks.

Yelp
Lovely cocktails, friendly staff at this lobby bar. The Empress was light and nicely balanced. Seats at the bar are fine, but expect to see hotel guests and kids passing through. Better option, grab a seat out on the lovely patio. Worth checking out.

Yelp
I had such a great experience here at Djinn during their Full Buck Moon event. I highly recommend signing up for California Hotel events to be in the know. I decided to RSVP, which they do recommend but it is free and at least you have that comfort knowing you RSVP'd ahead of time just in case. During each new full moon this event is held and it includes a free tarot card reading, or a runes reading and a cool DJ spinning some great tunes. I was excited to get my first tarot card reading, and my experience was not only enjoyable, but everything my cards said about me were on point. Thank you Kristine for a beautiful reading. Mystic Libations are created by Devon Espinosa who began his culinary journey at the young age of 17. How amazing is that! Devon's interest in what was happening behind the bar was more intriguing and lead him to be a master teacher in his cocktail programs. I enjoyed how whimsical Willow's Journey libation was presented to me. This drink includes Bonal Gentiane-Quina, lime, Pierre Ferrand Dry Curaçao, Simple Syrup, Thai Basil, and Cucumber. It was served in a beautiful tea pot, which caught me off guard and was quite a surprise! This drink was served chilled over a cube of ice, and it tasted more like juice but it packed a punch. My second drink of choice was The Stag Buck Moon special. It was a their creative spin on a peachy moscow mule and consisted of Stoli Elite Vodka, Ginger syrup, lime and creme de peche. This drink was light, refreshing and slightly peachy. My friend ordered the Midnight Morrocco which was a beautiful blue colored drink. I was able to take a sip of this one and it was amazing! There's a an explosion of the luxardo liqueur which is slightly sweet and then the firewater bitters kicks in with the spiciness. Great combo! Overall, this beautiful classy bar serves up some mystical creative drinks and the bartender's did a great job at mastering them.

Yelp
Really sexy/swanky spot here in Santa Barbara. We were walking around and were looking for a lounge exactly like this. They have a couple comfy couches, nice lighting, a nice set up. The service was really nice, they even had really good freshly baked desserts. But the mixed drinks were just OK. Some are a little over heavy one side or the other. Perhaps I'll stick to simpler drinks the next time I come, but they definitely have a nice set up. Espresso martini was definitely amazing and 100% recommend! Yes I will be back here when we come back to Santa Barbara.

Yelp
Amazing bar with craft cocktails and light snacks. The DJ makes it a fun experience. Will definitely come back. Popcorn and crostini were a great snack.

Yelp
Too legit to quit... This FOR REAL is a hidden gem. Nestled under a banging hotel (Note to self: Check the prices asap), Djinn is a place if you're in a solo state of mind or wanna meet some besties for some sips and nibbles. My waiter (name TBD) recommended a cocktail, called 1925, after I mentioned I was thinking of Mezcal. Um hello, we're in SB; don't judge me. Well, TBD was on the money. The 1925, which isn't on the menu FYI, was everything a mez-tail could hope to be. If you want some time under an adobe inspired rooftop passthrough, come to Djinn.

Yelp
The cocktails are delicious. Be sure to ask for Kerry. He's easy to look at and he's nice. Plus his cocktails and service are great! I ordered the Empress cocktail. Oh my gosh, was it yummy!?! Yes!!! I ordered two. In the picture is my second one that I finished. So delicious.

Yelp
Great service, an interesting and focused list of cocktails, lovely space and ambiance in the lobby of the chic Hotel Californian.

Yelp
Came here because I saw it in Yelp and Will and Vincent were the best! Great ambiance and amazing drinks and super chill. They give great recommendations as well. Come here!!

Yelp
A cocktail bar in the lobby of the Hotel Californian. The menu is very cool bound in leather. That's kind of where the charm ends. The menu spends two pages hyping up how great these cocktails are supposed to be, talking about the mixologist and how these are exclusive to Djinn. That would be fine if they were great cocktails, but I'm glad I won't be encountering these anywhere else in Santa Barbara. They're okay, but not worth going to a bar and paying the premium for them. Then there's the atmosphere. It's very loud and echoy, so sitting with your partner and having a quiet conversation, like you would in a normal lounge. Then there's the type of patrons that a bar in a $1000/night hotel attracts. It's a rich tourist trap. Finney's across the street was a breath of fresh air and a nice return to reality. For good cocktails, go to The Lark of The Foxtail.

Yelp
I'm a local resident but have come here a few times because the cocktails are amazing and Kerry is a superb bartender! He can make a tasty cocktail off of your preferences or try one of the cocktails off the menu as you can't go wrong!

Yelp
Fun, relaxing, chic atmosphere with really good drinks, and friendly bartender named Chris. Get the Puff, Puff, Pass. This drink may take a little longer to make, but it is well worth the wait. This drink has complex flavors that meld together to give an overall exquisite experience, and the presentation was a nice surprise. All the drinks are very unique! The Black Swan Dessert was also impressive in presentation, and wasn't too sweet. Recommended by Chris the bartender, and did not disappoint.

Yelp
Fantastic ambiance and a fun cocktail menu. The bartenders were into making a show of it, which was entertaining. There is a variety of seating, and every detail of the decor is impeccable!

Yelp
Hidden gem just off the lobby of Hotel Californian. Great decor. Spanish exterior fitting the Santa Barbara motif but with a lavish Moroccan interior. Amazing cocktails (try the Puff Puff Pass) plus great food from the fantastic Chef at the hotel restaurant, Blackbird. Great service every time I've been here. The drink menu covers a lot of bases but bartenders Mike, Chris, and Ryan are all amazing and can customize drinks so it's perfect for you. Always worth stopping by if you are in the area.
