Đồ Chay Saigon Vegetarian

Holy cow, this place is delicious. I always look at the reviews before deciding where to go and this one had such good reviews. I couldn't not choose it as the place for lunch. We arrived 30 minutes before happy hour ended around 5:30 p.m. so we had some time to get two rounds of drinks while waiting for our food. We had the coconut rice cakes and spring rolls as well as troubles, spaghetti and the curry. Every single thing we had was absolutely delectable and would urge you to check this place out.

Food 4/5 Ordered coco cake (great), Daikon cake (good) sesame crisps (good) papaya salad (good) and black garlic eggplant bowl (okay). Overall very good but the serving is so fast that we felt strongly pushed. Service 4/5 attentive but not much introductions about food, she may not feel well as her voice was almost lost. Tea pot can use filter so we don’t have to eat loose tea leaves. Ambience 1/5 lots of flies maybe because lots of plants?…shoes on the way to washroom…really messy…not really acceptable. Honestly I am a little sad because of it could have been a great place but you can just tell people there don’t care…

Absolutely fantastic spot. The dishes are so well put together and all taste amazing (tried every appetizers amongst my friends). Completely dodges any preconceived ideas you might have as well about vegetarian dishes and made me wish there were more options like this. Definitely will be returning next time I’m in Vancouver

Reinvented. We ate here a few times when they were called House Special. They have since reinvented themselves with vegetarian only menu – much better. We ordered three dishes the first time: Monsoon Roll, Green Onion Pancake and Satay Noodles. I didn't expect to be full, but I was full until bedtime and couldn't eat anything else. I also saw a delicious deep fried dish going around which the server explained to be Hings Wings. Today we order four dishes (yes, too much food, but I HAD to try the Uncle Hings Wings!) Ouch, they were spicy. The wings I saw last time were not coated with hot sauce. Fireyah! Note to self: must remember to ask for sauce on the side next time(!) We also ordered the Spring Rolls and Desert Island Noodles this time. Again, we found the dipping sauce for the Spring Rolls fiery. My companion really enjoyed the noodles with the fried plantains. The dish is not 'sloppy' like the soup-based noodles. And guess what, by the time the Green Onion Pancake arrived, we were too full already. So, far, everything we tried were delicious, and unfortunately, we happened to love all the deep fried dishes.

Very flavourful food, beautiful interior and outdoor seating, and excellent food presentation. Great restaurant ambiance for an evening out. I was debating between rating this restaurant a 3 or 4 star, but decided on four because for being vegan, the flavours are wonderfully complex. My criticisms: the portions are very small. An entree likely will not satisfy you unless you are a small eater or have a small appetite. My other criticism is the service, which was pretty bad; The waiter waiting our table couldn't explain to me any information about the dishes I asked about other than what was said on the menu. There was another instance where they didn't seem to understand that we wanted to order something else and we had to ask them to confirm that they got down our order correctly (their interaction with us was not reassuring). And he and the other waiter were just awkward and not very warm or engaging. For me it was an alright experience and pretty forgettable, though I still believe it's a nice option if you're vegan/vegetarian and enjoy Vietnamese food, and/or just want to try a new place in Yaletown that's pretty and tasty.

A friend strongly recommended the coconut cakes and they absolutely lived up to their reputation! Crispy on the outside and melty on the inside with fantastic coconut flavour. The daikon cakes on a fried egg bed were also absolutely delicious, which just made the rest of the meal all the more disappointing... The monsoon roll was completely bland and while the stacked pyramid was a very artistic presentation, by the time we got through the top few they were all entirely glued into a messy block that was impossible to separate without making a big mess. Most of the mains we ordered were fine if rather forgettable, although the white truffle Saigon spaghetti was extra disappointing for being completely lacking in any sort of truffle flavour. Would recommend sticking to the smaller share plates, because the coco cake and daikon cakes were really quite stellar!

Do Chay was so tasty. We stopped by to split a few dishes and I really liked them all. The coco rice cakes were interesting but maybe my least favorite of the three. The desert island noodles were incredible. Thick udon, amazing sauce, and the vegan meatball was so yummy. It was my personal favorite. Finally the sweet and spicy was solid. Great flavour, and generous portion. All around awesome vegan restaurant.

As a vegetarian, my favourite restaurant in Vancouver. Outstanding, flavourful food, great service. A must-go, and worth going out of your way to visit. My favourites: any of the dumplings are fantastic. Spring rolls are way better than the average Vietnamese restaurant, and better than any we had in Vietnam. Uncle Hings mushroom wings. Daikon cakes. The lemongrass tofu or vegan vermicelli. Black garlic eggplant.
