Watch San Jose Buddhist Monks Make Thousands of Bánh Tét for the Lunar New Year Holiday at Đức Viên Temple | Eater SF

"I watched a nine-minute documentary that follows Đức Viên Temple in San Jose as the community prepares for Lunar New Year, showing nuns and volunteers making thousands of banana leaf–wrapped bánh tét—sticky glutinous rice cakes filled with mung bean and pork belly. The temple, described as one of the largest Buddhist temples in the Bay Area and reportedly built by nuns who collected recycling to fund its creation, opens its doors for children and families to pitch in on the meticulous, hand-done process; community members even take pre-orders in December. The film captures tactile, meaningful moments—an elderly woman explaining to a child that the sticky rice binds the community together—and the festival atmosphere with fireworks and firecrackers up and down the street, portraying the temple as both a spiritual hub and a hands-on center for sustaining Lunar New Year food traditions." - Paolo Bicchieri

This Buddhist temple in San Jose is such a beautiful and peaceful spot. The moment you walk in, you can feel the calm settle in. The grounds are clean, quiet, and perfect if you just want to sit, breathe, or clear your mind. Whether you’re coming to pray, meditate, or just find a little peace, the atmosphere here makes you feel comfortable right away. It’s a wonderful place to slow down and reconnect with yourself. I’m really grateful to have a space like this in the community.

My family and I have visited Chùa Đức Viên in San Jose several times, and each visit feels like a unique and cherished experience. The temple's serene environment and beautiful architecture create a peaceful atmosphere for meditation and reflection. With its golden statues of Buddha, intricate decorations, and vibrant flowers, the temple is not only visually stunning but also spiritually uplifting. Every time we step into the temple, it feels like a tranquil retreat from the hustle and bustle of daily life. The community at Chùa Đức Viên is incredibly welcoming and supportive. We've had the pleasure of participating in various programs and services, such as spiritual guidance and community outreach activities. The monks and staff members are always attentive and kind, making each visit feel special. During our visits, we also enjoy the festive booths set up for celebrations like Tết, which add to the cultural richness of the temple. One booth, in particular, was beautifully decorated for the Vietnamese Lunar New Year (Tết) celebration. It featured a vibrant and festive atmosphere with yellow flowers, red banners with Vietnamese text, and a large red diamond-shaped sign with the word "Tết" in the center. Other decorative elements included a small table with vases, a lion dance mask, and green and red patterned boxes. String lights were hung around the booth, adding to the festive ambiance. Visiting Chùa Đức Viên is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience that leaves a lasting impression on one's soul. The temple's serene environment, beautiful architecture, and welcoming community make it a gem in San Jose. We look forward to continuing our visits and being part of this wonderful spiritual journey

I came during Chinese Lunar New Year and Vietnamese Tet festivals. The temple is decorated beautifully. It also brought us a Vietnamese temple vibes atmosphere here where many people pays a visit to Budha temple in the beginning of a new year for good luck. Many great Budha statues. They also offer vegetarian food in exchange for donations.

This is the temple being held by the nuns and lots of dedicated volunteers. You’ll find beautiful court yard all around the temple. The temple has many different activities throughout the years for different age groups. It’s also home of the most wonderful retreat( age range as young as 4 years to teens)during a week in July and in January. If you have young children, I highly recommend to sign up for them. The temple only ask for donations or food supplies so that they can host all 3 meals for the kids during the retreat. I son has learned so much each time he completed the retreat. Each Sunday, the temple would serve healthy vegan lunch for everyone and the community. During the Lunar New Year, you’ll find the temple turn into a colorful place filled of unique decorations, vegan foods and endless discovery here. Here are some examples. You would have to come and experience a piece of flavor like “ home” in Vietnam.
