D.L. Mack’s brings Chicago-Style Pizzas to University Park - Eater Dallas

"D.L. Mack’s, a sibling restaurant to Hudson House, opens today in the Park Cities, serving Chicago-style cracker crust pizzas. The restaurant features an old-school Chicago atmosphere with 200-year-old reclaimed dark wood floors, antique brick walls, and decor from The Art Institute of Chicago. The menu includes salads, sandwiches, garlic knots, and special pizzas like the Return Of The Mack. Notable items include Vandelay Hospitality’s famous cheeseburger, chicken tenders with truffle-honey mustard, and a Steak Frites Au Poivre entree. The cocktail menu features ice-cold martinis, frozen Palomas and Bellinis, and a Bees Knees with Lilet Blanc limoncello foam." - Adele Chapin

Cute neighbor spot! We came for lunch and no wait time. We ordered: Deviled eggs - solid Smoked Salmon - nice sauce Chinese Chicken Salad (I would prefer them to just name it Asian, not sure what made it specifically Chinese) - good flavors though Next time, I want to try their pizzas! Overall, not bad spot. Really vibey, seems like it would be busier on dinner nights.

Other than an initial issue with drinks which our server quickly rectified, our group enjoyed our time at DL Macks on Hillcrest. I ordered a non-alcoholic beverage, but they brought me the drink with alcohol in it. They placed “nonalcoholic” in parentheses on their menu, which I feel causes confusion. Overall, we liked our dining experience at the restaurant. Fun atmosphere with old Chicago decor. Delicious food, especially the pizza! Good service. Make reservations because it gets busy! No valet, but you can park in the lot or the nearby garage with its public entrance on the other side. You can also park on the neighborhood street. Pay attention to signs.

So good!! Big fan of Hudson House so I knew this place was going to be great when I found out they’re sister restaurants. Everything was amazing! My favorite appetizer was the spinach dip. I wish they’d bring back the matchbooks though.

Very cool Chicago style restaurant! Online payment style is super super cool for groups. Lexi (our waitress) was really sweet! Martini is a MUST!

Google
Adrianna was amazing. Food and service were 10/10! White truffle gnocchi and the Mack pizza were amazing.

Overall, I think D.L. Mack’s is good, not great. It’s not my favorite of the Vandelay restaurants, but it’s still a Vandelay restaurant. There are little tweaks here and there on the food that I think would improve the menu items and make them more enjoyable. We got the Bill Murray pizza (loved this), Caesar salad (this should be tweaked, imo), fries (good), and brownie dessert (pretty good). We went on a busy Friday night, so the service was a little slow but that’s to be expected. Our waitress was super nice and proactive. Maybe I just need to come back and give some other menu items a try, but overall good not great!

Google
Fantastic dining option from the Vandelay group. The ambiance is super warm in here and can be great for many occasions including date night or getting together with friends. We enjoyed a regular martini and espresso martini which were part of a great happy hour. We then split a salad and pizza (Bill Murray Special) which were also amazing. This was one of the more enjoyable dining experiences we have had recently and plan on coming back.

My god, we love D.L. Macks. We saw it on Instagram and my boyfriend put it on our list. We were passing through the area and decided to stop by. Firstly, we love the space. It was a modern take on an old school vibe. So good. For the food, we ordered their Chicken Parm and the Cheese Tortellini with the creamy pesto sauce. The Chicken Parm came with the spicy rigatoni. The chicken was incredible, but the spicy rigatoni was just okay. It looks better than it tastes. It wasn’t bad, just kind of lackluster. The Cheese Tortellini, however, was incredible. We were OBSESSED. It’s very rich, but man if you like rich, get it. I paired it with a Dirty Martini, for no other reason than I love Dirty Martinis, and it was perfect. My boyfriend liked his drinks as well - they made a very strong margarita. Their mozzarella bites were so good and the Caesar salad was unique. I would likely skip the salad next time. We can’t wait to go back and try the other items. Their sandwiches look incredible. So does the pizza.

Yelp
Delicious food and decent service. The ambiance is very similar to Hudson House and the food is tasty. It is a little on the pricier side but the ambiance makes up for that. We came for lunch on a weekend and it was not super packed which was nice. They have a patio that is heated and enclosed during the winter which makes for plenty of more searing options. The food itself was tasty and the portions are plenty big. The burger was delicious and their shoestring fries are not to be missed. Cracker crust pizza and huge chicken parm as well! I'd definitely recommend this spot for a great meal! The only miss for us was our server was a but slow in checking on us but was not the end of the world.

Yelp
Yes, yes, and another yes! Service was great, the staff was prompt and attentive. We started with the gin cocktail which was light and fresh. The mozzarella bites were lightly battered and served with a marinara sauce that was slightly sweet. The Caesar salad was the bomb! And the cornbread croutons were innovative and I wish there was more. They are known for their tavern pizza which I highly recommend. Good ratio of cheese and pepperoni to sauce and crust!

Yelp
10/10 I cannot wait to go back. I went for a girls dinner and this place did not disappoint. Everything that we tried was so amazing. We started off with linen and drops, which were perfect. My favorite food item was definitely the Bill Murray Pizza, but the mozzarella bites were tasty as well. The cornbread croutons on the Caesar salad was a very nice touch. Definitely elevated the salad! The staff was so nice and gave great recommendations. We sat on the patio, but it was heated and so we were still able to be comfortable and watch the game. Again, I cannot wait to go back.

Yelp
I wish I took pictures but totally forgot. A friend and I met up here for lunch on a weekday and it was pretty empty. I did have my baby in a car seat and felt like the booths were a little tight. Other than that, it was a good dining experience. I ordered the tuna melt which was so delicious and a beauty. The salad it came with was also very good. My friend ordered the bill murray special and we both liked that as well. Hot honey on a pizza is always the right move. I would definitely come back for the tuna melt.

Yelp
Our group recently ate dinner at the Hillcrest location of DL Macks. We enjoyed most of our experience. I ordered a non-alcoholic beverage, labeled as such on the menu. Unfortunately, the server brought me the drink with alcohol in it. I noticed the taste of alcohol but before I got the opportunity to mention this to our server, the manager came to our table to let us know about the error. They apologized and I accepted it as an honest mistake. For other people, however, this kind of mistake cannot happen. While it does not negatively impact my review, others need to know about the situation because of its potential liability. I think some confusion might occur because they placed "non-alcoholic" in parentheses on the menu. Everyone, from the bartenders and servers to the customers, needs to align on what that means by default. Other than this, our group really enjoyed our time at the restaurant. We felt its "old Chicago" design offered a casual and fun atmosphere for you to dress up or down depending on the occasion. We found that the food, especially the pizza, tasted fantastic! And, despite the initial issue with the non-alcoholic beverage, we experienced good service. Overall, I recommend DL Macks. Make reservations because they get busy! Also, they do not offer a valet service. You might find it difficult to park in the lot. But, you can park on one side of the neighborhood street or in the nearby garage with its public parking entrance on the other side.

Yelp
Cute restaurant with a pretty solid menu. The service was still good despite there really only being 1 server during lunch when I went. The fries were so good and the pizzas that others got looked amazing.
google avatar

Yelp
Delicious food, love the decor, and the patio has such a great vibe. The pizza was amazing, love the crust to crust toppings. Adding DL Mack's to my rotation!

Yelp
First time coming to this place for dinner with my family and it did not disappoint. The staff were very welcoming, this place was very nice and clean. With comfortable booth seating. Our server Phoenix was outstanding! Made sure what got whatever we needed. He was fast and attentive to our requests. The food of our choices were delicious. Check this place out.

Yelp
This is easy. Food was excellent, one of the best grilled salmon dishes I've had, with delicious and healthy sides. Ambience was pleasant. It was full of people but not too noisy. Fantastic service!! Prices were decent for what I got. All in all, a very positive experience. Happy to go here again when I'm bad in Dallas.

Yelp
We have dined here several times and every time you are greeted by a friendly staff, clean restaurant, great decor and amazing smells. The entire menu is delicious. The Greek salad, chicken Parmesan, pizza and many others are all delicious! Thank you!

John C.

Yelp
The food at the Hillcrest venue is much less desirable than the North Dallas one. The pizza is good but all else pales. I had the Chicken Parmesan and had two bites, could stand no more. It was overcooked, and the pasta sauce had a very odd, unpalatable taste to it, just gross. Good service and good ambiance, but food needs attention.
google avatar

Yelp
We met some friends here and it was a lot of fun! The food was very good! We all got some drinks which were tasty. The food was incredible. We got two of the same pizza plus my chicken entree and our friend got a burger. The pizza and my chicken were very good! I didn't want to give any of my entree to my girlfriend because it was so good. However our friends burger he said was not very good :(. Our waitress was very nice and friendly but sometimes took a while to get her attention. Overall a great experience and I think I would definitely come back!

Yelp
DL Macks is very good upscale bar food. We sometimes go to the location at Preston Royal, but decided to try the University Park location. It was excellent. The vibe was good and our service was great. The menu is similar to Houston's/Hillstone, with really good pizza and lots of signature cocktails. We had their spinach and artichoke dip, which was tasty (after we sent it back since it originally arrived cold). The deviled eggs were good as well. My wife got the McCarthy salad, which was quite large, savory and full of chicken. I got the salmon which was also very good and served with a healthy side of coleslaw. Make a reservation on Resy, because it gets crowded.

Yelp
We found D.L. Mack's while running errands in Dallas and it as an unexpected delight! It was a weekday afternoon and not busy at all for a lunch crowd. Had an old school charm with the dark wood, lighting and tiling; loved the classic look of it all! Our server was nice but a little slow when it came to refilling waters or checking on us. Kitchen was rather slow as well even for our salads to come out took quiet a while. While service was slow, food was great! We both ordered a Caesar salad each and split a Bill Murray Special pizza. The crust had the perfect balance of crispiness and chewiness, and the toppings were fresh and flavorful. Our accidental discovery of D.L. Mack's turned out to be a delightful surprise. We plan to visit again when we are in the area in hopes of better and faster service.

Randall P.

Yelp
D.L. Mack's used to be one of our favorite restaurants. The quality has unfortunately plummeted. Food on the menu has either changed distributors or has been taken off and service is no longer up to par. When we asked to speak to the manager who had been there for years, we were told she was no longer with the company. Figures. Probably won't be back anymore.

Dr M.

Yelp
Stopped by for happy hour and ordered the lemon drop martini, a pizza, Cesar salad and fries. All hot and delicious. Salad had lighter dressing than normal, which was delicious. We sat at the bar and service was fine but nothing special. Warm and inviting, would go back but maybe only at happy hour.
google avatar

Emily W.

Yelp
I have always loved DL Mack's, but I am worried it is going downhill. The portions are much smaller, which is disappointing. I still love the honey truffle pizza (though it's much smaller). Did they think we wouldn't notice?!? I used to love the caesar salad (add chicken) but it was off tonight. Service, ambience, and music are great though. Shoutout to Ashley as she is what is keeping me coming back!

Yelp
2nd time dining at D.L. Mack's and we had a great experience and enjoyed the food. We came on a Saturday night around 8pm for a late dinner without a reservation and were able to get seated right away. The service was quick, our waiter was attentive and the food was delicious! Would recommend this as a great spot to get dinner with family or friends. SPINACH ARTICHOKE DIP salsa, sour cream, homemade tortilla chips 4/5 Review - Great starter, we enjoyed the dip. SPICY RIGATONI red chili ZaZa sauce, fresh stracciatella cheese 4.3/5 Review - Their spicy rigatoni is wonderful and never disappoints, I ordered it both times I've visited. Usually spicy rigatoni isn't "spicy" but theirs has a good kick of spicy but it's not too spicy to eat. The stracciatella cheese is the perfect addition to this dish. It adds a creamy milky flavor that balances the heat from the spicy well. CRISPY CHICKEN TENDERS coleslaw, truffle honey mustard & barbecue 5/5 - Best chicken tenders ever. Period. They breading on the tenders is phenomenal, not like any chicken I've had before. They have a great crunch and the meat is light and tender. If they added a few more tenders to the dish I think that'd be the perfect amount. Overall this is a MUST order!

Lizeth R.

Yelp
Service was not great, we were charged the wrong amount to our card even after we told our server Jibrel. We got a double drink even though we didn't ask for it, we had to ask our server for silverware and napkins since we never got them, and food was just ok. The place is pretty nice, I would say more for Date night. We are not planning to go back.

Yelp
Ambiance was trendy and upbeat. Seated promptly with a reservation. Service was friendly, courteous, and helpful with menu selections. Chicken Parm, outstanding. Ceasars salad very enjoyable, and the Italian mob was loaded with good meats, veggies, and Italian dressing and spices. The mob sandwich only dissapointed in that it was cold. I was expecting it to be a hot sandwich. It was still good but not among the best. Drinks were punctual and we'll poured. All in all it was a 4.5 evening and enjoyable. It even got exciting with a Heinrich maneuver performed by my son, on a gentleman across the isle in a neighboring booth. That also ended well with. An errant piece of pepporoni expelled back onto the plate from a patron's standing position while in a reverse bear hug. An eventful night and good food with some table side first aide.

Yelp
The wife and I returned here for a late lunch on a Saturday afternoon. This is a cute little place across from SMU that attracts students and the University Park/Highland Park crowd. The ambience is traditional and appealing. I like the inside because it feels homey and a place you would want to hang out. We started with a couple of beers. Unfortunately, they do not have any draft beers which is rather odd given the prominence of the bar to the rest of the restaurant. Bottles only. I dinged the restaurant for not have anything on tap. We ordered deviled eggs and they were very good. I would definitely get them again. Very tasty. The small mixed salad (enough for one, not to share) was also very good and we both really liked it. The main reason for 3 stars instead of 4 is that our pizza was not very good. We got the Chicagoan which the waiter said was his favorite. The pizza we received did not have crispy crust. Their paper thin crust is, for me, the main attraction, but the crust was not crispy in the least. Maybe they did not cook it long enough? Maybe the dough was too watery? I don't know, but it just was not good crust. It was not doughy inside which would suggest it was raw, but it just lacked the crisp that one would expect with extremely thin dough. The second thing wrong was that the pizza was unbelievably salty. Almost inedible. I am not sure what was going on with that pizza, but I would not get order it again. Our server, Nate, was friendly and efficient. No complaints about the service. But they really need to work on getting the pizza crust right.

Marc R.

Yelp
This place is AWESOME!!!! Late lunch deviled eggs and a pizza and a sweet tea. I want to try everything on this menu!!
google avatar

Victoria E.

Yelp
Met a friend for lunch, it was our first visit. Joe our waiter was friendly and helpful. We both tried a small Caesar Salad and shared the chicken parmigiana sliders. The salad was more lemony than anchovy with cornbread croutons. Delicious but my preference is a crispy crouton. The sliders came with a side of tomato sauce and crispy chicken covered with mozzarella on a soft bun. We shared the brownie and ice cream, the brownie was full of cherries and chunks of chocolate. Small intimate restaurant with a nice bar.

Barbara G.

Yelp
I don't usually write reviews. My husband and I dropped in craving Pizza. Sat at the bar and split a Cezar Salad and a Bill Murray pizza. Excellent!!! No complaints at all! So good! Our Grandaughter texted and asked us to bring her a Vodka Pasta with Chicken, so we got that to go. When we got home, we realized the chicken was missing. I called and they were so apologetic, and reimbursed the Pasta dish. Honestly it was the principal of the thing. I was just impressed that they stood behind and reimbursed. I will be back!!!!!!! Also their happy hour drinks are very nice!

B N K F.

Yelp
Food was delicious! The patio seating was great to watch football on Sunday! Service was amazing. Will be back

Andy K.

Yelp
We went to DL Mack's at Preston Royal last night and had a fantastic experience. The food, drinks, and service were all perfect and everyone made us feel special. We've been there many times, but last night was a grand slam event and we will return. Deviled eggs, Brussel sprout salad, salmon, tortellini and brownie were wonderful.
google avatar

Kendall B.

Yelp
Went here for a first date and let me tell you..... I loved the restaurant more than I loved the guy. That's so rude. But the food was delicious. I vaguely remember my server being robotic....but she got everything right. The vibe of the place feels upscale, but everyone is laid back. I remember feeling underdressed, but maybe everyone else was overdressed. I ordered the Bill Murray Special only because he's a Legend... an Icon. Who the hell put red onions on this pizza? it was sooo delicious, I ate the whole pizza by myself. Bye!
google avatar

Katherine M.

Yelp
I wanted to love DL Macks as I have heard great things about it but I have to say there was nothing special about it. Not sure if we ordered the wrong things but our food was meh. The rigatoni wasn't spicy at all. We were seated right away and our server was really nice. We went on Monday night so it wasn't busy and the ambiance was enjoyable.
google avatar

Abhinav K.

Yelp
I definitely recommend this place! It has a great vibe inside and the staff is really friendly. If you like expresso martini definitely try that and Bee Knees. We tried their Blackened Redfish, Caesar Salad, Chicago dog and Honey Truffle Chicken Pizza and everything came out perfect and was delicious.
google avatar

Maggie S.

Yelp
My husband and I went to DL Macks last Friday for dinner and had a wonderful experience all around! We were seated on the patio, which I was initially disappointed about, but the service and casual ambiance ended up being great. We ordered the deviled eggs, Caesar salad with chicken, and chicken fingers with fries. All were delicious! I absolutely loved the Caesar - it was not your average Caesar salad. Will definitely be going back.
google avatar

Catherine W.

Yelp
I was super impressed with the food, the service and my drink at DL Mack's. The spicy margarita is no joke-- if you aren't a fan of spice I would steer clear because this drink is the real deal but I loved it! For lunch I had the Italian combo and the fries and they were very flavorful and delicious. The fries are very thin but coated in seasoning. I'm not usually a fan of thin fries but whatever seasoning they used made them irresistible!
google avatar

Camden H.

Yelp
DL Mack's is fantastic. If you like thin and crispy bar pizza it's the best pizza in Dallas. The ambiance is outstanding the service was above and beyond and overall it was a perfect experience and we will 100% be returning soon.
google avatar

Omar S.

Yelp
They had the whole patio booked during happy hr which I'm sure is against their policy.
google avatar

Anne S.

Yelp
Instructions: 1. DON'T anticipate a wait. Just make a reservation. You may also want to request seating in the main dining room instead of on the patio -- the patio doesn't really have the same vibe. 2. DON'T order the house gin martini...it nasty. On the second round, my partner upgraded to some sort of Japanese gin martini, and it was waaay better. 3. DO order the honey truffle chicken pizza. But maybe ask them to slice it like a normal pizza? IDK, or not. Just be forewarned they're gonna cut it in squares. Is that what thin-crust Chicago-style pizza is? Whatever, it's TASTY. Other Comments: The staff was awesome. I asked if they could do the Hudson House blue-and-gold martini (since they're owned by the same restaurant group), and they said they'd try...well...I ultimately just got a martini with blue cheese olives, but I saw them frantically looking up the menu first, so A for effort. (NOTE TO THE OWNERS: If you'd cross-train your staff in those awesome Hudson House martinis, well, that would make my day, because I'd rather eat pizza than fish with my martini.) They also let us bring our own dessert for a birthday celebration and were extremely welcoming of this when we called in advance to make sure that was okay. Thanks, friends.

Ella G.

Yelp
Overall DL Mack's is a great spot. It's sort of a hidden gem and never too crowded. The food and service is excellent. I will definitely be back soon!

Brittanie A.

Yelp
I decided to stop by this place one Sunday after church and it was great. My waitress was nice and recommended all the good things. Great music, drinks and food. What more can you ask for?

Ben A.

Yelp
DO BETTER VANDELAY We at ate the Hillcrest location Saturday evening and have never been more physically hot and uncomfortable in a restaurant. I don't know how our awesome server- Emily, was even working. It was well above 80 degrees in the dining room and the humidity so high everything was slippery. Some other friends came in, and when they felt the temperature and heard our misery first hand, all six of them left. My wife and her friend, as well as countless others were fanning themselves with menus. Thankfully Emily brought us cool towels- very helpful! I'm can only imagine how the customers on the patio felt, let alone the poor servers dressed in those ridiculous uniforms based on the heat. Good food and recommendations were on point as usual, but did not make up for the atmosphere. Gross experience had by all.
google avatar

Mackinzie B.

Yelp
The food and ambiance were great! The spicy pasta was the star for me. Worth a try if you're in the Dallas area.
google avatar

Porcsha L.

Yelp
I saw this place on Instagram and it did not disappoint! The service was top-tier, the food was good, and loved all of the cool photos

Stacey Y.

Yelp
Have been counter for years - frequently for their happy hour. While service has been trending negatively, today was exceptionally poor. Condescending waite who charged us full price - asked to speak with someone to give some constructive feedback and he sent the chef out. First, he acted like he did us a solid and charged us for standard pizzas on happy hour. Wasn't until later we realized this was what we should've been charged the first time. Overall, poor experience and we will sadly not be going back to this location.

Gabriella Z.

Yelp
Used to be my go to spot in dallas but the food was not stellar on my last visit. Rigatoni flavor was no good and pizza soggy
google avatar

Suzanne C.

Yelp
Went to the location off Royal - service is always great. Everyone is friendly and depending on the time of your reservation you're quickly taken to your table. We ordered a few apps, deviled eggs and fried mozzarella then main dishes were chicken tenders, Caesar salad, garlic shrimp scampi and spicy rigatoni. Drinks are really good as well and pricing is decent for the area. Family friendly but also good for a girls night out dinner or quick drinks after work.
google avatar

Jessenia B.

Yelp
This was place amazing. First time here and Emily was our waiter. She has now set the bar so high for this place and customer service. She gave us all the details and helped us make sure we ordered what we liked! She was attentive and extremely kind! If you haven't come here, COME HERE!
google avatar

Taelyr R.

Yelp
Really not great. Ordered delivery through DoorDash and regret it. Two stars because it was edible but the wings were seriously lackluster and the "Mack sauce" is just buffalo which I can not eat. The Spinach Artichoke Dip is okay after some doctoring but these prices are seriously outlandish for the value
google avatar

Clayton B.

Yelp
Love this spot. Interior is what I would call elegant and sophisticated yet approachable. Nice place but has a very home style feel to it. Elevated American dishes for the most part. Bartenders are fantastic, had 2 of the spicy Mexican and they were fantastic. For food we had the Caesar, mozzarella sticks and the honey truffle chicken pizza. The pizza was absolutely insane, it has white truffle oil and honey on it and the chicken is crispy. 9/10 experience, perfect spot to grab a spot at the for a date night.
google avatar

Michelle G.

Yelp
Wanted to love this place because I love the other Vandeley restaurants but DL Macks does not live up to the others. The service and manager were awful. The manager didn't take our requests seriously even when I talked to him about them. The food and drinks are good but be careful what they sell you on happy hour...make sure it's actually covered in the happy hour prices.
google avatar

Naim M.

Yelp
Long time fan of Drake's and Hudson House, so had to check out DL Macks! Stopped in for lunch mid-week, was able to grab a reservation but arrived 30 minutes early and was seated right away. We started with the fries, which were thick cut wedges of crispy fluffiness! They were served with 3 sauces, one being ketchup, but the green sauce was by far the favorite. Only downside is the amount of fries for the price. Would've liked a bit more of them. I had the cheeseburger which was delicious. Can tell why it's a favorite. My wife had the chicken tenders. She didn't care too much for them unfortunately. I also tried the Negroni, and found it to be well made and the presentation was great!

Yelp
Updating my review because we went back for dinner. I was pretty disappointed in their lack of gluten free + dairy free options. Thought their deviled eggs were really good though.
