The Next Must-Visit Wine Country

"D.O.C. is a restaurant in the Douro Valley known for providing one of the best dining experiences in the region, thanks to chef-owner Rui Paula. It serves exquisite dishes, such as perfectly pan-roasted grouper on a cake of crawfish meat poached in a flavorful fish-and-shrimp stock." - Ray Isle

Incredible dinner! From the staff to the view to the ambiance, and of course the exquisite food. My husband and I had a wonderful time. We decided to go al la carte but of course we wanted to share evening. The kitchen kindly split all of our meals and paced them out instead of bringing all together, which really enhanced our experience. Our server Felipe was so lovely and helped us select an excellent bottle of wine to pair with our meal. Our favorites were the pasta with cheese sauce and the apple dessert - both unique and surprising in their own way! If you’re in the area I can’t recommend a meal here enough. There is parking onsite and outdoor seating.

If you're looking to experience new flavors, textures, pairings, and innovative ways to prepare well-tried food, this is the right place. You will be surprised and delighted. The staff is attentive and friendly, the view is great, and for those who enjoy it, you get to have a look at the kitchen through a ceiling-mounted TV. I just wish it would be a little more zoomed into the dishes being prepared. If you're in a hurry or starving, this is not the restaurant for you. Service takes its time and there is room for conversation between plates. This is not criticism, it's just how this restaurant is meant to be. I will return!

We were blown away by the attention to detail and quality of the food here! Every dish was packed with flavour and warmth which was perfect for a cold rainy day. The staff were also very knowledgeable about their wines and recommended a great white based on our preferences. Would recommend if you’re staying in the area!

Had lunch here with my wife. Decided not to have the tasting menu and had 3 courses instead. Service was very good. I had the scallops to start, they were cooked perfectly but very small. My wife had the foie gras which was very good. For main course I had the pork neck that was cooked exceptionally well. My wife had the fish that was cooked very well. For desert I had their take on a tiramisu. The look of it wasn't very appealing and it was a little strange to eat but it did taste very nice. My wife had the chocolate desert that she said was the best she had tried. In between courses we were served some palet cleansers. Overall a very good experience, the only downside was we felt a little rushed between the starters and mains.

What an incredible experience. Featuring an amazingly creative menu, truly dedicated staff, and astounding location right out over the Douro river. Recommend the 7-course prix fixe menu with the paired 7-course local Douro valley wine selection, including two wines custom crafted to match this menu. The presentation was spectacular, but the surprise ingredients and flavour combinations were extraordinary. 7 courses became 10 when the chef added 3 surprises. Just a fabulous experience all around.

As many have said, underwhelming and overpriced. The food was basic and extremely overpriced for what it is- there are some incredible fine dining restaurants in this country - this is not one. We had to get up and serve our own wine several times because they came to our table & didn’t do it or would only fill one person’s glass and walk away. They served my appetizer to someone else at our table and never actually told us what it was, so they didn’t know it wasn’t what they ordered, so I never got what I ordered. The wine list is extensive but extremely overpriced - their suggestion they gave us no one actually liked, but they didn’t care that no one liked it- we’re the type of crew who would have ordered multiple bottles of wine, but since no one liked what was in our glasses, we never went further. Overall an extremely underwhelming experience. Best part about the place the the river view.

Wonderful location, excellent ingredients and taste combinations...nice flexibility to let us order different tasting menus...delicious fish, seafood and pork (let down slightly by uneven service; some waiters rushed through introduction of dishes, then ran away before any follow-up question...). Great value so still full marks👍
