The 14 Best Bars On The Upper East Side - New York - The Infatuation

"Doc Watson's is a useful place to know about because it works for almost any type of casual drinking situation. It’s open from noon until 4am most days, and the sidewalk seating and backyard work if you want to drink outside while the sun is still out. If, on the other hand, you want to hole up with a dark beer and drink away your sorrows while watching any New York sports team you may support, there’s a long bar and a dining room with a lot of TVs." - Bryan Kim, Matt Tervooren, Neha Talreja

Doc Watson’s Review - Upper East Side - New York - The Infatuation

"Doc Watson’s is a bar on the Upper East Side with street seating out front, a long bar inside, and a small beer garden out back. They do a solid Happy Hour during the week until 7pm and after 11pm, along with nightly specials on bar food. On the weekends, if you’re looking to get brunch while watching sports on TV, you can get food with two drinks for $16." - Matt Tervooren

Working in the area so decided to give it a try. Cool little Irish bar. The weather was beautiful so they had the whole place open good cross breeze. Bartender was cool. Took care of us. I had a John Daly and the Chicken Cobb salad. The salad was good. I did dig in a little before the picture so it is bigger than the photo. Was a Saturday so the menu was mainly brunch and breakfast.

The turkey burger was basic—nothing to write home about. But the lettuce, tomatoes, and onions were fresh, which helped. Fries were hot and crispy, just right. The spicy chicken sandwich stood out: crunchy, well-executed, and the bacon took it up a notch. The maple waffle fries were a pleasant surprise—crispy, sweet-savory, and unlike your usual side. Service was spot-on across the board.

Picked up takeout from here. I was craving a good sheppards pie and Doc Watsons didn’t disappoint! My hubby got corned beef and cabbage and a side of wings. Wings were a bit spicy but he still ate them and he said the corned beef and cabbage was good too. Next time I’d like to enjoy the atmosphere there with a nice cold beer!

In NYC for the day and needed a spot with good food and smooth drinks and we were very happy to have landed here. Sitting by the windows in the back was a vibe too. 2 entrees and 6 drinks came out to about $150 and I’d pay it again. Bathroom is a bit small for the ladies but it was clean.

I ordered the beef stew and got this. It’s more like a beef soup. Which would’ve been good if that’s what I wanted. This isn’t stew. Irish stew that I’ve had before is thick and hearty. This is a light broth. I was so disappointed. But the cottage fries and curry sauce were good!

Google
Went here on a cold Sunday and it is such a cozy place! It’s decorated beautifully for Christmas and a great place to watch some football. I got the spicy bowl, per the recommendation of our waitress, and my fiancé got the curry wrap. They both had an excellent amount of spice and were tasty. They also really filled them up with chicken. Hard to find a place in the city that gives you that much protein for a reasonable price but they do it!

Google
What a joy and treat to visit this one. The owners surely know what he's doing! Great decor, affable staff, and a lovely back yard. The beer was fresh and the food was top notch, crispy fries and chix strip with delicious dressings to accompany. Keep it up keep it real DW !

Google
Dear Mr. Owner. I visited your bar after a few years of absence and I have known this place for 25 years and I found that nothing has changed. This is good and bad at the same time. The food is still decent but even the best food in a room that does not have air conditioning is not very pleasant. Technology has advanced and you do not have to install central air conditioning but one air conditioner right above the entrance door is a disgrace and a mockery. The only way to cool down here is to order another cold beer. Is this your way of running a bar? I really have a good opinion of the rest of your establishment but IT IS TIME FOR A CHANGE AND TO INVEST SOME OF YOUR PROFITS so that customers feel more comfortable.

Yelp
This review is just about the stairs down to the downstairs seating area. I was there last Sunday for a birthday brunch and our group of 10 or so were seated in the downstairs area. The area was fine, but the staircase has a last step that is not the same height as all of the others, and since it was so dark down there and the color of the steps blend into the floor, we had two people from our party fall down at the last step and hurt themselves. Both of them fell soon after arriving, and one of the people who fell was my mother who ended up fracturing a bone in her foot. After the first person in our party fell we let the waiter now, and the response was along the lines of "oh yeah people fall down that last step all the time." My mom gave her name and number to the manager on call but she hasn't heard from anyone. Bottom line they need to put down caution tape or do something to alert people to the different height last step.

Yelp
Food fresh but very very bland. I like their wine and espresso martini! Food vastly under seasoned.

Yelp
Went here for brunch and enjoyed my experience, was a good solid meal. Lunch menu is available for brunch which is awesome (I.e. not restricted to just the brunch menu). Solid brunch deal a dish plus 2 drinks where you can mix and match, both alcoholic and non alcoholic. Got the all American breakfast which was solid and I got what I signed up for. Good portion. The potatoes needed more crisp and less of the Cajun seasoning it had. Overall good experience, 3 stars + .5 so round up to 4, cause the brunch deal was such a good deal and service was good as well.

Yelp
I was looking for a bar to watch the first Eagles playoff game and the others were full so we ended up at Doc Watson's. It's a very spacious restaurant with good service. I ordered the cocoa bomb drink that came as a hot cocoa, chocolate bomb and a cup of warm milk and Baileys. It was delicious. We also got the nachos, fried chicken sandwich, and flatbread. The stand out was the nachos. They didn't use regular tortilla chips, they used something more light and fluffy. Would definitely come back.

Yelp
Food was great! They had both vegetarian and gluten free options which is always a plus. The food alone would definitely get this place 5 stars as it was also priced well, however the service was slow. We were sitting outside and did have to go in to have our server come out, it seemed like they were understaffed because the server did seem busy.

Yelp
Classic Irish pub on the upper east side. Stopped here on St. Patrick's day right before the rush. We were seated in the beer garden downstairs. You could tell they were very busy and or short staffed because our waiters seemed overwhelmed. The fish n' chips were ok; they were more batter than fish. We really enjoyed the sliders. They were very flavorful and perfect for sharing. Very on theme for the holiday. Overall, great place to hangout for a drink and catch a game.

Yelp
An old staple from the upper east side ' order the onion rings w/ friends and got a lava Cake for dessert, the onions rings are to me still a fan favorite to get ! Not greasy ! But enough to enjoy. We sat a 6 top here on a Wednesday night, that is quite! Our waitress was updated on whether we needed as folks, knifes and our food order! We sat in da back! Where it was more Quiet! They have a backyard which I never was able to see! But it's there!

Yelp
Quintessential bar, food, moderately priced drinks. The bartenders need a reality check... they're not gracious... don't do it
google avatar

Yelp
I came here on a Saturday and they had some Memorial Day Weekend deals. I got an aperol spritz ($7) and my dad got a Kona beer ($6) and we shared fries ($8.50). The fries were hot and crispy. My aperol spritz was not that flavorful. We sat outside and the sidewalk was very slanted.

Yelp
Very solid NYC bar. Was pleasantly surprised at the Fried Chicken Sandwich. The focaccia bread and fried egg were both shockingly good. I don't have a complaint regarding my experience at Doc's but I don't think it stands out when compared to some of the other spots on 2nd ave.

Yelp
Cool Irish bar in Manhattan. I had their Irish breakfast and it reminded me of Ireland. Great job Waitress was friendly and talkative great customer service. Wish I had more time to hang out in New York

Yelp
Overall rating: 4.6 Super cute, watering hole in UES. I was in the area meeting friends and I really felt the local vibe which is hard to come by these few days. I got an espresso martini which was really good, but the sliders were OMG AMAZING. Very filling, very delicious. I was expecting the fries to be alright, but damn, they were good too! I'm so surprised for a chill bar. I wouldn't mindddd if the prices were more reasonable, but I don't expect anything else from eating in Manhattan. I'm not going to let the price affect how good this slider was! I sat at the bar and the service was normal. It did get very crowded after I ordered, so I missed the rush. I recommend giving it a try if you're in the area!

Yelp
Average Irish pub. Lots of tvs which is nice for viewing a sports game. Nothing too else to remark on.

Yelp
Went for drinks only. Kitchen closes between 10-11pm. But what a cute place for some late night drinks. 5/5 would recommend for an after dinner dive bar feel.

Yelp
If you are interested in the World Cup they are playing all games, except for the ones at 5am and 8am. They also offer happy hour from Monday to Friday from 12PM to 6PM. $1 off from beers, wine & spirits. For reference the gin and tonic was $9. About the place, the food was great. Huge portions, a bit pricy for what's offered but since their sizes are big enough to share or take leftovers I would say the price is fair. We saw the game today at 2.00PM and there was only one girl working as hostess, server and bartender. I was surprised she was able to handled all guests at the bar and tables with such grace. I never felt the service was compromised because it was only one person offering it. She was great. It is a classic Irish pub, setting & decor and the food variety is good and diverse with some classics. We had the wings and the shepherds pie both delicious. I also read they offer bottomless brunch on weekends. They are also currently offering what it looks like a delicious thanksgiving menu for only $44 PP which is a great price for a 3 course dinner in the area. Will definitely be coming back to check their brunch.

Yelp
Place to be for live music, dancing and St Patrick's day celebrations. Great prices and always a great fun time with friendly people

Yelp
Went on a sort of first date/ meet. (about time!). Small cozy spot with some small high tops up front jammed in. I'm kinda tall ( 6"1 190) so space was kind of really tight. The bar was packed with everyone watching the games too. Had brunch both of us Bloodys I opted for the Turkey burger which was good and it came with these mini fries( best way to describe them) my guest had a regular burger and she liked it too. Service was good, friendly and in obtrusive ( just about perfect for what was needed). So why 4 and not 5 stars ? Too many tables jammed in. I fully understand the need to maximize real estate but it could be done a bit differently.

Yelp
I was visiting NY and needed a place to watch the UFC fight on a Saturday night and this was the closest spot. Place was packed with a young crowd, but super friendly bar tenders, great atmosphere and energy, and got a good burger and fries, all while watching an absolute war between Mackhachev and Poirier. If you're looking for a packed, high energy, friendly place, this might be the right spot. If you're looking for a quiet, intimate place, you might look elsewhere.
google avatar

Rachel S.

Yelp
Great for watching sporting events and basic cocktails. I didn't have food this time but there are other places in the area I would go to for food first. Service was okay. The bartender when I was there just looked exhausted. The bathroom could use some attention too.
google avatar

Sabrina P.

Yelp
Solid spot for a quick drink. Can't complain about the beer. There's a long bar but also additional seating in the back and downstairs. We got a table in the back and the waitress was very friendly and kind. We also got the chocolate ice cream -- they serve it to you in a mini ice cream carton which was unexpected but cute! Maybe would come back to try some of the their food.

Yelp
Great place for brunch! Family friendly and good food at a good price which is becoming harder and harder to find in this city now.
google avatar

Thomas M.

Yelp
Have not been here in about 15 years, and it brought back a lot of feels. Sat on the patio which Im not sure still exists at the time of this review, but was nice to sit outside and enjoy a beer on the streets of NY. Mix of local NY beers and regs beers. Good bar food, albeit greasy, but wasn't mad about it.
google avatar

Steph W.

Yelp
Their breakfast is a set menu and has 2 drinks included (alcoholic included too) I ordered the Benedict with salmon and it was delicious. I asked for the French fries well done and they actually did so! They were super crunchy and perfect. There is also an outdoor section with several heat lamps to keep us warm. Happy camper
google avatar

Yelp
Good greasy bar food, great spot for a drink and watch a game. Been here many times from the day I moved to the city on the UES. Never have had any issues with service before. Prices are reasonable, especially compared to other spots nearby. Smack in the middle of some great restaurants too.
google avatar

Vanessa B.

Yelp
Live music and a plethora of TVs. We were able to watch football, baseball and the US open all at the same time. The food was only okay. A bit small for the price and overly salty. Drinks and the service were good.
google avatar

Jen S.

Yelp
Outdoor dining is really such a fun and unique addition to the city and our new way of life and some places just really nail it. They nail it. The food here is fantastic. The service is perfect and the seating arrangements outside make you feel safe and secure. I highly recommend the brunch menu. For $20 I got a cheese burger and two mimosas. The burger was phenomenal. Perfectly cooked and huge. And for this price, it may be one of the cheapest and best deals you can get on the UES. They don't rush you. They let you enjoy your experience and it's also super fun for people watching as the block is pretty busy.
google avatar

Dane W.

Yelp
Food is great the Guinness is cold. Great wings. I never had a bad meal there. They also had a night where Irish bands would play , service was excellent and my Guinness kept coming till I was done. It was reasonable .
google avatar

Rosinha A.

Yelp
Really friendly bar, reasonable prices. I'd stopped for a drink, then noted they have happy hour M-F from 12 to 7. Enjoyed their wings and veggie sticks.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite Irish Pubs in the UES that I have been too often to for lunch or just to watch late night sporting events with friends. A very cozy friendly atmosphere where you can easily meet new friends or just enjoy watching a game on their flat screens at the bar. My favorite experience at this restaurant is the walk to the Men's lavatory. It's a narrow staircase that has short steps that require good balance while walking down. If you have any issues going down the stair case such as tripping, falling, or just rolling down the stairs. Once you find your way back up the stair case, just ask for a check, say thank you to the bar tenders with a favorable tip, and then go home for the night. I love the Doc Watsons's.

Yelp
Passed by and decided to step in for a quick bite to eat. Was seated immediately and got a nice view by the window. The service was fast, the aura was modern and lively. There was a bit too much Caesar dressing for my liking but outside of that the food was good. We ordered off the appetizer menu- which I'd say is a good portion for one person as a light meal.
google avatar

Austin S.

Yelp
Grabbed a quick drink here. Waitress was kind and friendly. Great pub to pop into for a drink if you're on the UES and not looking to deal with crowds. They have both bar seating and table seating. Would go back.
google avatar

Carolyn B.

Yelp
My friend and I stopped here for a quick bite ordering chicken strips with a (mango?) dipping sauce and Philly sliders. Each dish was $15 and portions were ample. The sliders (3) were composed of chopped beef with american cheese mixed into it on soft rolls. Everything was delicious. We also had an iced tea and a Miller lite (bottle) both satisfactory. I note a few people seated near us were enjoying fish and chips (2 large pieces of fish with plentiful fries). A special compliment to our waitress who was friendly and very efficient. Great job on her part. I note we sat at a table in their outdoor shed which has openings on the sidewalk side with fans located on the wall near the ceiling. It was a very hot evening and while the fans circulated the air, they didn't really help much in cooling the shed. That aside, I would highly recommend this Irish pub as the food, reasonable pricing, and great service make it a winner!

Renita A.

Yelp
Good casual atmosphere. Good place to catch a game inside or grab a couple drinks after work. Food wise the nachos are a great choice.

Char L.

Yelp
The bartender working the day shift is very helpful and friendly - I've been twice for Zoom meetings and she's been nice enough to let me have the lower party room to myself while it wasn't busy. I had the cheeseburger and the chicken caesar wrap and both were delicious.
google avatar

Pablo V.

Yelp
Quick recap: this place is half bar half restaurant. And it works. Excellent place to catch the game or fight while also being an excelent sit down joint. This place has good drink specials, good sit down food, and great bar food. I Cem here for brunch once and while it's nothing to brag about, it was overall good. I've come here plenty to watch a game or fights and the bar food always hits the spot. This place has friendly staff and the place has plenty of space with its downstairs lounge. Highly recommend this place to hang out, especiaLly if you're looking for a calmer bar scene.
google avatar

Kelli F.

Yelp
I often come here to visit old friends and meet some new ones. The bartenders are exceptional and this bar is a staple of the UES. And if you are lucky enough to catch a live music night, then you scored. The pulse is electric. Everyone knows your name here!

Sandra R.

Yelp
My Turkey Burger was amazing and the service is incredible! They followed all my food allergies, turned down the heat and just a great place to watch football
google avatar

Liana L.

Yelp
The price is great ($16 for entrée + 2 drinks during weekend brunch), the ambiance is cute, the service is fantastic and the portions are huge - all great stuff. Honestly, if I didn't cook so much, I would probably give Doc Watson's 5 stars; they focus on pretty standard brunch food. Unfortunately, the menu overall doesn't interest me that much and the food is done fine, but not spectacularly. I initially came here because I wanted the jumbo crab cakes and Raymond loves corned beef hash, but it turns out that the crab cakes are no longer on the menu. The corned beef hash is, though, and it's good. So we came back because it is a really great deal. Unfortunately for me, I don't like ordering the same thing as the other person I'm eating with, so I was forced to stare at the menu for long minutes while I eliminated everything and then went back to try to figure out what I would get. Since I don't drink alcohol or coffee and I don't want to drink too much juice, I found it hard to justify any of the options for the price. (It's well worth it for Raymond, who gets a coffee + mimosa + the corned beef hash. I heartily recommend this combo. 5 stars). I got the smoked salmon hash the first time and the traditional Irish breakfast the second time. Both were fine, but I wasn't thrilled with my entrées; instead, I kept trying to eat Raymond's corned beef hash. Oops. (The black & white puddings were actually sausages - nothing weird). Overall, I do think Doc Watson's is great - the waitresses are really sweet, the food is good and the prices are low.

Yelp
Great brunch spot. Good choices, cheap prices and you get two complimentary drinks included- can't beat that! Would highly recommend getting there earlier for seating as this place definitely gets quite packed for brunch.
google avatar

Yelp
Here for a large gathering. Nice artificial grass/ flowers wall in their partially covered outdoor space downstairs. Got their signature burger with blue cheese, bacon and egg. Delicious!
google avatar

Jim A.

Yelp
Could be a 4 star. The beer garden was kinda cool - secluded outside with a view of the TV. Average pub food with limited beer list. Didn't get offered all our drinks with our brunch.
google avatar

Melissa P.

Yelp
I came here for brunch and it is a pretty good deal for brunch in the upper east side. About $17 for a brunch entry and 2 complementary drinks (can be alcohol). I got the avocado toast with scrambled eggs and a side salad and my husband got the all American breakfast. The avocado toast was very good (even though it was more like a guacamole like texture) and the eggs were perfectly cooked. The salad that came with it was a nice touch. My husband also enjoyed his breakfast and the bacon was perfectly cooked (very crispy). We also sat outside in their backyard which was nice.

Yelp
Walked in after completing 22.6 mi for the Nyc marathon for the first time. Ordered fish chips, wings, and mozzarella sticks along with Guinness. The fish had a nice crunch, but not a lot of seasoning. Best part was being able to finish everything as a marathoner. Enjoy

Yelp
Dropped in here last night to watch the game after working late and needed a bite to eat. Saw the Tuesday craft beer and a burger/fries special for $12. Good deal and Lagunitas IPA was a nice choice to wash it down with. Have to say I enjoyed this quickie meal here. Had the Smokey BBQ burger that was piled high with frizzled onions and accompanied with those round cottage style french fries. Large sized pint glass of beer with it. No complaints as the burger was cooked just right, was substantial enough, the fries were tasty, and the beer was cold. Plenty of screens around with the ball games on. Sat at the bar where the service was attentive and friendly. Doc Watson's is a typical Irish type pub as seen here on the UES. Victorian like lamps hang from the ceiling. Dim lighting. Lots of pictures on the walls. Dark woods. Large bar. Plenty of seating. Back room dining area. Ouside seating on the sidewalk. Flat screens all around. 90s - current rock music playing. Food and drink specials during the week from 4-12pm. It's a nice, homey, and almost cozy atmosphere. Looked like a dozen beers on tap. Standard mix and a few crafts. Lagunitas IPA was a decent one, and I also saw Boddington's, Guinness, and Angry Orchard by the glass. Pretty large sized food menu for a pub too. Did not experience any of the slow service as others spoke about in their reviews. I'm sure it does get slower when really busy as it can be on weekends. Received my food quickly and cooked as ordered. Was asked a few times if I wanted another beer. All good. Also, there was a chalkboard sign on the sidewalk promoting $5 frozen drinks, $5 sangria, $5 Angry Orchard, and $5 summer comfort cocktails all evening. Brunch on weekends includes two drinks. I just might have to make this bar one of my new local haunts!

D B.

Yelp
Bad food and drinks but more importantly absolutely terrible service. Waitresses were beyond rude and we could hear the two from our section laughing to one another about us and customers in our surrounding area. Ours never came to the table unless we called her over. Some of the worst service I've ever received anywhere. There's too many good bars and restaurants on the upper east side to ever waste your time or money here.

Antonio Z.

Yelp
Great weekend brunch with 2 drinks. American breakfast and 2 Bloody Mary. Ask for table seating at the back.

H P.

Yelp
One of my favorite brunch spots on the UES, mainly because the prices are very reasonable but the food is really good. I come here regularly and they never disappoint. I can here for dinner once but I feel like their brunch menu is better
google avatar

Yelp
Sunny warm Sunday Morning. Random stroll on 2nd Ave. Spotted this amazing $16.95 brunch deal (1 entrée + 2 drinks) and just could not resist it. Their brunch menu is very traditional with egg benedict, waffles, French toast, salad, burger... etc. I got the turkey burger and it was very good for its price, but at the same time, burger is burger. I have never had a burger that blew my mind away. For the drinks, I got two Bloody Mary's and they definitely got a good kick of spiciness. If you don't like having alcoholic drinks, they also have coffee, juice ...etc. We got a seat by the store front and the windows were wide open. With the 70 degree summer breeze softly brushing past my skin and a yummy glass of Bloody Mary, I could not ask for more!

Yelp
Watched the UFC fight here, and the best part of the night, without a doubt, (besides when CM knocked out some guy from Philadelphia) was when Conor won, the bartender jumps on the bar, pours liquor down some hilarious laughing mans throat, then jumped down and threw napkins in the air like confetti. A big bar with lots of seating, not sure about the food, the kitchen closes around midnight. But the service itself is very good and fast! I did see some people turning on the AC since it was getting pretty toasty inside... thank goodness they did! They might consider putting on the AC!
