The Best New Restaurants and Food Carts in Portland, March 2025

"As of September, Northwest Portland has a new dumpling house that prioritizes local meat sourcing: Dodo Dumpling brings a robust slate of steamed and pan-fried dumplings, with renditions like traditional beef or pork and cabbage; curry chicken; chive, egg, and shrimp; and corn and cheese. Starters include cucumber salad and luwei beef (a Taiwanese preparation that involves braising the meat); its chickpea-packed wanza noodle dish is available if you want something bigger than dumplings. Espresso and matcha lattes, plus fresh-squeezed lemonade, are also on offer." - Paolo Bicchieri

Dodo Dumpling was an absolute joy to eat at. Their dumplings are, to me, hands down the best in the city. Their dumplings flavor in all of the samplings we tried were so delicious and comforting and the sauces that they pair them with elevate the experience to some sort of dumpling nirvana. The beef noodle soup was absolutely delicious. The broth was so dynamic and the flavors had a depth that made me want to eat it every day. It comforted the soul. The ambience was so cozy and the staff was awesome! I ordered a few things to go, not pictured, and they kept everything in a warmer for us so that when I got home the dumplings were still the perfect temperature and not at all over cooked or tough. We were there for over an hour, that actually meant a lot to me. I brought home the Corn and Cheese Dumpling and the Veggie Dumpling to my partner and those both were excellent! The cheese and corn dumpling had a great tang to it that pair so well with the sweet corn. The Vegetable Dumplings were perfection. The filling was so fresh and the texture was not over cooked so you could identify what veggies they used in them.

We finally were able to check this place out as it was a nice day to go out. They have front patio and back patio seating. We also realized they had a small parking section in their driveway (after we found street parking). We ordered an assortment of items to share - sweet n sour pork ribs, wanza noodle, black Truffle pork dumplings, beef dumplings, and pork cabbage dumplings. The wanza noodles were good and had plenty of flavor. The Truffle dumplings were good as you can taste the hint of Truffle in them. I did like their pan-fried option for the dumplings, which we got for the beef ones. They had a good exterior texture, while the inside was still juicy and not dried. Overall, it is worth checking out.

Went here for the first time today, it is delicious! They were super helpful with choosing what to try (I'm a dumpling fiend and will eat my weight in dumplings given the chance... If they're good). The dumplings are obviously, and delightfully hand made and while the facility is small, It's cute and very much like the other places in the area. We will be coming back! We got the pork, beef and chicken curry dumplings. You can have them either pan fried or steamed, and we chose some of both.

Google
Wow! This little hidden surprise in NW Portland has some of the best, most fresh dumplings I've had in Portland! The chicken curry had all the right flavors, the beef was a well executed classic, and the lobster Mac and cheese dumplings weren't bad either if you want to be a little adventurous. The beef noodles were so fantastic! The deep flavor of the broth is perfect for those sunny but chilly days. I'm definitely coming back!

Google
This place looked cute so we stopped in and ordered the dumplings, cucumber salad and beef roll. The food took over 30 minutes and we were the only ones there. When we finally got the dumplings they didn’t even bother putting tops on the sauces and they were spilled everywhere. What a bummer. Wouldn’t recommend especially considering the prices.

Google
It was pretty good. To me it’s more of a summer spot. There is only one 4person table inside which felt a little weird. Food was good and they offered bottled/ canned beer which I liked.

This place was absolutely amazing! I will be definitely returning. New favorite spot for dumplings.

Google
JUST LIKE THE BIRD This spot will go extinct. Slanted porch is sketchy and unpleasant to be on. Limited seating. VERY slow service. Expensive. Difficult parking. It took 33 minutes to get my dumpling order. This may have been acceptable if they actually were good. The burned grill bits scattered about my order (not the welcome char on the dumplings) made eating my $16 order extra unpleasant. I found the filling to be under seasoned and the sauces served with the dumplings lacked zing or good flavor. I will be hard-pressed to try going here again. Edited to Add: I liked the crispy on my dumplings. I didn’t like the dirty griddle debris sprinkled on my order as a result of improper griddle cleaning. That shouldn’t happen. Owners obviously don’t have it together and are grappling with their inability to serve a consistently good product.

Yelp
We ordered the beef noodle soup and the steamed cabbage pork dumplings. The good: the dumpling flavors were there. Although the dumpling wrapper was a bit thick for our taste. The broth of the beef noodle was good. The bad: The noodles in the beef noodle soup were over cooked which resulted in the egg noodles to clump and have a slimy taste with no bite. The price the portions were very small, my two year old finished the whole bowl by himself. Overall: The staff are friendly and helpful, flavors are authentic enough. However based on how little portions you get for the price, there are alternative places where you can get the same dishes that are cheaper/better/bigger.

Yelp
Wonderful little spot in the NW area. The entire menu looked impressive with dumpling flavors you won't see anywhere else. The location thankfully had heat lamps on this chilly day and the seating faces the main street sonit made for cute people watching. We ordered the beef and curry dumplings. One steamed one fried. The oder came out at the perfect temperature, so no need to wait for cool down. The curry was SO good, and dipping sauce just added to that familiar curry flavor. Beef was also excellent and each bite had quality to it. I'm excited to try their lobster one on the next visit!

Yelp
I came here a couple of times a week ago only to find the establishment to be closed both days during their regular operating hours. Guess they closed due to running out of dumplings. I finally gave them a third try today, and they were actually open. The attendant told me they will be closed every Monday to prep for the week to mitigate any future closures. I ended up joining their month membership to take advantage of the half off price on dumplings. And, ordered the traditional beef, and chive, egg and shrimp dumpling. With the membership, I also get one free drink a month, so I ordered a matcha latte with my membership. My first impression on the quality of food is pretty good so far. Both types of dumplings tasted fresh and clean. The sauces that came with the dumplings paired well with the dumplings. I am excited to try the other types of dumplings. I would have given this place a 5 star review for the quality and service. The loss of 1 star is due to the closure that occurred and the lack of clear communication.

Yelp
I came here for lunch, and when I arrived I was the only customer, but when I left it was getting busy. It's seems like it gets more foot traffic for dinner. I got the egg/shrimp/veg dumplings, the cucumber salad, and the matcha latte. Of all the items, the matcha latte was my favorite, and not because the other items weren't good; but because the latte was amazing! The dumplings were made fresh, and the cucumber salad also seemed to be made fresh as well. Staff checked on me when I was served, and when I was done. I appreciated the attentive customer service. They have a covered porch area which I imagine will be really nice when it gets cold. They also have an outdoor patio which is cute and surrounded my trees that provide shade. Some things to note about this business; you can choose between having your dumplings steamed or fried. I had mine steamed and they were great. You can also choose from several different kinds of dairy free milk for beverages, making this place a good option for vegans as well as vegetarians. They had soy, oat, and almond milk. They also seem to offer some kind of subscription service, which may be worth checking out for folks who want to eat here regularly. My only points of feedback are; it would be really nice if there was a place to park bicycles nearby. Also, it seemed like there was enough demand for dine-in to justify reusable dishware. I would recommend providing options other than takeout containers for dine in guests. The lack of dishware, however, seems understandable for such a young business. Overall, great service, yummy food, and a cute and quiet ambiance. I recommend it!

Yelp
What a find. We were driving by and noticed this place and are so happy we did. Delicious food and great service! Definitely try the lobster mac & cheese dumplings and the broccoli salad.

Yelp
Dodo Dumpling was great! Decently sized menu, large and easy to read. Service was quick and kind, the space is well thought out and clean. Dumplings are tasty, and lemonade wasn't too sweet! I'll be back to try more!

Yelp
Way over priced. The restaurant is super cute even though the seatings are very limited. We ordered the cabbage pork and the chive shrimp steamed dumplings. The first impression seeing the food- they were appetizers and definitely not a single-order meal. The dumplings were tiny and definitely could use more stuffing. The flavor wise I was happy with the chive ones, they were fragrant and on point. Not so much for the cabbage ones, the texture was saggy and lack of the crunch you'd get from the traditional cabbage pork dumplings. We actually went to a second restaurant after eating the starters here.

Yelp
my rating is closer to a 3.5, this new dumpling spot in nw portland is in a cute location! the inside is smaller, seats maybe 10-15 people. during my visit, i ordered to-go on the phone. when i got there, i had to wait a bit longer because they were busier that night. dumplings were great! cucumber salad was a nice palette cleanser, could have added a bit more taste. noodles were cooked well, but the taste/texture was not my cup of tea. if the noodles were put in the chili sauce it might have worked more for us. lemonade was tasty. cannot wait to see this restaurant improve as time goes by. will go back for dumplings for sure.

Yelp
Cute little spot for dumplings. My tip is to always ask to pan-fry your dumplings instead of the traditional steamed versions, because this way you always get that perfectly crispy bottoms. The menu is a bit fusion, with some fillings you wouldn't expect for Chinese dumplings such as lobster mac and cheese and kim chi chicken. It's definitely a small spot, so as it gets popular at peak times, it can be a bit tricky maneuvering the line to order, which is squeezed in the enclosed veranda with the bar counter seating. (There are a couple of tables inside the "house" and a few tables in the front yard with heat lamps.) I think the pricing can turn off some people because it is on the high-end, but the dumplings shape and juiciness is legit. I had the traditional pork cabbage dumpling and it had great flavor. Another time I had the chicken curry dumplings, which are chicken dumplings served with a side curry dipping sauce. It was tasty. I ventured to try the miso mushroom veggie dumpling and I think that was my least favorite, had a bit of an off taste to me but vegetarians will probably appreciate it. The service is super friendly and helpful in this casual self-service dumpling spot.

Rolla L.

Yelp
Nice setting. Although tasty, the 10 small dumplings weren't worth the price, $18 + tip. I'll probably go elsewhere in this NW neighborhood. There are abundant food choices and better prices for what you get.

Yelp
Amazing dumplings and super friendly and accommodating staff. I agree with others that it's a little expensive but they are very delicious and worth every penny....so treat yourself to some of their dumplings and enjoy the meal.

Yelp
Got the miso mushroom veggie dumplings, and they absolutely do not disappoint. The dough's texture is perfect, and the flavor is definitely there. Only caveat I can think of is that the indoor eating area is pretty small. Bar with 7 seats total. There's outdoor seating, but it's uncovered and this is rain country. As far as the price goes, it's 2024. Legit everywhere is like $14+ per plate. I paid close to $10 for a latte somewhere recently. Like...yeah, it's a perpetual shock, but it's not like this place is charging much more than anywhere else. I'll come here again when I'm in the area.

Yelp
We had such high hopes and sorely disappointed. These dumplings were so bad! Not only were they improperly steamed, the dough was gummy and just terrible, almost as if undercooked, but also overpriced. $40 dollars for two orders of dumplings and a salad! Not the kind of price that you'd expect from a "cart like" location. Expect your dumplings to come in paper containers, small plastic portion cups for dipping sauce are barely filled, and hot oil is left unfilled at the counter. This was not worth the $40 experience

Yelp
I have gotten dumplings from this super cute little dumpling shop twice already and it does not disappoint. I have had the shrimp dumplings, the mushroom dumplings, and the broccoli salad. They are all fantastic but the mushroom dumplings are hands down my favorite. The owners are very friendly, I highly recommend this restaurant.
google avatar

Sarah S.

Yelp
The lobster Mac n Cheese dumplings were a bit overpriced. However, I would like to come back and try the more veggie-friendly options!

Robert C.

Yelp
The dumplings are excellent , as is the noodle soup. It has fresh bok choy, and a generous portion of beef. The curry chicken dumplings have just the right amount of spice. Service is excellent., and very reasonable prices.
google avatar

Jenny R.

Yelp
Small selection of dumplings but they do them well. It's set up at a house with only the covered front porch for very limited seating (about 6-8 ppl total) so be prepared to take your dumplings to go. Tried the pork and the vegetable dumplings and both were SO good. Cucumber salad was nice but for me, needed a little something (maybe vinegar for bite). Dipping sauces were on point so will be back to try more another time.

Yelp
I have been visiting Portland for several years and this new restaurant is quite a gem to find. I had a really nice meal there with my niece. And a couple days later, I couldn't wait to share their food with my sister and brother-in-law at a picnic watching the swifts. I look forward to coming back. The pork and cabbage dumplings are my favorite.

Yelp
I had the Chicken Curry Dumplings and Corn & Cheese Dumplings, they were so so flavorful and delicious!! I can't stop thinking about the Chicken Curry Dumplings. I also had the cucumber salad, it was so fresh and flavorful. The customer service was really friendly and welcoming. It made me even more excited to try their food. The restaurant is cute, has a closed in patio seating area that's modern and cozy. I decided to get the chocolate chip cookies for a dessert, not thinking they would be anything more than a regular chocolate chip cookie, and wow let me tell you. That is one of the BEST cookies I've ever had. Overall, a wonderful delicious experience all around, I literally want to go back tomorrow and get all the same things and try some new stuff too.

Yelp
Love the ambiance! Staff were super friendly and service was excellent. Food comes out fast and tastes authentic and delicious

Yelp
Yum! So delicious! The miso mushroom is great and I love the chili oil added on the side. Definitely a great neighborhood spot to check out

Yelp
Popped over at 8:15 on a Saturday night sooo excited to try the miso mushroom dumplings only to find the place locked up. No signage or anything indicating early closure. Such a bummer especially considering for once we hired a sitter and made the trek from SE. I hope to one day make it back to actually try the food, but in the meanwhile do yourself a favor and call before making an arduous journey.

Miranda R.

Yelp
Dodo dumpling is successfully managed by two hard working people who provide a comfortable atmosphere to enjoy handcrafted, high quality dumplings. The food was creative, delicious, and I left full & happy. The prices are good and the service is fast:) My friends and I highly recommend this incredible dumpling spot!

Colton R.

Yelp
Just went for my first time, and it was fantastic! The prices were extremely fair and the dumplings were great. Will be going back.

Peter P.

Yelp
This is in a quiet side street in a cute old house with outdoor dining an a enclosed and heated porch dining. The dumplings are fantastic and a wide selection of choices. We went with the chefs recommendations and they were delicious. We also had the cucumber salad and the broccoli salad and these were both filling and the dressing was very tasty. Highly recommend this new restaurant.
google avatar

Mark G.

Yelp
Dumplings filling need more taste to accurately to their menu description item . They were tasty indeed fresh and hot! pass on the cucumber salad nothing like the picture on menu. It was served in a plastic container drowning in hot sauce .... Had to ask them to dump some sauce out .too bad . They have potential so I'll try another item next time .

Andrea C.

Yelp
LOVELY setting and DELICIOUS dumplings. Try the sweet and sour pork rib. The dumplings had the best texture. Go give them the support they deserve. Great service.

Joy G.

Yelp
The dumplings were tasty, the truffle dumpling was not worth the price, very little truffle flavor, the service was chaotic, this place is best for take out i think, very little seating.

Yelp
Yeah. Right. Pretty much same as the first two reviews. Super cute, super clean place. I called with 5 minutes before they closed and they stayed late for me. Really grateful people. My fam loved the dumplings. My favs were the corn and the chicken curry. 6 out of 5 stars. And the place is only 3 days old. I'll continue to support and recommend.

Lauren N.

Yelp
WOW!!!! The owners were so nice and welcoming!! Ambience is cozy and the outside lit tables give cute/casual romantic vibes. Food was FANTASTIC!!!! We got the curry dumplings and pork & cabbage dumplings. So fresh and wow good quality. Was pleasantly surprised that each dumpling is paired with its own sauce and that took the food to the next level! From the service, business owner husband & wife's story and hospitality, to the yummy food - Can't wait to come back!! Thank you Dodo Dumpling!

Geni C.

Yelp
This is a charming little dumpling shop located in what looks like a home. It is clean and you can sit on the glass in front porch to eat your dumplings. There is no dining room. I had the shrimp and chive dumplings and enjoyed everybody. Window service is provided. The service is very nice. I would make a suggestion that you could get a variety of dumplings in an order versus having to have all your dumplings be the same.. Such a nice little spot.

Fred F.

Yelp
The food and the service was amazing, definitely adding this to my list of favorite spots

Justin C.

Yelp
It was a really nice atmosphere, seating was cute and the host was super kind and inviting. The service was great and we felt taken care of. We got the miso mushroom dumplings and the pork dumplings and it was so good.

Yosuke Y.

Yelp
Over priced and not very flavorful. Not sure why there is hype for this place. I would avoid or only come if you love paying a lot for disappointing food.

Lori S.

Yelp
This is the second time I've been to dodo dumpling, and it continues to impress. Got the chicken curry dumplings, which were so delicious and flavorful. Awesome homemade curry filling with curry sauce. Also got my favorite, corn and cheese dumpling. Service was good and they were very kind. Had good recommendations of new things to try. There was more seating indoors, and it was able to accommodate a larger group of 5 and some tables in the back.

Maria M.

Yelp
Delicious dumplings, freshly made on site. Something for everyone, authentic Chinese, fusion and vegan too! Food was ready quickly. Restaurant is located in a cute historic house. We ate in the front porch area, very cozy. I had a machta latte for dessert, was tasty. Will be back.

Hannah A.

Yelp
Second time here, and the service was EXCELLENT. I called ahead to order so we could take the dumplings to go to watch the swifts at Chapman. We arrived before the food was ready and they were so kind to my toddler, who wanted to chat. After we left with our food, they realized they'd forgotten something and called me and DELIVERED IT TO THE PARK! Totally above and beyond, 10/10. The food is great, too; my child wolfed down 10 dumplings no problem and asked for more. So glad they've moved into the neighborhood.

B. A.

Yelp
Luck was with us, we found metered parking close by at 6 PM on a Saturday night. This is a sweet little restaurant in a small 1890s house, very neat and clean. You walk up a flight of stairs (no handicap access) to the glassed-in front porch. There is seating looking out to the street, on high seats, and a little window with an iPad and a friendly person who will take your order as you stand there and check out the menu. Or - you can go inside (white walls, bright lights, and an ear-piercing, at least to me, 'order up' bell) to choose one of the two (only 2!) tables that are there. There is beer, lemonade, and probably another few soft drinks from which to choose. One of the owners (do I have that right?) came to take our order. We chose broccoli salad (fantastic, a Japanese recipe), cucumber salad, also delicious. Then mushroom miso dumplings, steamed, and pork cabbage, pan-fried. Service was friendly and prompt and the dumplings were perfect. The spare, unpretentious and thrifty setting and the all-Ikea furniture was appropriate. We will definitely come back. I feel pretty strongly that these folks are making a huge effort to provide great food, and they succeed.

Kane L.

Yelp
Wow. So many Vegan options ! Owner is amazing. The store is so cute and omg the chili oil is fantastic
