13 Houston Restaurants Serving Stellar Central and South American Cuisine | Eater Houston

"Dodo’s Chicken is a hidden rotisserie gem, and happens to be one of several Colombian restaurants on that particular block of Richmond. The chicken comes out tender and juicy, and only gets better with the addition of their homemade creamy and spicy dipping sauces. A side of fried, sweet plantains is something you should never pass up, and this is no exception. Arepas and fried yucca add a classic Colombian touch to this satisfying meal." - Christina Autry

Mad that I just now found this place. The wood smoke chicken is juicy & super tender. Best rotisserie chicken I’ve had. I’ve only had Colombian food a handful of times. This place has some of the best maduros, empanadas, red beans rice I’ve eaten. Don’t sleep on this place. Service is slow for togo orders I would call ahead.

Sean Stockard

Google
This is the absolute best rotisserie chicken in Houston. Juice, Flavorful, Meaty, and Tender. Amazing sides (the brown beans and hush puppies are THE BEST) and reasonably priced!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ A Colombian gem in every bite We visited Dodos and were absolutely delighted. From the moment we arrived, Don Jaime—who has over 30 years of experience in the art of roasted chicken—welcomed us with warmth and exceptional care. He took the time to explain the menu and helped us choose the perfect dish. The roasted chicken was outstanding: juicy, golden, and full of that comforting Colombian flavor. The side dishes were a total highlight—the chicken soup served as a side was homemade and deeply flavorful, the ripe plantains were perfectly sweet, and the fried yuca was crispy on the outside and soft inside. Service was fast, friendly, and truly attentive. One of the gentlemen from the counter even came to the tables to check if we were doing well. The prices are fair, the portions are generous, and the atmosphere is warm and welcoming. Without a doubt, this is a place worth coming back to if you’re looking to enjoy delicious, authentic Colombian roasted chicken with a side of heartfelt service. 🇨🇴🔥 Very thankful

Google
It’s pretty good chicken if you’re in the mood for fresh grilled chicken and some Latin flavors but would not recommend for a clean atmosphere that is the only downside, extremely outdated, extremely hot I don’t even think they have AC on. The tables you have to clean yourself and they’re are all filthy including the trash cans that are all filled up to the BRIM! I mean come on you can’t take the trash out and wipe down some tables? Idk it’s decent but wouldn’t recommend to sit and enjoy your meal.

Google
This place was absolutely amazing. I catered a big order for a clinic and not only was it incredibly tasty, it was incredibly affordable. Any time I’m in this area, I’ll make it a point to order from them. Hands down one of the best places to eat.

Cindy Nguyen (Cindy Nguyen Fishing)

Google
One of my favorite places to get Colombian food in the city. The rotisserie chicken is amazing. All the Colombian sides are fantastic and the empanadas are absolutely my favorite ones in all of Houston. They’ve gotten significantly smaller over the years, but they’re still amazing.

Google
Dodos Chicken is a humble Colombian wood-grilled chicken rotisserie place where the star of the show is the Chicken. It is a small counter service place where you place your order and then take it and eat outside or in a bigger dining room adjoining the place. This area has 4 different Colombian restaurants stone's throw away from eat other. But this restaurant stands out as it just serves a humble chicken with some sides that do not take away the spotlight from the chicken. There is always chicken spinning on the rotisserie and that just tells you how busy they do get. The rush is not too bad as most people tend to get their food to go. The chicken is served as quarter, half, or whole chicken. You can choose white or dark. We tend to get the quarter chicken with a side. Our favorite side there is the sweet plantains (Maduros). A side note if you ever get a chance to try sweet plantains with cheese go for it you will never regret it. They even have savory plantains (Tostones) with rice and beans. I have tried their empanadas in the past as I love empanadas and the ones served here are decent but nothing to go rushing back to get it again. I love their salsas that come with the chicken. I tend to drain the liquid and use the rest on my chicken. It is much spicier than traditional Colombian fare, it seems more Mexican.

Google
The food tastes so good! What I love most about this restaurant is that they do not drown their food in condiments or sazon. They let the natural flavors come through. The red beans white rice and chicken are heaven.

Yelp
EVERYTHING is good here. I've been coming for over 20 years here. The place is old, but the food. OMG! I highly reccomend a slice of tres leches. GREAT JOB ALL!!!!

David L.

Yelp
I have been passing this place for over a year without stopping to taste the chicken. What a waste of time. This is the best chicken I have ever had and I eat a lot of chicken rotisserie over charcoal. The food is great. The prices are very reasonable. Can't say enough good things.

Yelp
So awesome that I can't wait to go back. As you can see I was being a pig. No, I didn't eat it all. The gentleman(possibly the owner or Manager) that took my order let me try the fried Yuca. My fave was the bread with the cheese in it. So good that I will suggest to everyone I know and to strangers.

Yelp
It's not everyday that you get to run into such an amazing restaurant. I ordered the 1/4 roasted chicken with three sides (red beans and rice, fried plantain and fried yucca with Jamaica juice ). The chicken ... finger licking good. I honestly felt like I just had a stamp on my passport and was in Colombia eating. The location is in a plaza area on Richmond. Parking is available for free and they have three areas--- one where you can order, and outdoor patio eating area and the other half is restaurant dine in style where you can eat as well. I gave 4 stars because of the fried yuca that was the only thing I didn't enjoy... it could just be a preference but those were fried on the extra crispy side which I didn't like. I would definitely go back this this restaurant. It's as close to authentic as it gets.

Claire S.

Yelp
They catered our wedding! All our guests were so impressed and took all the extras home! My husbands family has been coming here for every birthday, special event, weekend, and any excuse they can think of. Chicken is always moist and the aji is our favorite. I am very thankful for their quality

Yelp
#ThankYouThursday Thanks Dodo's for having hand sanitizer, blocking off some seats, and having plexi glass between you and the customers. The beans and rice and chicken were delicious. I wish you had a less expensive lunch special. The quarter chicken with sides is $9. The outdoor seating was relaxing with a breeze coming through. The lunch special comes with chicken, three sides and a soda. I also chose boiled red potatoes and small arepas. I chose a Colombiana soda but paid $1.30 for it. Dodo's is a casual place where you order at the counter. While you get your order fairly fast and considered fast food, it's fresh.

Yelp
This place needs to update the hours it's been wrong for several weeks. I have let them know. Please fix this.

Yelp
This small business was outstanding. I came here for lunch with my co workers. All the food was tasty and cooked well. Service was fast and employees were kind. Lunch special was great too! Chicken (white or dark) and three small sides of your choice with a drink. I chose an agua fresca. Bathrooms clean.
google avatar

Hue P.

Yelp
Went around 4 pm and was offered the lunch special by the cashier. It is a quarter piece of white (upcharge) or dark rotisserie chicken and three sides with a drink. I ordered two fried sides, one being fried sweet plantains and fried yuca (manioc) root. Sides are a large portion. The fried sides were not made to order due to appearance and temperature but were nevertheless good. The black beans with white rice was hot and good. I ordered one of their "aguas" fruit drinks and was charged a small upcharge as well. The chicken was not the fresh ones I saw taken out while I stood in line (i used to work at KFC when we had rotisserie). It was ok only that the meat would not come off the bone cleanly and the wing was not attached. The best part were the two salsas, one red, one green. Very savory and oniony with a little kick. My lunch came to under $12 and I had many sides to take home.

Yelp
I've been dining at DoDo's Chichen (9431 Richmond) off & on for years. The employees don't speak English or they speak broken English, so placing an order can be challenging. The adult females taking the orders and working the cash register don't have appropriate customer service skills or abilities. They are always rude. 11/26/2021 6:40 PM ORDER #90

Yelp
we went to Houston and decided to buy their bun. i've tasted their product here in our area from asian stores.I've tasted their chicken empanada , nothing special. Their fried shrimp and vegetable fritters smells too much onion. And the pastries are not delicious . I don't recommend this place

Yelp
Love it. Have been going there for years. I usually get the family combo, it's pretty good for the price and you get a bit of everything.

Yelp
Delicious food!!! The chicken has a crispy blackened layer on the outside and is soft and juicy on the inside. We tried a number of different sides such as fried yucca, mashed potatoes, red beans, and arepas. The red beans were to die for! The mashed potatoes had cilantro in them which was an amazing flavor combo. The fried yucca tasted the same as about any other place, but that's what I wanted so it is a good thing. They also have a nice variety of salsas to accompany your meal. There was a creamy green, creamy yellow, white garlic sauce, salsa verde, and salsa roja. I only tried the creamy green, creamy yellow, salsa roja, and garlic. I dipped the yucca in them and it was good. Definitely a good spot for comfort food. Both my husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our meal and will be back soon. Update: I went here the other day and the owner was super nice! He gave my husband and I free samples of the cheese cassava (cheesy fried yuca sticks), sweet plantains, and a beef empanada. The cheese cassava is literally to die for. It had me and my husband fighting over who got the last piece! Then the beef empanada was packed with flavor. We are 100% sold on this place!

Yelp
One of my FaV Columbian restaurants. The grilled rotisserie style chicken is delicious and packed with flavor. The chicken is consistently moist and roasted to perfection. I've been visiting this Houston staple for over 25yrs for sure back when I first moved to Houston and worked down the street on Richmond/Beltway. You can't go wrong with the lunch special....1/4 chicken with 3 full size sides. I always go for the rice/bean mix, boiled red potatoes, & the chicken soup. All for $9.99. The staff is always pleasant and very professional. Don sleep on this Latin Gem, on Richmond in a strip center not too far from Gessner.

Yelp
La mujer de enfrente últimamente es muy arrogante y no saben de servicio al cliente, Les piden utensilios y te aseguran que ya viene en la bolsa y no hay nada. Les pides servilletas y les cuesta La mujer no se diga, contesta muy golpeada

Yelp
Rotisserie chicken was on point. Rice was perfect. Salsa (red and green) both delicious. Black beans are black beans. Hush puppies were excellent. Someone told me their tres leches cake is awesome. I went back to order some and the girl said they were all out. It must be really good. Maybe next ti

Yelp
I'm originally a Floridian, if your looking for that Pollo Tropical taste , or that La Granja taste, I recommend going here for a small kick of the Florida taste, not the same , but it's better than other Houston places I've been, they don't have the sauce selections like in Florida, but it will do if you looking for that chicken!

Ruben M.

Yelp
Best charbroiled chicken in town. I been coming to this place for years. I moved away from the area but every time I get a chance, I go and eat
google avatar

Alain L.

Yelp
Best place to get traditional bbq latin chicken. Place is not too nice but food and service is awesome. Been going for 12 years and will still go every week if possible

Yelp
After noticing fellow yelper Belly G. checking in here and reading his review I bookmarked it for when I was in the area. The restaurant was easy to find on Rchmond in a shopping center. A Mexican restaurant is two doors down and I noticed that they had reserved many of the parking spaces near their restaurant with orange parking cones. This kept me from parking close to Dodo's and I had to park in another area of the lot. Walking in I noticed two sections to the restaurant. The ordering counter that also has some tables and then a connected dining room that was much larger. I like good rotisserie chicken and decided on the 1/2 mixed chicken with three sides of Cole slaw, mixed veggies and white corn bread. With tax the cost was a little over $13. The food was ready about 5 minutes after I ordered it (see pic). While th chicken looked good and average in size the size of the sides surprised me. They were larger than expected. There were 8 half dollar sized thin biscuits and the veggies and slaw were in tall containers (maybe 6-8 oz.). I didn't care for the white corn bread but realize others may like that so I won't score it. The mixed veggies of green beans and carrots lacked any flavor as they were not seasoned at all (2). Fortunately some salt and pepper that I added saved the day. I almost never season food at a restaurant but had to this time. The cole slaw was creamy and good in taste (3.5). The chicken was moist and flavorful. Very good (4). The meal was a lot of food considering the size of the sides. Really enough for two people. Next time I will order fewer sides and/or maybe even go down to a 1/4 chicken. Counter service was friendly. While eating the food I kept going from a 3 to a 4 then back to a 3.5 which is what I settled on. I am rounding up for Yelp purposes to a 4 due to the value of eating here. There is nothing fancy here at all but the low prices of the food cause me to round up. Most of the meals that one person would order are under $10 with drink and tax. I would return if in the area. While not a dumpy shopping center this maybe a better lunch option or dinner while still daylight for security reasons.

Yelp
This is my favorite chicken place. I have been coming here for more than 20 years. Seems like anytime I am nearby --it is Monday and they are closed on Mondays. The rice and beans, the chicken, arepas de queso, platanos, bebidas colombianas. The best. Easy to buy the pollo completo and take home to family.

Yelp
This place has been around FOREVER! I moved into the area about seven years ago and I used to come here a lot just out of convenience. I came back last night because I wanted some protein for my gainzzzzzz and I'm trying to eat a little healthier. Can't go wrong with some rotisserie chicken, can you? The people who work here are usually pretty friendly. The chicken is good! It's seasoned right and is rich in flavor. If you get the half chicken meal, you can get all dark, mixed, or all white meat. You can also pick how many sides that you want. FYI, if you're like me and get all white meat, the portion that you get can last you two meals, or you can share between two people. Prices are very reasonable. It's gone up a bit since a few years back, but still very reasonable. The location is a little iffy. But since I live in the area, it doesn't bother me too much. I have a feeling that I'll be coming back more often. Like I used to before.

Yelp
If you don't know, you would've passed this place up every single time you drive down Richmond. But if you know, you know. This is by far the best roasted chicken I have ever had. The flavor is unbelievable, the meat is insanely juicy, and the sides are so good they can stand on their own (But why would you want to do that?). The 9.99 1/4 lunch special with THREE sides is more than enough to hold you over. I usually get the red beans/rice (MIXED), chicken soup, and mashed potatoes. Don't sleep on the arepas though, they are a great compliment. And definitely do not forget the salsas offered, I stick with the thicker salsas as they stick to the chicken more than the traditional chimichurri. The cravings are real with this place!

Kevin D.

Yelp
Supper yummy reliable go to good pricing with good portions plátanos maduros was super fire

Yelp
Mouthwatering chicken, major side choices and super cheap lunch specials. The folks at the counter are super friendly. And your food comes out almost as fast as you order. Chicken: 10 I rarely eat the skin on a chicken but this skin is delectable. The rotisserie bastes the skin into near transparency. It locks in flavor that could cause your eyes to roll back in your head. The white breast meat was magically juicy. Sit and let the open rotisserie hypnotize you. Being more of a friend chicken gal, I wasn't expecting this to knock my socks off., But it did. Sides: 9 Corn on the cob was soggy. Ick. But the black beans were amazing. The cole slaw was big chunks of slaw and creamy goodness. Red and mashed potatoes, fries...lots of great choices. You get 3 choices with the lunch specials...three! Next time I am getting the soup and plantains. They have soft drinks, sweet tea, Aguas Frescas and all sorts of Columbian and Mexican soft drinks. We both had more than we could eat for $20. Parking right out front. Large dining area and a patio on Richmond. We'll be back a LOT.

Satoshi N.

Yelp
Best rotisserie chicken in Houston. A staple in my family for 20 plus years, friendly local owned business. Love everything from the chicken to rice, arepas, fried plantain and empanadas.
google avatar

Alyshía K.

Yelp
I went to dodos yesterday and order half a chicken (white meat), fried Yuca, red beans, yellow rice. Sweet plantain, rice pudding, and tres leches! No! I wasn't eating alone lmao! The chicken was very tender and moist! I wish it came seasoned more though, or a sauce to compliment it! The yuca was for sure over cooked. It was very dry, I couldn't eat it :( The yellow rice was delish! Well seasoned, and so were the red beans! Very good as well! The sweet plantain taste like candy, with the crispy pieces in there...just how I like it! The tres leches was okay, nothing special and the rice in the rice pudding could have been cooked a little longer! For a quick bite to eat I may stop by again, but I'm glad I gave it a shot!
google avatar

Juni M.

Yelp
Place is really good they do a great job. I recommend this place to anyone . The chicken is moist and packed with flavor. The sides are amazing especially the rice and beans
google avatar

Carito P.

Yelp
Good, flavorful char broiled Colombian style chicken, good pricing, friendly cashiers and great amount of food for price. Usually we order ahead if we are short on time and they have everything ready to go. When we decide to eat in there is plenty of space and a good friendly atmosphere. There is plenty of parking, credit card payment or cash accepted.
google avatar

Stephanie Y.

Yelp
Best chicken empanadas! Love their green sauce. I haven't tried anything else here, because I'm a creature of habit and I always order a dozen empanadas... I hope to try their rotisserie chicken some time soon.
google avatar

Marcia T.

Yelp
Can I give this place more stars?!?!? I've been going to this place since college and I have to say it is the best Peruvian Chicken I have ever had!!!! The owner used to be a customer of mine at the bank and after I moved back from DC I went here for some chicken and there he was and can you believe he recognized me!!! The nicest person ever!!! His brother usually works there but I got lucky and saw him. From the chicken to the sides and the price...you cannot go wrong. They season the chicken to perfection!!!! If you are in the area and looking for a meal that will satisfy, this is definitely the place to go!!!
google avatar

Ha C.

Yelp
Come for the chicken ..not the sides Lately I've been in the mood for some hole in the wall or mom & pop joints. All the fancy smancy joints are becoming mediocre to me. We came to dodo's for dinner..probably around 7ish. Place wasn't busy. You can tell the staff was cleaning up since they close at 9. We each got half a chicken meal, along with some sides. Chicken was still nice & moist. Perfect seasoning. Not too greasy like the one you buy from HEB or Krogers. My sides were fried yuca, rice, fried plantains, cole slaw.Biscuit It wasn't good. Very eh...something you would get from a hospital cafeteria, or cheap microwaveable dinners.

Trina E.

Yelp
Great food! May be a slight language barrier but that doesn't change a single thing as far as service goes. Place your order, maybe have a bit of patience while ordering, and enjoy your food! I guarantee you'll enjoy it!!

Anh A.

Yelp
I love this rotisserie chicken place! It's Colombian gem that I have been coming to for years. The food is always excellent and owners onsite. Customer service is great as well. Chicken is obviously a good choice, but the arepas, arroz, red beans and plantains are always good.
google avatar

David A.

Yelp
Great food at a great price. The chicken is always hot and tasty, but I love the sweet plantains and yucca.
google avatar

Todd L.

Yelp
Always wanted to write a review for this place. The chicken here is just too damn good. Been eating here for years. It's near my work place. Took my friends here few days back. Everyone was surprised on how good the food was . Keep it up Dodo's.
google avatar

Kathee T.

Yelp
To me, this is basically a no frills kind of place. Don't expect much from the exterior but more so focusing on the food. I'm not sure if my dark complexion gave off that I speak Spanish kind of vibe lol, or if they just naturally do that regardless. But I didn't mind at all. Got the lunch special 1/4 chicken with three sides, I doubled the red beans and rice added fried yucca, and a horchata to wash it all down. Juicy chicken and tasty red beans and rice. The fried yucca didn't do it for me though. I dipped it in the chimichurri sauce to help put some depth to it. as the stars states, I'm a fan!
google avatar

Loan N.

Yelp
This place does good food cheap and simple. The combos provide so much food. There's white or dark meat (1/4 chicken) with THREE sides and a drink! I got white meat which was moist and really good rotisserie. I got fried yucca (my favorite), cheesy corn biscuit -- weird texture for me, and fries (I would skip). Hubby got dark meat which he liked with coleslaw, potato salad, and corn. It's not a fancy place by any means so don't expect that. Kind of hole in wall type place .
google avatar

Sylvia I.

Yelp
Cashier was super rude. Asked about common sides and he just looked at me like I was stupid. Asked him in then in Spanish since he didn't respond to English and he snapped back that he understood but didn't know. For everything we asked for he let out big sighs. Changed the flavor of soda choice and you would have thought we committed a huge crime. First time visiting and the experience was immediately soured by this employee. Beans and rice were good. Fried plantains okay. Chicken was flavorful but had lots of tough pieces. Won't go back to be "welcomed" by employees like that however!!!
google avatar

Nancy L.

Yelp
We went there today for the first time and everything we got was delicious! The gentleman who was the cashier was super friendly and attentive. We tried several sides and everything was great. The chicken was very flavorful and not dry at all. All of the sides had a great unique flavor. We will definitely be returning and making this place one of our regular spots!

Walter G.

Yelp
I been coming since I was 5yr I'm 30yo now lol Always AMAZING except the yuca lol that's never changed

Stephanie C.

Yelp
I have never had a bad experience here service is great food is always fresh and hot and prices are cheap.

Yelp
Great food and service! Ordered a full chicken with dark meat only and 2 sides was not disappointed!

Anthony Says so

Madeline V.

Yelp
Amazing food & great prices! I would definitely order the chicken empanadas. The quality of the food continues to remain the same throughout the years.
google avatar

Averianna R.

Yelp
This place was a fantastic hole in the wall place with speedy service. Employees very friendly & food had a great taste. The only reason I gave 4 stars instead of 5 is because my yellow rice was crunchy and I had to exchange it for white rice. I ordered the 1/4 roasted chicken with 3 sides (white rice & black beans, corn on the cob, & sweet plantains.) I am an out of town visitor & I will definitely visit this place again the next time I am in Houston.
google avatar

Claudia P.

Yelp
I don't care how a place looks if their food makes me feel like Scooby Doo with a biscuit when I taste it! This chicken is literally perfection... Tops my other West Coast favorites. Juice, normal sized chicken. Not pumped and huge full of hormones. Amazing, amazing "papa con sal" and yucca frita!!! They make this stuff with MAGIC! Cause I don't know how else you get a potato and yucca root to taste so darnnnnn GOOD! I highly Recommend. Dont come here if you're snooty and feel icky eating food in the hood. This place is the shite.
google avatar

D H.

Yelp
Great food. Good service. Clean. Quick preparations. Friendly staff. Legit! I have tried different roasted chicken restaurant and this one by far exceeded my expectations. I would recommend this spot to my friends. I was so full and I wanted to try more. But that means I just have to go back to try it again.

Sonia D.

Yelp
This is my favorite go to place for something good and inexpensive. You can get a quarter chicken with 3 sides for about $8.00! The chicken is very flavorful but the vegetables have no seasoning at all. I guess that may not matter to some. My favorite side would have to be the red beans and white rice. They advertise that the beans are not cooked with any meat or spices....hmmm okay. The owner is usually there when I go and is super friendly and personable.
