"Dominick “Big Doe” Signa began selling hot tamales in Greenville, Mississippi, in 1941. He’d just taken over the grocery that his father opened in 1903. “Papa’s Store,” as the Italian-American family called it, operated successfully until a flood in 1927 (Greenville sits in the middle of the Mississippi Delta). To stay afloat, Big Doe went into bootlegging. When he sold his still for $300 and a Ford Model T, the store became a juke joint that served chili and buffalo fish to the city’s Black community. Revelers who wanted to drink simply hid their booze inside brown bags (Mississippi didn’t repeal Prohibition until 1966). The Signa family operated from the front of their home on Nelson Street, a strip that served as a hub for local Black culture. As rumors of the spot’s delightful food spread, white customers started flocking to Nelson Street. In a reverse of segregationist policies of the era, Black patrons entered Signa’s juke joint through the front door, while white customers entered through a side door into a back room. There, they picked up orders of hot tamales, steak, and spaghetti to-go. As patrons began seating themselves at the small table in the Signa family’s kitchen in the back, the takeout eatery slowly shifted into a restaurant. Living room furniture was swapped out for more tables. Within a few years, the back became too popular to man without backup. Big Doe employed family, converted the whole ground floor into an “eat place,” and came up with an informal menu (it was never printed). Doe’s original chili, hot tamales, steaks, and spaghetti are still on offer, along with shrimp, fries, salad, and garlic bread. Though Big Doe retired in 1974 and passed away in 1987, the Signa family remains at the head of the historic spot. His descendants and extended family run the operation, cook steak on the same broiler, and greet customers who enter through the old honky-tonk (now a kitchen). The hot-tamale recipe that started it all remains unchanged. Today, customers of all races can enjoy it together in the dining area. Know Before You Go Fans have opened Doe’s Eat Places in other southern locales, all of which pay tribute to the historic prototype in Greenville." - rachelrummel

A Delta Gem! The Original Does. Great steaks. Tender. Cooked to order. Seasoned well. Great people. Great service. This is a must-see Delta experience. The house:restaurant is old. It’s not squeaky clean. You walk through the “kitchen” to be seated. Charm! Lemon and oil dressing on the salad. It’s good. Get some butter for your Melba toast crackers and bread! The broiled Shrimp as an appetizer hit the spot. The bread is perfect for the au jus. The filet is tender, succulent and delicious. All of the beef is seasoned well, tender, and cooked to your preference. It may be just under….. BYOB- liquor and wine and a good selection of beers and seltzers. The homemade fries are divine. The place is old. You enter through the kitchen. This is where white collar and blue collar meet! This is a near century long tradition in the Delta! Great tamales 🫔, too! Go here. Eat here. Return!

A Mississippi gem that only gets better with age!! We drove here from South Mississippi, a total of almost 8 hours just driving today. This was my second time eating here, but the last time was back probably 20 years ago. The food is just as amazing as I remembered it. The tamales, shrimp, and bread were delicious. Has everyone might expect, the steaks were phenomenal. Ordered the porterhouse, and was greeted with a Flintstones like chunk of meat that was perfectly cooked and absolutely delicious. We left our hometown at 2:00 p.m. and got back home at 1:00 a.m. and must say, it was absolutely worth it. All of the staff were so friendly, I hope me back much sooner this time!

Google
Incredible food and service! Get the porterhouse and tamales! BYOB as well. Such an incredible and historic spot.

Google
Had a fantastic steak dinner here, many years ago -- early 1980s I think. Atmosphere is unique, I recall opening the door and stepping into a busy, working kitchen. I certainly didn't mind, but unusual. Did I say the steak was amazingly great?

Geert Wanten

Google
I’m speechless… this is really one of those hidden gems in Greenville MS. The food is fantastic. I’ve never had such a fantastic steak (filet) in my whole life! Don’t forget to try the shrimps too. Greetings from the Belgian one 🇧🇪

Google
There is not enough I can say about old running restaurant. The grill is well seasoned! Along with the staff, they don't miss a beat! We enjoyed the hot tamales, salad, steak and spaghetti and meatballs. You will enjoy being able to sit in the kitchen and walking through the grill area. The grill area is at the front door! While you're on the way to your seat feel free to grab a drink of your choice. Lots of great memorabilia posted on the wall for everyone to enjoy.

As a native Mississippian, I’d heard about how amazing Doe’s in Greenville was for years. For Father’s day 2023 my family decided to make the 3.5 hour one way drive to try it for ourselves. It was worth every mile! The porterhouse steak was the best steak I’ve ever eaten, and the broiled shrimp were succulent and delicious. The atmosphere drips authenticity and the story if the bootlegging founder and his hardworking family who have made this humble establishment a James Beard award winning icon should be experienced by all foodies. I’ve dined in restaurants all over the country, and I’d put Doe’s up against any of them for quality and experience. Our table was seated in the kitchen so we got an up-close view of the process. An all-around incredible experience!

Google
Amazing steak. Awesome staff, and what else do you want? The atmosphere is unique, but I knew that going in. Not a fancy white table cloth kind of place. But smiles, good fries and a ribeye as good as they come! Legit.

Wayne G.

Yelp
Came in with a party of 12. We all ordered steaks(Filets, Ribeyes, Porterhouses) they were all cooked to perfection and the taste was amazing! The waitress although waiting on a couple other groups took good care of us all! Thank you, we'll be back!!

Mitzi P.

Yelp
Everything was absolutely wonderful!! We drove from England Arkansas to Greenville MS just to eat at the Original Doe's!! Well worth the 2 1/2 drive one way There were 4 of us and we had a blast!!

B J.

Yelp
I ate at the original Does 15 years ago and can still remember how good it was. I've ate at several of their other locations. They are good but nothing like this one.

Scott S.

Yelp
Simply incredible. While staying overnight for work I sampled Does and was just blown away. From the moment you walk into the front door, which is in the kitchen btw, you're welcomed like your family and you belong. You simply feel like it's where you're supposed to be. Then that "slap ya mamma" kind a good food is served. I started with the salad. Any salad that comes in a wood bowl is legit. The Filet I had was cooked to perfection and incredibly tender. The fries are cooked in an iron skillet, which you walk by while being seated. This restaurant is what'd you'd expect at mommas house but she can cook the best steak of your life. Can't wait to bring others back.

Yelp
This place belongs in the Smithsonian next to Willie's guitar "Trigger", blues, or the Model T. There's just nothing else more genuine to it's roots than this. Take a step back in time as they serve up a big ole slice of Americana. Or rather, dinosaur cuts of perfectly cooked beef, novel delta tamales you'll want to order by the dozen, and a simple but satisfying salad like your grandma used to whip up. Doe's has stood the test of time, and I hope to make the pilgrimage, nay reunion, again soon, because when you visit you feel like family.

Tara G.

Yelp
I came all the way from New York and it was worth it. I've wanted to try the original Doe's for a long time and it was a great trip. The tamales are amazing and the Porter House was perfect. While I definitely couldn't eat the whole thing, my daughter and I did pretty well. The service was great and the ambiance is exactly what makes Doe's unique. If you love steak and road trips then this is the place for you.

Jasmine R.

Yelp
Food was good, but not as good as the price said it should have been. I got a ribeye, cooked well, just bland. The salad was the best part of the entire meal. This place came highly recommended from coworkers, and it wasn't worth the hype. Service takes a long time just to even get your drink order. Then the odds of getting a refill are slim.

Jack C.

Yelp
So the locals said we had to come and try this place out while we were in town. They warned us it's nothing crazy awesome but it's that hole in the wall that you have to say you went to. The menu isn't anything crazy but I can say try the tamales. They are good and worth at least one. The salad reminded me the old school home made quick dinner salad as a kid and it was good. Just ignore how much oil is on it, you will survive. I really enjoyed the tender cut of beef and it wasn't a small piece l. Lastly the service was great and everyone there was so friendly and nice. I will be stopping back by the next time we are in town.

Lucinda V.

Yelp
My coworker recommended as I am from out of state. It is Byob liquor or wine but they do sell bottled or canned beer and similar type drinks. We had the salads, shared a tamale order, chili, and cheese appetizer, then also shared the ribeye. It was huge and enough for 3 proper servings. Everything was delicious, steak cooked perfectly. Its not in tge most welcoming area at night but they employ a sheriff through closing so we felt perfectly safe.

Jason M.

Yelp
Insane prices!!!! The atmosphere was pretty neat but cummon. For this area????? Insane

Tom T.

Yelp
This updates two previous, recent reviews. Doe's now charges $82 for a Porterhouse and $60 a filet per the testimony of immediate family members who stopped in to the Greenville site just a few days ago. If this is case, the price-performance value proposition no longer exists.

Dan S.

Yelp
Excellent steak!! I've never had better. This will be a permanent stop anytime we happen to be in northwest Mississippi.

Art H.

Yelp
What's left to say? There's no hype here. It's all true. Salad, steak and tamales. Nuff said. Make a Mecca to Doe's!!

Christine S.

Yelp
Fantastic time there on a Thursday evening. Wait staff Tina and company (we sat by the ladies preparing the food) were fun to watch and converse with. All had been there 25+ years. We ordered the ribeye which was an excellent choice, very juicy and flavorful. After reading the reviews we brought our own red wine, it was perfection. Fries were marvelous too. We did not try the tamales, but that will be our next trip there. Saw several plates prepped with spaghetti and meatballs, they were huge. Thanks for the memories

David B.

Yelp
Stopped in here a few weeks ago with friends that we haven't seen in over 25 years. The service was terrific and the food delicious. Looking forward to our next trip to Doe's.

Joe B.

Yelp
The food was great, really delicious. My steak was the best I ever had. We loved the shabby building. It definitely felt very authentic. Now for the bad: they don't give you a menu. You just have to know what to order or ask them what they have. This surely works in their favor because their prices are insane... extortionate is the first word that comes to mind. Shrimp baskets are $31 each. Side salads (though delicious) were very simple iceberg lettuce with a simple dressing (and small) and were an additional $7 each. Our 6-year-old daughter's spaghetti with tomato sauce (no meatballs) was $10. A half dozen hot tamales were $10 and they were tiny. My steak was $64. Yeah, it was huge and absolutely delicious, but come on... I ordered the second smallest steak they offered. Lastly, I used the men's room while we were there, and it was not a pleasant experience. The wall-mounted water heater was dripping on the floor and I had to stand in a pool of water, and there was a window hopper air conditioner in the window with an extension cord precariously daisy-chained above me. All I could think of was that cord falling into the pool of water and frying me as I was taking a leak. I'm not a snob, nor am I afraid of paying a premium for a good meal (and experience), but I can't understand how this place can be so popular and get away with these kinds of prices with a ramshackle dive-bar setting. It was an enjoyable meal and we had a fun time, but never again. No thanks.

Joshua S.

Yelp
Doe's is always a favorite among both locals and travelers. It's quite famous, attracting a lot of famous patrons. Along the walls, there's tons of old pictures and memorabilia. Service is quick, and everyone is always friendly. Their portions are massive so be prepared. Typically, it's pretty busy and crowded for dinner, especially on weekends.

Jana C.

Yelp
My steak was soooooooooo delicious and so indulgent. Not even going to try to express the char or the juiciness. I believe the steak was the very best. Shrimp was very nice as well Salad was truly gross and disgusting. Nothing but lettuce, not even altogether very fresh (had to pick out and throw 3 leaves away), and it comes dressed... with something that tastes like pure salt. No acid balance. So horrible. I appreciate most learning about how in history folks would come through the rear portion and roll their four footed animals right alongside the side there. Depressed portion of town, most notably the African America side of the tracks. My great uncle 's store Bings is literally just east of this historic joint that is oh so quirky and full of ghosted walls that I coaxed to speak to me Can watch them making frites or salad in the main room. Or walk a few steps down the ramp inside and sit in the adjoining space Only Greenville could boast a place like This! CA prices

Dan L.

Yelp
Hot Tamale Trail - Stop #5/12 This is a place that I would not normally stop at, except it's on the "Tamale Trail". Tons of "character" which I really like, but this was too much... Dark, run down and dirty. I arrived prior to dinner service, but was able to order the tamales to go! (these were the most expensive tamales on the trail) Tamales wrapped in parchment paper, tied 3 to a bundle with string. Looked like they where machine made (very uniform). Very spicy, dense, and dry, served with crackers. Best part was eating them on the levee overlooking the Mississippi river nearby. Very happy to have gotten the experience, but would not go again.

Phillip ..

Yelp
Life long customer and friend. We always have an excellent experience every time we eat at Doe's. The atmosphere is as unique and delicious as the food.

Emil C.

Yelp
I came at the recommendation of a friend that used to live in Greenville. There's a small parking lot and street parking available. The surrounding area doesn't look at that nice, but you'll be fine as long as you stay at the restaurant (it looks more like a house) and don't wander off. The decor inside was very unique to say the least. The food was pricey, but it was good. It was also very nice to experience good ol' Southern hospitality! I arrived pretty early at 6 pm and was seated right away. I wasn't given a menu as the lady taking my order just verbally told me what they served. I ordered their bone-in ribeye steak cooked medium rare and an order of shrimp, half broiled and half fried. *Bone-in Ribeye Steak* Make sure to bring your appetite! It was a big steak. It was a pretty good piece of meat without having to add any sauces. Man, that certainly hit the spot after having run the Mississippi River Marathon earlier in the morning! *Shrimp half broiled and half fried* To complete my surf and turf, these shrimp certainly fit the bill! Both versions were good, but if I had to choose, I would get the fried version. They were perfectly breaded and came with cocktail sauce and tartar sauce. Keep in mind that this place will most likely be busy for dinner. The front waiting area was filled with hungry folks as I was leaving. If you're in the area and have a hankering for a steak, you should stop in here for a good steak!

Brooks R.

Yelp
If you are in the mississippi Delta and you don't eat ate Doe's, why are you even in the Mississippi?? You must eat here!

John W.

Yelp
When you approach from the outside , you first think as a person from out of town " where am I at and what am I walking into?" However the sign on the front said in business since 1941so we walked in ...... to the kitchen . The kitchen and waitstaff obviously saw that we had never been there before and waived us to a table in the side room off the kitchen. The place was packed and hopping. Tables with red and white checkerboard tablecloths and close together. Lots of kind and friendly local Mississippians to help us first timers. The menu is limited and it works for them. If you came for something other than steak, shrimp or hot tamales you will be out of luck. However if you come for steak, you are in the right place . Don't let the prices scare you. We ordered the bone in ribeye at $66. It comes with home fries and garlic bread. Salad was an additional $7. This steak was so big, I don't think Fred Flintstone could have eaten it. Honestly , it could have fed 3 or 4 people off of one steak. It had to have been a one inch thick 33 ounce bone in rib eye. Very flavorful, as good as any steak I have had from anywhere. Locals told me celebrities come in all the time. It's not uncommon to see Jerry Jones ( owner of the Dallas Cowboys) to fly into town to specifically eat a steak here. I can see why. I would be back. However next time I am going to bring more friends to share . Great job Doe's!

Chuck E.

Yelp
The biggest and best damn steak I've ever had in my life. This place is just old-school cool. I've never been to any of the franchises but I can't imagine that you could recreate this. Everyone should go to Doe's at least once in their life. I wish this was in my town but I wouldn't want to live in Greenville.

David R.

Yelp
Doe's Eat Place has been on my bucket list for some time. No longer, that has been checked off!! When I drove up, a Sheriff Deputy met me and had me park directly across from the front door of Doe's. He was very friendly, giving me advice about when I left, to go straight out and not to hang around. "At the end of this road, they are up to no good! " I appreciate Doe's employing him. I got seated right away and my waitress was super friendly. She explained the menu: 10 oz. Fillet 2 lb. bone in ribeye 3 lb. porterhouses Fried Shrimp Grilled Shrimp Tamales Salad Fresh cut French fries are served with all the above steaks. I chose the Ribeye, medium rare. Every bite was delicious!! The food again was very good, but you must go just to get the experience! There are several autographed pictures on the walls along with several magazine publications that Doe's has been in. Take your time , look around, take pictures and certainly enjoy your meal. When in Greenville, Mississippi, go to Doe's. Go Get Full

Jeff N.

Yelp
I had been to a Doe's Eat Place on the Mississippi coast about six months ago, but it wasn't anything like the original in Greenville. We entered through a storefront and were ushed through a door that led right to the kitchen. It's such a unique place. We didn't have reservations, but they worked us in. The menu is about the size of Mike Leach's playsheet (this means it was about the size of an index card.) There isn't a lot of choices, but we came for steak, and that's what we got. It was so much meat! There was only two of us, and as soon as I saw our sirloin, I knew we were taking a lot of it home. We asked our server, and she said it was between 2 and 3 pounds. It was excellent! We also got a salad with Doe's traditional salad dressing and home made fries. My only regret is that I should have brought a bottle of whiskey in with me rather than buying beer there. We had a great experience and would come back again.

Clark O.

Yelp
Pricey, historic, James Beard winner, est. 1946. Local favorite, walk through kitchen , plenty of local color, service is good

William W.

Yelp
Worth the trip to eat at this location. Old school all the way. Delicious steak with no bells and whistles. Arrived at 5pm to eat early before the crowds and the parking lot was already full. No menu and no frills just delicious huge steaks. And i mean huge. As we say back home, the customers and staff were "our kind of people". Good old fashioned everything.

Michael M.

Yelp
Don't let the setting fool you ! Great food for many years and great local family with tons of tradition and history! Food has gotten pricey but so has everything else these days. !! Amazing taste and always friendly staff and patrons

Corey D.

Yelp
Great steaks and a good time with friends. Everyone is friendly and food comes quick and right.

Patty F.

Yelp
Unfortunately I was underwhelmed by our diner. Waitstaff was very friendly and welcoming but does not offset the very much overpriced dinner. $125 + tip for 3 tamales, 6 shrimp and a shared ribeye. Meh. While the quality of the meat was great and cooked well, it wasn't seasoned at all. Admittedly I am spoiled with a former exec chef husband and don't mind paying for wonderful food. This wasn't it.

Michael H.

Yelp
Don't think because it is off the beaten path and a rustic setting that you are going to get a bargain on great steak that competes with some of the finest steakhouses in America. My wife's filet was $44, but it was her birthday and this place consistently makes the top list of steakhouses in America. And the steak really is that good. The filet was huge by filet standards and it was cooked to perfection. Medium rare just like she likes it, tender and more flavorful than most filets. The location is rustic. It is in a neighborhood and parking is mostly on the street. There is off duty law enforcement directing traffic. When you enter you are in the kitchen and you are greeted by the steak chef. You go through a doorway to more of the kitchen and then into a room where there is seating. There are no menus. The waitress will tell you what they have. According to the large table of people sitting next to us who were finishing their meal, they do a good job with shrimp as well as their steaks. I tried the house salad ($5) and enjoyed their house dressing. I also tried their tamales ($6 for 3) and they were very good. Ever since Alton Brown did his Feasting On Asphalt-The Great River Road show and mentioned that tamales were a staple all along the river in Mississippi I have been wanting to try them. Now I think I will be looking at tamales instead of tacos when I eat at Mexican restaurants.

Michelle M.

Yelp
the filet is my favorite.. always perfectly prepared .. Home fries .. hot tamales, broiled shrimp and more!!... Doe's has it all!

Hoa L.

Yelp
We called in for a 8pm reservation for Saturday. The wait was about 20 minutes when we sat down for food. Took about 30 minutes to get water after placing our orders. Staff was courteous, albeit a bit tired and rushed. Upon walking in, you are welcomed to a blast of hot air from the oven. People with raw chunks of steak are walking in the kitchen. Walk through to enter the central seating area. Asked for some wine glasses, but they were dirty so we got a few more clean ones. I'd advise you to come early or bring your own since they were not very clean at all. The cups were brown, disgusting the lovely brown Mississippi water. The Prime Rib and Ribeye came with fries. The meat cut was good and soft and cooked to medium rare perfection. Flavor wise, the ribeye was better. It's about $50 per entree. This is my second time coming here and I think the first time (about 5 years ago) was the best. Ribeye was good, but not on par with your box chain restaurants. However, I would support locals and the price was decent. On the way out, a gentlemen thanked us for the wait. Come early to get better service, but Southern hospitality doesn't equate to faster service. Keep that in mind or you may be disappointed.

Judy K.

Yelp
Shared porterhouse- medium rare- salad, french fries, garlic bread - and had leftovers! So much food and so delicious with our BYOB red wine.

Dale S.

Yelp
Well, we done done it. Doe's two nights in a row. So much fun. Quite an experience. If food dives are your thing, as they are ours, this oughta be on your list if you have yet to dine here. In the dictionary under "Dive, noun", the definition oughta simply read, "Doe's Eat Place, Greenville, MS". From the ramshackle exterior in a ramshackle neighborhood to the ramshackle interior with yellowed everything, to the table our first night that threatened to pitch everything on it to the unlevel floor on which it sat, to the foot-worn linoleum exposing bare sub-flooring at the end of the table where Aunt Florence has tossed the salad for decades, to ... well, you name it. Dive. Glorious dive. We were fortunate to visit when patronage was light, and we consequently enjoyed so many delightful conversations with the servers and cooks. Leslie, whose husband Joe mans the grill served us the first night and Pat the second. Everyone we spoke to in the kitchen was so gracious and pleasant. The first night we shared a rib eye. This is not your momma's ribeye from Piggly Wiggly. This bone-in ribeye weighed in at two and a half to three pounds. When asked how we wanted it cooked and we answered, "Rare", we were asked, "Regular rare or extra rare?". Hahaha, I'm glad we didn't ask for extra rare for as it was I think a good veterinarian could have resuscitated this cow we were served. I can't say this is the absolute best ribeye we've ever had, but it was delicious. Perfectly grilled and well worth forty-eight bucks. And we finished almost all of it. No small feat for two old timers. The fries are small batch fried in an iron skillet. They are very good and perfectly done, but I would not say "You gotta try these fries!" But you will get to as they come, I guess, with all the meals. We both enjoyed this very simple iceberg lettuce salad. I had it with the proffered additional anchovies, as I love anchovies. (You can share this little salad as you can every dish with no additional plate charge.) Last night we shared three tamales, as being from Texas we have been looking forward to sampling the Delta's version. The flavor of the filling was excellent but we missed the heavier masa coating typical in Texas. Tonight though we had three with the chili and cheese on top. Oh yeah! This rocked. You have to have this. Tonight we had the shrimp. The Secretary of the Interior had 12 fried and I had half and half. Fried/Grilled. Fried were perfect. A light and very crispy batter. And cooked to succulent perfection. The grilled were likewise cooked to perfection by Joe up front on the grill. For me, the lemon was just a little too overpowering, but the spices are excellent and the sauce demands to be sopped up with the grilled garlic butter bread. But lemme tell ya something. Unless you are 18 to 30 or so years old, or Hulk Hogan, or Andre the Giant (RIP), ...if you order salad, three tamales with chili and cheese, and 12 shrimp or the ribeye... you're taking food home. There portions are generous! You're gonna spend as much here for a meal as you would in a high end $$ to a $$$ restaurant in a large city. But it is well worth it, as far as I'm concerned, both for the food and the experience. We likely will never be back to Greenville, which makes me sad 'cause I'd love to see these lovely people and eat their food again. But If we ever get back, you know where we will be eating.

Demalda N.

Yelp
My children treated my husband and I to a meal for our 45th Anniversary. We ordered a ribeye steak dinner to go (one dinner). The Steak was tasty and tender usually with steak I'd have to pick meat out of my teeth afterwards but not with that steak that also made it a delightful experience. The downside is the price $70 with no appetizers or salad or drink I decided not to eat in because I generally tip generously and I would have been tempted to add something else in addition to the fries. I can now check it off my bucket list.

Dan P.

Yelp
Meat heaven - old school, great vibe, yuppies will cry, liberals will protest, but it's awesome, trip back to simple times, great quality, easy menu not 87 items, you come for great steaks, no fancy sauces, no A1. Just great steaks, great service, like setting in grandma's kitchen in the old days, last but not least REAL sweet tea!! God Bless America

Angela W.

Yelp
Are you looking for a unique place to eat? Doe's is the place for you. Everyone must eat at this institution at least once in their life time. I must also mention that this is also a 2007 James Beard award winner. Walk through the front door and you are in the kitchen area. There are three rooms to eat in. The food is simple but first class and don't be looking for white table clothes. It's all about the charm here. We started with the tamales. They are some of the best in the delta. The salad is simple but delicious. Next comes the steak and fries. I can't decide which I like best. The fries are even good cold. Don't miss the garlic bread. If you are an out of towner you will be treated to a feast of epic proportions and true southern hospitality.

I had the pleasure of eating at Doe's twice last week- once with my Uncle & Aunt and again with my girlfriends. Now, I haven't been home to the Delta in 5+ years. I live in Las Vegas and let me tell you, Doe's hasn't changed since I was a little girl. The salad, tamales, bread and steak are a must. I highly recommend Doe's if you are in Greenville. Don't judge a book by it's cover- what's inside is truly amazing. Bring your pocket book too because it's like a fancy steak house with a down home ambiance. I thoroughly enjoyed both of my meals and would go back any chance I get. Doe's is a gem.

Yelp
*** JBF America's Classic (2007) *** #2 *** I almost feel like I shouldn't be allowed to review Doe's because I don't eat red meat.. but I'm going to anyways, since that didn't stop me from stuffing myself silly and having a great time at Doe's last Friday night. After waking up at 5:30 am to catch a flight from LAX to DFW to LIT then driving 2.5 hours... we went straight to Doe's. This is the original Doe's Eat Place, and from what I've been told, the franchises can't hold a candle to the establishment that won the James Beard America's Classic Award in 2007 and that Anthony Bourdain recently proclaimed as "...batsh*t insane. In a good way." I'm told the secret is in the ovens, and that it's the reason that franchises are unable to replicate the Doe's steak. The menu includes hot tamales, homemade chili, garlic bread, house salad, french fries, fried shrimp and grilled shrimp along with their cuts of meat: ribeye, filet mignon, porterhouse, and sirloin. They also have spaghetti, but were sold out that night. I tried everything. Even though I don't eat red meat, I ate an entire tamale (they are small!) and took a bite of the porterhouse. Before you jump to conclusions about my hypocrisy, know that the only reason I don't eat red meat is because, well, I don't like it. So, when someone proclaims that they are eating the best steak ever, I'm going to try it just to make sure that I'm not missing out. I've tried the steak at many places, Mastro's and Lawry's included, and I have to say that Doe's was outstanding. I probably would have eaten more than a bite if I wasn't worried about being sick later that night, and that says a lot. As for the shrimp, both were good but the fried shrimp was better than the grilled... but when is that not the case? I threw some sardines on the house salad, making it even better. Everything was delicious.. the garlic bread, the french fries, the tamales... I don't have anything bad to say about anything here. Definitely come with a group so that you can order everything like we did, since everything is a must order. I love that it's BYO so even though it's not cheap to eat here, you save on liquor/wine. Bring your own corkscrew and glasses though! Doe's isn't located in the best part of town, nor is it upscale at all, nor should you expect the friendliest service.. imagine picnic tables and folding chairs and you've got the vibe.. which adds to its charm. People are here for the food, and nothing else. And they aren't messing around with their food.

Yelp
Amazing. Worth the trip. Worth the money. Loved the atmosphere. I sat right in the kitchen and got to watch some of the magic happen. The service was great and the shrimp and steak were some of the best I ever had!

Yelp
I've been to Does countless times (perks of living in Greenville). The experience goes down like this: as you enter Nelson Street, you'll start to notice lots of run down shotgun wooden white houses. Or, maybe it's night, and the streetlights are dim. Street looks sketchy. No matter. Keep driving until you see a bunch of cars parked around one bigger looking rundown white house with a sign that says "Doe's Eat Place." A security guard, Joe, will guide you to a parking spot. Although he has served as a guard for years (maybe even a decade, not sure), you can tip him and ask him to keep extra watch over your vehicle. At first when you walk through the door, you'll be shocked to see a man (either Little Doe/Big Doe/Big Charles/Little Charles) hauling pounds of T-bones, sirloin, ribeyes, and mignon into a gigantic, flaming hot oven. If it's summertime, you'll be taken over with a wave of humidity and heat. If it's winter, you'll embrace the warm gust of air. You'll also might be shocked/impressed by the deer skulls hanging on the wall to your right. If there's a crowd of people that look like they're waiting, walk through them--politely--towards the hostess (Patricia) by the white refrigerator. (You might get a different lady than Pat). She's sweet as can be as long as you are as well. If it's Friday or Saturday night, she might give a little frown if you didn't reserve a table since it's typically busy then. She'll ask for your name and tell you to wait 15-50 minutes depending on the busyness. To kill time, you could grab some craft beer or import beer from the beer fridge. Just keep the bottle if you finish one or two. Look up the menu online to figure out what you want to order. Btw, BYOW but NOT byob. Does serves craft beers and generic Bud Light. You could also order Greenville's unique brown water, sweet tea, or coffee. Pat will call out your name and usher you to your table. Sometimes, she'll ask you if you wouldn't mind sharing a table with another party. (Pros of doing this include meeting interesting people, possibly engaging in fun conversations, and a much shorter wait time. Cons of doing this include potential awkwardness and no privacy to your convo). As you walk to your table, you pass through Aunt Florence (Flo) tossing her salad. No, I'm not being figurative. I'm being literal. If Does was a tribe or village,Aunt Flo would be like the well-respected elder of that tribe/village. Definitely say hi to her. Food: Definitely try their hot tamales as a side. Their fries are thick, greasy, and homemade. Some are limp and soft; some are crispy and textured. I also like their shrimp although that can be a hit or miss. Their salads are a hit or miss too, but the lemon pepper dressing is freshly squeezed everyday. Even though I've eaten at other non-chain steak restaurants in NYC and Atlanta, Does still has the thickest steaks with the best fat-to-meat ratio. And it's extremely juicy. You will salivate. Service: The waitresses have personality. They've worked at Does for over a decade. They're southern and sweet to the core. Make sure to tip them right! They're quite attentive and caring. Can be slow depending on the amount of steaks that are being cooked and how large your party is. Overall, this is a steakhouse full of personality and delicious steaks. Definitely recommend.

Yelp
Ordered the porterhouse and they cooked the crap out of it, and I expect a $100 steak to come with something other than fries

Yelp
The best way, really the only way, to start this review is with the simple statement: this is the best steak that I have ever had. That's the biggest takeaway of this review. However, if you want more... Doe's is a fairly small, definitely unassuming place. You'll want to make reservations if you have your heart set on going at a specific time because it fills up. The people working here are, in true southern form, polite, very friendly, and great at taking care of their guests. The ambiance is unique and couldn't be more true to it's roots. However, although all these aspects are great, you're probably mostly here for the food. And Doe's is here to impress! We started with the toasted bread for the table, which was nice. It was great at soaking up sauces. We got salads, fries, shrimp, and tamales to eat while we waited for the main attraction, and everything was pretty good! The salad probably could be skipped if you're not a big salad person, but the shrimp and the tamales were both great! We had a hard time saving room for the steak. For the main course we got the T-bone and, as I more or less stated at the beginning, wow. It cut like absolute butter and tasted the way steak would taste in a perfect world. It was actually flawless. Yes, it is that pink, and I'm pretty sure they won't prepare it much more cooked than that, but honestly it doesn't even phase you because it is just that good. If you are ever nearby, or if you consider yourself a steak connoisseur, Doe's is definitely worth a visit! Steak as delicious as the restaurant is unique. A worthwhile experience!

Yelp
Outstanding food and drink, limited menu but the menu is limited. Everything they have is off the hook! Ambiance isn't their forte, but the food is very-very good. Bring your appetite. I have highly recommended this place to family and friends.

Yelp
All about going to locally owned businesses, especially ones with character. We have eaten at the Does in Ridgeland Ms and it was great. The Does in Greenville needs a little work. I'll start with the good, everyone's steaks were great and the home fries with the steak juice is incredible. Our waitress was great, no issues at all. There's more than you can possibly eat for sure, and it's all super sized ( I had the 32 oz bone in ribeye). Now for the not so good, there's only one salad dressing and it's unique, vinegar and oil and some sour components that have lettuce soaked down in it. There's absolutely no consistency to mask wearing other than our waitress. We were packed in a small room (12 by 12), with 6 tables in it! Ours had 4 people, one had 6, one had 2, one had 5, and the large table had 12 people. The waitresses hit every chair as the squeezed through. I was panicking as the room filled. The restroom waiting area serves as storage for the restaurant and also includes the ice maker that the restaurant uses (anyone can access it while waiting for the restroom). You literally walk through the kitchen to get to your tables, on the way out you notice that they are cooking those wonderful steaks in the front room that you enter the restaurant through. So your beautiful steak is sitting on a platter well within 6 feet of whoever's waiting to be seated. When we left there were 4 or 5 people not counting the guy cooking the steaks or the waitresses coming through to get them. In the back kitchen where they make the fries, no masks. And you stop in that room to pay your bill, while new customers squeeze by..... Finally, the whole place needs a real good cleaning. Now, I don't expect this review will change anything about Does Greenville, they will likely continue to sell out and people will wait to be seated and leave extremely satisfied. But if you have any COVID concerns or cleanliness standards I suggest you read this review and go to another Does franchise that is following the rules, is located in a safe area, will let you know what your meal will cost prior to finishing it and doesn't give customers access to your food/drink. If you are ok with all that then Does Greenville will be ok for you.

Yelp
Food and staff were amazing. Tamales were so good. The broiled garlic lemon shrimp is worth the 5hr drive it took to get to Greenville. And to finish it off one of the Best Steaks I have ever had.

Yelp
Doe's. What else can you say? The original. Yep. I've been to this one a number of times and many of the others. This one IS Doe's. It's not the food that makes it it is the place. The fact that you enter through the kitchen. The fact that the sweet lady is always making the salad. The fact that you don't get a menu unless you ask. Don't come here looking for white tablecloths and a cheap meal. Come for serious food in a total dive. Get a steak. Tamales. Fries. Shrimp and of course, the salad.
