Tijuana-Style Hot Dogs Move to Imperial Beach | Eater San Diego

"A farmers-market favorite specializing in Tijuana-style hot dogs has landed a storefront in Imperial Beach, sharing a kitchen with Imperial Beach Buns. Founded in 2010 by Gustavo Tonella, the mobile hot dog stand returned to a storefront after pulling out of North Park’s Twisted Taps last year. Its signature hot dogs are bacon-wrapped franks topped with diced tomato, onion, chili peppers, and a variety of specialized toppings, including a braised-pork carnitas dog and a surf-and-turf dog with shrimp and grilled cheese; fries topped with various ingredients and vegetarian options like a veggie dog are also available. The shared space is open daily from 11 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., and the vendor plans to continue regular appearances at open-air markets throughout San Diego." - Mario A. Cortez

Google
Might be the most ornate hot dog I’ve ever had but it was great. Located connected to the Church by Lost Abbey. Get some beer at Lost Abbey with your hot dog. I got the SdFoodie dog with fried onions, bacon jam, cream cheese. It tastes a lot better than it sounds - rich but pretty balanced would definitely recommend. I would try one of the Sonora dogs next time. Ordering is done through kiosk and they text you when it’s ready. It’s a nice patio but my issue was there was no background music playing! Even though there were a fair amount people it’s kind of awkward. If they just had music in the background it would easily be way better

Google
Such a great place to grab a hotdog for before a game or if you are looking for something cheap($12) and delicious. Dog friendly with a brewery next door!

Brie R.

Google
The food is meh. Things that should have been crispy (fries & toasted bun) were unfortunately soggy and as salty as everything was, flavor was lacking. Atmosphere is fine I guess if you like sitting in a dirt-track dog park on benches, but the service is pretty much non existent as there are no servers because everything is automated: you order through a QR code, pick up your food from a window, and get your own silverware and napkins. It's basically all the bad parts of a mediocre food truck 🤷‍♂️ the 'saving grace' is really having the Lost Abbey next door where we could get good beer. Would not return.

Google
Easy to find but hard to find parking. A fair amount of outside seating, great breeze, several tables with umbrella or tree shade, sandy flooring, dog friendly, and right next to The Abbey Church brewery; if you like a beer, wine, or cider with you hot dogs or burger! The hot dogs were really tasty, there was 7 of us and we all got something different -no one was disappointed! And THE FRIES!!! Awesome fries, very fresh, super crispy, not greasy at all. The churros were so good, cream filled, crisp, plenty of cinnamon and sugar and drizzled with Carmel! Could easily get 2 orders but being good. One thing to note, you use the QR code to order and pay on your phone, then they call your name from the pick up window. They have the fountain drinks next to the pick up window, so you can self serve. Orders are up very quick and are fresh, good & hot!

Google
Decent join next to the brewery so you can get a craft beer to complement a hot dog. Wish their food was a bit less greasy. It is pet friendly so a lot of people bring their pooches. The space outside is lovely and has young olive trees. Will be amazing when these trees mature.

Google
came here before an event at petco park. me and my buddy came. i got the surf n surf hot dog and the cheese and parmesan fries. first time having shrimp and a hot dog combo and it was Amazing!! cheese fries were yummy as well. my friend got he sonoran dog with a chicken sausage the churros he enjoyed it alot. i had one of his churros and it was so yummy! we shared the original tijuana dog. the beef hot dogs were bacon wrapped. lots of seating outside. enjoy that san diego weather. can't wait to come back.

Bryce D.

Google
Nice little outdoor area which is dog friendly in the heart of Downtown! The seating area was spacious and clean upon arrival and no complaints about the vibe. I went here with high hopes but fell short of my expectations unfortunately. I would've like to say the staff was nice, but due to their iPad ordering system at the window it only left you with more questions than answers (questions you might normally ask at a new restaurant about things like top selling items, reccomendations, and overall left a very impersonal experience). The bread was amazing but might have been better toasted on the outside to add texture, the bacon that was wrapped around the hotdog was lost in everything else and never noticed the taste, the hotdog itself had no snap nor real flavor, so my overall take on the food was lackluster. Highlights are the Elote was nice even for being made with what I assume was canned corn, and the combinations for the hotdogs were all great combination ideas, but the overall product just fell short in my opinion.

Google
Doggos Gus is an outdoor patio area in East Village that serves specialty Mexican flavored Bacon Wrapped hot dogs along with some other side items. There is picnic table seating available outside and you can also eat inside at the neighboring bar. To order you go up to a device rather than order from a live person. While I can appreciate that it cuts down on overhead expenses to make people order on devices rather than a live person, to me it was a little bit off putting and made the experience less personal. After placing the order they will text you when it is ready and you go to the pickup window. The dogs themselves were really tasty even if they were somewhat expensive given that its a hot dog, specialty or not. We ordered an Ayyyy Weyyy and a California. The California comes with fries on the hot dog itself. Hot dogs are served in a basket with a side of ketchup. It took about seven minutes to receive the text that they were ready. There is no parking lot here given it’s in East Village so you either have to look for street parking (limited). I would recommend taking a ride share, trolley or walking here if you’d like to go. I took a star off due to the impersonal service.

Yelp
Solid place if you're itching for the Mexican style hot dogs. Came here on a whim since we were craving it, the outdoor seating and vibes are nice. Olive trees are a nice touch! Also next to a brewery so good place to chill around and watch a game!

Yelp
Came here for our first time cause we live down the street and this place has great reviews. It's a cute little place to sit outside on a sunny day. You order by yourself on the little pad outside which is great. After we ordered our food was ready almost right away. We ordered the chilli cheese dog and Sonoran dog. I don't know what I was expecting but I thought the hot dog I was going to get would be better quality hot dogs. It literally tasted like the hot dogs you just go buy at the grocery store. Nothing special and they're actually small if you don't get the jumbo dog. There's a lot of ingredients on your hot dog so your bread gets soggy fast. I think if you're craving a hot dog it's a good place to come. Maybe we'll try something with less ingredients and jumbo hot dog for a better experience next time.
google avatar

Chris S.

Yelp
Based off of what I saw from the last review, it is not bomb. And they are right. Got the Sonoran, 30 minutes. Sorry to do this to you, but they weren't ready for opening day. It's hot dogs, and a little more. If you go here go to the brewery right next door to help with how slow hotdogs are cooked.
google avatar

Karen R.

Yelp
Needed to grab some food before going next door for some more beer. A hotdog restaurant, yes and a very good one at that. I opted for a bowl of street corn, esquites. Boy was it good! Crunchy fresh corn covered with cheesy, spicy deliciousness and add a squeeze of lime!!!! Hit the spot. Outdoor seating in a cozy park with picnic tables.
google avatar

Yelp
When is the last time you had a chili cheese dog? Hmmm.... High school? That's a long time ago!! Found ourselves in the neighborhood and decided to stop in for a "little snack" the hot dogs are large enough to be cut in half if you're looking for a snack. However, who are we kidding you should get the whole hot dog. The chili cheese dog was delicious, the chili cheese was very flavorful and made to perfection. Also, ordered the street corn, it was ok. I would definitely skip next time. The service is quick and efficient. You order online and they call your name for pickup at the window. The ambiance on a Sunday afternoon was surprisingly quiet a few tables were taken one with a larger group who was strictly there to eat and another group of four, drinking an soaking board games. As we were leaving a couple small families walked in with young kiddos. The brewery does a nice job of keeping some activities available to keep them entertained. Great experience. Great Hot Dogs! Bonus: located on Lost Abbye's brewery backyard.
google avatar

Mayra G.

Yelp
Quick service, delicious eats and so nice it's all outdoor seating. The sd foodie dog hit the spot, it was the right amount of sweet and savory which I never knew was possible for a hot dog. Street corn was also good but didn't look like the photo they advertise on their window, it was in a much smaller container.
google avatar

Leslie G.

Yelp
Perfect spot for sitting outside enjoying our perfect weather. Grab a beer from the brewery then head outside and order up. The Baja dog is my favorite, but have tried and enjoyed quite a few others. Don't forget the churros. Not only are the dogs the best in town, the churros are as well.
google avatar

Ariana C.

Yelp
Yes yes yes. The food here is a fair-ish price and the service was quick! You order on a tablet, so try to read the menu prior to avoid delay. It's an outdoor space, so be aware if you go in the winter. My meal was a 10/10! Want to try the fries next. Also street parking only.
google avatar

Yvonne A.

Yelp
Wagyu burger was quite bland. Hot dog, however, was tasty and the bun was buttery and soft. Michelada was very good and generous on the mix. Choose your beer at the brewery next door. Cute patio and nice place for a casual lunch.

Yelp
Shout out to Doggus Gus! I Had them come out for a Baby Q. They showed up on time in the pouring rain. Set up and started cooking. Everyone loved there smash burgers and hot dogs they also had lots of condiments and toppings. My guest are still talking about the food. They were very friendly and did a amazing job. I didn't have to do anything. I was very happy with the price that fed 70 people. if I need BBQ food for a event in the future I will be calling them. Thank you again. Kim

Yelp
Such a great spot to visit after a long day visiting San Diego Zoo which is 10 min away. There's an enclosed yard and you order at a kiosk or online and pickup your order. Great spot to eat w kids. Hubby declared that it was one of the best burgers he'd ever had, my birria dog was also not far behind. Churros were excellent. Ambiance is casual and family friendly. Def recommend!
google avatar

Yelp
Great Sonoran dog. So big I needed a knife and fork to eat it. The Horchata was great too. The staff was friendly and helpful. I'll be back!

Yelp
Hot dog was good and unique - beacon wrapped with crunched up potato chips as topping. The hot dog was ordered outside while I went indoor of the Lost Abby church brewing company building to eat. Lost Abby Church also served a really great stout too! Would come back if in the area of downtown San Diego.
google avatar

Juan F.

Yelp
We showed up with the idea we'd have hot dogs, but after looking at the menu, the burgers looked amazing, so we went with the burgers and some garlic cheese fries. The burgers were amazing. Exactly as expected. The fries were very good, the cheese was like a velveeta thing, but made a gooey delicious mess. You order in the iPad thing, and food comes out the window. No fuss. Easy. Seating is an outdoor patio. (And indoor too - but who sits inside with a great patio!)
google avatar

Juliana C.

Yelp
We happened to come here looking for a snack. We thought we ended up at the wrong place since we didn't see Doggos right away, but what appeared to be a small church which ended up being the Lost Abbey! Doggos is located to the side and back of the outdoor seating area. It was early when we stopped by and no one was around. Simple menu, we ordered the Jumbo California doggo and Doggos fries to share which was more than enough for a snack! The California doggo was delicious! The Doggos fries were fully loaded with cheese, crema, bacon and hot dog bits! I really wanted a milkshake, but it was off the menu for now since they didn't have extra staff to cook and make milkshakes which was a bummer. Staff was friendly. The outdoor seating seemed chill, with picnic style seating. It was a little cold so we took our order Togo. Overall it was better than I was expecting! Thanks for a delicious Doggo!
google avatar

Yelp
Doggus Gus is a kewl burger and hotdog gem. Sporting quality food, I've been back several times and will return. I like their smash burgers, tasty and greasy.
google avatar

Dorian C.

Yelp
Nice outdoor seating in downtown San Diego with a fancy hotdog in one hand and a cold beer in the other, can't get better than that! (+) Service was great and owner was very friendly. Positive vibes all around. Fast casual style: order via QR code or counter at the front. (+) Both the Lost Abbey and Carnitas dog were surprisingly tasty (coming from someone who never gets hotdogs on their own). The smashburger was crisp and had the perfect amount of sauce. Both buns were SUPER soft. Dog friendly area and great vibes. Would definitely come back for a quick bite.
google avatar

Krishen W.

Yelp
I ordered only vegan food here, we got the impossible smash burger and hot dog. The burger tasted soo good! It was crispy and juicy, I really liked the sauce. The vegan hot dog was a bit dry and the toppings were a bit lackluster. We also got the loaded fries without the pork on it. The fries were really good, we enjoyed the cheese alot! The highlight was dessert, which we got the churros. They were freshly made and had a light cream on the inside, they were to die for! Our only regret was not getting then with the ice cream. The seating is all outdoors, which was nice since we were there on a warm summer day! The service was pretty fast with getting the food out too. Lost abbey is right there too, which has a bunch of great beers!
google avatar

Tony E.

Yelp
Alright so I've had a couple of their dogs before at their old place, and I "thought" I had reviewed them but.... Lol So, I've been wanting to try their smash burger... YUM!! It definitely didn't disappoint!! Cooked perfectly with just the right amount of "char" yet steamy and tasty! Their surf & turf Doggo is right up there in taste, along with their Nacho fries and Churros dessert that rivals stand alone churro vendors! The service was great, food came out QUICKLY and they're in the same awesome outdoor seating lot as The Lost Abbey Church Brewery.... Which makes this and that a Heavenly experience!!!!
google avatar

Juan G.

Yelp
Doggos has a creative menu where hot dogs are at the center. And let me tell you they make some really tasty dogs. I ordered the surf and turf dog and it was delicious. It had three decent size shrimp that were season and cooked wonderfully. You can order your dog regular or jumbo and it makes a size difference when it comes to the weenie. I especially love the bun they use to hold everything together. Overall it was an amazing hot dog. The service is fast and friendly. This is an outside seating only restaurant so keep that in mind. Overall amazing food and great service. The only negative thing was if you use the self service kiosk to order. It automatically adds a %15 gratuity fee to your order and it's somewhat tricky to remove it.
google avatar

Yelp
Yesterday I tried the Strawberries with Cream /Frecas con Crema, while at the the Petco Park Experience during Comic-Con. It was delicious & refreshing!
google avatar

Jim M.

Yelp
I really enjoyed the high quality hot dog and the roll is unique very tasty complements the hot dog very well I had a plain dog wrapped in bacon with only mustard and I'm glad I did. The favors came together nicely I'll be back next time to try one with other toppings next Friday and Saturday Great customer service from Jose
google avatar

Aaron R.

Yelp
The large michelada has gotten noticeably smaller and no more tamarind straws I guess
google avatar

Shanty H.

Yelp
These guys are out of this world! They share a space with the Lost Abbey Brewery, next door, and the combination of the amazing beer and what may be the best burger I've ever eaten is sublime. Owner, Gustavo, is often there and as welcoming as one can be. Sergio is a master of the grill. Aside from the excellent food, the always friendly staff (in both spots) makes this a place worth visiting. The food is affordable, the outdoor space adorable. We love the Surf & Turf dog, the Carnitas Dog and, when we're feeling like a real treat, the aforementioned Wagyu Burger is not to be believed. The Doggo nachos (which I don't see on their online menu, but are always available) are a great plate to share. If you're craving a dog for the ballgame, skip the stadium and head to Doggos. If you're lucky enough to be local, make this place a regular haunt! You won't be disappointed!
google avatar

Yelp
Another 5 star place that has just recently closed their storefront. Saddened to hear this. They have some of the best hot dogs ever created. Well-known for years and present at several Yelp events, they are strictly catering now. They were even catered to my work once, and people raved about them for a week! They could possibly be opening another storefront later. They have always been super friendly, and the product is top notch. They are operating at a few farmer's markets around town, namely the Ocean Beach on Wednesdays from 4-8p. I suggest you give them a try, they offer veggie dogs too. The website has detailed info on the farmer's market locations, as well as the menu to check out. One thing I never got to try was the micheladas they had at the storefront, now I can't! Apparently the building was bought to erect some high rise condos. Greedy property owners/ developers at work again. It was such a convenient, cool spot next to Luigi's Pizzeria in this southernmost beach town. Keep your head up Doggos Gus, I see a bright future for you.
google avatar

Robert H.

Yelp
After grabbing some beers at the Abbey, we grabbed some dogs and dug in. The food comes up pretty quickly and it is customizable to just how you want it. We got the jumbos and you would be surprised that one is just not enough. We tried a few options that night and they are just fantastic. Try each one and you will not be disappointed.
google avatar

M. H.

Yelp
Hot dogs, carne asada nachos, hamburgers, churro with ice cream are all delicious. Definitely a place to visit when going g to see the padres games.
google avatar

Angela B.

Yelp
I like trying things off their menu when we come her for the church abbey brewing. They have a touch less process with QR codes to order the food and it comes out so quickly. Yummy choices for their bacon dogs
google avatar

Marco G.

Yelp
Parking was really rough in east village at 8pm, not sure if there was a padre's game that evening or what but we didn't want to park in the sketchy side of east village so it took about 30min to find parking a block away. Food ordering was very easy and simple through their little iPad, and came out rather quickly for how much we ordered. Price was a bit on the high side, but the place had a cute ambiance and strong lights that made it feel cozy. Food-wise, we felt it could be better. The dogs were stuffed with toppings but the bottom of our buns were all soggy and made it rather disappointing/a mess. Overall a cute place, but probably not one I'd return to unless I lived in the area due to the challenge just to get the food
google avatar

Liz K.

Yelp
Ok let me preface with: I will be back...however....I ordered the Baja Dog and it barely had anything on it. In fact, the cup of elote weighed more than my dog and that was even 1/2 way full because it fell over in the car. Negative 1 star for no cover for the elote...it fell over and 1/2 spilled out on the floor. I was hella sad cuz it looked delicious. The Baja Dog was pretty good but lacked any crispy cheese or condiments. My order was "to go" so maybe the lack of toppings was the reason. I've seen posts of crispy cheese and more toppings on dogs and mi e had neither. I was disappointed but it did taste good. I will be back but will eat there.
google avatar

Stan S.

Yelp
This place had some good tasting hot dogs. The place is chill and close to the ballpark. Definitely would come back and try different dogs on the menu.
google avatar

Dave S.

Yelp
Was at an event today. Great vibe! Great location, and great food. Very imaginative menu. Some unique hot dogs. Ayy Wayyy is a chile verde topped hot dog. It was outstanding. The Surf and Turf is bacon wrapped with shrimp. The shrimp was cooked perfect and with the smoky bacon!! Multiple levels of flavor. But Chile Verde was my Fav! So unique and the verde sauce was tangy and fit very well w the hot dog. Must try to understand. I was so excited to eat my dogs I forgot pics. But next time I will add them

Yelp
I was super sad when I came back to San Diego and heard the old IB location had closed down so I am thrilled to have found their new location! We went right at opening time and all I have to say is it's absolutamente delicioso!! Like seriously, the dogs are grilled plus bacon wrapped and scrumptious and they offer Jumbo sizes for just a bit more. Everything was SO GOOD and all their cremas and toppings made the hot dogs even better! My favorite was the carne asada one it's just loaded with meat and yummy sauce. Such a cute little setting downtown with cornhole and picnic tables. They're quick and friendly I couldn't have asked for a better hot dog experience. Definitely a place to check out!
google avatar

Joanna M.

Yelp
OMG the food is so good- the best comfort food you can get in Sd. I had the chili cheese dog. It's located next to a small cute bar that's indoors in case it's too cold in the winter . The restaurant is out side in a cute patio so much fun in the summer. You can't go wrong with anything on the menu! Definitely have to try it
google avatar

Derrick S.

Yelp
Went here for a late lunch and it wasn't busy at all; maybe 4 people there at the time. They opened at 2pm (Friday). Easy to find this place but hard to find somewhere to park. There is a parking lot next door; however, prices were ridiculous since there was a baseball at Petco Park later. You can scan the QR code to order from the menu or use the machine at the first window. Took about seven minutes for my food to come out. I had the Surf and Turf hotdog and Fries. The food was seasoned to perfection and the fries came out crispy. The shrimp and sauce that was added made it take even better. They have all kind of items to choose from. Seating outside was great since it wasn't too hot or you can sit in the area next door that has umbrella coverage. Would definitely visit this place again.

Yelp
There is no parking lot here given it's in East Village so you either have to look for street parking (limited). I would recommend taking a ride share, trolley or walking here if you'd like to go. I took a star off due to the impersonal service.

Yelp
burgers? fire. hotdogs? fire. i live nearby so it's super convenient. service is always fast & ordering process is easy.
google avatar

Dan V.

Yelp
Fun place with unique hot dogs. Quick service and fair prices. I got the Carnitas Hot Dog and it was loaded with lots of good stuff. I wish the actual hot dog was a little bigger/fatter but it was tasty. They use a Texas Toast bun and it is very soft and delicious. Give it a try.

Yelp
I saw this place on social media and had to try it! It was so good and parking was actually pretty easy. I will definitely be back! The service was very friendly and the brewery next to it pairs nicely.
google avatar

Yelp
The place looked like it was next to a church. Got the California dog and doggos fries. They were very good. Very tasty. Was not able to finish the food. Would definitely be coming back to try the other dogs.

Renata H.

Yelp
One of my favorite places to eat in San Diego . ** Hidden Gem ** The outdoor patio is amazing for my toddler to run around while I enjoy my meal. The burgers are amazing, ay guey doggo is a must. We get the esquites and fries to share... great place to go before or after padres game ... service was easy and efficient order at kiosk got a text when my order was ready
google avatar

Scott W.

Yelp
Stopped by Lost Abbey for a beer and stumbled upon this gem. Online/kiosk ordering made picking what to order a breeze. Ended up with the chipotle bacon burger and fries, which was under $20 all in. Food was super fresh and received a ton of fries. Burger was cooked perfectly, thin but not dry. I can't wait to go back before a Padre's game for quick service and excellent food
google avatar

Janna C.

Yelp
I live directly across the street. I have eaten there twice and have not been very impressed with their hotdogs. Very small bacon wrapped dogs. I expected more from the reviews that I read.

Virjilio V.

Yelp
Extensive menu, and great food, A must try. Parking is limited since it's located in downtown.

Jasmyn L.

Yelp
If your looking for a hot dog stand, this is A place. I do recomend only getting the hotdogs though as it is the only good part we liked here (and the jumbo is not worth it). The cookies are rock hard, couldn't even eat them and the horchata is not at all what you would imagine it taste like. And when we actually got our food, the lady attending the register seemed like she didn't have time for us, being seemingly the only costumers here on a very dead Sunday. Mid.
google avatar

Yelp
This place was wonderful! The food was incredible, I loved the ambience of the area, and my friends and I all really enjoyed ourselves during the meal. Would definitely recommend this spot and will be back!

Yelp
When Doggos Gus closed their Imperial Beach location I was so sad but I have had it on my list to check out their newest location that is in combination with Lost Abbey. We epically failed at taking photos but we were just so excited to try everything we dug right in. We started with the nachos that come with fresh made tortilla chips and little bits of hot dog. We both decided on 2 different hot dogs even though the burgers and everything else sounded good as well, guess we will have to be back soon! We got the California dog and the carnitas dog. I do wish we would have done the jumbo dog but it was still sooo tasty se literally almost ordered another one. We sat outside with our dog since they are dog friendly and you can confidently order from a QR code at your table and the food came out super quickly. Literally everything on the menu sounded amazing. I'm writing this the next day and I'm already wanting to go back! See you soon Doggos Gus!

Yelp
The fries & hotdog were bomb! The elote I can do without. The corn was in like a tangy water once you mix the cup we didn't even finish it. My friend had the impossible burger and said it was good. They have an outdoor seating area felt like you were eating at a park. Service was friendly you order using you phone and they bring it out to you when it's ready.
