Dole Plantation definitely feels like a tourist trap. If you’re expecting an authentic or educational experience, you may be disappointed. It’s very crowded and commercial, clearly geared toward tourists. The tour, train ride, garden maze, and other attractions are all ticketed separately, or you can buy a bundled package. I’ve been to similar places that offer free tours, so this felt a bit excessive. Parking is free, which is a plus, but the lot was extremely crowded. There was a long line just to buy tickets, followed by an even longer line for the train, so we ended up skipping all of the ticketed attractions.
The Dole Whip is refreshing, especially on a hot day. The plain cone is reasonably priced and tastes exactly how you’d expect. However, the upgrades get expensive very quickly. We ordered the float in the souvenir cup with added toppings and it came out to $19, which didn’t feel worth it. Most of the toppings weren’t great—aside from the fresh pineapple. They charged $2.50 for popping mango boba, and there were maybe five pieces total.
Overall, it’s fine if you’re already passing through or just want to try the Dole Whip, but I wouldn’t go out of my way or plan a big part of the day around it. The gift shop has some unique items and candies, but prices add up fast. Exclusive pineapple-themed Hello Kitty keychain plushies were around $23–$28. As a Hello Kitty fan, I still passed.
