Dollar Stores Are Killing Independent Grocers | Eater

"A rapidly expanding discount chain that opens roughly three stores a day and increasingly targets rural and low-income neighborhoods, where it often becomes the primary nearby retailer. Its business model deliberately profits from cash-strapped shoppers—low-income households make up a disproportionately large share of its sales—and executives have publicly described those customers as core to growth. Stores primarily sell shelf-stable and packaged goods, and while a limited pilot of about 450 locations has added refrigerated sections, fresh and frozen offerings remain narrow (processed meats, some dairy, and frozen meals). Economists and local advocates say the chain undercuts independent grocers by capturing high-margin paper and dry goods, typically causing local grocery sales to drop roughly 30 percent after a new location opens; stores also employ fewer people per site than independent grocers and send profits and merchandising decisions to a distant corporate headquarters." - Claire Kelloway

Whoever runs to the store has no idea what they're doing. PEOPLE WITH FREQUENT SOMEPLACE THAT THEY CAN GET THEIR PET SUPPLIES. I HAVE TAKEN A PICTURE OF THE EMPTY SHELVES OF CAT FOOD EVERY WEEK FOR THE LAST MONTH. SO THAT'S 4 WEEKS OF ORDERING 4 WEEKS OF TRUCK AND NOBODY'S DONE ANYTHING. I'm not sure why I cannot put a picture on this review . But I'll go ahead and save it and send it to the corporate office. When I told the cashier about it she referred me to her manager who conveniently.... Wasn't fair??? Ok. I mean we all know that this is the bottom of the barrel as far as the Dollar generals in Tulsa go anyway..... But when your shelves are going completely empty... You're going to go bankrupt.. And after I'm finished with my corporate letter in the pictures? They'll close that one down ASAP. I don't tolerate rudeness and I don't tolerate lying to me ...by ANYBODY I never have and I never will suffer fools gladly. And there's a fool running the store and a fool for a cashier. THE STORE NEEDS TO BE CLOSED DOWN. The employees don't care the manager doesn't care CLOSE THIS LOCATION

This dollar general is the closest to our house, after yesterday evening we will no longer shop at this location anymore!!!! I don't know the cahier/ evening manger or what ever she is name, she drives the white bronco that parks in the handicap parking spot in front of the store. It's very obvious that she is racist. She is a very very rude lady, last night she couldn't get off her phone. She knew we were at the register waiting on her, she watched us walk to the register while she was off in an aisle texting. She finally showed up at the register when one another customer got behind us, still texting on her phone as she's ringing our items up. As she is counting our change to give back to us she stops and picks up her phone and continues to text well The line behind us grew very long. She did not care one bit, she finally gave us our change. She never spoke a word and never does ever and we go in there everyday. She is a very very rude person I don't see how she works in customer service we will no longer be going back to the store in the evening and I'm sure I'm not the only person that feels the same way

Been a long while since I visited this location. Compared to last time, this location was CLEAN, the clerk was so helpful and had a smile. Honestly I'm impressed. Kudos to the employees at this location. They have indeed turned the store around.

I felt like the manager was low key racist or something and I don’t ever try to accuse ppl of that. I came in for trash bags & he practically yelled at me for looking at stuff by the checkout while he was waiting to finish scanning my items. Store mad disorganized fr. Employees always on their phones. The Keisha girl was the only one who was nice fr. Helped me find my stuff and was patient. Keep her around. She a saint fr.

If I could give is this place of zero stars, I totally would. Not only were the two female employees that were working completely rude and hateful, but they literally could not answer or was just too lazy to actually help in any kind of way that I needed. For examples, I sent my 10-year-old daughter up to ask the two employees that were doing nothing but standing behind the front desk on their phones and listening to music so loud, that we had to yell over the music to be able to even ask a question, but when my daughter did ask. they simply rolled her eyes and ignored her. So I went up to ask the same question I sent my daughter up since they wouldn’t answer her and before I could even get my whole question out, so woman rudely looked at me and said nope they don’t have any which was not even what my question pertains to I was honestly just looking for a Christmas light clips. I was trying to see what aisle they would be on, but I ended up answering my question then when I go to check out. I was trying to ask them about one of my coupons and she just literally kept telling me I don’t know I don’t know. I don’t know anything about anything you’re asking me. I was literally just disgusted with these girls lack of manners, help, and respect. Not to mention, the store was completely cluttered and disgusting. You can barely been pushing a shopping cart through it without hitting things and knocking things over he was a day I will never go back there again, and I recommend that no one else do it either.

This location is very convenient. I just moved in the neighborhood as well. I do understand it's a pandemic, and also the workers are doing all they can and I truly truly appreciate what they do. I just hope that they would be able to get more workers in the store, so that people don't have to wait in line as long, with only one cashier. I truly hope that they get more workers so that things can get put up in the aisles. I grew up with dollar general, and I appreciate what the workers and management do. The one thing that I really really appreciate about the store it was very very clean and things were shelved and organized.

I try to call ahead to see if Alan or Kesharra is there so I don’t waste a trip. Ppl hardly answer anyway. I’ve also been told the phones don’t really work at all so there’s no point to call (male manager told me this). They are the only 2 I’d like to deal with. The rest of the employees need to find a different line of work. Customer service is definitely not their strong suit. Saw another post where someone said to record what’s going on in there & that’s such a good idea! Will definitely be recording next time.

Yelp
This place was so messy the last few times I have been there. There is stuff everywhere, including all over the floor. They do have cleaners and paper products for less than grocery stores. Many store brands are still as good as name brands. Good selection of canned food and snacks. Employees still nice.

Yelp
I was in store at 401 N Lewis on 4/27/2020 and upon leaving at 5:01 PM Octavius Berry was very rude. I thought he made a mistake and was giving me back too much and he let me know he knows how to do his job. I tried to explain why I was concerned and he told to hurry up and move because there was someone behind me. AS IF was unaware of this fact. If he doesn't feel well then he should have stayed at home.(trying to give him an excuse. Well if this isn't his name then that is strike 2 (I asked).
