New England Restaurant News, Updated Weekly (Winter 2020) | Eater Boston

"A seasonal waterfront restaurant in Harpswell with multi-level, many-windowed spaces offering sweeping water views; established in 1966 and revamped in 2011, it serves coastal Maine fare such as lobster stew and fish chowder and recently drew national attention when a high-profile visitor called its lobster roll the best she’d ever had." - Rachel Leah Blumenthal

Google
We had a wonderful time enjoying the food and ocean views. It was a gorgeous Monday evening and the restaurant and outdoor seating areas were full. But many folks came to hang outside, play cornhole, relax and enjoy the scenery, bring their dogs and enjoy some food and drink. Our waitress, Bridget, was fantastic, making several recommendations. The food was delicious, made even more so with the fresh blueberry muffins served with each entree. After dinner, we walked the property to stretch our legs and see the ocean views.

Google
Great spot for dinner and a view. The meals were great. The side muffins were delicious as expected. The only downside is the calamari. This is the worst calamari my family has ever ordered, and we order it as a go to app frequently. I can't even start to describe it as it is long fried strips.

Google
The most amazinggggg food and view! We powered through sitting outside for the experience and it was worth it. Our waitress was wonderful too! Even took some picture of us when we followed her to their secret sunset spot. We started with the Fish stew… holy cow it was great! My husband and I shared the Lobster and Scallop pasta and a lobster roll with fries!! 10/10 recommend sampling! Our friends order side salads and they were huge and looked good also they had the Haddock Sandwich and the Lobster and Scallop pasta. We definitely enjoyed this hidden gem!

Google
I had a fantastic experience at Dolphin Marina & Restaurant! The food was incredibly delicious, fresh seafood cooked perfectly and full of flavor. The lobster was especially good, and the strawberry and orange salad was absolutely delicious: light, refreshing, and beautifully presented. The blueberry muffins were a special treat: warm, soft, and bursting with flavor! The location is absolutely stunning, right on the water with beautiful views that create a peaceful, relaxing atmosphere. The staff were very friendly and attentive, making us feel welcome from the moment we arrived. The space was also very clean and well-kept, which added to the overall enjoyment. This is definitely a must-visit spot if you’re in the Harpswell area.

Google
My first visiting! I don't care for seafood but they had other food but limited. Beautiful view waiting was long due to the crowd on Sunday. Walk outside and there are fun games and large property with stunning views. Small marina. Parking wasn't good.

Google
Omg wonderful food. Pricey but well worth it. Very attentive waitress, and staff. We had crab cakes and bacon wrapped scallops for appetizers. Then Mac and cheese with lobster, lobster chowder, salmon linguini, and whole lobster. Fabulous 👌 and the Blueberry muffins served with the meal were so good. Great experience and beautiful views even though it was raining a bit. Highly recommend and would go again.

Google
We spent the night at the marina and had dinner at their restaurant. Everything was fantastic. The staff was very friendly and the food outstanding. We were also offered fresh coffee and blueberry muffins the following morning!

Nykol S.

Google
Beautiful views but disappointed by the food. My family hypes this place up all week long. I was very excited to eat here but the food was way to greasy and the clams were just OK.

Yelp
Truthfully the best blueberry muffin I've ever had! It came with the meal but I ordered a second one. The tuna was pretty good too! Appreciated the price point and the views were spectacular. The service was extremely quick and friendly as well. If I'm ever back in the area, I will 100% go again.

Yelp
I am teetering between a 4/5 but decided on a 5. We arrived around 6 on a weeknight in August. We waited around 20-30 minutes for a seat outside. The vibes are imma late, our waitress was extremely attentive and helpful with suggestions. Lobster Stew: 3/5 (just ok) Blueberry muffin: 6/5 (warm and would come back here just for this) Pesto Pasta: 3/5 Swordfish: 4/5 Views: 6/5... immaculate Cocktails 5/5 Would definitely return again just for the vibes and blueberry muffins honestly. To be fair with the food... the waitress gave us like five recommendations and I took none of them.

Yelp
Blueberry Muffins!! Service was excellent!!! Our waitress was awesome! Everything we ordered was delicious. The drive there was very nice but at times thought I was headed down a dead end road... the gift was the view from the end of the peninsula where the restaurant sits. Just perfect!! The view was worth the trip alone. Great for small to large groups. We visited in July, it was pretty busy during dinner but didn't see anyone really waiting longer than a few minutes to get a table. We were seated inside next to the panoramic windows. The outdoor patio and seating area was pretty big but was raining the day we visited so we couldn't enjoy it. The bar area also had plenty of seating and the same beautiful view.

Yelp
Once again a friend boated us in on a perfect October day with a few friends. The food, service, and views were excellent.

Yelp
A well established landmark based on the ocean, with access from dock to table, or vehicle to table. You choose. Food is always outstanding Service staff are repeat seasonal which makes this gem a well oiled machine. Ambiance-wide open spans to ocean. Perfect for family's with children. Pickup treasures from the beach, bring your camera for memory's, and come on an empty stomach. Oh, the blueberry muffins, best ever.
google avatar

Miles S.

Yelp
Absolutely stunning views. And I'm not the type of person to be using the word "stunning" like that, so you know it's legit! I'm talkin' bout you can see out over the entire ocean to the next islands, peninsulas (and all that environmental stuff). Options to eat outside on the grass and picnic tables are legendary. the inside lit though too! Freshest of the fresh seafood, local beers. Yeah, worth a trip fasho if you wanna get away and eat great! Great hospitality too!

Yelp
A shining gem located in the charming confines of Casco Bay. Is always a must visit when we are in the area. The space is perfect for small or large groups. With seating options indoors and out. What makes it even more spectacular are the options for arrival: car, boat or helicopter. Interestingly, it's not a rare sight to watch a helicopter or two landing. On the food front, the menu lays out a good number of choices seafood and non but the piece de resistance is the fish chowder. Imagine, a clam chowder, but with hearty chunks of haddock or cod. It is a ballet of buttery, creaminess that dances delightfully. The finale? It's served with a sweet, homemade blueberry muffin on the side. What about downsides? The prices are a bit steep. And not all dishes hold their own. The fried clams, for instance, an underwhelming portion. Dolphin Marina is well worth anchoring your boat at. Two words of advice as you chart your course to this restaurant: Come hungry. Prepare for irresistible chowder and beautiful views of the bay + islands.

Yelp
This was our fourth visit in three years time. Although it was overcast and cool, we had an amazing time. First, talk about coincidences, as we parked in the parking lot, my wife received a text from a former colleague who is now retired, telling us that he and his wife were at the Dolphin. It was three minutes ago. We entered and after making our reservation request, looked around and found our friends. We were seated on the deck as they were seated on the lawn. After greeting them and shocking them in the process, we sat down and enjoyed a delightful lunch/early dinner. My wife ordered the seafood risotto with shrimp, sea scallops and salmon in a delicious sauce and creamy risotto. I had the seared tuna which was in a word delicious! Morgan, our server was attentive without hovering, cordial without being saccharine. Simply put it was a great meal with the benefit of a "million dollar view."

Jennifer M.

Yelp
We had dinner at Dolphin Marina & Restaurant on Sunday night. What a wonderful experience! I had the scallop and lobster pasta in cream sauce and my husband had the seafood risotto. Sooo good! We also loved the blueberry muffins and the pumpkin cheesecake. It was worth the drive/ one of our new favorites!

Yelp
Had a good meal. Swordfish special. Place was packed. Portions very full. Very crowded.
google avatar

Yelp
The quintessential Maine spot for authentic seafood and spectacular views from every table in the Dolphin Restaurant!! We love that the owner comes around to chat with patrons. A show stopper and price performer is the fish chowder and home made blueberry muffin!! Perfect lunch!

Yelp
Visiting friends who summer in Harpswell--this is their go-to place. There are gorgeous water views from the deck, but it was a bit breezy, so we opted for indoors. Our waitress was spectacular, and I regret not getting her name. (I'll check on receipt later and update). We enjoyed an old fashioned and watermelon mint spritzes. Entrees included the parm crusted haddock, Lobster & Scallops, and grilled salmon. What impressed me was the kitchen's willingness to swap out the blackened swordfish with salmon because I preferred the sides but don't care for swordfish. Everything was delicious. Fun fact: the Dolphin's bread service is actually a scrumptious blueberry muffin with pat of butter. We were so stuffed, we couldn't consider dessert!
google avatar

Yelp
We've always had a great meal until a couple weeks ago. They are famous for their haddock chowder and blueberry muffins among other things. It was very noticeable that the chowder had less fish than usual and it was just luke warm. This past week my husband had fish and chips and I had a haddock sandwich. We both were very disappointed...fish was very thin and overcooked. $22 for fish and chips $20 for sandwich served with a handful of chips. Charge a little more if need be but don't nickle and dime your customers.

Yelp
Harpswell is an adorable little town, with the perfect marina to go with it. It was a beautiful day, so we sat in the back patio. It was covered but very open feeling. We all opted for either haddock sandwiches or lobster rolls. The haddock was perfectly fried and lightly battered. The lobster rolls were filled with chunky tender lobster. The house fries tasted great. My aunt was pleased to get a blueberry muffin--says they are to die for, but I was too full to be jealous. As an extra bonus, we got to watch the interesting process of cleaning the docks at the marina. A truck would drag a section of the wharf up to the waters edge, and men with shovels would whack away all of the shells and debris stuck to the docks. It was quite entertaining for a bit.
google avatar

Polly M.

Yelp
Everything's great at the Dolphin. The colorful boats in the marina, sunsets over the ocean, vernacular Maine architecture. Upscale but casual ambiance. Wide variety of seafood on the menu. Some vegan and vegetarian options too. Prompt and polite service. Linger over your meal and soak up the ambiance.

Bill H.

Yelp
The views are spectacular, the service is friendly, the food is very good and the prices are reasonable. The haddock was fresh and cooked perfectly and the bacon-wrapped scallops were superb. We stayed for dessert and finished with blueberry pie, which did not disappoint!
google avatar

C Y.

Yelp
Yay for diners with peanut and tree nut food allergies! They say that their kitchen can accommodate diners who need to avoid potential cross-contamination by nuts! Plus, those blueberry muffins are nut safe!
google avatar

James S.

Yelp
A local told us about the place and I'm glad she did. It was totally worth the drive. We sat inside as it was drizzling outside but with all the windows had a great view. Our waitress was fast, friendly and informative. Our food was really good as well. I highly recommend the blueberry (vodka) lemonade but be careful, it goes down easy. The next time I'm in the area, I'll definitely come back.
google avatar

Joe G.

Yelp
Does this look like a mom and pop shop? No. Is it one, though? Yes. In between the delicious lobster pasta and delightful fruit-de-mare sides, the owners will regularly drop by, chat, make sure you're enjoying your time. The muffins are a really nice treat. Excited to return.

Yelp
Another amazing meal in such a picturesque place ! We were lucky to get an outside seat , Such a beautiful day ! We started out with lemonade & bacon wrapped scallops with maple glaze ! Very good ! This is the only place I've had them that does not include a maple aioli dipping sauce . We both chose the Lobster and Scallop pasta ! What a beautiful plate of food ! The sauce was perfect ! Could have used more pasta and sauce . The entree came with a fresh blueberry muffin with butter . We Never have room for dessert but we did today ! We will be back again . Our server Peter was attentive and friendly . Please update your online menu and prices .

Beth B.

Yelp
Excellent food, atmosphere and service. The best blueberry muffins ever. Sitting outside is breathtaking views of the area.

Yelp
Wow. Delicious. Views are amazing. Staff are terrific. Ben was our server and he was great!

Yelp
Food was excellent. Service exceptional, ambience to die for!!! First time eating at the bar. Casually intimate.

Yelp
Food is good, service is very good, but the true greatness is the location. The view is beautiful and we went for a lovely walk after lunch. (I had a lobster melt that was just okay. It needed salt and a lot less mayo. My green salad was uninteresting.)

Yelp
Absolutely amazing food and service to go with the awesome view! I got to check this place out during our trip to Maine this past summer. We started off with complimentary homemade blueberry muffins, absolutely amazing! So fresh, warm, soft, and delicious blueberries. It was so good, we bought some togo for breakfast in the morning. For appetizer we got the Tuna Crudo, fresh tuna, love the avocado cream, and crispy fried wontons, light and delicious. We also ordered the Whole Chicken Wings, WOW WOW WOW! These wings were perfectly seasoned with their Jamaican Jerk Spice, then you get that unique Maine Blueberry BBQ on the side. flavors galore! An absolute must try appetizer here. We loved it so much we ordered a second plate of it. For entree we got the Lobster & Scallops, truly very good amount of protein in here, light pasta dish. I will say, the noodles could have been cooked a tad bit longer, only because it was too al dente. Other than that good pasta, but can't say it wowed me in anyway. We also got the Seafood Risotto, very good, lots of protein, all cooked perfectly. Like the pasta, I can't say it was out of this world. Decent, just not something I'd order again. Overall, the restaurant has awesome service, they were busy but the server made sure we had everything we need and was very friendly. The view, awesome blueberry muffins, and amazing appetizer is why I'll be back, but will definitely try different entrées next time.

Yelp
Visited with a party of 9 4 adults and 5 kids (age 8-15). Everyone was absolutely happy with meal and service. We had lots of lobster and seafood. The top items were lobster, lobster Mac n cheese, seared tuna, ceasar salad and golden slipper! Oh and who could forget the famous blueberry muffins. The staff was super friendly and accommodating. The kids enjoyed the tide pools after the meal. This is a must visit if you are in the area!

Yelp
If you are staying in Harpswell, this is a great dinner option without having to drive too far. All of the food was well prepared and consistent. We came here twice since we got into town a little late on the first day. The swordfish was probably my favorite dish. Risotto was very good. Perfect views of the sound and harbor. Great service. Recommend.

Yelp
My husband and I are locals but just haven't made it to the Dolphin Marina in years. Because my son was visiting from out of state, we wanted to dine at a seafood restaurant that offered a Maine experience. Located next to a boat dock, you can choose to dine inside with beautiful ocean views or outside where your dog can sit with you. We ate at a window seat and were greeted by our server Erica. We selected our dinner choices and the house special blueberry muffins were soon brought to the table. My son chose seared tuna, husband fried scallops and I chose fried clams that Erica assured were "select" and small, after I asked her what size they were. I never was able to like larger fried clams. My son raved about his tuna dish, my husband said the scallops were among the best he's ever eaten and my clams WERE the best I've ever had. Small, sweet and crispy, there was just the right portion and absolutely delicious. Erica was a flawless server and made our dining experience all the better. This hidden gem is worth the trip. By boat or car it's a truly wonderful place to eat.

Yelp
I shared a delicious lunch yesterday with my wife and food friends. The weather was sunny and warm so the outside seating offered a wonderful ambiance overlooking Casco Bay. The drinks were mixed perfectly and the bruschetta appetizer made a good starter to share. For my entree I enjoyed sesame crusted seared tuna over fresh pasta with Asian seasoning. My wife's salmon was perfectly seasoned, but the accompanying sides were bland. My friend enjoyed his haddock, but again his side vegetables were flavorless and left behind on his plate. My other friend enjoyed an amazing lobster and scallop dish with pasta in a creamy sauce. It looked and tasted amazing!! Throughout our visit we were well taken care of. I would highly recommend visiting the Dolphin Restaurant, but unfortunately have to downgrade it by a star for the two unflavored side dishes.

Robin C.

Yelp
Wonderful food in a spectacular setting! Wish it wasn't so far away. Almost worth making another trip to Maine!
google avatar

Yelp
Stopped here for dinner after an evening on the coast. The blue berry muffin and lobster roll were good!

Linda D.

Yelp
Very delicious steamed lobster, fried scallops and onion rings. Wonderful waitresses and staff. Highly recommend it.

Yelp
What a treat! Came by on a Saturday at prime time, peak season, with an expected wait of 1.5 hours. The wait fizzled quickly and were sat in less than 45 minutes (for a party of 2 plus stroller in tow, nonetheless). First and foremost, the waitstaff knows hospitality, everyone was unbelievably friendly and accommodating. When it comes to the food, literally everything hit the mark. We got the bacon wrapped scallops, lobster stew, a caesar salad, and the lobster/scallop pasta (blueberry muffins included!). We topped it off with the blueberry and key lime pies. Every dish was better than the next, zero complaints whatsoever - the pasta was absolutely fantastic. We're in the area just a few days and were planning to do dinner here once, but given how good tonight was, we're going to have to return. Highly recommend if you're anywhere near the area!

Michael T.

Yelp
Just order seafood, though the haddock sandwich and scallops were just mediocre, per 3 at our table. Four liked their lobsters. Leather is easier to cut than their $44 strip steak was. Mashed potatos were barely luke warm. Gravy over the steak was bitter. But why put gravy on a steak? Crust of the blueberry pie was pitiful and broken up. The filling for the pie wasn't even up to Lucky Leaf canned filling's standards, though advertised as wild Maine blueberry. Good ambiance. Good service. Plentiful parking.

Yelp
My friends and I have made it a tradition to go to Dolphin Marina whenever we are in this part of Maine, and our party of 5 decided to go for dinner on the Sunday of Labor Day weekend. We arrived around 6:45 to find a lot of people standing near the entrance, fearing that we'd have to wait an eternity to get a table. The initial estimate was 50 minutes so we thought we would use that time to grab a drink and explore the grounds. The restaurant is situated on a peninsula and the views are spectacular- you rarely come across a restaurant with scenes like that. It took us around 15-20 minutes to get drinks as there was a line for the bar for people waiting for their tables and we took our beverages to area behind the restaurant which had uninterrupted views of the water. But as we were heading out there, we heard one of the employees calling our table name and we headed into the restaurant before being able to fully explore. We were greeted by our waitress and she informed us about their specials while we looked over the menu. We decided to share the tuna crudo, bacon wrapped scallops and mussels for appetizers. As our appetizers arrived, a scallop hit the server's arm and rolled onto the table. I looked at the fallen scallop and was expecting him to say something about it but he tried to play it off like it was no big deal. But there only 6 or so scallops per order so losing one did make a difference so he offered to bring us a new scallop in a cold tone. Afterwards, we started to dig into our food but noticed that we had no silverware or napkins and we had to flag down our waitress to get that. I understand that it's one of their busiest weekends of the year so these type of things happen. But the appetizers were all delicious and the mussels was the standout, especially the broth that came with it. Our entrees came out a few minutes later and my meal came with a blueberry muffin and butter, which I had forgotten about. My tuna was prepared almost perfectly but it could've use a dash of salt as the crust was on the blander side. But the noodles underneath were delicious and made up for the tuna's lack of umami. I tried my friend's risotto and that was cooked very well and I would definitely order that as well. The muffins have historical significance as they used to give muffins to local fisherman and it is one of the best muffins I've had. The food at Dolphin Marina rarely disappoints, but the service on this day had a few minor issues. But I would not hesitate to come back in the future, especially with the breathtaking scenery.

Yelp
Top notch food. They were able to accommodate a party for 19 people with no reservations. The service was quick and the food was so fresh and amazing. The swordfish was the best I've ever had. I highly recommend it here and will be returning.

Yelp
October 2024 - We were here with 4 adults and a 2 year old. The service was great (fast) and the food was excellent. Beautiful location on the water.

Judy L. M.

Yelp
No downside. Beautiful scenery. Excellent food. Casual attire is fine as well. Service was great, too.

Mrs S.

Yelp
My daughter went to the bar to order a drink while we waited. She gave the bartender her id. The bartender got the manager. The manager said her id was fake. It is identical to my license. Our licenses expire when you are 65. My daughter showed her a picture of her passport since she was recent in Europe. My daughter also had a photo of her birth certificate that she had, again for traveling in Europe. The manager said, "I have made my decision." I spoke with the manager and my father, whom we were visiting, also spoke with her. This is simply unbelievable that a person with three forms of id can be denied a drink. I will never go here again. Such stupidity on the management. Shame on them.

Yelp
Great water venue with marine access. Food is great, not just fried offerings you often find in fish restaurants
google avatar

Tonya C.

Yelp
Excellent food and service. Had the lobster roll delicious. The lobster stew was excellent. The blueberry muffins are the best I ever had.

Alice S.

Yelp
Had whole lobster and lobster/scallop linguine. Fries were delicious. Everything was well prepared. Service is friendly and quick. Good draft beer options.

Yelp
Wow, what a beautiful seafood restaurant! The service is great, the food was delicious and the ambiance was incredible. It's a restaurant at a beautiful marina in Harpswell ME. Must stop if you stay in the area.
google avatar

Yelp
Visiting from Michigan and our Air BnB host recommended this spot. This place is a must go, especially on a nice day! I got the blackened haddock and my wife got a lobster roll. The blackened haddock was out of this world. The lobster roll was good as well but nothing super special. We got the blueberry pie for desert and that literally made the dinner. It was incredible. Once we finished dinner we walked around the property and took pictures next to the water and watched the sunset. Definitely an unforgettable dinner date on our trip to Maine!
google avatar

Sana A.

Yelp
So good! We came here with friends... the Parmesan- crusted haddock was exceptional. The blueberries were so so so good. The view is absolutely breathtaking in the summer. Service was excellent too!

Yelp
Winding down through Harpswell is worth the journey when you end up at Dolphin Restaurant! Plenty of parking on front of the lovely, friendly Dolphin, with its 180 degree of the harbor. Plenty of seating options..lawn , terrace or interior--all with views of the harbor.. Very attentive pleasant service and excellent seafood specialties, among them a distinctive appetizer, not the usual battered, deep fried variety, but generous and perfectly seasoned strips of calamari steak. The swordfish tacos were outstanding as was the generous crispy shrimp salad.. and the house Bloody Mary is excellent, though there is a variety of craft cocktails to choose from. We'll be back!
google avatar

Sue L.

Yelp
This was the perfect place for our 41st Anniversary! The Chowder was one of the best we have had. A lot of fish, well seasoned and very creamy! The muffin was delicious to go with it. My husband enjoyed the Seafood Risotto very much and the Parmesan Crusted Haddock with the Italian herbed sauce with the broccolini was a dish I would order again! The only "fly in the ointment" was the herbed rice. By itself it was delicious and paired with poultry it would be great, but it was heavy on the sage and did not go with everything else on the plate. We had Chocolate Raspberry Mousse to go and it was excellent! Our waiter was very nice and attentive! A memorable evening to top off our special day!
google avatar

Grace V.

Yelp
I was not sure what to expect when I came because it was busy and there was a line to wait. But the wait was indeed worth it! My family and I sat outside. The view was spectacular! You could see the ocean and boats passing by. The food was delicious as well. My favorite part of the night was how the appetizer was a blueberry muffin! What? Yes, you read this right! So epic! I had the grilled salmon and that was very tasty. I will definitely be coming back the next time I'm in Maine!

Yelp
We had clear weather which makes this place even better. Lobster dinner was very good, fried scallops were good, fried oysters were superb with a light batter, seafood chowder was luke warm we should have returned but they were so busy it would have just been microwaved. That was the only disappointment of a great meal. Everyone gets a fresh blueberry muffin which are great.
