The Best Willamette Valley Wine Tastings and Wineries | Eater Portland

"While there are a number of barns-turned-tasting-rooms in the valley, few others can say they house tastings in a hayloft. The vaulted ceiling and soft yellow lighting give the 100-year-old loft a cozy hideaway feel, or for sunny days, grab a rocking chair on the farmhouse’s porch. Dominio IV has two estate vineyards — one in Yamhill-Carlton and one in the Columbia River Gorge in Mosier, Oregon — allowing guests to compare two different Oregon winegrowing regions without the extra travel. This winery, founded in 2002, makes a wide range of not only pinot noir, but bold tempranillo and plush syrah, as well as minerally viognier. The tasting room is open daily from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m." - Katherine Chew Hamilton

Can’t say enough great things about Dominio IV Wines! From the stunning farmhouse to the restored barn, you will find breathtaking scenery and views anywhere you go on the property. The wine was absolutely fabulous, there wasn’t anything our group didn’t enjoy (hence I became a member). We thoroughly loved the hospitality and education we experienced during our tasting. They were friendly, knowledgeable about the varietals and how the wine is made, and poured some fabulous wines. You won’t regret coming here!

We were fortunate to receive a comprehensive tour of Dominio IV Wines, including the barrel room, where head winemaker Ryan shared insights into their process. Dominio IV focuses on terroir-expressive wines and unique small lots, aiming to showcase the distinct characteristics of their vineyards. Next, we moved down to the beautifully restored barn, My imagination immediately took flight, picturing summer evenings filled with fine wine, great music, and friends all around. In the tasting room, we were warmly welcomed by the lovely team and made ourselves comfortable upstairs, where the education continued with a wonderful tasting experience. Afterward, we took a stroll up to the “labyrinth,” a magical area of the vineyard featuring an acre-sized vine labyrinth. We couldn’t resist leaving with a few bottles, and by the end of our trip, we found ourselves drawn back to sign up for their membership. We even had the pleasure of meeting one of the owners and visionaries, Patrick, an absolute honor. We can’t wait to return and soak in more of this remarkable place.

What a place! Super cozy vibes. Check in at the farm house and get your welcome wine, then wander throughout the property. They will find you to pour the rest of the flight! So many lovely areas to sit, it was hard to choose! The barn was a gorgeous space, and would be perfect for an event. The wine was superb! So many different varietals. And all of them had so much finesse and were super well balanced. The artistry behind everything was spectacular - the wine labels and the stories behind each wine was a treat to learn about. Thank you for a lovely experience, Katie!

I visited the Dominio IV tasting room last week with my family visiting from Minnesota (ya sure, you betcha) and we had a wonderful time. My sister, her husband, my mom and my aunt all commented on how wonderful Patrick Reuter the winemaker was. He took time to discuss where they grew each varietal and how they dealt with the wild fire years... He was very pleasant. He even recommended we go up to the vineyard and pick cherries! They were wonderful. I cannot recommend Dominio IV tasting room enough. If you get a chance to talk with Patrick or the tasting room manager Katie, do it. Wonderful people. Don't miss this gem.

Google
Quick review - great wine and service, very relaxed vibe. We stumbled across this winery years ago when my father-in-law and his wife were in town, and when we want to do wine-tasting, we almost always include Dominio IV as a stop. Both my wife and I, and my father in law are members here. We like Dominio IV because it has a very relaxed vibe, with great service and better yet great wine. My experience with wine tasting in general is that I like it when I am at the vineyard, but when I get home and open a bottle later, it's not great. Not so here! We have had many bottles at home and they are just as great as the experiences we had at the winery. They are kid-friendly and let you bring your own food if you want to have a picnic. They have a nice barn that would make a nice event space and just added a bocce ball court. The wine club is pretty reasonable too (4 shipments/year of around $140) and pick-up parties include interesting events or food. This is just a nice place to spend some time with very good wine. Highly recommend!

Imagine strolling in, saying you have a reservation under your name, and then one of the team members going “oh my gosh, you’re Darcy!” And running to grab a bottle of champagne (that our friend had coordinated in advance). It started our visit here on such a fun note, and that level of excitement and charm sustained our entire visit. This is a special place. The home is set up so everyone does their wine tasting very privately. The team members are so thoughtful and enthusiastic in how they present the wine, and the wine itself is amazing. I love the imagination series!! We will always come back here and recommend!

Google
Happiest place on earth! Stepping into this winery feels like entering a serene paradise. The space is absolutely beautiful, with so many charming spots to discover and cozy nooks to relax in. Whether you're looking for a quiet corner to enjoy a glass of wine or a scenic spot for a photo, there's a perfect place for everyone. One of the highlights is how dog-friendly the winery is. It's wonderful to see furry friends lounging and enjoying the outdoor areas, making it a welcoming place for pet owners. This inclusive atmosphere truly adds to the overall happiness of the environment. The staff here are exceptionally friendly and make you feel right at home. Their warm hospitality and knowledge about the wines enhance the entire experience. Speaking of the wine, it's simply delightful. Each sip is a testament to the quality and care that goes into every bottle. Even the bottle art is incredible. In summary, this winery is the happiest place on earth for wine lovers. Its stunning scenery, friendly staff, and excellent wines make it a must-visit destination. Don't miss out on this hidden gem!

Google
Dominio IV is so wonderful! We've enjoyed summer, fall, and winter days in the barn, seen incredible summer concerts, as well as celebrated birthdays and tastings with friends. The vibe is friendly and laidback, and the setting is unlike any other in wine country with a gorgeous and uniquely restored barn full of unique spaces, a warm, welcoming staff, and great wine all around. Our kids love it as well. Katie has been especially friendly and helpful as we learn more about Dominio and all the neat things they are doing with their wine and beyond. Strongly recommend checking it out before it gets too popular!!

Yelp
A completely delightful, beautiful and best of all, approachable in every way: - beautiful and unpretentious location with many really fun and comfortable spaces to hang out. - remarkable wines that have enough happening but not overly complex. - great staff that is informed and accommodating. I couldn't be happier to have discovered this and am excited to make a go-to next time we're in the area.

Yelp
Dominio IV winery has beautiful grounds. It's a smaller winery in comparison to some of the other big name brands in the area. They offer personal service while tasting their wines - much more down-to-earth, unlike some of the shiny, upscale wineries. The owner is impressive - multi-talented and apparently did the art work for the bottle labels and more.

Joseph H.

Yelp
We have toured and experienced several wineries throughout the Willamette Valley and this one has always stood out to us. Dominio IV is an amazing venue, with amazing service, and, of course, absolutely fantastic and unique wines. We signed up for the wine club and have ZERO regrets doing so. Their releases are timely and amazing. Exploring their grounds always leaves us breathless with countless areas and different atmospheres to explore. We look forward to continuing experiencing Dominio IV.

Yelp
I hesitate writing this review because I only live 20 minutes away - I want these guys all to myself haha! This is by far the most underrated winery in Oregon. The Pinot is exceptional - better than wine priced twice as much. From the moment you encounter Katie or Liz, you know you are in for something exceptional. I have stopped by a few times. There are times when they are slammed and other times in the year when you have more freedom to shoot the bull. I'm not sure if it's the winemaker or the founders or the land, but this wine rivals Burgundy in all aspects. Take time to add Dominio IV To your tour. It's worth the extra time to find them and to sit for a few hours.

Yelp
My favorite spot to enjoy my tasting is on the porch at Dominio IV. Pure joy. Sitting outside underneath these giant beautiful trees last night was amazing!

Yelp
if I could move in and live here I would. the staff is lovely, the wine is delicious, and the ambiance is magical. My favorite winery in the valley!

Kaitlin C.

Yelp
We always have the best time visiting Dominio. Their wines are unique and delicious. It feels more home style and less commercial, in the best way. Dominio has the best staff, they go out of their way to make you feel at home. We will be members for many years to come!

Yelp
As a member of several wineries, it's not too often I venture off path and try different places. I went to Domino with friends for their Pick Up Party. WOW!!! On each corner there were signs with arrows pointing us right to the winery. Once in the building, I felt right at home. The wines were way way better than expected and the service was top-notch. It made me ask myself several times if I need just one more wine membership here. Each tasting flight displayed wines from eastern/central Oregon and Washington. Much different and welcoming styles compared to other urban wineries. I loved hearing the stories about the creation of each wine and the label. I went home with several bottles and will be back!

Yelp
The flight I tried wasn't my favorite but our group of 5 still ended up buying a case! Jose was AMAZING ! 5 stars for service. My friend & her grandma were sneezing because of allergies & he brought out a box of tissues without asking.. ambiance is a 3/5 good/small property, barn seating is a plus but if the place gets busy it's not longer intimate. Aka you're pretty close to other groups. Not necessarily a downside depends on what you're looking for. No view. Points for the orange tabby running around. Overall not a bad time but wouldn't bring someone out of town.

Yelp
Love this winery set in orchards and a magnificent old barn. After having passed this winery a few times and enjoyed their Technicolor Bat Tempranillo, we made our reservations. They have several seating areas indoors and out, along with lovely ground to walk and explore. Noah has been our guide every time we have gone and we are never disappointed. We became wine club members and took some friends this weekend as well... who raved about their offerings. They have an excellent selection of red and white (more than just Pinots!) and their hospitality is top notch. Highly recommend!

Yelp
With so many stellar wines/wineries in the WV it can be hard to stand out, but Dominio IV is a must! Not only do they make stellar wine, but they immerse tasters in a deeper sensory experience by turning taste into visual artistry- each label beautifully and creatively depicts a flavor-time continuum of  the first 60 seconds (if you can hold it in your mouth that long). I have never seen a winery or artist attempt such a clever feat! And the grounds are 3D artistry- with labyrinth vines and whimsical outbuildings and barn. Our som, Stephen, was incredibly  knowledgeable and charming. We've been all through Valley and our Dominio IV experience was the best!! 10 stars if I could :)

Yelp
This winery was at the top highlight of our Willamette trip! From the wines, to the staff, to the experience of the property, this trifecta could not have been better. Stephen and Jose were attentive and thoughtful throughout the tasting experience and we look forward to all the lovely wind that will be coming back to us in Napa!

Jan H.

Yelp
We had an absolutely enjoyable afternoon for two reasons - the wine and the server Camila. All the wines we were poured were great and represented the Willamette Valley as we know it. Our server was knowledgeable, warm and inviting - attentive to our needs. You will enjoy this tasting experience like no other - located in a farmhouse setting you could spend the afternoon In. Wonderful location to take photos - a must!! Thank you Camila for the awesome day!!

Yelp
Me and my wine crew came out last weekend to enjoy your most talked about tasting room and we were NOT disappointed. We felt very welcomed and would love to thank you for your hospitality and the tasting of your great wines. I joined your family of wine members that day and can't wait til my first shipment. All the best, ew

Yelp
Fun tasting room experience! Let me start off by stating I live in Sonoma county ( northern California wine county) so I've had my share of both great and unfortunate tasting experiences and this was a wonderful surprise. From the moment we walked in, we were made to feel welcomed and cared for. The tasting room staff were kind and took the time to explain the influences of the weather, appellation and wine making philosophy to help us understand the characteristics of each of the wines we sampled. This is of particular interest to us and I appreciated their time and emotional intelligence. Others came into the tasting room and the staff took the time to notice what would make each parties experience an enjoyable one. There was a couple who walked in, grabbed a pour and walked away to enjoy a seat in the cute sitting room adjacent to the main tasting area. The staff went with it and helped them feel as comfortable as we did. I appreciated that relaxed vibe. In the end, we made away with a few bottles to take home to California to share with friends. If you're in the Dundee area, this is a great addition to your trip.

Yelp
This wine tour is one that MUST be on your Oregon Wine tours experience. The wines are simply amazing. We did the orchard lunch / charcuterie board experience and it was hands down the most incredible wine tasting experience on the Oregon Coast. You must do this and you you MUST ask for Stephen Fouch for your tour.

Yelp
We love Dominio!! Such a hidden gem. They re did the barn since we had last visited, the social distancing measures they have put in place made us feel so safe. Noah was knowledgeable and friendly, felt like we could spend the whole day drinking wine and chatting with him. Such an intimate experience. Thank you Dominio and Noah for another awesome afternoon with amazing wine

Yelp
I love Dominio IV! My mom and dad (who actually aren't big wine drinkers) were visiting from Ohio and we took a little weekend trip to McMinnville. I came across Dominio IV and we decided to schedule a tasting. We found the staff to be incredibly kind and accommodating, especially our wine stewart, Heather. We loved the rustic chic red barn and felt so cozy and well cared for. My son and his friend (8-year-olds) appreciated playing games and picking apples and pears. We all loved the wine and actually decided to join their very affordable wine club. We came back a second time about 6 weeks later to pick up our wine club bottles and do another tasting with my in-laws and had just as wonderful of an experience as the first. I highly recommend a visit to Dominio IV for a low-key atmosphere and delicious, memorable wines.

Yelp
We stopped in at the recommendation of another winery. Glad we stopped in. They do a nice French style rose. It came home. They have a couple of good pinots. We particularly liked the Grenache and the Tempranillo. Good prices for the wine. Nice people; they let us use their patio for lunch; of course, we enjoyed a couple of bottles of their Pinot for lunch. We will make this a regular stop. Please stop in.

Yelp
What a lovely place! We lucked out and had Heather all to ourselves, for our tasting. The wine was wonderful, I joined their club. The packaging is unique and beautiful. Heather was a hoot and really catered the tasting to the different ladies in our group! We will return!

Yelp
Stopped by after s few other tastings, and Heather was a joy to get to know. Great presentation and wonderful wines.

Yelp
I went here with a friend for one of their tastings recently. I hadn't heard of them before, which was surprising because we usually head up around this area for wine tasting. I was told that they have some pretty good wine and even cuter names for them. This is a smaller winery, but they make up it with their personal approach and hilarious attitude. I like my Tempranillo and Grenache wines, but I stayed away from Syrahs after a not so cute incident a few years ago. But then I tried the 2007 Syrah and fell in love again. Sadly it was out of my price range, but I'm glad that I found my way back to it, haha. The staff here is super friendly and knowledgeable about their wine. They make a point to get to know you, so don't be surprised if they greet you by name the next visit. We got a couple of bottles to mark the occasion and it's become one of my new discoveries, so I'll sure to be back.

Yelp
What a great experience. Tastings are in a beautiful farmhouse with comfy front porch. We loved the wines - some very unique ones. We bought a viogner/Syrah which was awesome. Steve was super nice and knowledgeable.
google avatar

Julian M.

Yelp
Wonderful to just sit on the front porch and enjoy some good wine. Nice service. Didn't realize it but we stayed past closing time but we were not rushed off the property. Very kind people.

Yelp
I love this place, for so many reasons. It's one of my husband and I's favorite wineries in the Willamette Valley. They create beautiful wines from so many different varietals, including some of my favorite Oregon pinot noir. Their tempranillo and grenache are two favorites (especially that grenache - oh my). The Imagination Series is gorgeous (visually and in tasting). The setting is stunning (speaking specifically to the tasting room in Carlton, though the vineyard in Mosier looks equally inviting). This place has the perfect mix of cozy and exciting feel, with knowledgable and friendly staff who treat you like friends. Come here to experience some of the best wines (and experiences) that Oregon has to offer!
google avatar

Tim M.

Yelp
This is a very small winery that makes very good wine. I could leave it at that and just expect everybody to seek them out, but let me elucidate just a bit. First of all, I'm a huge fan of good Tempranillo, and they make an excellent one, grown near The Dalles at the "Three Sleeps" vineyard. So called because it is said when Lewis and Clark stopped here on their journey West they were told by the Indians that the Pacific Ocean was three sleeps away. They also grow Viognier and Syrah there. Winemaker Patrick Reuter does a fine job with all three and year in, year out produces marvelous wines. They all seem ready to drink and age worthy, a feat not often repeated by other wine makers. The Willamette Valley is home to their Pinot Noir vines and Patrick again does a consistently fine job with Pinot. They do make some red blends that sell for in the neighborhood of $15-$20 and are very good. As I said this is a very small winery, distribution is limited, I always buy mine at the tasting room. I have found it at New Seasons and some small wine shops.

Yelp
Dominio is a small winery located in the industrial district of McMinnville. Tucked in the back of a large parking lot, you see the towering tin building bearing the winery's name. As Brian T. mentioned, we tried to stop by a Friday evening but they weren't open. The owner said for us to come back the next day which we did. We had some complimentary tasting coupons we picked up at Panther Creek winery and the owner didn't even bat an eye when we gave it to him (three). He was talkative, personable (just got back from his 3rd grader's soccer game), and was generous with the pours. If I recall correctly, there were four wines included with the tasting, a white and three reds. I liked their Tempranillo and Viognier (can rarely pronouce that correctly but I can damn well spell it!) It was our last day in town and getting ready to drive back to Portland, and we were so glad we stopped back in. I really like supporting the smaller wineries and this place was well worth it.
google avatar

Sarah L.

Yelp
Worth getting lost for a bit to find it - if you call ahead to book a tasting they will take you back so you an stand amongst the barrels, which is great because I'm sure the tasting room fills up quickly. Our host was extremely knowledgeable, told us a good deal of history and answered many of our questions, both wine related and personal. He was hospitable even when our tasting went a bit after closing hours and retroactively comped 2 tastings due to us purchasing a good deal of the delicious wine (loved the Rose!).

Lorraine F.

Yelp
If you are looking for wonderful wine, knowledgeable staff, serene places to read...this is the place for you! See you at Dominio IV- I'll be the one reading on the front porch, with a glass of wine in my hand.
google avatar

Brian T.

Yelp
Overall this was the best winery we'd been to in town. WE tried to go on Friday, but they weren't open. We met the winemaker and he was nice enough to point us to a freshly tapped keg at the market in the same parking lot. I insisted on going back the next day, and boy am I glad we did. All of the wines were great, I purchased a great bottle of the 06 Tempranillo for around $26.00. The atmosphere was very accommodating, very personal. I just reallly liked this winery.
