The Primal Pleasure and Brutal History of Sugar | Eater
"A former sugar refinery that in 2014 housed Kara Walker’s monumental installation A Subtlety: a 35‑foot sphinx formed from roughly 40 tons of white sugar, posed as a crouching Black woman and surrounded by life‑size figurines of Black boys carrying bananas and baskets. Presented as an homage to the unpaid, overworked artisans who refined sugar, the work deliberately confronted the brutal history of slavery and exploitative labor behind the commodity, inverting the site’s whiteness by making Blackness central and precious while anchoring the piece in the factory’s visceral, molasses‑stinking legacy." - Ruby Tandoh
By the numbers: Brooklyn's new Domino Park - SilverKris
"Once a neighborhood icon that produced more sugar than anywhere else in the world, the former refinery sits at the heart of an 11-acre transformation and a much larger waterfront redevelopment. The megaproject—part of a US$3 billion development on the former 4.5-hectare factory site—will add four new mixed-use buildings and is slated to include around 700 units of affordable housing, marking a major revitalization of the industrial site acquired by developers Two Trees Management in 2012." - SilverKris
"A $3 billion, 11-acre master-planned waterfront project, Domino Sugar includes a public waterfront park and several buildings; Two Trees’ managing director David Lombino reported that Roberta’s is expected to sign a lease there. The development exemplifies the trend of master-planned neighborhoods (think Industry City and Hudson Yards) where developers lure residents by bringing in big-name culinary talent, and the project is slated to include new restaurants from notable chefs alongside Roberta’s." - Chris Crowley
I walked around the site years ago when it was being gutted. This past weekend I saw it complete from the East River in a kayak, and it looks impressive from that distance. I'm glad they decided to save this bit of industrial Brooklyn from the wrecking ball entirely (as has happened with so much else).

Quite an amzaing historical building. It was under construction when I was there but the waterfront area overlooking Domino Park still looked nice.
