Half Moon Bay Train Car Destination Restaurant Just Closed — For Now | Eater SF

"In the wake of Kis Cafe’s implosion, this nearby affiliated restaurant closed for good on August 2, ending a 17-year run as an upscale sushi restaurant; a window sign confirmed the news, and the San Francisco Chronicle noted Luke Sung is listed as operator on LinkedIn." - Dianne de Guzman

Google
The best sushi place we have been to! I’ve been to sushi places all over Ohio and even to a 5 star resort in Maldives, no place ever compares with domo. A must try is their hot love, it’s our go to!

Google
I will NEVER return to Domo again — which is extremely disappointing because we have frequented this establishment dozens of times over the last four years. What happened during our most recent visit was beyond unacceptable. My girlfriend ordered an espresso martini, and it tasted like some kind of chemical experiment gone horribly wrong. She politely sent it back and explained how awful it was. When the waitress went to tell the bartender — who we later found out was actually the manager — he screamed at her in front of at least ten customers at the bar and several other employees. He yelled so aggressively that she was in tears. It was shocking to watch a manager treat his own staff like that. We even told them we’d STILL pay for the drink. We weren’t upset with the waitress at all — I even told her directly that it wasn’t her fault and we just wanted something else that was actually drinkable. But after the manager’s outburst, she suddenly disappeared and completely ditched us. The situation could have still turned around and been a decent experience if she had just stayed attentive, but instead it went fully downhill from there. When the bill came, the disgusting drink was still on it. The manager insisted he could “doctor it up” with extra flavorings, which we refused because the original tasted like pure chemicals. We asked to speak to him, and despite standing right behind the bar, he made us wait 15 minutes before finally coming over — only to repeat that they “don’t take drinks off the bill.” Between the awful drink, the refusal to fix the situation, the waitress abandoning us, and especially the completely unhinged behavior of the manager screaming at his staff in front of customers, this experience was embarrassing and unacceptable. After four years of loyalty, we are done. We will not be back.

Google
Always a favorite, not necessarily the cheapest sushi in Toledo but likely the best, maybe excepting Kengo if you can get in there and find yourself downtown. Everything is fresh and tastes great, and I love the option of the single protein pick-your-own roll. Cocktail game is on point too, with a beautiful bar area.

I got a martini and the bento box. My husband got the sushimi dinner. SO delicious! I'm still full two hours later from the bento box and fully satisfied. The server was attentive, knowledgeable about the items given to us, and as a bonus he shook my martini and poured at the table. A bit pricey, but everything is nowadays and still worth it. Will be going again!

Google
This was our first time coming to this restaurant. Our waitress was very friendly and informative. We decided to try the peanut butter lime Brussel sprouts. Then far as the sushi we had The grench, Sweet crunch, Jalapeño bite, Philly and the famous California roll all were delicious. We did not have any left overs! People say it’s expensive, it is but it’s worth it. And usually if you buy cheap sushi it isn’t good sushi because it may often be made with low-grade fish or other affordable ingredients. Btw, they do have veggie options! 😇

Google
To be honest, it reached my expectation but still left something to be desired, such as the lack of diversity in every single plate. However, if anyone wants some American-style Japanese food, it could be the right place.

Google
Absolutely the best Sushi in Town!!! Great service! Absolutely would recommend to everyone, even if they have a favorite place for sushi, I would give this place a try! Very fresh! Always satisfied!

Carestin C.

Google
We all enjoyed our meal, the service was spectacular and we are very glad that we made a reservation because they were on an hour wait when we arrived. My husband and I ordered the Kiss of Geisha as recommended by our server and LOVED it. We also ordered the salmon collection off the regular menu which came with soup and salad so clearly our eyes were much bigger than our stomachs but it was all wonderful!

Yelp
Doma never disappoints! Fan faves are The Grinch and Otaku salad. We did not dine in.

Yelp
The food here is always so fresh and flavorful. Watching them make it in front of you is such a cool experience. The wait staff is always efficient and knowledgeable. The place is clean and the perfect spot for a nice lunch or a fancy dinner!

Yelp
Great customer service, our server offered his recommendations for both sushi and entrees. I ordered chicken teriyaki and it's more than enough for 2 people! The sauce is delicious and comes with rice and broccoli. I had the fried dumplings for appetizer, they had a nice crunch to them. It was a quiet Sunday night after Valentine's Day, so it felt cozy and peaceful for dinner.

Yelp
Since their reno, the space is so much more modern and seats way more people. Also appreciate that you can make reservations now. Staff is always friendly, too, with everyone helping bus and move things along. Sushi is why you're here and they make some of the best specialty rolls in town. Fav options are The Grinch and Crab Rangoon. But Grinch is my #1 and comes out on top every time. Love the paper wrapping and the eel. Their rolls aren't cheap so be prepared to spend $18 minimum. They also have a spicy tuna tower app that's really good. The only thing that knocks my review to a 4 are the drinks. The fountain drinks are, quite frankly, gross. I got a Diet Coke once and it was watered down and weird. Got a 7 up and it was sour. Got a grapefruit juice and wanted to gag. Tasted like mildew. And what's more, when I clearly am not drinking these things, I've never been asked why. I have mentioned they taste weird but never been offered to have that item comped which is odd since we're usually placing a big order. But if sushi is your game, Domo won't disappoint.

Yelp
Some of the highest quality sushi I have ever had anywhere in the world! This place is absolutely outstanding! Cozy up to the sushi bar with the excellent service you would expect from a Japanese restaurant!

Yelp
Not sure where to start with this review. We are visiting from California, and decided to stop in to try the food. When we walked in the atmosphere was very depressing and the lady at the door seemed like she hated her job. We still decided to grab a seat! She took us to our table and made sure to make a comment on how busy they were, having 4 tables in my opinion isn't too busy. We asked her a couple of questions and she seemed like she didn't want to answer or she was irritated. The table behind us were in to celebrate a birthday and wanted to order a cocktail and was told they couldn't order one because they have no one to make their drink. This place needs to work on their customer service because it's highly lacking. When I come go out for lunch/dinner I don't want to feel your negative energy and stress. Now to the food....sashimi was great but the rolls were not good at all. The soft shell crab wasn't edible. Interesting enough couple years ago I left a review on behalf of my mother for the service and the hair she found in her food. When I left the review it was taken down. Now I was able to come in and try Domo's and was very disappointed.

Rosie F.

Yelp
We have always loved Domo's food. Good but Pricey. I picked up a "to go order" last week and was very disappointed. The Ahi Tuna was tough/grizzly and had no flavor. Also ordered a Hot Love roll and it was very blah had no flavor. I called and talked to Manager and she said she would let chef know. Won't be going back anytime soon and pay those prices.

Yelp
Best sushi in Toledo by far! The service is always amazing and main dishes are all delicious
google avatar

Yelp
Second best spot for sushi. Unassuming place with decent service. Not like my fav spots in Toledo or Michigan. But quality food and good app choices. If it was closer I'd prob spend more time there.

Yelp
Sat at the bar and had a pretty good time. We ordered a bunch of stuff and drank some wine. We had a fun time.

Yelp
I ordered a few sushi rolls to go from Domo Sushi and was delighted with the experience. First, I was pleased with the number of vegetarian sushi rolls available- I went for the Buddha roll and the sweet potato tempura. Service was friendly and speedy. Both rolls were tasty and the rice texture (sticky moist warm ratios) were on point. The restrooms in this location are clean and very fun - the sink fixtures were retrofitted shower fixtures!

Yelp
Food was great! My new favorite sushi place, I really like their creative monthly sushi rolls, really amazing. Service is nice and relatively fast! Ambiance is great. Overall AMAZING place. P.S I recommend chocolate peach and strawberry mochi. Thanks for taking the time to read my review!!

Yuen Y.

Yelp
The food was amazing. The service was top notch. The sushi chef and wait staff are very friendly and attentive. And I love their ambiance. I would definitely go back. It's was a great experience.

Kristen P.

Yelp
This isn't my favorite sushi spot. I think the rolls are mediocre at best, are expensive, and yet the restaurant is always busy.

Yelp
Domo is solid. They don't disappoint. They're also one of the better ones out here. All in regards to the taste and freshness of their food. Levels of service on the other hand, can be worked on. But then again, in the current market, it'll be difficult for anyone to employee decent people anywhere you go. Having said that, it would at least be beneficial for owners to have their employees properly trained so when they answer the phones for take-out orders, hosts/hostesses have a basic understanding of what the restaurant does/doesn't offer. I've run into a few issues when ordering via phone. I understand most people probably use online ordering, where everything generally is spelled out. But sometimes you get stuck having to call into the restaurant and inevitably have to ask a few questions--driving for instance. It would be helpful for the hostess to know whether they offer "futomaki" or not. Back to food. Like I was saying, quality of their food is quite good. Sushi--yes, the actual rice part--is very good, which arguably separates the good Japanese restaurants from the bad along with freshness of fish. In that regard, Domo definitely deserves to be 4 or even 4.5 stars. They have been the go-to for my family for a few years now, and they have not disappointed us one time. For the time being, they'll continue to be for us.

Yelp
I enjoyed the sushi I ordered and my friend enjoyed their seared salmon. Seared Ahi Tuna

Dania A.

Yelp
Great food and atmosphere! A staple in Toledo! Their sushi and other menu items are always consistently good! Service is always a A+ too!
google avatar

Shantay M.

Yelp
I did a takeout order of the miso soup, shrek roll and crab cakes. Everything was good except for the miso soup. The soup wasn't the best but it was still warm when I made it home but was just okay. The staff was very friendly and informative. I will return to try the pink lady since everyone in the review liked it so much.

Lexi M.

Yelp
Our favorite Sushi place we have found in Toledo since we moved here. The prices are kinda of the high side, but the sushi is worth it! Their cocktails are really great as well!
google avatar

Jason H.

Yelp
We never got past the hostess....we entered and she was on what i co sider to be a very long phone call. We were never looked at...acknowledged ...anything. There was another lady who I believe was in the same boat as we were, getting ignored by the hostess. When the phone call was over....she never looked up...smiled or acknowledged us. At least she is thorougj and consistent. We left.

Yelp
Thanks to Yelp! I made my first visit to Domo Sushi as I happened to be in the area at dinner time. Pulled into the plaza where Domo was located and opted for sushi over bar food. The sushi rice was very unique in my opinion. It wasn't the usual very sticky, sometimes heavy sushi rice. It was light and fluffy tasting. It's not like a Cal Rose sushi rice, it was a medium grain white rice. Yes, the sushi was a bit more "feeble" than usual, but quite tasty. Wait staff was very attentive and the prices were in line with other higher end sushi establishments. I would stop at Domo again when in the area.
google avatar

Elizabeth L.

Yelp
The service here is always amazing, everyone who works here is always so incredibly friendly and helpful! I love that there are so many unique and creative vegetarian & vegan rolls on the menu. I highly recommend the breaded potato roll.

Yelp
Best sushi and Martinis in toledo. Always a good special roll. Can be finicky with hours. Always check before going

Lars J.

Yelp
Hit the spot. Got a couple rolls to share and I was a happy camper. I need to go back and have more

Yelp
Hands down my favorite sushi spot in Toledo! They have a great mix of specialty sushi and classic sushi to choose from. My favorite is Hot Love which is tuna, crabmeat and spicy sauce. I recently tried Kiss of Geisha, which is tuna, salmon and crab mix, and that may be a new favorite as well. Definitely don't be afraid to try new stuff here! Usually when I come here, I'm seated at the bar almost immediately. But the last time I was here on a Friday night, me and my friend had to wait over an hour before we were seated. We ended up dining at a booth. Our waitress was super pleasant and efficient. Would definitely recommend this spot to sushi lovers.

Yelp
Love this place one of the best sushi spots in Toledo they're sake is good service is great all around good spot for all sushi lovers

Yelp
As we were walking into Domo, I overheard some chap talking. Apparently, his larynx had never been exposed to testosterone. He said: "Domo is, like, Ok for Toledo? But I'm, like, from Los Angeles? So I, like, know real sushi? So...wah wah wah." If you hear someone talking that way, the proper response is: "Thanks for the input bish, now step aside." Then, saunter your pretty ass into Domo, and enjoy some good food. Ok, okay, OKAY! I admit, the sushi only ranks somewhere between 2 and 4...that's my wife's opinion, and that constitutes her primary criticism. My chief complaint is that the flavor of almost every item on the menu could/should be more bold. BUT, Domo has great apps (beef wrapped asparagus, Domo tower, agedashi tofu), great service (maybe too great...sometimes it seems to border on obsequious, depending upon the waiter). Also, the drink options are always fun. The atmosphere is modern, clean, and comfortable. Domo is pricy, but the prices are not necessarily out of line for a (mostly) Japanese place. All in all, Domo ranks 4 to 5 stars!

Yelp
Stephen is an excellent server. Chef John remembers what I like. He even remember I don't like scallion in tiny details. He's welcoming, warm and moderately I didn't like it when some chef talks so much and bothers me while I eat. I like John's style sushi. He's generous. He's always very creative on menu. Definitely recommend Otoro Tartare if you like bluefin belly tuna. Asparagus beef roll is a must order appetizer. Tonkatsu is their new appetizer that we enjoyed it very much. Bartender Melissa makes good drinks. I had 5 drinks and They are all good, mango, lemon drop, berry cosmo ... Lovely Thursday date night if you are looking a good space to dine. Come for the food, stay for the people.

Yelp
My husband said this is probably the best sushi he has ever had. That is saying alot because he isn't the biggest fan of sushi to begin with. I think the big difference for him was how fresh it tasted. I could eat sushi everyday and I will say it is definitely one of the better places I've been too but I think it was because of what and how we ordered our rolls. I am a big fan of the fresh taste of fish and I absolutely HATE when they cover it with all the different sauces...like- i didn't come here to eat fish with mayo on top...disgusting! Anyway, we ordered the Phoenix roll with the spicy mayo on the side and the Caterpillar roll with the eel sauce on top but also nixed the spicy mayo. The result was fresh perfection. We could use the spicy mayo as we pleased, although I barely used it because it was so good without it. We also got the escolar nigiri and it was super good! So, my point is, had I ordered the rolls directly from the menu I don't think I would have liked them. But taking away all the unessessary sauces that in my mind are only used to cover up fish that isn't fresh, is the way to go!

Je A.

Yelp
Don't go. Guest in town for Xmas weekend. We were sat in the back booth and ignored. Took forever to order had to ask for water and drinks. Food never came, we left after an hour and a half with no food. " The kitchen was backed up." FYI so were the toilets in the bathrooms. Disappointing and disgusting. Things have fallen a part spectacularly at this place.
google avatar

Whitney B.

Yelp
We love sushi and this was our first time trying Domo. We definitely ordered too much because it all looked good. They had some pretty interesting sushi rolls I hadn't need anywhere else. Everything was very clean including bathrooms. We got the bim bim bap, ahi tuna, crab Rangoon roll, sweet potato tempura roll and one more I sadly can't remember the name of. Everything was really good, the food was cooked well and made using quality ingredients.
google avatar

David W.

Yelp
God tier food. Definitely the best sushi in Toledo! The staff is great (shoutout to Brad the bartender) and the sushi crew works their butts off (and they have a some humor if you check the bottom of the container with the ingredients facing the customers). Would always recommend this place for a great meal!
google avatar

Yelp
I have lived in Hawaii and just moved from San Diego to Toledo, so didn't have high hopes for the sushi here, but Domo is some of the best sushi I've had, period. Thoroughly enjoyed the Pink Lady, the salmon skin special and the Dynamite Roll, along with bites of my husband's Viper Roll. The Grinch Roll was OK, but I'm not a big fan of cream cheese in rolls (my fault for not reading the description more closely). The seaweed salad was yummy, the service was great, and the prices were about what you expect to pay for some really good sushi. Glad it's close to our house so I can come here on the reg.

Yelp
Very average sushi place, even for Northwest Ohio. I was not very impressed with either the service or the quality of the sushi, which was disappointing after reading some of the excellent reviews. First off, I came in a group of 7 on a busy Saturday night, and we had to wait about half an hour at the bar to even be seated. Didn't mind too much as I understood that we had a large group and the hostess was trying to be accommodating. However, after we finally got seated and ordered, we had to wait about another 45min to an hour before getting our food, and at that point the restaurant was clearing out so it wasn't even that busy. The waitress serving us was very sweet and friendly (I would give her 5/5 if I could) and we were able to entertain ourselves, but that wait was still kind of ridiculous. On top of that, they told one of my friends after we had been waiting a long time that they ran out of the tamago she had ordered and asked her if she wanted to order something else instead, but at that point she was like, just forget it. So, after the long wait, I was looking forward to some fantastic sushi and was pretty disappointed. My sister and I split a negihamachi roll, a spicy salmon roll, and the Three Musketeers special roll (combo of tuna, salmon, yellowtail, and some veggies in a spicy sauce). They tasted decent but not particularly fresh or flavorful, and they were only 5-6 pieces per roll. Maybe some of the fancier rolls might have tasted better, but I thought they were pretty overpriced at ~$14-$20 a pop. Ironically, we all finished eating in like 10 minutes. My favorite part of the meal was actually the pear tree martini we had ordered when we were bored of waiting lol. Very delicious and refreshing! Overall, pretty average sushi place. I think you can find better sushi in Toledo at a more affordable price and much less wait time.

Edward R.

Yelp
by far best sushi in town! Great service and staff

John F.

Yelp
Hands down, the best sushi in Toledo. You have to try the hot love roll I've tried sushi in many major cities and Domo is still the best
google avatar

Aaron A.

Yelp
My favorite sushi in Toledo. The rolls are big, the presentation is beautiful, and the rice is always warm and just perfect. There are a lot of sushi places to choose from on Central Avenue, but if you haven't been to Domo yet you are doing yourself a disservice!

Pia D.

Yelp
Overpriced! We have been a regular customer since we moved to Toledo almost 10 years ago. But, for some odd reason, over the past 2 years or so their prices have soared sky high. The amount of increase in prices are way above what inflation, COVID or seafood/staff shortage could explain. I agree with other reviews that their prices are way higher than bigger cities such as Bay Area or Chitown would charge. Also, the quality has dropped where their fish to rice ratio in their rolls are worse and portions smaller. Expect to spend as much as one would spend in a Michelin starred restaurant for way mediocre quality food....what a joke.

Ariel B.

Yelp
The sushi is so fresh! Service is pretty average(good not bad). The environment is nice! Small restaurant, but nothing wrong with that!
google avatar

Trevor W.

Yelp
We went shortly after their 5pm opening and the place was already filling up. Awesome, informative, and positive server. Food came quick for being sushi. Crab cakes ruled. Got four different rolls and loved them. Would definitely recommend and will return.
google avatar

Peggie R.

Yelp
I met Wen Jae (sp?) on the shuttle bus during the Solheim Cup. I had already been to Kira and, although okay, I was not impressed. (I'm a Florida girl.) Found out later it is better known for their teppan tables. Fortunately, I had another opportunity for a dinner and went to Domo. Wen Jae remembered me and was most gracious. As a single diner, I chose to sit at the bar and was not disappointed in the service, friendliness, food or company of other patrons! I did not find their prices out of line with other good sushi bars. But I did find that their Bartender, Brad, was much superior to any other sushi bar that I have visited. Lots of fun, good food and, yes, I would definitely go there again.
google avatar

Andy D.

Yelp
Oh my! Fresh fish and excellent cocktails! Bartender was over the top!! In a great way!! Definitely knew his gin!
google avatar

Julia V.

Yelp
Domo, you guys are doing AWESOME in here! There are so many rolls to choose from that I took 15-20 min (shooing away my very attentive waiter several times) just to look over the menu. I ended up going with the Tempura Combo so I could try more at once. Wow was it great! I was not disappointed and everyone in the place is all smiles and great service from the host to the wait staff to the sushi chefs. I'm blown away by their service here, other surrounding businesses should take note! Keep up the great work guys. What else can I say but Domo (Arigato Mr. Roboto)!
google avatar

Wine T.

Yelp
When in the Toledo area, this is a must go to sushi place! Fish was fresh, menu was creative and the chefs do a great job at presenting the food. Service was friendly and attentive.
google avatar

Ayoub N.

Yelp
I love Domo Shushi! I've been here 5?times already within the month of November. What I recommend is the following: Black Dragon roll, Alaskan roll, Caterpillar, Dragonfly, Hot Love, Hot & Sexy, aBumble Bee
google avatar

Arohi B.

Yelp
We went on a Tuesday night and the place was filled! We waited for quite a bit for our food. The sushi was pretty good and the appetizers were great (the Brussel sprouts were yum). The sushi is a little expensive for the taste but overall we were satisfied.
google avatar

Marisa R.

Yelp
As always, Domo hits it out of the park. The size of the rolls are much larger than those at other restaurants. The service is great and the selection of rolls, entrees, and appetizers is robust. The viper roll was one of my favorites--it has a complex flavor with the addition of cilantro. It would be nice if they had a "Chef's Selection" with a set price for larger parties, but either way, the options on the menu are more than adequate. Out of all the sushi spots I've been in many cities, Domo is definitely the best.

Autumn K.

Yelp
This place insanely overpriced. The ambiance is average, loads of stacked chairs replacing the booths for many months, maybe even a year. It's as if their storage space is the left side of the dining room. The food is decent, but not enough to prompt a review, maybe a 3.5 star rating. The prices are bonkers. I have sticker shock each time I try Domo and I moved here from Los Angeles. Domo is more expensive than the most pretentious sushi place in LA and it's more expensive than the best sushi in Toledo (Kengo).
