Malta’s Hotels Are the Stuff of Dreams

"A beautifully restored 17th-century palazzo in a prime location at the head of Valletta’s main drag of Republic Street, Domus Zamittello is the opulent luxury hotel this famous Baroque city demands. The public spaces are imposingly elegant, all lovingly rebuilt to the original specifications, while the rooms balance the old-world grandeur with smart 21st-century comforts." - Mitchell Friedman

"Why we love it: A beautifully restored 17th-century palazzo offering luxurious rooms and attentive service The Highlights: - A gourmet breakfast spread served daily in the grand dining room - A third-floor terrace with a bird’s-eye view of the historic opera house next door - Weekly happy hour with the general manager, complete with canapés and drinks The Review: A five-year-long renovation turned this 17th-century palazzo into an elegant, 21-room hotel, located on the central Republic Street next to the former Royal Opera House. The hotel’s well-preserved architecture is especially apparent in the beautiful lobby and dining room, where a breakfast of eggs, cheese, meat, fruit, and freshly baked croissants is served each morning (guests often report smelling the delicious spread upon waking). Elsewhere in the hotel, jewel-toned furniture, plush carpets, gilded frames, and Venetian chandeliers accent historic details, lending the property a luxurious feel. Up on the third floor, a terrace offers ample seating and expansive city views. Guests can choose from four room types—including duplex suites with two bathrooms and separate sitting areas—each outfitted with embroidered linens, heated floors, marble bathrooms, and classic furniture in muted tones. Should they need help during their stay, they can also look forward to an extremely friendly staff, who will greet them with a handwritten welcome note and an invitation to a weekly happy hour with the hotel’s general manager."

We had an absolutely fantastic 4 night stay at DZ. From the moment we walked through the door we were delighted with our choice. The hotel is located right in the centre of Valletta within walking distance to some great restaurants and all of the historic sights. The staff that we met were so amazing from Maria who chatted to us at breakfast and the general manager Moul who was so welcoming and helpful with recommendations. The room was large and beautifully presented. The breakfast was plentiful and the porridge in particular was so tasty. There was a turndown service each evening. On the third floor there was a lovely terrace that we could sit and watch the activity below.|I would absolutely love to return in the future and will recommend this to my friends and family.

Just returned home from our 2nd stay at this fantastic hotel. The hotel is in the best location in Valletta. When we booked to go back to Malta there was no doubt where we would stay. We were greeted with a warm welcome from Maria & Mohit and were given a lovely welcome drink. The room was ready straight away and it was spotlessly clean - the housekeeping team did an amazing job cleaning the room and doing the turn down service every day. There were lovely Penhaligons toiletries supplied in the bathroom too. Breakfast was lovely as usual and they make the best porridge I’ve ever had! |We had a day of rain when we were there but the hotel had umbrellas we could use which was handy.|The manager Moul is such a lovely gentleman and goes above and beyond to make sure guests are looked after. The staff really do make this hotel - special thanks to Moul, Maria, Sandra, Mohit and Alvin. As well as all the restaurant staff. |We miss Malta already and we miss the wonderful staff are Domus Zamittello.|Until next time… we will be back!

We had a wonderful experience at this historic property. The location (can't be beat1), staff and lovely accommodations made this a perfect stay. Our room and bathroom were of a nice size and well appointed. The bed was very comfortable. The breakfast area was very nice and the made to order breakfast was good (though it could benefit from a few more choices as we stayed 5 nights). We were in the very heart of the main street of Valletta yet the room was well insulated against the sounds outside. We would highly recommend this unique hotel.

Fabulous hotel located right in the heart of Valletta within walking distance to all the major attractions and plenty of restaurants. The staff were so welcoming and couldn't do enough for us (a special mention to Mari who served breakfast). Although in a central location, the triple glazing meant the room was quiet and it was immaculately cleaned every day, and even the bed was re-made after an afternoon nap! Wonderful terrace where guests could sit out and soak up the atmosphere, the sun and a cocktail or two. The hotel has a car and driver and we appreciated it when it came time to think about getting to the airport to get home. Would definitely stay here again.

We had a wonderful stay at this hotel. The room was very comfortable, clean, and well-maintained, making it easy for us to relax. What truly stood out was the excellent customer service—every staff member we interacted with was friendly, attentive, and eager to help. Their professionalism and warm attitude made our entire experience even better. We would gladly stay here again and highly recommend it to anyone looking for comfort and great service.

We truly enjoyed our stay at this hotel, and Sandra at the front desk along with Oweu made it even more memorable. From the moment Oweu picked us up at the airport and brought us to the hotel in comfort, everything was exceptional. The hotel is centrally located, and the suites are tucked away from the street, ensuring a peaceful and quiet stay. The rooms were spotless and very comfortable. I highly recommend this hotel if you're looking for a great location, a boutique-style setting, and a warm, welcoming atmosphere.

Fantastic hotel in a great location to see Valletta.|Every member of staff was welcoming, the room was great and very clean.|Bed and pillows comfortable, and shower worked well. |All in all a fabulous hotel.||Only downside was the quality of the breakfast in the adjacent dining room, which we understand is under separate ownership. After 2 breakfasts we skipped the 3rd.|Cold eggs, over crispy bacon, dried up toast and stodgy pastries!|Coffee was good..........

We had a truly wonderful stay at this hotel during our honeymoon. Our room was cozy, perfectly equipped with everything we needed - including an iron, ironing board, and hair dryer - and cleaned twice a day, which made it feel fresh and welcoming at all times. Thanks to the air conditioning, we could relax comfortably even during the hottest days. Nothing was missing. Breakfasts were absolutely delicious, prepared with the quality and presentation you would expect from an à la carte restaurant. The hotel also offers a private, intimate gym, which was a nice touch. What really stood out, however, was the service. The staff and manager were incredibly warm and attentive, welcoming us beautifully for our honeymoon and always checking in to see if they could make our stay even better. They went above and beyond with thoughtful surprises, lending us towels whenever needed, and supporting us throughout our visit. In the evenings, we could sit on the terrace and enjoy the magical atmosphere, even watching a tribute to Pink Floyd — an unforgettable experience. We are deeply grateful for such a memorable stay filled with comfort, kindness, and wonderful moments. Highly recommended!
