National City Restaurants to Visit | Eater San Diego

"The taco might be the most famous Mexican corn vessel, but the marquee gordita — a nixtamal disk sliced and stuffed with stews — gets the spotlight all to herself at Gorditas Don Andres. Fillings range from modest beans and cheese all the way to dark moles and fatty chicharron with nopales." - Mario A. Cortez

Being that I love tacos, this was not my ideal place to eat. I had two steak tacos and one chicken taco. Both were extremely dry and the chicken was terrible. The tacos has no flavor! You can tell the job was rushed and it showed! To make matters worse, the staff was using their bare hands to prepare the food, which was unsettling. All in all, I was hoping to find a new place to eat but I will not be back. The cashier was super welcoming and polite which was the best part.

Google
The food was good and the service was friendly. We ordered a steak torta and a quesoburrito. You can park in the back and enter through the back entrance. Prices were not bad but seem to have gone up consistently over the past few years compared to previous photos of the menu. Good place overall though so give them a try!

Google

Google
I am so impressed by the authentic flavors this little hole in wall brings, definitely family owned and operated and they are all very sweet, but the food speaks volumes... try the quesabirrias and burritos 🌯 you won't regret it!

Google
This restaurant has changed names. No longer Don Andres #3. Food is MUCH better now. Still looks the same inside. Highly recommend for Mexican takeout. Steak fajita dinner can easily feed 2.

Google
Nice looking, clean restaurant. Service was very good. I went maybe a half hour before closing so my review is based on that. The food overall was excellent but my beans were very dry and I suspect it's because they've been there all day. Next time I'll go much earlier and I'll compare. I do recommend.

Google
On my way for the 10th time in a month and a half getting their birra tacos. Right now…. Literally driving as I leave this review. I AM ABSOLUTELY OBSESSED. Good horchata and tamale too. Staff is super polite. Will try to update the other photos Update, I did the birra burrito 100/10

Google
Food 3 Stars: There really was no flavor to the meat, which is the dominate thing in the burrito. It tastes like someone heated the chicken on the grill without adding any seasoning at all. The burrito comes with lettuce and tomato but you really couldn't taste either once they were combined in the burrito shell with the meat. If there is cheese added, I couldn't taste it. They do give you a pretty decent size burrito which is what led me to giving this place 3 Stars instead of 2. Service 3 Stars: After taking my order and delivering the food, I never saw the waiter again until it was time to pay. Atmosphere 3 Stars: the ambiance is pretty much a basic Mexican restaurant. I'm not sure if the central air is working but I was building up a sweat eating the burrito. If they do have central air they definitely need to turn it up a notch.

Yelp
These are the types of places i love. A laid back dining experience, with that nice "hole in the wall" feel to it. Wonderful attentive service that is hard to find in many restaurants nowadays. Food is absolutely delicious. Recommend for an impromptu night out, looking for a nice little sit down restaurant with a delicious menu! I had the camaron a la diabla. A delicious spicy shrimp entree that I can't wait to go back for!

Yelp
New name, same owner, different menu! Don Jesus y Familia is a cozy, bright, and friendly Mexican Restaurant that balances great flavors, freshness, and authenticity for an adventurous Midwest palette. Every bite is perfectly seasoned with enough salt, spice, fresh herbs, fat, and a pop of lime. Try the quesabirria tacos. This is a gorgeous taco dish made with pot roast stewed in Mexican broth served with a cup of consume for dipping. It comes with rice and refried beans. Very filling and delicious! Add a side of fresh pickled carrots y jalapeños, and a smooth and rich guacamole, you have yourself the perfect feast. Service is casual and easily going. Order and pay at the register or at the table. Don't forget to tip!

Yelp
The food is simple but great made with tons of care and love, family owned and operated with extra care and great service

Yelp
First timer today & will absolutely be back. Burrito was so good! Quick & friendly service.

Yelp
The service here is awful. It's run by a bunch of kids. Had to wait 10 minutes for someone to come to the table and then another 10 minutes before I was able to get something to drink. Our food set up on the counter for five minutes and got cold, and they still brought it to the table even though we saw it sitting there the whole time. of course when they brought the table it was cold and we sent it back and asked for fresh hot stuff. 20 minutes later it was told it would be another. Five minutes was so disgusted with the service it just lost my appetite and left

Vanesa M.

Yelp
First time coming to the restaurant. The food was good, well seasoned, nicely prepared. Everything was fresh. The service was good too. Not too busy. We will come again.

Yelp
Amazing food, great service highly recommend ordering the "red dipping tacos " with your choice of protein!

T D.

Yelp
I ordered a chicken taco salad and fries. The salad was terrible and the fries looked like old leather. This was my first time and last.

Jorge A.

Yelp
The burritos are big and can feed two people. However the beef was too dry and thin. It seemed more like shavings than actually chopped beef. The pork tacos were good. I don't recommend the sliced peppers with cheese tacos. No cheese at all. It was just a taco with a few slices of peppers.

Yelp
This is our new go to spot for Mexican takeout. There is technically dine in seating, but it looks awkward and I would be uncomfortable enjoying a meal with a bunch of folks waiting for their takeout orders hovering over my table. The portions are larger and the prices are lower than other spots in the area. Their guac is made to order (which you can usually see while you are waiting). I usually go for the steak chimichanga, golden crispy stuffed full of meat, with lettuce and tomato served on the side for a little freshness. My husband has spent years in the area complaining that he missed the big a$$ burritos that he grew up with in the city. He has finally met his match with their XL burrito, the size is ridiculous but the price of $14 is cheap (see photo)! And the agua de Jamaica is delicious! The staff has always been very friendly. Admittedly the amount of time you're given over the phone for a pickup is greatly underestimated. Plan on at least another 10-15 minutes once you arrive. Veer away from your usual spot and give them a try!

Paulla G.

Yelp
Everything is delicious. The burritos are giant! Just hope the A/C works better when it's hot out

Andyr R.

Yelp
We stopped for lunch, service was good, we both had the tacos al pastor they seamed on the dry side and we did not like the way they were cooked.
google avatar

Robert H.

Yelp
Best authentic burritos around! I order the Large burrito which is the size of a fire log! Excellent every time!

Lizette G.

Yelp
Love it here. Service is great. Food is authentic. Love their enchiladas and steak tacos.
google avatar

Sandy L.

Yelp
The menu had the familiar standards but also many that you will not find in the bigger cookie cutter Mexican restaurants. A small family business, the food from scratch really well flavored, not overly salted. Lots of cheese on the enchiladas and creama underneath. Red sauce, very good. Tasty beans and rice. It is casual inside but comfortable, good parking in back.

Yelp
When I tell you this place is a bang for your buck im not kidding! The amount of food you get for what u pay is unbelievable and the food is AMAZING! Service Is good too! My daughter and I ate at the restaurant and have to say it is definitely worth the 40 min ride! We will be back!
google avatar

John E.

Yelp
This place has horrible food & they are ridiculously over price. I wouldn't ever step foot back in the crap box & I certainly DO NOT recommend this place! I can't believe they are in business.
google avatar

Yelp
Moving to Indiana from chicago I was dying for some good Mexican food and I'm so happy I found this place! Love the food and fast service! Highly recommend

Yelp
I had no idea about this place. I use reviews when I don't know, and I was not disappointed. The burrito suizo is delicious and huge. I shared it with another person, and we still didn't finish it. Everyone who works there is super friendly and professional.
google avatar

Yelp
So many restaurants to visit and I've found this one is truly authentic! Taste just like my moms cooking! Delicious fresh guacamole and pico de Gallo!
google avatar

Denise A.

Yelp
This place is fantastic! The food is so good and the family is the nicest! I found this place a few months ago when I was looking for same day catering. The pictures of the food looked yummy and the reviews were outstanding so I gave them a try! Let me say not only did they have my food ready 3hrs after I ordered it was so fresh and hot that I was amazed. I mean this family knows how to get the job done! I ordered again for my daughters birthday party and they did it again! 45 tacos and 2 family burrito Suzia's guacamole salsa and chips! 1 taco left after the party! Another hit! I love this place! This is now my go to spot for good Mexican food! Thank you Don Andres#3!!

Yelp
We have been ordering from here more often. I definitely have been enjoying the food we order. We dined in yesterday. My dinner was beyond delicious!! The flavoring was on point, Great tasting. Had the Enchilada dinner (chicken). My hubby had the milanesa dinner, he devoured his!! Lol so you know that was delicious as well. Looking forward to trying more items from here.
google avatar

Tina B.

Yelp
Had the veggie tacos and nacho platter. It is always so much food! We've eaten here several times and always leave stuffed. I love their Mexican rice. Be sure to add it to whatever you're ordering. The staff are friendly and make our visits enjoyable.

Mohammed H.

Yelp
literally will never step foot inside this trash place again not only did they make me wait 35 min for my order when I clearly saw people ordering the same tacos I did get there food before me the food came out trash no seating if I could have gave them no stars I would they fell off and definitely lost me as a customer
google avatar

Yelp
Let me tell u how great it is to stumble on a gem like this. First, the customer service is off the wall. Went in for tacos, started talking about their menudo. Guess they were preping for the weekend (only offered on Sat/Sun) & offered me some. Who am I to say no, especially since there is a blizzard going on. Back to the tacos, delicious. Now as for this sneak pre

Yelp
Best Mexican restaurant in the area. Very friendly staff, their food is delicious, and their prices are fair.

Judy M H.

Yelp
EXCELLENT FOOD! We ordered steak nachos, quesadillas, steak dinner and it was delicious with healthy portions, plenty to take home for the next day. EXCELLENT SERVICE We will be back again.

Karen R.

Yelp
We love this restaurant. The food is really fresh and delicious, and the owners and wait staff are lovely. It's a sweet neighborhood place. Try the guac! It's fantastic! Mexican breakfasts are favorites of ours--big enough for two meals and very reasonably priced. Since the lock down we've picked up food, but they are also serving in the restaurant, masked up. Support your neighborhood restaurants!

Yelp
I've only had the steak and tongue tacos haven't tried anything else. Steak tacos were good, but the tongue tacos are freaking magic!!! Been back 6 times just for some tongue tacos in 3 weeks. Very consist, not one bad experience. Friendly staff. Place is small but nice. I still need to actually have a sit down experience, only have taken my food to go.
google avatar

Cedric W.

Yelp
Seeing is believing. This place is awesome! Great customer service and great food a must try and portions are generous.
google avatar

Tessa S.

Yelp
Love the food. I is a great dinner meal when it's late or you don't feel like cooking a meal. It's a good dinner meal on Friday or for the weekend. It's a great meal size. The staff are really nice and are busy.

Yelp
Dopey. very fresh food great customer service peZole only served on weekend highly recommended

Yelp
Don Andres #3 is a quaint little family owned Mexican restaurant. We love it! The queso fundido is very unique and delicious. The tamales are very flavorful and generous portion. Also has awesome Mexican breakfast selections. This place could be over looked as it sits in a strip mall on ridge rd. Dont make that mistake. Highly recommend it. The whole family works . They are very sweet and you can tell they love pleasing the customer!
google avatar

Whitney D.

Yelp
How they managed to mess up pre-cooked sausages, I will never know. Very mediocre food good only for Hoosiers who have never been to Chicago.

Andrew P.

Yelp
One of the best Mexican joints I've ever been to. Food was very reasonably priced for the quantity and especially the quality. Would definitely recommend.

Kathryn K.

Yelp
I love Don Andres. They have the best guacamole. Everything there is good and very reasonably priced. I can't say enough about the staff, always friendly and welcoming. Looking for a family-owned, local restaurant that has good food, Don Andres 3 is a great choice. Buy local.

Ford m.

Yelp
Not sure what everyone else got that taste good here, but my steak suizo burrito was the worst burrito iv ever had. The sauce, which normally is suppose to be ranchero was a pico de gallo, which was a downer but i moved passed that. The meat, not sure if its actually steak, was the saltiest low quality you can get. After a few bites, I actually had to throw this monstrosity away. I will give this place another shot due to the other reviews, but definitely will avoid the steak at all cost.

Amy C.

Yelp
Solid Mexican food. I'm obsessed with their steak nachos and they have good rice and beans. I've dined in and carried out and had good experiences with both!! The food is delicious, you get a good portion for leftovers.
google avatar

Rafael P.

Yelp
I come here almost weekly. They're very quick, polite and the food is delicious. I'd recommend this place to anyone in the area that needs a taco night. Get the hot or mild sauce, and if you can, try their home made tamales. Their food is yoga flame.
google avatar

Aurora B.

Yelp
The homemade chicken soup is good...not great but good. I ordered a carne asada to go and they charged me $17 for it which I thought was ridiculous. It was like shoe leather! Tacos are just ok. Won't be going back any time soon.

Mandy H.

Yelp
Average food, inexpensive. "Steak" chimi was like ground beef and came with nothing on top of the shell like most restaurants. Chips and salsa were not great. We ordered queso fundido, but it came with a bunch of sauce and little cheese. Food was mediocre: not bad, not great for sure. Really good rice though.
google avatar

Sarah B.

Yelp
They are polite and the food is decent. They have great tamales and salsas. Always consistent.
google avatar

Jay Z.

Yelp
I love this joint. Amazing food, fast and not expensive. The people that work there make you feel at home. Totally my spot.
google avatar

daniel m.

Yelp
Not good. Actually bad. Dried up no seasoned meat. I don't usually complain Atleast as long it was somewhat eatable but it was bad. Mentioned it to waitress And she just smiled. So apparently no English. Comeon I'm rooting for you. I love mexican food and want you to rule. Let's make this happen. I'll even volunteer to kick you into shape.

Vixen T.

Yelp
The food was so good!!!! The taste was so authentic better than most places that I have tried!! I cleaned my plate and so did my friend. Please try the Tropical Long Island, it was amazing and had a sista feeling right!!! Oh and my waitress was the best!
google avatar

Michael V S.

Yelp
ive been here a bunch of times. mostly for breakfast. I moved here from blue island, it has a little mexico, in general this area doesn't know authentic Mexican food. the one star reviews are a prime example. not the best but pretty good. the breakfast is exactly what I was looking for, the torta melenasa was perfect, .the tamale was microwaved.the chili relenos was good too. rice and beans are average. if you like fries and ketchup or want to get a cheese burger too, go to another "Mexican" resturaunt near munster. other wise this will work
google avatar

Sean M.

Yelp
I had an overall good experience at this place. The food was great but a 14 year old kid was serving me so the service gets 2 stars. The steak was cooked to perfection and the prices weren't bad at all. I'll be making a return to this burshnyish

Carol M.

Yelp
Loved the chile relleno taco. Burritos a meal itself and very good. Chicken quesadillas delish. Very affordable and good quality. Staff very friendly.
