I was a little disappointed with the food. it seems like they use the cheapest ingredients and canned food. Rice and beans weren't the best, and we randomly ordered cheese dip. I'm not sure if it was on the menu or not, but it wasn't queso. Just canned jalapeno cheese. The guacamole and salsa were good, nothing to write home about. We got fajitas, the chicken was simple, and steak was good but fatty. And as you can see in our pictures, mainly came with onions. Not many peppers, unfortunately. Our drinks were okay but just seemed like a pretty made mix. The prices are a little cheaper but still ran 2 people $100 with gratuity.

I should’ve taken the photo when the food was served. I immediately started eating it and it was delicious. I got a pupusa of beans and cheese, which was great. And I got a pupusa with cheese and loroco, which I never tasted before. Loroco is a kind of flower actually. Anyway, it was delicious and I highly recommend trying it!

I used to live across the street from Don Juan. It’s a great spot to get takeout. I would get the nachos or the fajita platters. They give you large portions, the cheese on the nachos is nicely melted, and the carne asada/chicken are nicely seasoned. They have good margaritas, and there’s sometimes live music if you go on a Saturday night. I wouldn’t necessarily travel across all of DC just to go to Don Juan, but if you live in the neighborhood I’d definitely recommend checking it out.

Food that we asked wasn't the greatest soup had not a pleasant odor. My partner soup also was we poor with the ingredients, chips they served were not at their best, beer i asked wasn't cold enough more like warm beer & price for the type of food we ordered should be more professional at the way they make their food

Couple Gringos here. We loved the vibe of the hood. We were looking for the Michelin Star place, but it was too busy so we gave Don Juan a try and it was our Hero today. We enjoyed the smaller portions (larger available), but didn't need to drag leftovers home. The flavors were authentic and service Mui Bueno! We will be back. So lovely.. Oh, we loved the hot sauce and turns out they sell it there. Enjoy!

We stopped in here because we heard they had good pupusas. Naturally, we ordered every kind they offered and add in a couple of tamales as well to round it all out. All the food was good, and the staff was very nice!

Not what I expected when I ordered this pan de pollo salvadoreño. 😖 lacked flavor and that freshness that a typical pan de pollo salvadoreño usually has. I’ll still to my usual of chimichanga next time.

Yelp
Fire pupusas and lengua tacos. It's also open very late which is very nice. Had a good experience

Yelp
This place has ok food but the service is horrible. Also they add a tip to the bill regardless of your party size. I would skip it.

Yelp
Decided on this spot for takeout lunch today and was not disappointed. I got the chicken burrito platter for $17. Hearty meal with all the sides. The burrito had a nice cheesey sauce on the actual burrito which was different. Make it super moist. Seemed pretty quiet in both the restaurant and carry out section. Would deff recommend to give it a try if your in mount pleasant.

Yelp
I visited Don Juan with some coworkers. We were seated quickly and the service was great. I forgot the name of our waitress but she had a pixie cut and was very friendly. Chips and salsa are complimentary as is the case at most Latin restaurants. Overall the flavor of the food was great. We got shredded chicken nachos for the table and I personally got the carne asada quesadilla. I just wish the portions could have been bigger. There are other restaurants that will serve almost double the amount of food for a similar price. Side note: parking around the restaurant is a pain. I'd recommend public transport or rideshare.

Yelp
Came with a bunch of pals for a celebratory meal on a Thursday night. I had a reservation that I made online but I honestly forgot to mention it when I arrived. No problem, we got a bunch of seats right away. We enjoyed their wide selection of juices, beers, cocktails and smoothies. Food came out fast and hot. I will say my one dining friend got a taco salad that was mostly chips. There were even more chips inside the taco bowl, seemed a bit cheap. My fajita was tasty and filing. Service to get the check was a bit slow but otherwise than than, the staff are attentive and patient. Great place for a social hour!

Yelp
I've been craving good Mexican food and I stopped in wanting a good crispy beef taco and salsa. I order Daily Special # 6 which is a crispy taco, enchilada, and pupusa. To note: this is a Salvadoran spot. So, the pupusa was decent but Ercelia's down the street is better. The crispy taco was shredded chicken and I should have gone to Taco Bell. The enchilada was shredded chicken and they seem to have forgotten the enchilada sauce. Ay, dios mio. The chips were decent but the salsa tasted like canned tomatoes. There's no heat. No citrus. No bueno, mis amigos.

Yelp
Delicious, reasonable prices, friendly. They're patient and cooperative when I try to speak Spanish. Big menu. Fun atmosphere with a mural, tiki bar, deejay often, outdoor patio. Nice location facing the little plaza in the small commercial district of Mount Pleasant. Appears to be family-owned and been there a while. Go support them!

Sam F.

Yelp
Don Juan is an awesome, no-frills Salvadoran place we're lucky to have in the neighborhood. Unfortunately, it seems to have gone downhill post-pandemic. I hit the patio this weekend and ordered my usual margarita. Only courtesy kept me from spitting it out on the spot, since it tasted like urine. The food is still solid, though pricier now post-COVID. Service is still top notch. Just avoid the drinks, I guess?

Kay D.

Yelp
BEWARE: they add 20% gratuity for parties of two by default. In terms of food: Avacado was rotten. Our Salvadoran egg platter had broken egg shells in there. The fried beans tasted stale. Thankfully we were sitting outside because the inside smelled like urine. This was our second time here and the first time was pleasant. Unfortunately we will not come here again.

Yelp
Today a group of friends decided to have some drinks at Don Juan. We were seated at the patio and served by M* During our stay, we felt rushed to order food and more drinks (which was the case). After getting tired of this awful service by M*, we asked for the check. We left a 15% tip, AS SUGGESTED on the bill (M* service was awful and unpleasant). That's when M* has the audacity to confront us by saying "this Tip is not enough". Unacceptable and disrespectful behavior, her tip could have been better if her service was different. We will never go back to this place!

Yelp
I LOVED this place. Fast service. Nice staff. And great food! I got the Combo #7 and it was delicious! Wonderful vegetarian variety (that can sometimes be hard to find). Definitely recommend, can't wait to come back.

Yelp
Take-out order. Service, value, taste and overall experience.... Awesome!!! Between this and past orders, I've had the steak nachos, chimichangas, fajitas, and more.

Yelp
The outdoor seating area is nice, but the food left a lot to be desired. I got carne asada tacos al pastor, there was not a lot of cheese, but a lot of cilantro. The steak was cooked to death and cut up into little bits instead of juicy slices. The taco tortillas instantly fell apart. The tacos came with a side of beans, Mexican rice and a "salad". The beans were actually the best part and tasty, the rice was ok and the "salad" was a piece of lettuce and a slice of tomato drowning in ranch. My relatives got quesadillas that did look good, but I think there is some better Mexican food in the area.

Patrick V.

Yelp
although the food was decent the service was awful and the drinks weren't well made. I tried the acclaimed burrito steak and it was nothing to write home about, i can make better food at home!
google avatar

Rachel V.

Yelp
Very good food at reasonable prices! The service is sometimes spotty (not refilling water) but the papusas are worth their weight in cheese! They are fantastic! Pork, cheese, bean/cheese! Or all of the above! Try a daily special- at under $10- you can't go wrong! Large plate of food, homemade delights, and quality ingredients! Also, the margaritas are cold and strong! We will be back again'

Yelp
I absolutely love Don Juan. Get the egg platter. All of the best foods life has to offer on one plate. Very authentic food, friendly staff and a great patio. It's a very unassuming restaurant, but honestly the place to be!
google avatar

Andrew G.

Yelp
Best place to be at! Outdoor dinning, amazing food and drinks at the right price! Definitely recommend and support small businesses!

Yelp
We sat outside due to Covid-19. The area is very nice but we did have a fly problem. The chicken fajita was absolutely delicious! Great flavor. But unfortunately, the mango margarita was not so good. It was very thick, syrupy, and tasted like nothing but tequila. When I called our server over to ask if I could substitute it for something else, about four of the employees crowded our table. It made me a bit nervous since we are in the midst of a pandemic. Not all of their workers wear their mask over there noses either. One of the employees ended up taking my margarita back to fix and while it was a tad bit better, it was still pretty difficult to get through. All in all, I may come back for another fajita, but the margaritas are a no no for me.
google avatar

Michael A.

Yelp
Got the daily special #6 (taco, enchilada, and pupusa with beans, rice and sour cream) for lunch take out. Very quick and friendly service. Food was delicious -- especially the taco and beans/rice -- and still hot after I walked home. If you're in the mood for Salva Mex I definitely recommend this place!
google avatar

Claire B.

Yelp
Stumbled by this place and am so glad we did!! The pupusas are to die for. Did not try anything else, but would recommend coming here just for the pupusas!
google avatar

Shreya P.

Yelp
If you are looking for authentic food, this place is not. It's very Tex mex. Pupusas were good, wouldn't recommend enchiladas. Margaritas seemed watered down. Won't be going back.
google avatar

Tina S.

Yelp
I love the patio seating here, a huge redeeming quality! The menu is very long, which is something I'm always wary of. We all got pupusas, except our poor vegetarian friend who got veggie tacos which looked like the pieces of vegetable decor which gets added as plate filler perched atop a tortilla. All that to say we won't be coming here again with veggie friends. The pupusas however were very good as they tend to be. We split a pitcher of the house margarita which was shamefully small for $30, if they were to remedy this issue I'd give them an extra star.
google avatar

Emily Y.

Yelp
Big fan of Don Juan for staying open so late serving quality late night munchies. My go-to is the chicken tamale appetizer, though the guacamole, burrito, and pupusas aren't bad either. The drinks (horchata and tamarindo) are also on point. We tend to eat in the brightly lit cafe side, which can get a bit cold whenever the door opens. The people who work here are super friendly and open to trying to make things on request. Though it lacks ambiance, the quality of the food and service are more than enough to compensate for it.
google avatar

Sahra P.

Yelp
Absolutely amazing place , I dive almost 2 hours to come to this restaurant. Wonderful customer service and amazing food.
google avatar

Aditi D.

Yelp
Great food for the price! Got the shrimp nachos and my friends got the pupusas. We also got margaritas togo - the service was very fast and the nachos were very tasty - would have liked a little more shrimp on the shrimp nachos, but everything was fresh and great! Will be back here again.

Annette S.

Yelp
The management is the nicest, kindest, and friendliest in town. I love this place. Food is tasty, the staff is attentive rive, and the BATHROOMS are clean and tidy.
google avatar

Meg D.

Yelp
My husband, who is Salvadoran, and I go here all the time as one of our neighborhood spots. It's a fun, lively ambiance (especially on a weekend night with karaoke or during a soccer game), and the food is good and well priced. It also has a great outdoor space, where when the weather is nice its fun to grab some drinks, food and chips and people watch. I've caught up with many friends over drinks at those tables. We also joke that the mural of the VERY busty women making pupusas sensually isn't too accurate, but the otherwise vibe is pretty cool :)
google avatar

Shannon L.

Yelp
I've only ever ordered to-go from this restaurant. I've been meaning to dine-in since I moved into the neighborhood because I'm always really curious about the cocktails with an upside down corona hanging out whenever I pass by. One day. Otherwise, my to-go experience has always been sub par. On my last visit, I ordered a frozen house margarita to drink while I waited. It didn't taste great for the price, and I ended up not finishing it. The food is decent. I usually get the enchiladas, and sometimes, I'll splurge and get the nachos. I do not recommend the nachos. Maybe it is just the fact that it's to-go nachos, and I can't get it home fast enough. The cheese is really rubbery and the guacamole seems like the kind you can usually find at the front of Safeway for 5 bucks. The enchiladas are solid, but nothing to write home about. For the price, it is not the best deal. I recommend this place if you're looking for a quick fix of Mexican food. Otherwise, I would recommend walking down to Haydees or over to Mezcalero if you're feeling fancy.
google avatar

James H.

Yelp
It's meh. The food is basic and overpriced for what you get. The margarita mix tastes like it's from a jug. There are so many Mexican restaurants in the area now; this place needs to step its game up. A side of rice and beans for $8?! My crispy tacos were soggy and the food generally lacks flavor. Kinda like cafeteria food, to be honest.

Asya T.

Yelp
Delicious Tex Mex and Salvadoran with spacious outdoor seating and friendly service. Came for weekday lunch and was impressed with food quality. Especially enjoyed shredded chicken nachos, guacamole, and loroco pupusa.

Aliza G.

Yelp
I used to live next to Don Juan's so I've probably eaten half the menu. It's a great atmosphere (primarily outside). It's a little pricey, but if you want good food for less money their children's' meals are great!

Yelp
A semi-large group of us came here for a birthday on a Saturday evening. We did not have reservations, but upon seeing us, the staff just pulled together a few tables and that was that. Most of us agreed that the food was pretty good. I had the chicken enchiladas because I like cheese, some other people had the fajitas, and yeah, good stuff. We did have to wait awhile for our food, which we only started to notice toward the end of the wait, but right around that time, like magic, a plate of yucca appeared to take the place of our empty chips and salsa basket. I also had a strawberry margarita, which was pretty delicious. The great part of our experience was certainly the staff. Since it was our friend's birthday, we wanted to embarrass her, so at the bar I asked if they did anything for such occasions. They do - tiramisu (awesome). They were very cute in how they brought it out, secretly checking with us to make sure it was the "right time" to bring out the dessert, and also playing a birthday song on the jukebox as they were bringing it out. I also bought her a shot of tequila, and a guy who overheard my conversation with the bartender offered to play that country song "Tequila makes her clothes fall off" on the jukebox for us. It was a little weird, but it was nice. That song is actually a lot less scandalous than it sounds. The atmosphere is really nice and laid-back, and I appreciate that. Things were starting to pick up as we were leaving at 10...there were noticeable black lights and I think the disco ball was about to come down. I'd go again. *Note: It helps to have a Spanish speaker in your party, as the waitress did have a bit of trouble understanding us.
google avatar

Gayle G.

Yelp
Best. Quesadillas. Ever. Yes, I could stop with a three word review..but where is the fun in that? I miss living so close to this place, but it is probably beter for my waist line. The dining room is seperated from the take out but the staff is the same-- very friendly! Even when I go back to "visit" they humor me and let me practice my Spanish. The decor is..um...unique. A moose head AND a disco ball? At a Mexican restaurant? Yep- it happens at Don Juan's. Be sure to order the quintisential quesadillas. The cerviche is delicious, too, especially the shrimp cerviche- the shrimp is not too shrimpy and the spices used (cilantro = perfecto) are a great compliment.
google avatar

Rick S.

Yelp
I'm reluctant to give Don Juan a bad review, as it is a neighborhood joint with decent prices, but the food disappoints. On a recent trip, we got a vegetarian platter, but it was just a starch overload (with little flavor). The pupusa was better than I've had in the past, but that's probably because of the huge amount of cheese (and everything benefits from cheese). Otherwise, tamale was dry, avocado didn't taste very fresh, plantain was greasy, and there was probably a teaspoon of cabbage slaw at most. It's hard to think of a vegetarian platter that would have any fewer actual vegetables! Margaritas are on the sweet side, so maybe that's a redeeming quality, but I won't come back for food.
google avatar

Jessica R.

Yelp
I enjoyed the pupusa here. We shared a cheese and bean pupusa just to try it, and each bite was yummy. It even came with a little slaw that gave each bite some kick. For my meal I got fajitas, and they were okay. The chicken tasted a little odd, though the onions were nice. The usual accoutrements plate it came with was disappointing, though--very little in the way of salsa and no lettuce or cheese... just lots of rice and beans, and then a tiny bit of guac, salsa, and sour cream. My husband got lomo saltado and the bite I had was okay but not great. Not sure I'd come back, honestly :( Maybe just for the pupusas?

Yelp
Fried red snapper. Yum! I stopped in since this spot is just across the street from my new apartment and opted for the carry-out section of the restaurant as the main building seems to be engaged in an eternal fiesta. I ordered the fried snapper that came with rice and green salad along with a couple tortillas and all in all it was OK. The fish was a little over fried but OK once I squeezed on some lime. I don't think I would order it again but I will probably return to the restaurant.

Alexis N.

Yelp
The food was outstanding, but the flavored margaritas were terrible. We asked to send our drinks back or exchange them for something we liked, but they denied our request. I am very disappointed because I was really looking forward to Taco Tuesday and margaritas. The experience was subpar.

N C.

Yelp
I'm giving a 3 stars due to the fact my sister and dad enjoyed their food. My food was was ok but that's not what turned me off. It was the service that really ruined the experience I just wanted to leave. The server tried to play dumb multiple time like she didn't understand what I was saying. Rolled her eyes when I kept asking questions as I recently had gallbladder surgery so I'm limited to what I can and can't eat. When we were done and she was ready to get her money my dad asked for a box for my food. I went to ask again because she started walking off while he was still asking. My dad said she heard and I left it alone. After paying she came back and asked if we wanted a box. So you do know then smh then we went inside to use the restroom as we had a long walk and more sightseeing. They barely wanted to tell us. It felt as if we were not wanted as as we sat down. They were attentive to only a select few... we might've caught them on a bad day I'll give them that but I highly doubt that as I watched them interact with people. And how to choose to listen or assist. Only bad experience I had during my trip.

Yelp
Sopa de res all day every day. They make it just right. Their tamales de gallina and the pupusas are really good too. They also have giant TV screens for Champions League games. I give this place two thumbs up if you are looking for something casual with good latín food

Edwin B.

Yelp
Food is always amazing when I come, I'm familiar with the owners. But last night I went with 2 other people (4person table total) and the older waitress DEMANDED both parties tip her. She walked away with over $40 in tips because my friend tipped her $18 on one bill. She forced me last time to tip her when I didn't like her service and she got our order wrong so I knew this time I wasn't going to so for the tip I put zero. This twat comes back and tells me I HAVE to tip her! Where is the sign it posted that It's MANDATORY that I have to tip you especially if I didn't like you? I understand if we had 6 people or more but it was a 4 person table. Usually when we come none of the other waitresses ever asks for a tip so I always tip them. She really destroyed an experience for one of my favorite restaurants, I spend easily $80+ every time I come but now I definitely won't be back because of her. Seriously need to get rid of that older women she's driving away customers by being desperate.

Yelp
I have been here many times and enjoy not only the food but the casual atmosphere, especially on the patio. I usually order the burritos. Fresh tasting and not overwhelmingly large. The plantains are also quite good. Slightly sweet and not over cooked. It's a great place to spend time. With friends for food, drink and talking.

Anai C.

Yelp
The pupusas didn't have any flavor and they tasted burnt bc the meat was burnt. No shade but my mother in law makes them better and she don't even own a restaurant.

Yelp
One of the best Mexican restaurants that I can remember. Very authentic and great service.

Yelp
Realy enjoyed the food and the service was great. Verity of many authentic dishes. I particularly enjoyed the pantains. The chicken casadia was excellent and loaded with chicken. I didnt2get to have dessert, but will be going back for sure.

Yelp
Good prices; nice staff; yummy eats. If only they believed me when I ordered in Spanish :(

Yelp
I went to Don Juan's midweek around 7 or 8 with a few friends. The outside seating was comfy and restaurant seems authentic, but my meal in particular just wasn't very wowing. I should admit that I'm from Central America and have had really good food in Mexico etc. so am bound to be less forgiving. Many entrees come with rice, beans and garden salad which were fine but my disappointment was with the tacos which should have been a safe bet. They come on the fluffy corn taco with pico de Gallo, chicken/beef, and avocado--all usually very delicious on their own, but for some reason it just wasn't that flavorful together. Of my friends, one got the burrito which was great for him because it was filled with veggies, and the other got horchata which I tried and enjoyed. I appreciate that the servers were attentive and the food came faster than I expected. Though, for the price, I would might prefer to go to a fast casual spot.

Yelp
Don Juan does me a solid when it comes to my standard Tex mex and salvadorian fare in mtp. Not the best but consistent and a neighborhood staple. Pupusas are reasonably priced and pretty tasty ($2/ea) and the fajita platter is stacked high for a reasonable 13.95. Drinks are decent, but no beer on draft (so no pitchers booooo). Service is great as well.

Yelp
This is not the fanciest Mexican restaurant in DC (or even in Mount Pleasant) but if you're looking for excellent food at a reasonable price, this is a great option. The service is consistently polite and efficient. Most important, they're the only restaurant in the area that has ample outdoor seating, making it a great choice on nice fall and spring days.

Yelp
Yesss! This is my favorite place for Mexican and Salvadorian food in DC. The staff is super friendly, and the food is very affordable. I love the vegetarian platter: fried plantains, black beans and rice, a pupusa, tamale...enough food for two meals, and it's only $12. Don Juan is also my favorite place for late night food in DC, after a night out drinking and dancing. I always recommend this spot to my friends. Don't wait to check it out!
