The Ultimate Dining and Drinking Guide to Oregon City

"Homestyle Mexican food can be found at this deceptively large restaurant with a second dining room in the back. Request a complimentary salsa sampler, which arrives with a basket of chips and takes diners through a Hot Ones-like gauntlet of house-made salsas at a variety of heat levels — from the mild salsa verde to the medium creamy chipotle to the strikingly hot Black Mamba. Temper the spice with a creamy horchata and order one of the house specialties; the pollo en mole and puerco en chile verde both pack flavor and arrive with tortillas for sopping up sauce." - Michelle DeVona, Janey Wong

Used to be a regular 9 years ago. The place hasn’t changed in that time. Large seating area, stellar customer service and free chips and a buffet selection of salsa. I got a burrito as a salad to lighten the carb load. I think it’s best to keep things as they are. :) The highlight was the chipotle creama salsa. Burritos were okay. But supporting the local, independent spot is on spot.

Google
Excellent flavors and Excellent service. Guac and different salsas we're supwr tasty , the pozole soup was super good. I recommend fajitas , and trio plate, red and green pork chunks with beef enchilada . So tasty !

Update: I have returned to partake in their fare. The food is still up to standards. They had some new salsa's to try. The owner was running front of house and said they've been there for 9 years now. We drove from Beaverton specifically for lunch. Someone seems to know what they're doing at Don Pepe's. They start you off with standard chips, beans and an excellent mild salsa. The chef decided to add some chorizo to the beans (yum) Then they bring you a sampler of 7 salsas of varying heat. I was obsessed with the white salsa (lime & heat). My wife and I ordered combo platters. They brought us a satisfying posole that reminded me of pho. There was meat in a well developed broth with fresh, crunchy vegetables. We both wanted enchiladas and they were well made with proper spicing, great cheese to sauce to filling ratios. I will be coming back for these. The other item on our combo plates were meat in sauce. My wife had the puerco en chile verde (pork in green sauce). I had the puerco en chile Colorado (pork in red sauce). What surprised me is that the pork was cooked perfectly to temp instead of boiled to falling apart. This made it tender and not fibrous. I am satisfied and I think all should partake.

Google
Fabulous Mexican meals, prepared fresh and delicious. We went here to celebrate my birthday on the last night that inside dining was allowed in restaurants before the "Covid-19 freeze 2020" through Thanksgiving, mandated by the governor. They blessed me with a complimentary birthday dinner. These people are fantastic! Be sure to try their 'flight' of salsas, delightful! PLEASE SUPPORT SMALL FAMILY BUSINESSES and BUY LOCAL, as long as take-out dining has to continue.

Google
Lots of different flavors and spicy salsa choices. Really great chips and salsa. Was a bit of a wait for food. Was told everything is made to order. Shrimp Ceviche was really good. A little expensive though.

Came for some dinner before Rocky Smith's Haunted Christmas Walking tour. Great food, great service. The restroom was stocked and clean. The servers were friendly and knowledgeable. I would definitely come again.

Google
I like food, almost everything. It simply should be well prepared. This is not texmex, rather more of what I think traditional Mexican inspired food can be (like a day in Mexico City). It's interesting, inspired, and I think delicious. I enjoyed the house margaritas as well. Say hello to Pepè too!

Google
Takeout dinner for three $63. Two of the orders were prepared incorrectly and could not be salvaged. The tacos at $8 a piece were underwhelming. The veggies were fresh but the chicken was bland. The $16 carne asada burrito was twice the amount of a chipotle burrito. In my opinion chipotle uses a higher quality meat. I would not recommend it. The taco salad was consumed. My son just said that it had no flavor. We ordered through their web site that uses DINDIN. This company adds a large percentage to the cost of your order. If you still want to eat here I would recommend calling your order in

Yelp
We found this restaurant on Yelp, and thought it would be good for a casual early dinner before graduation.... ABSOLUTELY blew us away!!! They were short staffed, but worked hard to accommodate us, and were apologizing the entire time. I have had much slower service with an attitude. The food was worth the wait, and because everything is fresh and made to order, it took a little extra time. The homemade salsas were delicious and all very unique. Authentic Mexican food made with lots of love that shows!

Yelp
We have lived in OC for 11 years and this was our first visit but it won't be our last. Our waiter brought us a sample platter of salsa which was amazing!!! I ordered the hard taco platter and the taco shells are made in house and perfection. The chicken and carne asada could have had a little more flavor but overall lunch was really good! Cutest little location with super friendly staff!

Yelp
I think the best thing about this place is their variety of chip dips and salsas you can pair with the main entrees. However by no means would I consider this to be authentic Mexican food. I might come back here to get some sides including the chips and salsas but I don't think I would return to get the main things on their menus. I got the burrito and they are served in an American style with a fork and knife. I'm sorry, that's not how Mexican food is served in a Mexican restaurant. The portions are great and the staff is great as well though! I just can't see myself giving this place any higher than 3 stars due to the less than impressive main dishes. They've got a variety to choose from: burritos, tacos, enchiladas, tamales, chiles rellenos, etc. It's a small but personal location and feels a little bare for what it is. I'd go somewhere else for authentic Mexican food.

Yelp
Tried to go to a different place and they were having a private party, so we meandered into this place and found that they had room for us. Our server was attentive and kind. The food a place worth coming back for. We were very pleased and will return

Yelp
Don was great! He prepared a delicious ceviche to start and we ordered the concinitas pibil and chicken mole. Both dishes were great the comcinitas pairing perfectly with the pickled carrot and the mole had a real depth of flavor that you don't often find. Highly recommend this little gem.
google avatar

Yelp
I love this little place in downtown OC. The tacos are so good, different tasty salsas to choose from and delicious fresh guacamole. Good drink menu too! The staff are wonderful. It is definitely one of my favorite places.

Yelp
A MUST TRY salsa flight! Great food and AMAZING service. Thanks again will definitely be back!

Yelp
My goodness this place blew my MIND how delicious it was. Three of us popped in at 7:30 on a Saturday night and were quickly seated. Margaritas were delicious. Bartender/waiter/funny guy was so friendly. The SALSA sampler was so good. Some very spicy. The meals and even the rice and beans were perfect (traditional pinto beans with good old-fashioned lard maybe? Whatever it was they were perfect.) Try the meat that has bacon and chorizo. It's GREAT. This is the real deal. Absolutely coming back.
google avatar

Mariko K.

Yelp
My friend took me here because she had the best tacos of her life there. She was not wrong. I got the chicken mole and it was magical. I don't eat Mexican often, but it was the best I've ever had. Service is very friendly and there's lots of seating. The front area has interesting photos of old Oregon City.

Yelp
Absolutely in love with this quint place. Looks like they're remodeling. Had a couple of mango margaritas and the chicken mole was fabulous, not to sweet or salty. Try their different salsas, I loved the smokey one it's a hot one. The owner is kind, friendly and super jovial, love it! He took our order, made our drinks and was never stressed. The bathroom is super clean, one of the key things I look for in a restaurant. We will be back for sure!
google avatar

Yelp
Amazing pork and awesome selection of salsas to try. The cochinita pibil pork is totally insane!! We will definitely be back!!!
google avatar

Brittany B.

Yelp
We had the best time here! The tray of salsas they brought out was the most amazing thing ever. It was like a salsa flight. Each one was SO good & you can see & taste the time that went into each one. House made horchata was creamy & delicious. Our main entrees were great, rice & beans perfect in flavor. They are the nicest people here, and showed us around and we chatted about all kinds of things. The decor is so great with gorgeous black and white photography throughout, a really neat bar, and murals by the owner's daughter. I won't be going anywhere else in OC. ps if you're reading this pleaseeeee add papas to the menu. As a vegetarian I always say potatoes are the best way to incorporate a meat alternative to any dish. You can do taquitos, tostadas, etc. That would make this 1000/10.
google avatar

Yelp
The best Mexican authentic food hands down! Fresh seafood and great service. And drinks were so good too! I was born and raised in Mexico city and I'm so picky with my Mexican food and I'm blown away with the flavor and freshness of their food!!!
google avatar

James M.

Yelp
My wife is from Mexico City and she can cook, so we are very picky about our Mexican food. With that said this place is the best Mexican food in Oregon period hands down!! The service is top notch#1 if you're in the area or just wanting real authentic top notch service and food you need to go to Don Pepe's!!
google avatar

Yelp
I'm gluten and dairy free for health reasons - the street taco plate is now my favorite sit down taco meal in OC. I wasn't super confident our server knew what gluten was, but everything was fine after. The meat was cooked so well - I got the shredded chicken, regular chicken and pastor. The shredded chicken was my least favorite but still good. I like their different salsa options to mix it up. The atmosphere was a little lacking compared to other downtown OC (just a small spot) or other Mexican spots, but it was comfortable enough and fine for hanging out with a friend and getting some good food. I'll definitely be back!

Yelp
My wife and I just had a fantastic meal at this lovely little restaurant in the historic section of Oregon City. First, the aesthetics of the place are fantastic. Simple, inviting and comfortable. The complimentary chips and salsa were fresh and delicious. The gentleman who served us, Arturo, brought out a small flight of different salsas, varying in heat, for us to try. They were all delicious, though I must admit, a couple were way too hot for me! Dinner came and we were delighted. This was the best Mexican food we've had in many years. The mole was definitely the highlight. Made from scratch (Arturo described the cooking process and even showed us pictures of all the ingredients), perfectly seasoned, and just bursting with flavor. Amazing. Easily the best mole we've ever had. Cannot wait to go back and get it again. And next time we'll remember to take some pics!

Yelp
Delicious chihuahua burrito with a comfortable vibe and incredibly sweet and attentive waitress

Yelp
Delicious food. We enjoyed sitting there. Felt like I was in Me cop or Cuba. Authentic. Clean. Good service
google avatar

Melissa R.

Yelp
This place is amazing! They have a large salsa selection with a variety of flavors and make a great margarita. I had a jalapeño one that was very spicy but delicious!! We split the steak fajitas and they were a good portion for 2 people and tasted great. The servers are all very friendly. We will definitely be back!
google avatar

James H.

Yelp
This is my favorite restaurant! The service is so good, if you come in a couple times and are friendly, the staff remember you and treat you like family. Arturo is the best, they make all their salsas in the back every couple days so it's always fresh and delicious. There is a secret room in the back, so if the front looks full, they likely have space. Eat here!

Seth Y.

Yelp
The salsa's are amazing. Some of the best Mexican food around here. Definitely a place you got to try. Take your family. Very friendly place.

Shannon W.

Yelp
Absolutely amazing flavor and service. We are from out of town and will definitely be coming back just to go here.

Yelp
We went to Don Pepe's for my husbands birthday and it was amazing!!! The food was epic!! We have been looking for a go-to Mexican food place and we found it! Our server was so kind and so funny. She interacted with my kids like a cool aunt and they loved her. She brought them drinks we would never have ordered for them and they both found new favs, always a win. There were six of us and we ordered the queso fundido, three kinds of chimichangas, three kinds of enchiladas, pork verde, tamale, and chile rellenos. Everything was cooked and seasoned perfectly. Our server threw in a yummy cinnamon crisp dessert for my husband and we all shared. We also had the spiked horchata and virgin horchata and it might be the best I have ever had. This is a must go if you are in Oregon City, or worth the drive if you aren't
google avatar

Yelp
Severely overpriced. Not much food for the $ Good food. Tasty salsas. Very disappointed our order was $35 before tip 3 stars because the food is VERY good
google avatar

Bryana N.

Yelp
The food here is delicious. My family and I enjoy eating at Don Pepe's because we love to support family owned businesses. This restaurant is a must try.
google avatar

Sheree W.

Yelp
Amazingly friendly, great service! Food is delicious! Ordered the seafood trio tacos. They do their own margaritas! Probably best I have ever (and I have had a few in my life)! Different sauces available.
google avatar

Janine V.

Yelp
This restaurant is a favorite in downtown Oregon City. 11 members of The West Linn book club celebrated our annual Christmas book exchange here. Delicious food & wonderful service in a clean & charming atmosphere. It was only at the end of our amazing dinner celebration that we learned it was supposed to be their night off. Yes, they opened their doors just for us ! Thank you so much Don Pepe's. We will be back, again & again.
google avatar

Yelp
I migrated to Oregon City after spending nearly 40 years in San Diego. So I've become a bit of an aficionado of Mexican food. Don Pepe's has taken over, as my go to for otherworldly salsas, and fine Mexican cuisine. Don Pepe is such a warm, inviting presence, with a generous love for sharing his remarkable gift. Go and be amazed. Be prepared to bring home leftovers, and make sure you order a take home container or your favorite salsa.
google avatar

Michelle B.

Yelp
One of my favorite Mexican restaurants. The servers are friendly and helpful. The food is absolutely outstanding. They have a "salsa sampler" that may or may not be on the menu but is an absolute must for every visit. The taco trios are the best you will find. The chips come out with their chip salsa (which is so flavorful) and a bean dip that my family could eat by the gallon. We had an absolute feast of a lunch, with 6 people (2 adults, 4 kids), including cocktails and extra Black Mamba salsa to bring home and the total bill was less than we pay in many other restaurants. We all left filled to the gills and ready to nap! Absolutely recommend anytime you're in Oregon City.

Yelp
I just thought this place was so delightful. This is a small family owned business. I understand from my cousin who's visited multiple times the whole family works there. I really really felt like I was walking into their house. Everyone we interacted with was so warm and friendly. This place isn't fancy or over the top, but just really genuine and delicious food. Seriously, if you are in downtown Oregon City try them out. And the pineapple Margarita was outstanding!!! 10 stars for this hidden gem.

Gary M.

Yelp
Great little hole in the wall with really good Mexican food. It's the last original wood structure building in Oregon City. If only its walls could talk and tell of all the changes it's witnessed.
google avatar

John C.

Yelp
Cool atmosphere in the main area and bar. The side is ok. I love how they hang tequila bottles with lights. Pretty cool. The food here is very good. Outstanding salsa and chips. Sometimes you get the restaurant salsa that's just ok. I could make a meal out of this stuff. I had a chicken mix salad, tried to be healthy and was not disappointed. Wife loved the Chile Verde. Dropped this to four stars as service was pretty slow. I get it and we were patient. Would have dropped to 3 stars normally. Great place.

Monica D.

Yelp
Went looking for some good, authentic Mexican cuisine and we finally found it! Darling, hidden gem on Main Street in downtown Oregon City! Warm greeting and welcome right when we walked in. Cozy atmosphere and the restaurant is quite a bit bigger than appears when entering - whole area in the back for seating as well! Full bar with unique drinks offered. Delicious margaritas and had one of the best horchata I've had in a while! Salsa and bean dip had great flavors - different hotness is available for those thrill seekers! We had the pastor burrito and the shrimp tacos. Great flavors and did not leave hungry! Give this place a try - definitely worth a visit. We've tried all of the local Mexican places and this by far outshines them all!
google avatar

Anthony G.

Yelp
Discovered this place a few months back and it's now my favorite Mexican restaurant. I've had the chicken burrito a few times and fajita plate and they've been delicious. The staff has always been friendly and they often give me all the salsa choices so you can try any level of spice and style. Go get yours!
google avatar

Patrick A.

Yelp
Food was OK but overpriced. Service was terrible. Atmosphere is terrible unless you like your mexican food with break-dust and exhaust fumes from the busy street corner.

Bea C.

Yelp
I loved the bartender but now she's gone. Salsa selection if off the chain. I feel like the portions were small. I'll have to give it another try.

Dallas M.

Yelp
I've had many great experiences at Don Pepe's & they deserved a great review way sooner than this!..but tonight's experience finally reminded me to do so. My little family came in for a late dinner after swimming lessons & unfortunately soon after we sat down my 3 year old suddenly got sick. Mar rushed over to help us & made our embarrassing & unexpected incident seem like no big deal. She helped us clean up (totally did NOT expect her to help with that) & then made my son a special little drink to make him feel better. (He talked about it alllllll night) She was so sweet & helpful up until the second we left. I am always, regardless of the circumstances, treated wonderfully when I visit Don Pepe's & this small restaurant deserves all the business in the world. Aside from the customer service the food is absolutely incredible as well. Can't forget that part ;)
google avatar

J A.

Yelp
Good little place for a take out when you want a fast evening meal. We get take out from here at least every few months and have never been disappointed.
google avatar

Billy C.

Yelp
Visited Don Pepe on a whim and was nicely surprised with everything. Pepe the owner was super short handed today so he had to be bartender/server/host but he handled the entire restaurant very smoothly. He was very friendly; you can tell he really enjoys what he does. He recommended the cochinita pibil tacos and they were super delicious. You also gotta try the homemade signature salsas he sends out! The restaurant ambiance is also very nice. We will definitely be back!!
google avatar

Jennifer M.

Yelp
Went with four stars because my husband didn't care for his Chile Verde. He said he preferred the big chicks of meat that he's had in the past at other Mexican food places, and this dish was small little piece (see photo). He said it seemed like just left over meat from something else. However, my son had a Burrito and I had Carnitas Tacos. Both were amazing!! so good! Also the Queso Fundido was on point. I highly recommend it. Service was fantastic and I can't wait to go back for some more Fundido (and Tacos), but mostly Fundido. YUM.
google avatar

Sue K.

Yelp
Today my husband and I stumbled across Don Pepe's restaurant in Oregon City as we were looking for some place to grab a quick late lunch. What an amazing place. The gentleman helping us took the time to help me to pick three tacos that he thought I would enjoy. He paired it with amazing salsas as well. The food was off the charts good. It's fresh and wonderful. If you are in any distance of Oregon City, this is the place to go for great Mexican food. We will be back!
google avatar

Lyn N.

Yelp
One thing that makes Don Pepe's stand out from other Mexican restaurants is their buffet of salsas we get with our chips. Pepe made like 6 different, new salsas just today and we were the second people to try them. He came to our table and scooped out another one with peanut that he just whipped up in the kitchen while we were trying the other ones. This place is so good, unique and personal. It's definitely in my top three favorite, go-to places to eat.
google avatar

Jani B.

Yelp
I wish I had taken a photo!!! What I loved: 1. I asked for salsas and they delivered SALSAS!!! Can I tell you how disappointing it is to get a burrito with two tiny salsas?? Am I alone in this ‍ 2. Delicious food, I mean serious flavor combinations. 3. They don't use rice as a cheap filler. For reals. I've never figured who actually likes rice burritos. 3. Legit solid Mexican food. Gringos beware

R D.

Yelp
Food was ehhh...burritos.... trader joes frozen taste better. margaritas were yucky syrup w/ no tequila taste. price was high for less than average food. kinda like amateur hour for a restaurant. lotsa people working there wandering around. tack on a credit card surcharge without notifying you. Find a good taco cart, youll be better off.
google avatar

Jeanette M.

Yelp
By far the best Mexican food ever! Also very clean! Mar is the most kindest, most attentive waitress. From the moment we called, she convinced us that the food was amazing and she was right, we do not regret coming here! We will definitely be back! I ordered the Chile verde & it was delicious! The meat itself would just melt in your mouth! This place felt like home! Customer service was beyond the greatest!!

Yelp
Fantástico!!! I am so thankful to have found this place to eat. My wife and I shared the steak fajitas and the camarones a al Diablo. Really great. Both were really good. It was a joy to get the salsa flute. They need a tray with names on it. I picked the Black Mambo! I always appreciate that the people who work there are the same people who own it and are invested in it. It makes a difference and for what it is worth i enjoyed meeting the name sake. My wife said here mango margarita was chunky. She was not a fan, but she said the flavor was really good. The chips were not my favorite but the salsa flute made up for it...Overall great experience.

Yelp
I moved to West Linn 3 years ago from Northern California, where there is some of the most authentic Mexican food. My family & I have tried a dozen+ Mexican restaurants in the area. I've literally thrown out some of the Mexican food that I've brought home. But, then I found Don Pepe's. Arturo, the owner, is fantastic, as is his daughter Carla. Great family run business that is more than happy to prepare off-menu meals. Arturo makes a variety of salsas. You'll only get the basic very mild salsa with your chips, but if you ask for spicy salsa Arturo's eyes will light up. Daily, he makes a variety of spicy salsa. Wonderful people & good food.
google avatar

Brittney Y.

Yelp
This place is amazing! A hidden Gem in downtown OC. The service and food are both outstanding. The most authentic and delicious Ceviche I have had in many years. The variety's of homemade salsas are so unique and tasty. The food is made with love and the family that runs the place are delightful. Great people, great food and a friendly environment. 10/10

Yelp
Oh wow! Really good Mexican food, a stand out for Oregon City. Renee's was still closed, so I was looking around and settled here, right by the base of the old bridge. They don't have much outdoor seating (safest), but had tables well apart and were trying really hard to avoid contact and aerosol transmission, which was nicely reassuring. I love the menu and the selection of salsas, which is one of the best I've found in Oregon. I ordered the Puerco al Chile Verde and it was reeeeeealy good! I ate too much and had to go bike the Tryon Creek trail to make up for gorging myself! The tortillas (harina, yes I'm a gringa I admit it) were nicely grilled and blistered, the refried beans thick and creamy, the rice.... rice. Oh, it was a wonderful and very meatful meal. My server suggested I try the Puerco Colorado next time. You betcha (sorry, been binge watching Fargo)! It's nice to have an alternative to Ranee's at last!

Leticia V.

Yelp
They have pretty tasty tacos. They did have a very long wait time but I didn't hold that against them because of stupid Rona! I got the shrimp taco, fish taco, vegetable taco, and i threw in a crunchy beef taco for fun. The salsas provided were sooooo good and honestly if I didnt have those bad boys I wouldn't have enjoyed these as much. The star of the show was the fish taco. The seasoned fish was cooked perfect and they didn't use a batter just freshly seared. I will definitely come back for those! Thank you so much for being open during this!! #quarantinelife2020
