Dong Phuong Bakery, a beloved New Orleans East spot since '82, serves legendary banh mi and sought-after king cakes that keep everyone coming back.
"Simply put, Dong Phuong’s famed king cakes reign supreme in New Orleans. The New Orleans East Vietnamese bakery sells its standard six flavors — cream cheese, pecan, cinnamon, strawberry, coconut, and almond creme — every day except Tuesdays for walk-in purchase from January 6 to March 3, 2025. This year, there’s even a new flavor addition — durian — which was first introduced for Lunar New Year in 2024. A few additional notes: There’s a limit of three walk-in cakes per customer, and they are generally sold out by noon. They are also available daily for walk-in pickups at a slew of local restaurants, bakeries, and cafes, listed here." - Beth D'Addono, Clair Lorell
"For years this New Orleans East Vietnamese bakery’s perfectly crisp on the outside, soft on the inside take on french bread has been the undisputed reigning champ of po’ boy loaves. Always worth the drive for its banh mi, the bakery also offers a sampling of Vietnamese sweets such as moon cakes, and in season, some of the most sought-after king cakes in town." - Eater Staff, Clair Lorell
"Opened by the Tran family in New Orleans East in 1982, Dong Phuong Restaurant and Bakery was named an America’s Classic in 2018. One of the city’s first Vietnamese restaurants, Dong Phuong is known as much for pho and banh mi sandwiches as for its crackling-crust pistolettes favored for po-boys at so many sandwich shops around the city. The bakery is also a popular favorite during carnival for king cakes." - Beth D'Addono
"This beloved Vietnamese restaurant and bakery in New Orleans East — opened in 1982 by the Tran family — gets pictured (and later name-dropped as a maybe too frequent date spot for Lin and Sonny). Dong Phuong is known for pho, banh mi, and supplying pistolettes for po’ boys at sandwich shops around the city, but perhaps most of all for its king cakes during Carnival." - Missy Frederick
"Opened by the Tran family in New Orleans East in 1982, Dong Phuong Restaurant and Bakery was one of New Orleans’s first Vietnamese restaurants, ushering in what is now a major part of the city’s cuisine identity. Dong Phuong is known as much for pho, banh mi sandwiches, and savory pastries as for its crackling-crust pistolettes favored for po’ boys at so many sandwich shops around the city. The bakery is also the city’s most popular favorite during carnival for king cakes." - Clair Lorell, Eater Staff
