A Guide to New Orleans’s James Beard Award-Winning Restaurants | Eater New Orleans

"Opened by the Tran family in New Orleans East in 1982, Dong Phuong Restaurant and Bakery was named an America’s Classic in 2018. One of the city’s first Vietnamese restaurants, Dong Phuong is known as much for pho and banh mi sandwiches as for its crackling-crust pistolettes favored for po-boys at so many sandwich shops around the city. The bakery is also a popular favorite during carnival for king cakes." - Beth D’Addono

The New Orleans Restaurants and Bars of HBO’s ‘Treme’ | Eater New Orleans

"This beloved Vietnamese restaurant and bakery in New Orleans East — opened in 1982 by the Tran family — gets pictured (and later name-dropped as a maybe too frequent date spot for Lin and Sonny). Dong Phuong is known for pho, banh mi, and supplying pistolettes for po’ boys at sandwich shops around the city, but perhaps most of all for its king cakes during Carnival." - Missy Frederick

Everytime I'm in the area I love to stop by and eat here. I love their vermicelli noodle dishes (specifically with grilled pork or korean ribs) and bun bo hue the most. Afterwards you can stop by their bakery for the best vietnamese bread and other goods.

Jesse Clymer

Google
Great vietnamese spot, fast service, great portions, and good pricing. Really large bowls of pho that tasted excellent with all the veggies needed for it. Really great drink selections, coffee was good, smoothies were excellent, and got a limeade that was incredible.

Google
Pho broth leans towards on the sweeter side, but the grilled pork is probably the best I had. They aren’t stingy with the portions, the price is reasonable for the amount of food you get.

Google
The BEST pho place ever. We go there weekly and their pho has been consistent every time. Love their milk teas & smoothies too! I recommend the Taro or Matcha Green Tea flavor with tapioca added. Edit: Know that they’re closed on Tuesdays*

One of my must stop ats when I come down to the city. The only issue is who closes a restaurant during the week and not open for dinner time? The first time we drove out there was on Thursday and Yelp said they were open until 5. But when we actually got there, the bakery was open but not the restaurant. We only wanted to eat at the restaurant. Prices are reasonable especially considering the portion size. I can NEVER finish the whole bowl of bbh ( bun bo que) they give you so many different cuts of meat and it's piled in. The broth is flavored so well you really dont need to add anything else in unless you like it spicier. The bbh here is my favorite in all the places that I have visited in various cities in the United States so I haven't even bothered to try any other dishes. But that should tell you something if I keep coming back for more every time I come to town.

Google
Must Try Viet Food! Anytime I'm in town I have to make a stop at Dong Phuong not just for the restaurant's amazing food but also the bakery. We ordered the pho bo vien and pho tai and it truly refreshes the soul and hits the spot. Unfortunately the bakery was closed after Mardi Gras but, if you have the chance don't sleep on their Banh mi (any option).

Google
Amazingly authentic Vietnamese food, loved the atmosphere and the people working there are very friendly.

Very understaff a bit slow , but overall food and everything was good.

Yelp
Got to try their king cake at a wedding and it is worth it. Stopped by the bakery too and tried their craw fish pastry, cream puffs, banh mi, and their mini tarts including pecan, egg custard and coconut. Craw fish pastry was so unique and had good kick. cream puffs were actually frozen? But I think that was not intentional. Banh mi with grilled pork was on point, nice layer of pâté. Mini tarts are all very good! Service was professional enough. You order and they bring out your sandwiches. Also got an iced coffee next door at the restaurant which hit the spot!

Yelp
So I've had their king cake to go before and damn was it good. So on this particular trip I wanted to come inside and get their baked goods in person. They have a lot to offer and we tried so many items including the banh mi. But I have to report back that even though many of the items were Ok, I'd stick to the pate chaud. Their traditional is delicious but their bbq pork pate chaud was over the top good!!! I wish I would have gotten more of these to go instead of sampling all the other things. I'll make this stop every time I'm driving through from now on!

Yelp
The drive here is worth it BUT make sure you call before because sometimes the google times are not correct. I normally get the bun bo hue (spicy beef soup) from the restaurant and it is soooo good and comforting. Very fragrant with lemongrass, brisket, tofu and pork hocks. Service is quick and you need to order everything at once. There are a good bit of tables but it is tight inside. Once you finish your meal, go next door to the bakery and get banh mi and meat pies.

Yelp
My favorite Vietnamese restaurant since I was a child. The food has always been consistently delicious. My favorites are Com Suong (grilled pork chop with rice) - add runny egg; and Bun Bo Hue. On the Bakery side: I like the Pate Chaud with bbq pork, and Coconut King Cake (during Mardi Gras)

Yelp
Took a side trip to Nola on my recent trip to Biloxi. It's a little over an hour drive and I wanted beignets. I've been to Don Phuong before a little over a year ago. I've tried their meat pies, banh mi, and a few other bakery goodies. The meat pies have a filling similar to a pate chaud except it's very peppery. The sharp taste is balanced out with the slight sweetness in the dough that it's baked in. It's good but I like their pate chaud better. Their banh mi is pretty good as well. On this trip, we wanted to try the restaurant side so we stopped in around lunch time. It was busyyy. We were still seated promptly. Took a while for someone to come by to take our order. Just pack your patience. The food came out fast fortunately. I ordered the bun bo xao and it was really good. The meat was plentiful and so tender. The nuoc mam was good and had chili in it already. I was missing the chopped peanuts though. That would've made it perfect. We knew we wouldn't make it early enough to snag a king cake but it was still disappointing to see the sold out sign. They are currently only doing walk ups. Honestly I've never had king cake, but I was definitely interested in trying one from a James Beard awarded bakery. The bakery did not have much offerings at 12:00 which was disappointing. This will definitely be a stop whenever I go to NOLA or even when I'm staying in Biloxi and craving good Viet food.

Yelp
I am torn between and 3 or 4 rating. We loved the food. I ordered special pho and my wife ordered "hủ tíu". My phở, I was not expecting much, turned out to be really good. The food was served very hot, which is needed for phở. Very quality, lots of meat, and have all the authentic ingredients. So for that reason overall rating is 4. Ambience, cleanliness, and server friendliness leave....definitely some opportunities there.

Yelp
James Beard award winning Vietnamese Bakery? Nice! Dong Phuong located in a suburb area a 15-20 minute drive east from the center of New Orleans. Knowing there is a Vietnamese American community out in the area, it was interesting for me to visit and support my kin. They have a large building and it would be hard to miss. There is a private parking lot for their bakery, restaurant and what looks like a distribution area to the back. The bakery is at the front closest to the street side. Service was extremely welcoming and nice. The ladies working here were all super sweet and friendly. My boyfriend and I ordered a few items to share. We got a #1 Banh Mi Thit Nguoi aka the French Cold Cuts Vietnamese sandwich, a Crawfish Pie, an Egg Custard Tart, and a Banh Trung Thu Thap Cam Mot Hot aka Mixed Nuts Mooncake with One Salted Egg. The banh mi bread was not as warm and soft as I experience back home in Orange County California. I suspect it's because they do not have as much constant foot traffic. The interior had a really gelatinous piece of cold cut I could have gone without. The crawfish pie was interesting to try, a kick to each bite. The mooncake is inferior with the filling really loose and the exterior hard and lacking the shine. The selection was also really minimal when we came on the actual Mid Autumn Festival day. The egg custard had a decent filling but the breading was hard and tough. I prefer a flakey tart. Interesting to try and I like how this Vietnamese bakery is attracting folks of all ethnic backgrounds here. I even hear they supply a lot of the sandwich bread for the po boy spots in town. I'm just personally not in a rush to come back since I am spoiled with a lot of Vietnamese options back home.

Yelp
Best pho in town! This will forever be my favorite location. It's spacious, quiet, always clean & the food is always so good, so fresh and amazing! The staff is friendly and I really enjoy the peace and quiet here. I come here to detach from devices & all that's going on to enjoy my food and experience

Yelp
While searching for somewhere to eat, an ad for Goldbelly came up showcasing Dong Phuong Bakery. They are a James Beard Award winning establishment for being an America's Classic establishment. There are two front doors. One on the far right leads to the deli where they have remade pastry, snacks, and order banh-mi to go. They sell fresh sandwich pate, banh-mi bread, steam buns, and so much more. The left door went to the restaurant. We were heading out of the city, so we didn't get a chance to try the foods available in the restaurant. We ordered the banh-mi's first. The bread is exceptional. I've eaten banh-mi's from coast to coast, nothing I've ever had will beat this bread. Why? It's well-balanced. What I mean by that is the top is slight flaky, while the inside is buttery and soft. It has a bounce after each bite and the bread is not dry like other's I've had. It's such a perfect vessel to hold all the veggies and meat without spilling over. We ate this in the car on our drive to Texas and it held together very well. I can see why they deliver their breads to their sandwich / po-boy businesses around the area. Their steam buns are amazing as well. The dough is pillowy, slightly sweetened, and holds its form. The bun is stuffed with a ground pork mixture and half of a hard boiled egg. So simple and well seasoned. The ratio of meat and dough is balanced. This is my comfort food and it mad me so happy to find this in a part of the country that I least expected. The service was quick and efficient. They allowed us to take our time to make our choices. There's other sweet pastries and snacks to choose from but it was too early to eat sweets. The next time I'm in NOLA, I will head here and eat to my heart's content.

Yelp
Tucked away on Mentaur Highway, Dong Phuong Bakery is a delightful surprise that beckons with the aroma of freshly baked goods. Their breads are nothing short of exceptional each bite a testament to their baking prowess. The baked macaroons and pastries are equally delicious, with flavors that dance on the palate, leaving you wanting more. The recent renovations have breathed new life into the dining experience. All of the staff are friendly and attentive to you while even remembering your name. The addition of pho and other savory Thai dishes has expanded the culinary horizon, offering a perfect blend of sweet and savory under one roof. The ambiance now matches the quality of the food, making it a complete dining delight. A visit to Dong Phuong is incomplete without indulging in their Seasonal Mardi Gras King Cake. It's not just a cake; it's an experience, rich in tradition and bursting with flavor. To say you've celebrated Mardi Gras without this king cake is to miss out on a slice of authentic festivity. I highly recommend - make the drive, take a seat, and savor the taste of Dong Phuong. It's a journey for your senses that promises to be as rewarding as it is delicious.

Yelp
Worth the wait! Came on a Sunday at 8:40am the weekend of Mardi Gras. Waited for ~45mins to get 3 king cakes (per person) at $30 each (including tax). They accept cash or card. I recommend the cream cheese, almond, and coconut flavors. The pecan flavor was a bit sweet for my liking. They sold out of the strawberry flavor so I didn't get to try it. The banh mi is excellent (#1 cold cuts) but a bit pricey at $6.50/sandwich. I came two days in a row for the banh mi! However, I did wait 30+ mins for the sandwich (after ordering) which was annoying considering it should take 2 mins to make...

Yelp
Delicious and affordable Vietnamese food, but quite far away from downtown, you would def need a car. Portion is huge! For soy milk, was expecting homemade, but it is canned drink. It tastes exactly like the glass bottle in Vietnam tho so I don't mind.
google avatar

Yelp
Oh my goodness!! Best Vietnamese I've had in New Orleans , hands down. Everything I had was excellent. The Bahn mi French cold cuts was completely on point. Bun bo hue was also a winner , I wasn't a fan of the tofu. This is classic Vietnamese. Only it's not too low brow. The spring rolls were excellent. They are worth going for by themselves. Service was also very good, the restaurant was very clean. You have to go next-door to the bakery to order the sandwich. You pay for it and sit outside and wait. Totally worth the wait.

Yelp
Everytime we come into New Orleans we have to stop by. We love this place they got some of the best Vietnamese food. I had the shaken beef and man was the beef juicy and tender with the perfect blend of sweet and savory. After eating I would recommend you step next door to the bakery and get you some dessert. Don't skip the banh chuoi and the pate chaud 10 out of 10! You won't be disappointed. Also it's the time for king cake and you gotta make sure you get one early before it's gone

Yelp
If you have never been to Dong Phuong's before, first let me urge you: don't miss out!!! This place has a delicious, fresh banh mi with fresh, delicious bread and a great variety of baked goods for the lowest prices you will see in this day and age. Let me also explain to you what to do when you get to this slice of heaven, my favorite sandwich shop. Go in the door on the right that says bakery. Go to the little subway sandwich looking station and tell them the number banh mi you want. I recommend the bbq chicken, vegetarian jambon, and grilled pork the most. The toppings it comes with are hoisin, mayo, cilantro, pickled carrots, cucumber, jalapenos. You can customize it; I recommend asking for extra hoisin. They will hand you a ticket and make your sandwich while you pick out what else you want. The charsiu steamed buns are to die for in my opinion. The other bao are also delicious. If you are highly sensitive to the flavors that packages leave on items, or just generally weird like me, you might not want to load up on the professionally packaged goods on the left on your first go. I got one of the beautiful flower cakes but it tasted like the plastic to me. It didn't taste like that to anyone else, because I'm just highly sensitive to plastic taste. There are plenty of desserts to choose from, including fresher made ones like jellies in the fridge or single cake slices. You can't really go wrong there. Then bring your ticket and desserts to the counter, tell them you want 2 of the charsiu steam buns as well, and they will ring you up. When your sandwich is ready they will call the number on the ticket and exchange the ticket for your sandwich. You can wait outside for this and then eat on their picnic tables. If you are looking for a kingcake, you better preorder!!! This is absolutely my favorite kingcake of all time. For cream cheese and filling lovers, this is the holy grail.

Yelp
In my opinion, this place is an all-time classic for authentic Vietnamese food! I dined in at Dong Phuong with my mother on a Sunday evening, and the service was nice & quick. We ordered two dishes. The first dish was a "Com Suong Nuong", which is a Grilled Pork Chop dish sided with rice, cucumbers, and picketed vegetables ($11.00). The second dish was a large "Hoành Thánh Mì Hoặc Súp", which is a bowl of egg noodle soup filled with wontons and pork ($17.00). For drinks, we got a Thai Tea drink with regular boba ($5.00) and an Avocado smoothie with extra lychee jelly ($5.00 + $1.00 = $6.00). For the grilled pork chop dish, it had so much flavor to it! The pork chop was charred to perfection. Not only that, but the portions were massive as well! For $11.00, this type of dish was really cheap. As for the egg noodle soup, the broth was good too and the portions were huge as well, but I personally liked the pork chop dish more because of the impact the charred flavor got on me. For the drinks, they were all tasty and price worthy in my opinion. As for the decorum, the place is clean, but still a bit dark and small. It's not like a trendy setting, but the service, cleanliness, and tastiness makes up for it. Although Dong Phuong is located in New Orleans East, a very dangerous area, I'd still say this restaurant is worth a try, especially for the Grilled Pork Chop dish!

Yelp
I've been going to the Dong Phoung bakery since I was a child. My family lived in BR but every time we went to NOLA, we just had to stop by for some french pastries and delicious banh mi. Now as an adult, I'm able to go to Dong Phoung myself, I also make sure to stop by even if it means driving through 50mins of traffic. It has never disappointed, the flavors are always so good. The banh mi here will always be my #1. The bread is the perfect amount of crunch, it has a satisfying sound when eating. I love the steamed bao, both the pork egg and char siu filling are tasty. The bao is nice and soft with a sweet flavor. The pate chaud and baked bao are also so good, especially when fresh. I love the texture of the baked bao. I haven't had their pastries often, so I don't have much to say about the ones that are displayed on the shelf. I have had the pandan honeycomb, yucca pie, and steamed banana cake. I was surprised to see the steamed banana cake but it was delicious and reminded me of my childhood when my grandmother would make me some. The honeycomb cake was also a familiar taste that had that chewy soft texture that it's known for. I think the only thing I've had that was a miss was a slice of jelly cake. I'm not sure if it's because I'm not the biggest pandan flavor person and I was also expecting it to taste like something else T_T And then lastly, I did choose to get my 2022 King Cake from Dong Phoung and it was just amazing. I usually don't like cream cheese icing but it was a good balance to the cake. I'm definitely going to get a king cake from them again in 2024. The customer service is immaculate, everyone is so kind. I'm happy that they are able to invest into their branding and upgrade with the bags and banh mi boxes. They have this cute imagery of a scooter with nola backgrounds like .. I love the culture that's being spotlighted.

Yelp
I visited this bakery based on Yelp reviews but was disappointed with the experience. The bread was stale, and there were numerous flies in the shop. While it might be considered decent for this area, in my opinion, it deserves only 2 star.

Yelp
*King Cake review* Y'all already know about the unicorn of king cakes, right? I call it that because it's so notoriously hard to get your hands on one of these does it even exist? It's really kind of ridiculous and annoying af. This year I went online to place an order to pick up in the store. I got on THE NIGHT online orders opened and guess what? Online orders for store pickup were all sold out FOR THE ENTIRE SEASON. In just a few hours every single slot for every single day of the season was filled. At this point I was just like "you know what? F it." With so many amazing king cakes to try I am not gonna stress about this one. Period. Well I guess it was written in the stars for me to finally try it because one day not too long after #unicorngate my boss brought the office two of them. So the icing is what everyone raves about the most. I already knew the cake layers would be soft and flaky because Dong Phong is a very popular bakery and they don't play around with their dough. The icing is good, and super buttery...but I mean, it's not earth shattering y'all. It's a lot of peoples favorite, but it isn't mine. Worth the caloric overload? No. Not for me. I suggest everyone try it for themselves, though. Just don't stress out trying to find one. It might happen to just land in your lap like it did mine.

Yelp
I've had countless banh mi in my lifetime and I can say with certainty that this was the best banh mi I ever had. We ordered number 1 and 9 and they were both mouth watering delicious. The cold cuts were delicate in texture and has the perfect amount of seasoning. Combined with pickled radish and carrot mixture and creamy aioli it was a perfect marriage of refreshing flavors and texture combination in hot NOLA weather. I'm just sad I only got to eat one. It's a bit out of the way from the party center of NOLA but it's definitely worth the 30min drive.

Yelp
A Vietnamese bakery. We happily stumbled across it on Christmas morning. They were packed with regulars. Having no idea what anything was a patient lady tried to explain the food! We ended up getting fabulous tasting meat pies... Chicken. Crawfish and vegetable. They heated them up for us. We got a bag of rolls that brought back memories of San Francisco breads!!! There is also a restaurant attached to the bakery.
google avatar

Yelp
Best bread in New Orleans! If you're like me and you like to make sandwiches and/or poboys at home you need Dong Phong bread. Located in Michoud this shop is worth the drive! very resonable prices. I always get six mini loafs for under $4, a great deal. They also have award winning King Cake, I personally like the cream cheese flavor but they have many others to try. Please note that there will be a long line for king cakes during Mardi Gras season so be prepared.

Yelp
We have eaten here several times. Have had several of their desserts. PlCe is very cool inside with those tall back chairs, dish tank & their own bakery! I cant remember the names of everything we have tried here. But we have NEVER been disappointed!! I needed to add: KING CAKE REVIEW! Their cream cheese was very good with a pleasantly surprising whipped topping rather than a heavy icing. Loved it! Then we had their Coconut Cream King Cake-was awesome!! SWEET! Nevertheless, enjoyed!

Yelp
Been coming since they opened in early 80's. They have kept the place phenomenally clean and updated every few years. The food takes me to classic New Orleans when. I was a kid getting two bahn mi for $1.25 and packed filled sandwiches. Had the pho and bulgogi rice plate. Two bahn mi to go for dinner later. Always worth the visit and taste-

Yelp
This place is both a restaurant on one side and a bakery on the other. My family and I sat down at the restaurant to place an order and while it was being prepared we walked over to the bakery to pick up some snacks for our road trip to Florida. We got a couple of the pate chauds, a baked bao, a crawfish pie, some banh mi, mayo and pate. The pate chaud is so good! It has more of a saucy filling which I've never had before. I wanna buy a half a dozen next time, it's that good. The meat pie and crawfish pie was good too. The lack of stars is due to the flies flying around the banh mi making station. When my mom mentioned it to them they pretended like they didn't see them. Then when my partner bit into his grilled pork banh mi when we got to Florida, he found a piece of steel wool inside. I enjoyed my cold cut combo banh mi. For the restaurant part, it's Vietnamese food but it doesn't have the taste that I am accustomed too coming from California. The taste is not bad but also not that good for wanting me to return. Portion is big. I'd stick with the bakery side and just get the pate chauds.

Yelp
After driving through New Orleans, we realized we had to get some Vietnamese food and that's when we stumbled upon Dong Phoung and I'm really glad we did! When you walk in, it's a very small bakery/deli but they have very nice outdoor seating to accommodate. Even though I've had plenty of banh mi before, this was one of the best I have ever had! Would definitely recommend stopping by if you're ever in the area and make sure to take home some desserts or homemade pate!

p p.

Yelp
Purchased hoagie variety pack through Goldbelly as gift. Recipient opened package upon arrival immediately and noted that deli meat had patches of brown discoloration and was very dry as can be seen in pictures. Goldbelly confirmed with vendor that deli meat was safe to consume. Do not purchase from Goldbelly as they do not assume any responsibility for vendors and products. If recipient did not check product, adverse health affects could result from eating spoiled food. Google pictures of Vietnamese deli meat, no brown discoloration noted.

Yelp
Was recommended by some foodies. Super happy to have made it before close. They really say don't let the looks fool you. It's so true. Looks normal on the outside but addicting on the inside. Meat pies 5/5 Delicious. Outside buttery and crispy. The inside filling was delicious. Pate chaud 5/5 Was equally tasty as the meat pies. They were the ones I'm used to. These were like cut up an filled with sauce and meat versus the ground meats we normally have. I quite enjoyed this.

Yelp
Went for the Mardi Gras King cake; it has won a James Beard award (yes! The King cake!). Known for long lines and selling out fast. We made it on a Friday at 1030am and walk right up; bought a Cinnamon and one Cream Cheese. Our Cajun family in Lake Arthur LA ALL said it was the best King cake ever! Super high praise from actual Cajuns! I have to tell you the cake is amazing; real frosting, flaky soft cake and great flavors! If you order online, do so to save wait times. We will be getting them next year again as we head to our family and Mardi Gras in Southern Louisiana.

Yelp
Need an excuse to drive to the East and risk getting murdered a lil indulgence? Then look no further. The king cake is absolute perfection. Layered, Flaky, melt in your mouth, cake and a not overly sweet, almost buttery icing. Know someone who says Dong Phuongs "isnt the best" or "isn't worth the wait"? Kindly slap that person on the back of their head and never talk to them again due to their crap taste, and enjoy this wonderful delight. I live in Denver now, and wvery year I still talk some pour soul into waiting in line for me, so I can get my fix. Definitely worth getting someone else to risk their life out on chef menteur, and imo, worth risking your own.

Yelp
I love this bakery and sandwich shop- Yes I ordered my first King Cake of the season from here- (I was online at midnight on 1/1/23 to get it because all pick up orders for January and February will sell out in a day or two) But I love all the moon cakes, coconut pies, mixed nuts mochi, puddings (in fridge on wall), crawfish pies, etc And don't leave without a Bahn Mi (sandwich with any filling you want)
google avatar

Sarah E.

Yelp
Got in line at 7:45am & was out in less than an hour for king cake & pastries. Everything I ate was absolutely fabulous! 14/10 will be returning!
google avatar

Jenny L.

Yelp
I love their grilled pork with rice but today I tried the banh mi. VERY GOOD. I have never had a dish from Dong Phuong I did not enjoy!
google avatar

Isabella M.

Yelp
I didn't dine in but the food and bakery items were great. Favorites are the pork Vietnamese poboy with all the fixings like pickled julienne carrots, cucumber and fresh jalapeños, the grilled shrimp with vermicelli and the cinnamon rolls (not overly sweet).
google avatar

Holly W.

Yelp
Incredible authentic very fresh Vietnamese banh mi, steamed buns, pastries, baguettes, and other desserts. 14 types of banh mi including vegetarian options. Family owned forever by very nice people. Next door is a sit down restaurant but we always get them to go and eat in shade on picnic table. Treat yourself to a fantastic breakfast or lunch banh mi. They also make a French style king cake during Carnival season and there's a line out the door for that. Very popular.

Yelp
I stopped here on the way home from New Orleans, only 2 miles off I-10, so not really out of the way. We have a long drive, so I selected a steamed char sui bun, Pate Chaud, meat pie, Crawfish pie, coconut macaroons, mochi, and a pineapple bar. Omg, the Crawfish pie! It had so much filling, Crawfish, bamboo shoots, scallions, and seasonings I'm not sure of, but it was very spicy and delicious! I'm trying to find a recipe for it in my Vietnamese cooking group, because Google turned up nothing. The Pate Chaud was delicious too, but not as much filling as I wanted. The coconut macaroons were amazing, and surprisingly made without sweetened condensed milk, but you would never know that except for the ingredient list. The pineapple bar was not too sweet, as it looked, perfect for me. The mochi were delicious, with the all familiar chew. Have two more pies to sample, but I have no doubt they will be delicious too!

Yelp
The best pho you could've ever dreamed of. I live in Sacramento Ca. South sac, SF and San Jose all Have some of the best pho in North America. This place still has a place in my stomach as the best in the world. I love it.

Yelp
Where I live the Vietnamese options are lacking, so I had to check what NoLa has to offer. I found this bakery had excellent reviews and it was somewhat on my way out of town, so I did a stop. The location is interesting, as it seems a bit remote at first, and all of a sudden you see a couple stripmalls full of Vietnamese businesses. This place has 2 sides, one is the bakery where you can order banh mi, and the other the restaurant where I had to go get the coffee I wanted. They have a few different breads and pastries, as well as bagged baguettes for banh mi if you just want the bread. I ordered the number 1 banh mi, the bread was fresh and crispy outside, and it was very well loaded with cold cuts and veggies, but could have used more pate and seasoning. Also took some pate chaud and a crawfish pie for later, and those were delish. The coffee was precisely what I was craving, very strong and delicious. Not the best banh mi I've had, but a very good one nonetheless, definitely worth stopping by.

Yelp
This is the BEST Vietnamese bakery/restaurant in New Orleans!! We've only ever tried the items at the bakery side of Dong Phuong before, but we had time to go try the restaurant side this time too! On the bakery side, they have phenomenal pastries and treats! This time, we only got their coconut macaroons, chocolate chip cookies, eclairs, and crawfish pies. Their crawfish pies are to DIE for!! They have the NOLA spices and seasonings with a slightly Asian twist (bamboo shoots in the filling). The outer pie crust is a bit sweet and perfect. I'm telling you, if Dong Phoung was closer to my house, I would eat it every single day!! Just as a side note: I do think their king cakes are good, but I think they're overhyped. I'm not about to line-up outside the bakery at 8am to get a king cake during Mardi Gras season! Hahaha In the restaurant, we got a "round of eye" pho ($11) with thinly sliced rare beef. I swear their pho is the best pho I've had in NOLA. The broth is so flavorful that I don't need to add any Hoisin sauce at all! (At other places, I'm emptying a quarter of the bottle into my soup! Haha) We also ordered their specialty soup ($13) with egg noodles in pork broth. It had seafood and pork toppings. They do not skimp here at all. Tons of soup, tons of noodles, tons of meats. Of course, they give you plenty of bean sprouts, cilantro, and Thai basil to add in too. You get value for your money for sure, and you may not even be able to finish the whole thing! The portion is HUGE. This may be the only Vietnamese joint I visit in New Orleans!

Yelp
I tried twice and two different flavors. This style of King cake isn't for me. The icing is good but to rich. The actual cake is delicious and moist. Baked very well but that icing is about a inch think on the original flavored king cake. Today I brought the coconut flavored king-cake and while the filling and cake was delicious, the icing (while not as thick as the original) was overpowering the taste of the cake. While I'm glad I tasted it and gave it a second shot this is one that I think is an acquired taste. It wasn't my favorite but wasn't totally disgusting. I personally won't be purchasing this again but if a slice was offered at an event etc I would eat around the icing.

Yelp
Up until today, I have only been the the bakery side of Dong Phuong. And it has been a staple for me since I moved out here in the middle of Covid. The Banh Mi, Steamed Buns, and Pate So are my absolute favorites and I have been known to buy enough to last me days! Today I decided to give the restaurant a try. The restaurant is in the same building as the bakery and they're separated only by a wall. The bakery opens at 8am on weekends while the restaurant opens an hour later at 9am. The restaurant definitely had a Vietnamese restaurant vibe with the decorations and the music playing on a large tv. The space was fairly decent and they could easily sit a few parties at one time. I ordered the Hoanh Thanh (won ton) soup. It was quite good with plenty of dumplings, some seafood, and some meat. The brother flavor was quite good and only added a little bit of Hoison sauce for flavor. We also got the egg rolls which were $5 for 4, they were smaller than expected but for the price it seems reasonable. The only vegetarian options they had were the bun dishes, but those were also quite yummy and the portions were really nice sized! The service was okay. The food came out very quickly and the order was taken right away. The server was a little distracted and only came over whenever we called for him.

Yelp
Solid Vietnamese food that would probably get 5 in another city but imo is a little pricey in comparison to it's vast ocean of competitors in NOLA w no discernible difference in dishes or quality. The service is decent and the interior is maybe a touch more fancy than most of the aforementioned competitors.

Yelp
Amazing!! A little far from New Orleans, but it was worth it. They also have a good restaurant next door. Big portions. Definitely, will comeback.

Yelp
This review is solely for the king cake. This is an award winning cake and I have heard about it for a while. Highly recommend ordering ahead each year, I came when the season just started at about 11am and they were almost sold out of cinnamon king cakes and completely out of filled king cakes for walk ups. The bread on this cake was so soft and the best part. I was not a fan of the icing. It's more cream cheese like so if you like that type of icing this is the one for you. Overall it was a good king cake and the walk up service was fast and easy.

Yelp
Banh mis were good. Lots of baked goods and sweet treats to choose from. We were hoping to dine-in for pho, but it seemed that only the bakery was open for business. The neighborhood is a bit sketchy. There was a homeless woman hanging out in the parking lot panhandling. There was a small outside seating area where we ate our sandwiches and dessert. Not a scenic vibe, but we had driven a long way and did not want to eat in our car.

Yelp
Came for the bakery, but it was closed for the week after Mardi Gras. Ate at the restaurant: Pork and shrimp spring rolls - excellent Pho- Ordered brisket combo pho. Had them add vegetables to it also. The regular sized pho portion was huge. Loved that they gave lots of basil, sprouts, peppers, and cilantro for the pho. Very tasty. It was a rainy day and the soup was what I needed. Good price, good service, tables were bussed promptly .

Yelp
Love Dong Phuong! There are so many great things to try and eat at this bakery. They have absolutely one of the best king cakes and I really enjoyed the cream cheese filling one. Be sure to either pre-order or come early in the morning to get them since they run out quite fast. In addition to King Cakes, I also highly recommend their Banh Mi sandwiches. The Banh Mi sandwiches are super affordable (the vegetarian one start's at $4.50) and super filling while also freshly made. There are also tons of different pastries and baked goods that you can try here which I highly recommend if you are out in New Orleans East.
