In addition to the tables inside, they have a nice parklet setup outside. It was a bit stuffy inside on a warm evening, so we requested outdoors, and they were gracious about letting us change tables when the wind kept blowing an adjacent table's cigarette smoke straight at us.
Wines are cheap, and they have so many esoteric wines that we had to look up almost everything on the list. We ended up with a bottle of Maixei, which is a producer in Liguria. It went well with the pastas, but we really went in pretty clueless with their wine list.
Our focus was pastas, in particular, Calabrian style pastas. They also have proteins, but we skipped those in favor of carbs.
- Polpeti di cicoria: fried chicory balls with a chickpea purée. Since we were getting 3 pastas (to the horror of the server), he suggested a lighter starter, but I would have preferred something more interesting like the caciocavollo alla piastra (a grilled Calabrian cheese).
- Spaghetti Neri de Cetera: squid ink spaghetti with anchovy, olive, capers - great texture, definitely strong on the seafood flavor
- Maccheroni all'uso di Crotone: with sausage tomato sauce - our favorite - a meaty pork sugo made lighter with the fresh tomato acid and onions
- Stroncatura della Variente Calabra: Calabrian pasta with sausage, tomato, pesto. I'm not usually a wheat pasta fan, but since this is a special pasta from the region, we decided to try it. The texture was definitely a wheat based one, but the flavors were good overall
Pastas came in at €10-12 each, and portions were generous. We took the metro there but had to walk back to work off all of the heaviness from dinner! Dongio was a nice casual place to try Calabrian dishes.
