The 14 Best Restaurants in Juneau, Alaska | Eater

"Donna’s is that type of down-home diner where there’s breakfast all day, the steak comes chicken-fried, and the pie case is always full. Air travel in Southeast Alaska is always an adventure; its location near the airport makes it a great place to hang out if you happen to be waiting on a weathered-out flight. Donna’s Ice Cream is a worthy spot next door." - Julia O'Malley

Google
Food was absolutely delicious, and super fast service.

Shane Edelkind

Google
Friendly…prompt service. Waitress present , without “hovering “. Food was delivered quickly and accurately. Huge portions were nice after an exhausting day of traveling. Food was great! I especially liked the Veggie sandwich. Amazing choice of veggies and cheeses. Fantastic flavor. The French dip sandwich and fettuccine Alfredo were hits with my family.

Google
Quick work trip to Alaska. Donna’s was walkable from our hotel! Very nice staff and large delicious portions!

Google
We thought this was just ok. The food wasn’t anything to rave about, just normal diner food. It also took a really long time to get the food…probably 45-60 mins. Staff was nice, but wouldn’t go back.

Spent a week in Juneau and ate here once. Had the country-fried steak and it was excellent. I almost left because I waited over 10 minutes to get someone to acknowledge me, they just kept looking at me and not coming over. When someone finally did he was friendly and attentive and I did enjoy the food so it was all good. I’d have gone back during the week but the beginning steered me away because I don’t like wasting time sitting around eating when I’m on vacation, better things to do. However I would eat there again if I’m back in town and the food I had combined with the food I saw others eating looked really good…

Google
It’s an old time diner with good food. Breakfast is served all day. Milkshakes, real ice cream sundaes and, pies offered along side burgers and meals. I had the pot roast special and the chicken and dumplings soup special. Both were hearty and delicious. My husband chose breakfast both times quite happily.

Google
Wow...Not what I expected. Home cooking in huge quantities. I can eat a lot, but I wasn't up to the challenge they presented. Food was tasty, service was friendly and on time, and did I say way too much food? We were tourists, but if we ever go back, my wife and I will order for one with an extra plate. Give them a go.

Google
Nice place. 5 mins from the airport. Had a breakfast. Was good and coffee is not too bad.

Yelp
Fast friendly service. Good food! With a local chill atmosphere. Recommend this place!

Yelp
Food was bland and pretty expensive for what we got. We had the cheeseburger and fries, kids spaghetti, and kids fish and chips. Turned out to be just about $70

Yelp
Consistently inconsistent. I really want to like Donna's. Ordered two breakfast sandwiches today. Both were obscenely greasy. I get that back and sausage are greasy but it should be so greasy it soaks completely through an English muffin. That's just poor cooking technique and letting the stuff stew in grease on the griddle. Extra crispy hash brown were also fairly soggy. I watched a lady order Eggs Benedict and the waiter asked her how she'd like there's cooked. She said however they come and he said, "Ok. Over medium." Staff seems to be untrained whether the kitchen or wait staff. Unfortunately this is probably as good as it gets in the valley. You're better off just biting the bullet and driving downtown to Sandpiper or The Rookery.

Yelp
We stopped in for a meal as we were in the area. Pretty spot on as to what I expected. The portions were large and the food did the job. Fries were delicious. Burgers were fine. Our server was friendly and helped us out.

Yelp
Good place to grab a bite to eat if you are close to the Juneau airport as it's the only restaurant you can walk to from the airport. We came in with a party of 5 and were seated immediately. The waitress was awesome and she did a great job. I got the Donnas special. It was pretty good over all. I ordered my eggs over medium but they were still a little runny. They were quick to fill up out and waters and the food was decent. I might come back next time I am in town.

Yelp
Donna's is one of the few breakfast options if you're near the airport. There was nothing to complain about - the service was good and food was what you'd expect from about any diner. I didn't get anything worth raving about (basic breakfast plate) but it was good and cooked the way I ordered. It's not a place I'd drive out of my way for but if you're hungry, it'll do.

Yelp
Classic diner food. Big portions but nothing special. I went around 7am and it was pleasant and quiet. Attentive service-- my coffee stayed full.

Yelp
Food always hits the spot! Great service homemade food and a very homey ambience. Check it out you'll love it.

Yelp
Service was a bit lacking this time around. One doesn't expect too much in the way of service at establishments like this but they seemed more than well-staffed. Just seemed to drop the ball a bit. I'll be back nonetheless to try again. The BLT was your standard sandwich. Not great, not bad.

Yelp
I Had an extra long layover and this reataurant came up on Apple Maps, it was 10:30 so i thought breakfast sounded good. i ordered the Denver Omelet. it looked great when it arrived, very healthy portions was the first thing i noticed. They had cholula sauce as well as grape jelly which was a bog plus in my book. The hash browns were good as was the wheat toast. The Omelet? meh. no so much. i should have asked for something other than the American cheese which came in it. The Omelet was quite bland. it could use something to improve the flavoring. Otherwise the restaurant had a good homestyle fee to it and the service was great, young man with a beard knows how to be a server. goo job!

Yelp
Greasy spoon, big portions, and great staff!! Donna's restaurant is a must stop for breakfast or anytime food. Donna's restaurant has a full menu from burgers two salads all the way to breakfast all day. My favorite is the Donna special : on a huge plate you get three eggs, hashbrowns, six strips of bacon, and a biscuit full of amazing gravy. On the side, I would always get a single blueberry pancake. Another popular option is there a chicken fried steak! The portions are huge and for the price you will not go home hungry. Bottomless coffee is a must with hot coffee ready as they round the tables. You're cup will never be half empty. They are also known for their desserts. They have a $10 piece of chocolate cake that is worth every penny there a secret must be something more than baked with love:) Juneau Alaska is small but this is a great place to go if you have time before your plane leaves for a great place to go right when you land! Since it is 30 seconds away from the airport!

Yelp
Geeze, this is a hard one. I've been eating at Donna's for the least 20+ years, and they were always by goto "diner" restaurant while working in Juneau, but my last three visits were so disappointing that I can't see ever going back or recommending anyone I know to eat there either. Instead of homemade chicken fried steak, it was obviously from a package. Gravy merely resembled a gelatinous mixure of flour and water. Hashbrowns were crispy and nice, so that was a plus. Toast was floppy and hardly had any butter, but the waitstaff was amazing and super attentive during every visit. Plus, of the last three times I went, there was a gal sitting at a table on her laptop who was either one of the owners or a daughter of the owner. She was absolutely a terrible representative of that business. She sat there with a waitress and talked bad about employees, was super gregarious/loud, cussed the whole time with children around, all the while talking about how amazing she was for that business.

Yelp
Absolutely one of the best breakfast omelets anywhere! Excellent service, and the food is generously portioned. The place has that great old town diner ambiance that makes you want to stay for another cup of coffee.

Edward B.

Yelp
Best diner in Juneau, hands down!!! Great for breakfast or dinner or a combination of both.

Wen T.

Yelp
We have been good patrons of Donna's and the service and the following response of the "manager" today were completely rude and disrespectful. The waitress Christina was absolutely rude the entire time we were in the restaurant speaking in a loud rude tone, tossing the ticket over my shoulder onto the table two times instead of handing to me. It was so completely rude and disrespectful we asked to speak to a manger whose response was "there's nothing I can do and I will talk to her", completely incapable of talking to customers. If there is nothing a manager can do about a service being rude and yelling at customers what is her purpose there. While we were talking g to the manager the server Christina kept coming to the register and yelling over the manager showing the complete lack of respect for customer and manage and the lack of capability of the manager. The manager stated she was in the back and didn't hear anything which is completely irrelevant to how the server treated faithful customers. The manager was in the back room with the door closed. There was no apology, nothing to set this unprofessional disrespectful encounter right.

Yelp
If you are looking for a classic diner with all of the usual suspects then this is it. The place was packed with people but the service was amazing. The food came fast and was exactly what you would expect. Unfortunately the food is your classic can or box food. Canned gravy with biscuits that are from a box powder. Chicken fried steak from a frozen box.
google avatar

Nativeinak H.

Yelp
I see the cook handing something over to people that are homeless The owner should do a ua and why is he using slippers and not shoes the food greasy the service took forever because the cook ran some

Yelp
I've gone to Donna's since I was little. Donna's Breakfast is Always delicious! Side of corned beef hash! Even better! The burger & fries are really good too. I don't recommend the waffles but that is the only thing I've gotten in all these years that I didn't like. I expected fresh strawberries but they were not.

Mark O.

Yelp
Always great service from a smiling face. Food was very good! One of my go too in Juneau!
google avatar

Aaron D.

Yelp
Let's be honest you're lucky this place is open. It's he food isn't good - it's adequate. The venue is vintage. The service is good enough. Anywhere else you'd never go here. But in Juneau it's a decent option to fill your belly and pass time as you're passing through.

Gavin M.

Yelp
The whole place is just a whole vibe but the uncooked food is getting on my nerves because their food is very expensive Service is amazing though servers are very persistent.
google avatar

Steve B.

Yelp
Good breakfast. Blitz was great. French toast is wonderful and service was quick. Great for sit down breakfast.

Yelp
If you are looking for a milkshake this is the place to go! We originally headed to Auke Bay for a milkshake only to find that the shack down there doesn't make them anymore so went searching for another place for a milkshake and found Donna's. Service was A+ our waitress was awesome and they are very accommodating to young children dining in. Each of us ordered burgers and fries of different varieties and everything was prepared perfectly. The location is casual and has an ice cream shop next door. If you aren't in the mood for a shake or ice cream you can get fresh pie as well. I would definitely recommend if you are looking for American cuisine.

Scott M.

Yelp
My wife and I went to Donna's on our first night of a week long vacation, and came back three more times! The food was incredibly good, the service was friendly and prompt, and the ambiance reminded us of an old time family restaurant. I would give this a 6 out of 5 rating if I could!

S J.

Yelp
Pretty good breakfast food. Three stars because the food is a little overpriced and the staff are not very friendly.
google avatar

Chet B.

Yelp
Food was good but service was decent. Has that mom and pop restaurant type of feel with a bit of a Denny's feel as well but better food! Due to this being in Alaska, it is a bit more on the price, but we'll worth it! With in walking distance to the airport and hotels in the area. Would definitely go back again! No alcohol service here! The staff is friendly and knowledgeable of what they have.
google avatar

Leslie B.

Yelp
Fast service, personable waitress and excellent food. Ate breakfast here every day of our time in Juneau.
google avatar

Sterling C.

Yelp
This place has a favorable local reputation so I decided to give it a try for breakfast. Very limited options for pescatarians or vegetarians- vegans need not apply. The closest thing to a vegetable is either peppers in an omelette or hash browns. I ended up settling on two eggs over easy with hash browns and toast. Not bad, but I paid extra for sourdough toast and they brought it burned. Rituals English Breakfast is not the worst for tea (beats Lipton), and on the plus side they do offer honey.
google avatar

Adeline V.

Yelp
It's a greasy greasy spoon kinda place. I prefer other places for just about anything they offer. In Juneau the options are limited. The location is convenient to the airport and their pricing is average. I would be here for breakfast before another nearby place, however I prefer Mi Casa at the Travelodge overall, they have a higher quality of food there. I've never had anything at Donna's that impressed me aside from the chocolate brownie.
google avatar

Eric A.

Yelp
Very pleasant service. Prices are the Alaska standard. Had breakfast and a lunch there. Both were standard diner fare.
google avatar

Darrell H.

Yelp
4 of 5 and not 5 of 5 stars because the food is not special in any way. Although the food is basic Americana (bacon n eggs), that is what people come here for and they are reliable at delivering that. 4 of 5 is very good to me. The service is good and the atmosphere is pleasant. In addition to a meal you can get coffee, ice cream and waffles.
google avatar

Mark B.

Yelp
Enjoyed every aspect of this dinner, great FOH, waitstaff- that garlic bread really is as good as it looks. We had a second order. I had the chicken parm, delicious. Cool room- I was easily the oldest person in the room by a couple decades. Whatever!

Yelp
We just got off the plane in our way to spend a week in Alaska. Donna's is a comfy casual diner atmosphere where you can get real food. Nothing fancy here just good down to earth good food. You can get omelets or French toast or burgers or lots of other goodies. The burger was juicy and the French fries were delicious. I wanted breakfast so I got a ham and cheese omelet with super crispy hash browns. We left really early from California and are so excited to be in Alaska with cooler weather. Donna's is a nice treat since we were starving from our flights. Expect to get a homey atmosphere and good food at Donna's.

Daniel H.

Yelp
Few choices for breakfast in Juneau but this one is worth a try, chicken, fried steak is outstanding, eggs Benedict is pretty good, and Donna's favorite omelette are worth ordering, good service, good coffee, priced at Juneau rates, but to go to breakfast place in Juneau for locals, I live in Juneau and will treat myself to Donna's once a month

Yelp
Great local restaurant! Food was great think of diner style. Close to the airport and great service.
google avatar

Edie G.

Yelp
Your basic breakfast diner, no frills, just an honest to goodness delicious breakfast. A great ma and pop local place.
google avatar

Yelp
Massive portions on the omelet. French toast was nice and crispy. Service was quick and friendly.

Yelp
Donna's may not look like much from the outside, but is a feel good cozy diner setting. This place is one of my dad's friend's favorites and thus came here for lunch today. My dad's friend and I got the BLT's with onion rings ($12.95 + $2.00 upcharge for onion rings). Forgot to ask for no mayo, but had plenty of bacon nonetheless. Onion rings were good, but I feel that the fries portion was a better serving. Perfect size and no leftovers. My dad got the single biscuits and gravy (2 biscuits) with a large pile of hashbrowns for $9.95. A little pricey, but other portions were quite large and looked like there were several satisfied customers. Food came out quickly and the staff was friendly. Specials for today were eggs benedict ($12.95), reindeer sausage biscuits and gravy with eggs and hashbrowns (16.95), and a chocolate waffle for $8. Would like to come back to try their milkshakes
google avatar

Yelp
Easy walk from the airport. Food was out very quick! Had the chicken fried steak with scrambled eggs hash browns and toast. Hit the spot. Very good, "home-cooked", "comfort food" meal. Coffee was good as well. Finished it off with the waitress bringing by a warm gingersnap cookie. Will definitely be back! Service was outstanding.
google avatar

Mark S.

Yelp
Food prices in Alaska always give me a bit of sticker shock, so just accept that they are what they are and forget that you're paying $20 for breakfast. This place was packed on Saturday morning by locals and visitors, and the quality of the food is the reason. I had the cinnamon french toast with eggs and bacon. Fantastic meal and great service.
google avatar

Yelp
Went in for Breakfast on a late Friday morning. Breakfast served all day or for as ling as they are open. Visited during winter hours so times change for summer/winter time frames. Food was great. Reminded me of the 80's ole truck stops we would stop at on our family's cross country trips. Wonderful customer service and very friendly people. Food portions are large and the coffee was never empty. Really enjoyed this restaurant.
google avatar

Lisa M.

Yelp
Popular local restaurant, especially on weekends. Large servings so come hungry. The chicken fried steak, which comes in breakfast or dinner versions, is the dish they are best known for, but there are a variety of burgers and other options.

Shanti C.

Yelp
Great experience! A very short walk from Juneau Airport (5 min). Super fast food, decent service, really tasty, big portions. We had the #7 Cinnamon French Toast combo and 2 egg combo with a side of biscuits and gravy. So delicious, nothing was left!
google avatar

Dennis S.

Yelp
Considering there is very limited options here in Juneau for breakfast this is by far the most consistent prices are fair, portions are great lots of food. Staff is very professional and helpful.

Thomas L.

Yelp
Food quantity was abundant. Service was fast and efficient. Food was standard fair prepared without flaws. Place was very busy but we still got through fast and friendly local ambience. Efficient

Saysha B.

Yelp
Delicious -- especially after a long beautiful hike; whole family loved all their burgers and hot sandwiches as well as the fries, onion rings, side salad, and brownie sundae. Yum!
google avatar

Yelp
Blue-chip diner in SE AK THE ROSES: Let's face it; Alaska is the place for Manly Men, and Donna's is the place where Manly Men eat. Big portions, simple fare, and warm service. It's definitely a 'Carhartt-and-trucker-cap' kind of place. THE THORNS: A bit pricey for what you're getting, but hey, I'm from the Lower 48; I'm just starting to realize everything is more expensive here. THE VERDICT: For good, simple, stick-to-your-ribs fare, Donna's is the place to go. Recommend.

Yelp
We stopped for lunch after walking to Mendenhall Glacier and Nugget Falls. The halibut sandwich was really good. I will definitely visit again if I can make it back to Juneau.
