Don't Tell Dad brings a twinkling atmosphere to Queen's Park - Review - London - The Infatuation

"A decent neighbourhood restaurant will have you wondering what life would be like around those bits. A very nice one will have you scrolling Rightmove on the train home. Don’t Tell Dad is the latter. With a picturesque setting on Lonsdale Road in Queen’s Park and a slick terracotta aesthetic, this bakery-cum-restaurant could easily fit into Soho. Instead, retired NW6 locals are splitting modern European plates and warm madeleines by 6:30pm, while frilly sock girlies clink grüner veltliner over rich oxtail crumpets. Said crumpet is a great way to kick things off—whether you’re pitching up at the counter with a brown butter hazelnut Old Fashioned, or cramming the kids into a booth. Forget dummies, use a cheddar and truffle beignet instead. photo credit: Don't Tell Dad photo credit: Don't Tell Dad photo credit: Don't Tell Dad Pause Unmute The menu is an unchallenging and approachable mixture of European-British things, and you should look out for dishes that have a baking element in them. A pungent crab tart with perfect, snapping pastry is superb. Real Hollywood handshake stuff. There’s some good bistro-ish cooking too, and we can’t remember the last time we had guinea fowl this tender. Some crowds in a restaurant are trendy, others are more serious. Here, everyone seems happy. Big hugs and warm smiles are a standard at every table. Maybe that isn’t just down to Don’t Tell Dad. Either way, a plate of piping hot madeleines with clotted cream certainly doesn’t hurt. Food Rundown Oxtail Crumpet, Dripping Crumb Is a crumpet still a crumpet if it doesn’t have any holes? An enormous question for modern times. Regardless, this crumpet-muffin with a generous handful of rich, shredded oxtail on top is very enjoyable. photo credit: Jake Missing Crab Tart, Crab Oil Mayonnaise, Watercress A slice of crab tart that’s so crabby it feels like the entire essence of crabbiness has been distilled and formed onto a brilliant, crumbly shortcrust pastry base. It’s served with a few sprigs of watercress and a dollop of (crab) mayonnaise for good measure. photo credit: Jake Missing Guinea Fowl, Celeriac, Chanterelles, Cavolo Nero There’s plenty of comfort on Don’t Tell Dad’s menu, but there’s some serious cooking too. This guinea fowl is evidence of that. There’s tender dark meat, juicy white meat and pool of a loose and sweet celeriac pureé. The just-cooked cavolo brings it all together. photo credit: Jake Missing Madeleines, Sour Cherries, Clotted Cream Patience is a virtue. Frankly, we’d wait all week for these madeleines if that’s what it took. Crisp on the edges, steaming hot, and with a lovely combination of dark cherries and clotted cream. photo credit: Jake Missing" - Jake Missing

We visited on a Sunday, and there was a very long queue for the pastries. The wait was worth it though. We tried a few pastries, and they were absolutely delicious with amazing flavours and just the right amount of sweetness. The texture was perfect too — soft and fresh. There’s also a dining area with a nice ambiance, though the prices are on the higher side.

Very nice service, decor and vibes. Food was good, but wouldn’t say it a top tier London restaurant. Starters and desserts were better than the mains. Best dishes: sourdough & butter, oxtail crumpet, braised pork, almond tart. All the mains were good but nothing particularly stood out. Overall worth a try for a nice evening out but wouldn’t rush to go back. Daytime bakery is also good. Personal faves were the hazelnut brown butter croissant and pear and tonka sfogliatella.

An embarrassingly late review, but we visited Don’t Tell Dad, around the soft launch at the beginning of the year. The restaurant has a wonderful atmosphere, and the food is beautifully presented and delicious. I recall the service not being quite up to par, as no one came to ask us how our meal was. Hopefully this has been resolved. The food is quite expensive, so whilst I would recommend, I would also preface that you should go expecting to leave with a high bill. Pastries are amazing, so I would definitely recommend walking away with a box of those bad boys!

Love the atmosphere of this restaurant! The food was amazing and it's a place where you can share small plates with other people! However, we didn't like how our server keeps rushing us to order food when we were in the middle of our conversation.

Oh my goodness this place has shot to the top of my list of favourites just from one visit there! From the moment I approached the place the atmosphere was so calming and beautiful. It is really easy to order with friendly and patient staff. Everything they have available is on display for you to choose from. The sandwich I had was one of the best I have ever had to date and I can’t stop thinking about it! Such a beautiful place with beautiful food and coffee. I already can’t wait to go back!

We really enjoyed our dinner at don’t tell dad. The food was delicious, especially the oxtail crumpets, truffle beignets and skate. It also came out so quickly and the service was really good. Our waitress (didn’t catch her name unfortunately) was super friendly and sweet. Would highly recommend visiting!

I’ve been by a couple of times since this place opened for coffee and pastries (the hazelnut and burnt butter croissant is amazing), so had to try the evening menu - which was nothing short of spectacular! We opted for the bread, the braised pork, and the pear, candied walnut and Comte salad to start, followed by the lamb and Guinea fowl for mains. Portion sizes were generous and flavours were incredible - just wish we had more room for dessert! Staff were really friendly, and the interiors were cosy yet sleek. Will definitely be back to try their menu again as it changes with the seasons! ⭐️

Super lovely evening in a gorgeous spot in Queen’s Park. We were looked after from the moment we arrived, placed in a great spot (and tbf, the whole restaurant is gorgeous) and looked after attentively, but not micromanaged, for the whole evening. The menu is interesting - short, to the point and you might find that there are no obvious ‘safe’ crowd pleasers but literally everything we had from the beignets, fish, salad and a trio of deserts, was thought out, super satisfying and good value for money. Even the house wine, often a signifier of how the restaurant views you, was fairly priced and delicious. At many more expensive, centre of town restaurants, we’ve had good service in a lovely setting but with the food being the weakest point. Don’t Tell Dad genuinely had it all, along with lovely staff and a great vibe. This is certainly somewhere I’d return to with pleasure, even if only to have the house white and a million beignets, all while stroking the plush green velvet banquettes.
