The Best Gifts for Wine Lovers, According to Sommeliers | Eater

"A small, hospitality-forward restaurant with an intimate dining table where efficient, well-designed tools matter; the co-owner and beverage director recommends compact, space-conscious decanters (which can double as water pitchers) as practical gifts, and also favors elegantly engineered wine keys that make opening bottles smoother and more enjoyable." - Jordan Michelman

Sad these 6 donuts with custard added to the maple bar's cost us $13. I will still come back but shoot. Prices have gone way up. I been coming here since the 90s and they use to slice that maple bar all the way across with a knife and fill the whole maple bar all the way across with custard. I got 2 lousy little bites.

Google
It’s very unfortunate that they charge $17 for a dozen, which btw is VERY EXPENSIVE for a mediocre donut. Mind you, I only got the plainest donuts and they were way over $1 each. I only had to get donuts here because it was on the way to work. I don’t remember the price being this expensive before. The service could have been a lot better by including smiles from the girl. Do yourselves a favor and save your monies!

We’ve been to a lot of shops getting donuts for the shop. Finally came here and we’re not going elsewhere from now on. Owners are super nice, donuts are great and packaged with love. Shop is ultra clean. Tip: Blueberry Old fashioned are the best donut anywhere.

Yelp
I have been going to Donut King for a while, almost 25 years. I knew the previous owner. Once in awhile i will pick up some donuts and this is where i always get them. They very good for new owners but I still love previous owners donuts. This morning (04Apr2025), I pick up two dozens donuts, the man charge $1.50 extra for one of the boxes, $18 and other regular price, $17. I asked the man, he told me if there more than four bars in the boxes is extra .50 each and another .50 cents for special donuts which wasn't told to me was extra charge. Really? That was the VERY FIRST time i ever heard of that. I was not made aware of extra charge on chocolate bar or spiral bar. I order two dozens pretty much the same with this owner and the previous owner. Yeah, i didn't find that amusing nor was I happy when i left the place. Is bad enough that everything is expensive now a days, which we all know but nickel and dime us...that irritates me. When its posted at $17 a dozens donut, it should be $17 whether is 2 or 12 bars or whatever is selected. There shouldn't be an additional costs. I understand the large donuts but bars was part of the $17 a dozens, and is NOT fill with cream. Donuts are good but make sure you ask the questions or you end up with a surprise and is NOT the donuts.

Yelp
The four delicious pastry's we ordered totaled to $7! They were fresh, not greasy, and huge enough to share. Loved the density of the old fashioned, sugar donut we got and the chocolate on our chocolate bar and chocolate old fashioned donut was rich and authentic flavored. Definitely reminded me of how well they used to make donuts when I was younger, without skimping on the good quality ingredients. (We ate all the donuts before remembering to take the picture.) The service was awesome and friendly. The ambiance was chill and inviting as well. This is the type of small business I love to stand behind and support. I highly recommend and definitely will be coming back!

Yelp

Yelp
I've purchased the same exact donuts and the price has varied, please use a calculator or the register because I'm tired of being charged $1 or $2 more for the same order I placed a few days ago.

Yelp
My family have been die hard Donut King customers since I was a kid. That unfortunately ended today. After buying about $45 worth of donuts and pastries, got home to find the eclair ,that I specially ordered after everything else, had no custard inside. That was the main reason for trip to Donut King this morning. So I called and after talking to the gentlemen he passed me off to speak to the young lady that helped us. She proceeded to tell me that eclairs don't have filling. I said yes they do other wise it's just a chocolate bar. I said well I've been coming here for years and I've always ordered an eclair and they would go to the back and come out with a chocolate bar filled with custard, she replies we fill them out front. Needless to say, we won't be going back. A simple we are sorry, come on back and we will get you an eclair would have made everything better. Instead, you chose to argue and give excuses and if you think an eclair isn't a filled pastry then maybe you are in the wrong business or should know your product better. Yep I said that, if this makes me a "Karen" then I'm a Karen.

Yelp
LOVE this little donut shop! The best service around. This small shop is open 7 days a week; you heard right! The hours vary by day of course. I recommend going early as the good donuts are gone fairly quickly (wink;wink..that says a lot) come here and get your donut fix ;)

Yelp
The Best Donuts in San Joaquin County! The owners are very gracious. The service is great

Yelp
Great donuts! If you like a particular specialty donut, get there EARLY or order ahead of time.

Yelp
My wife says this place is the "Mr. T's of Stockton" which is a huge compliment She said her Apple Fritter was the best she's ever had and was kind enough to share. As for the others they must have been even better because she didn't bother sharing those at all haha Came at about 5am, fresh donuts and good price, about $2.50 for their largest/gourmet donuts and $2 a dozen for Donuts Holes (also they have variety such as Glazed, Powder and Plain) Small store with seating inside, but the gentleman behind the counter was friendly and packaged my order quickly.

Yelp
We walked in at 1030am on a Saturday morning, were greeted immediately and chose 2 donuts. She immediately put them in a bag, charged us the $2.70 and we were on our way. Quick and friendly service is just what I like! And the donuts were delish! I remembered to take a photo of mine before I devoured the whole thing but my husband was too fast so I didn't get a pic of his blueberry cake donut. Both were delish. Highly recommend this place!

Yelp
Best and tasty donuts. Best and straight forward customer service. The place is cozy.

Yelp
Stopped by for a maple bar and it was delicious! The service was great, they are very kind! Definitely would go back for more donuts. Also liked how they had different donut holes to choose from, not just glazed.

Yelp
I wanted some crullers, so I stopped at Donut King relatively early (for me) on a Sunday morning (8-ish). Some of the photos posted on yelp showed crullers in the case, and I was primed. Sadly, no crullers. Had to settle for an apple fritter. It was so big, I had to split it with my wife. It was a delicious gut bomb that carried us through the day almost until dinner time. Easily the biggest fritter we've found in Stockton in quite a while, and as good as or better than the others, too. I'll probably check back every now and then for crullers. If I have to settle for an apple fritter, that's ok, too.

Yelp
The new ownership now offers a variety of fresh croissants moreover the customer service has been elevated to another level. Customers always get a warm welcome when they arrive and a sincere guest appreciation when they leave.

Yelp
Generic donuts . Standard ingredients.. BUT they do it right and don't overcharge. My favorite place in town.

Greg G.

Yelp
Friendly service, good prices, and the doughnuts are great! Plenty of variety and good cappuccinos too.

Yelp
I was greeted by the sweet woman who om guessing is the owner she was polite upbeat and she had the doughnut i was looking for i had this strong craving for a cinnamon roll and hers did not disappoint the selection was pretty scarce there were people buying multiple dozen boxes but the cinnamon roll selection was nice and full all for me lol

Yelp
THE ABSOLUTE BEST DONUTS IN TOWN!!! The blueberry cake is a MUST try. I've never had anything like it at any other donut shop. And the apple fritters are as big as your face! The shop is super clean and the service is very friendly. Since trying their donuts, I never go anywhere else! Make sure to get here early for the best pickings. This place is so popular that if you get here too late, they will be out of just about everything! Dammit, now I want a donut...

Yelp
So im visiting from east coast and was told this was the place i needed to go to tey real donuts. I bought 1 glazed donut and a coconut flavored donut. Not going to lie it was pretty amazing and better then anything i can find in north carolina. The staff was really friendly and plan to try something else before i go back east.

Irene C.

Yelp
Love the owners and the apple fritters! Been going here for years and being to work every few months.

Yelp
Nice fresh airy donuts. Not overly greasy and frosted nice and heavy. $11 a dozen. Fairly priced.

Yelp
Has always been the best donut place in Stockton. The maple cream filled is bomb! Hate that they close early but still one of my favorites over any others. Been around for a long time and I see why.

Yelp
If I could put ZERO stars I would. I've been here 3 seperate occasions and all three times the lady was RUDE (the one with the darker hair). First time, I thought oh the donuts were okay she was just having a bad day. 2nd time she told me the iced coffee machine was broken, and as I was being rung up the other lady used the machine. The last time, I went because the quarantine and everything else was closed. This was the worst because I asked could you put hot chocolate with French vanilla? She caught an attitude and said that will make the drink cold I said that's fine can I have ice since you guys sell iced coffee. She said ice machine was broken, I disregarded this comment and just asked for half chocolate and half vanilla. When the second lady came out she had an attitude spoke in a different language and made my drink. Here's the part where the zero stars would come into play, she said she was going to charge me for the price of two coffees because she had to put hot & cold coffee together. I paid I walked out and I will never take my business there again. I Cannot speak on behalf of the other lady but the darker haired woman was bad enough to make me never want to step foot in that plaza again. Her customer service is TERRIBLE and she should be ashamed of how she conducts herself.

Yelp
Great service, great donuts. It can get a little crowded but that speaks to how good these donuts are. The selection is great but get there early it gets busy fast.
google avatar

CeeCee T.

Yelp
I had bad bad bad cravings for a chocolate custard filled donut and this was the nearest shop at the time. I came around noon and there were still a few selections left. The one I chose didn't have filling and the lady was like "you want it filled? We can fill it for you?" So I was super happy!!!!!!!!!!!! And the donut wasn't oily or dripping with grease. And even though it had already cooled off it still was nice and soft and the custard wasn't too sweet either. Nice friendly customer service and the interior is pretty modern. There were a few regulars there having their coffee and reading the morning paper. I knew cuz the owner kept saying to the departing customers "see you tomorrow!" So hearing that made the place feel welcoming and homey. I want to come back in on an earlier time to see what other donuts they have.
google avatar

Don D.

Yelp
Stopped by for doughnut today and decided on a cinnamon roll and it was a good thing it was early because it was huge. I could have saved some for later but it was just too tasty. Come early and come hunger. The owners of this place are very nice and are very hard workers. It's hard to get up every morning early so that customers can have fresh doughnuts and coffee ready for their busy day. And if you stop by later around lunch time make sure try the teriyaki bowl. Some things never change and that's a great thing here at Doughnut King.
google avatar

Beka G.

Yelp
Best old-fashioned and buttermilk bars I've ever had. When we lived in town, we'd go every Sunday. Now we pick them up for breakfast whenever we visit the 209. Excellent crunch and flavor in the old fashioned/buttermilk type of donut.
google avatar

Shavonne B.

Yelp
This place ok, the doughnuts were pretty basic , I was expecting more selection. They had best of san Joaquin for 2016, so I guess I was expecting something really good. Their fridge was out , so no cold milk , that was a bummer. I will not be coming to this place again. There's really never a bad doughnut , but I have a major sweet tooth and these did not impress.
google avatar

Ryley A.

Yelp
Came here early in the morning to get a dozen donuts. I loved how quick it was- I was in and out in 5 minutes. Everyone loved the donuts.
google avatar

Yelp
I was craving a late night snack but then late night turned to early morning... 5 in the morning. Thank goodness Donut King is open this early... I stopped by and was surprised that other people were awake too! Most likely commuters stopping by before going off to work. I was greeted warmly by the other and he helped me out right away. The shop is cozy and I wouldn't have mind sitting down to enjoy some donuts and coffee. There's a decent selection of donuts (jelly filled, glazed, cake, fritters, sprinkles, etc). Pretty much anything you can find at your typical donut shop. Prices: Donut - $0.80 each but specialty ones cost more Half Dozen - $4.60 Dozen - $8.00 Overall, 3.5 stars!

Yelp
Must be going through a Sugar Imbalance or something... Two times consuming Donuts in One Week! And I wasn't even Bicycling yesterday! 2 1/2 Stars - Not for the same complaint in my previous review... but for the Donuts themselves. Filled Maple Bar (* 1/2 $1.50) Either Donut King does not know how to make Filled Maple Bars correctly... or the someone other than the owner made the last Filled Maple Bar left in the display case. I have to preface this critique that Filled Maple Bars with that Sugary-Sweet Custard filling IS my favorite item in a Donut shop. I've probably consumed more of those, by far, than my next favorites... Glazed Donut or a Glazed Twist, and then Sugar Donuts. I was never a Krispy Kreme fan. Today the only Filled Maple Bar left was actually cut in half from the side just to place the Custard Filling. You could have called this a Maple Bar Sandwich with Custard! As you can imagine the top and bottom of the Sandwich.... er, Maple Bar... was always sliding around. Messy, to say the least. I don't expect Donuts to be perfect, after all this is only a Donut shop, but I don't usually expect to use over a half dozen Napkins to "clean" myself up afterwards, either. Which brings up this question... Have you ever noticed that the places that serve Oily or Sticky food has the absolutely worst Napkins? Well, today was a double whammy! Donuts are both Oily AND Sticky! And you guessed it... Napkins thin as can be, and still could be called Napkins! C'mon, Donut King! You could do a lot better than this! large Coffee (*** 1/2 $1.40) I conversed with Donut King's owner about the move that happened over a month ago... I guess the owner of the building that formerly housed Donut King, who perchance is also the owner of the whole Shopping Center, had tentative plans to convert the structure into ANOTHER Starbuck's! Believe it or not! I guess the downturn in the economy and Starbuck's corporate decision to shut down Starbuck's locations rather than to expand resulted in them backing out of deal altogether. The interior of Donut King is VERY SMALL... Donut King contains only a few tables - one of them a four person table and the others can only seat two people. Pretty nice furniture, though... circular pseudo Marble tops on Oriental-style table legs. Looks like they were bought at Pier 1 or a similar retailer. The previous complaints I had written about... the mixture of aromas from Coffee and Southeast Asian cuisine does not apply in this new location... the owner moved the Teriyaki preparation area to the back of the building.

Yelp
Love love love these donuts! I didn't even realize this place was here till I searched on yelp. I wanted to pickup some donuts (other then Krispy Kreme) for my tenants / customers and I decided to come here. Amazing service, fast, and the place was packed! The price is decent for the donuts. The donuts are fresh and taste better than a lot of these places around here. My tenants love them too! I will be returning!
google avatar

Michael G.

Yelp
The best donuts in town. They are nice and fluffy. Take a glazed or any donut and line them up with other shops, theirs will look the best.
google avatar

Cherilynn H.

Yelp
This is my favorite donut shop. I go to other donut shops and I get frustrated when I don't get a King Donut. $11.00 for 1 dozen. Love the chocolate bar.
google avatar

Latoya W.

Yelp
Best donuts in Stockton! My favorite place to go to pick up fresh donuts. They are fluffy, tender and perfectly sweet! Would be splendid if they offered a wide variety of unique donuts. But overall they offer great service and delicious donuts.
google avatar

Shell T.

Yelp
Dry and old tasting I'm not sure if I came in on a bad day or if this is normal but haven't been back
google avatar

Tiffany S.

Yelp
Stopped by on the way to Sac since I was craving some donuts. Not bad!! I'm impressed even though we stopped by around 11:30 on a weekend so there wasn't much selection left. They still had my fav old fashioned though! Even the plain old fashioned was good. Super crunchy just the way I like it. $5.40 for a half dozen. Donut king, you da king!
google avatar

D B.

Yelp
I rate donut shops based on their Old Fashion donuts (besides Krispy Kreme since they offer none). This place has some of the better ones I've had and the service is prompt and quick even tho they can get a good line going in the mornings.
google avatar

Justin N.

Yelp
Originally wanted to go to Happy Lemon but it turns out it was closed since I arrived too early. Since I was on a rush, I thought about getting some doughnut instead. For one dollar per doughnut I was definitely not disappointed :)
google avatar

Joan T.

Yelp
DONUT Updaaaaate! So I stopped by yesterday to pick up a dozen for friends before we headed out to East Bay. I was greeted by a friendly man who boxed them up for me, and was even thoughtful enough to put a stack of napkins inside. Regular donuts are $0.75 each or $6.95 a dozen. So just get a dozen because no one ever eats just one. I usually go for the cake donut with chocolate icing & peanuts cause it was my favorite as a little girl. Those are always fresh and sweet, but never too sweet. Hey, kinda like someone I know! Haha, anyway ;) Oh and lastly, but most importantly, Donut King has moved locations. They're no longer located in that big, sketchy blue building. They are now BEHIND the big, sketchy blue building in a brand new store. So the first two paragraphs of my original review now holds no validity, darn. But I scoped out the new menu and the Chicken Teriyaki bowls are still in full effect!
google avatar

Meryl C.

Yelp
I've been coming here for my donut kick, and I love it! My go-to selection of donuts are rainbow sprinkled chocolate, sugar, glazed, and a maple bar. I love the doughy taste of the maple bar, the donut is soft and fluffy and the maple glaze is not too sweet. The rainbow sprinkled chocolate is my favorite because it is dense, slightly crisp at the edges but still soft in the rest of the donut. I usually come by when I get off work in the morning, so everything is really fresh. I only wish they had maybe something a little more exciting like bacon slices on a couple maple bars (do they do that already? I haven't seen it)... or maybe even a CRONUT! Does anyone in Stockton make these??!!

Yelp
While in town visiting family my wife and I got up early to get some Starbucks and decided to get donuts for the family. My sister in law told us there was only one place that made her favorite donut just the way she like it and this was the place. But my wife and I forgot the name of the place so we figured if it was as good a place as my sister in law said, it must have reviews, so we looked on Yelp and this place had good reviews, so we chanced this was the place, and it was! Whew! Unfortunately the "plain buttermilk donut" my sister in law wanted was so popular that they ran out at 7am on a Friday morning! So we got her a glazed, she like it-happy dance! :-) The bear claw donuts are HUGE! so are the Apple Fritters, they are as big as your face! LOL! The staff was very friendly and the shop and location very clean. They serve breakfast sandwiches too, We didn't have any bt they looked very good. We'll return here for donuts when in town, but we'll stick to our Starbucks for java! TC
