Must be going through a Sugar Imbalance or something... Two times consuming Donuts in One Week! And I wasn't even Bicycling yesterday!
2 1/2 Stars - Not for the same complaint in my previous review... but for the Donuts themselves.
Filled Maple Bar (* 1/2 $1.50) Either Donut King does not know how to make Filled Maple Bars correctly... or the someone other than the owner made the last Filled Maple Bar left in the display case. I have to preface this critique that Filled Maple Bars with that Sugary-Sweet Custard filling IS my favorite item in a Donut shop. I've probably consumed more of those, by far, than my next favorites... Glazed Donut or a Glazed Twist, and then Sugar Donuts. I was never a Krispy Kreme fan.
Today the only Filled Maple Bar left was actually cut in half from the side just to place the Custard Filling. You could have called this a Maple Bar Sandwich with Custard! As you can imagine the top and bottom of the Sandwich.... er, Maple Bar... was always sliding around. Messy, to say the least. I don't expect Donuts to be perfect, after all this is only a Donut shop, but I don't usually expect to use over a half dozen Napkins to "clean" myself up afterwards, either.
Which brings up this question... Have you ever noticed that the places that serve Oily or Sticky food has the absolutely worst Napkins? Well, today was a double whammy! Donuts are both Oily AND Sticky! And you guessed it... Napkins thin as can be, and still could be called Napkins!
C'mon, Donut King! You could do a lot better than this!
large Coffee (*** 1/2 $1.40)
I conversed with Donut King's owner about the move that happened over a month ago... I guess the owner of the building that formerly housed Donut King, who perchance is also the owner of the whole Shopping Center, had tentative plans to convert the structure into ANOTHER Starbuck's! Believe it or not! I guess the downturn in the economy and Starbuck's corporate decision to shut down Starbuck's locations rather than to expand resulted in them backing out of deal altogether.
The interior of Donut King is VERY SMALL... Donut King contains only a few tables - one of them a four person table and the others can only seat two people. Pretty nice furniture, though... circular pseudo Marble tops on Oriental-style table legs. Looks like they were bought at Pier 1 or a similar retailer.
The previous complaints I had written about... the mixture of aromas from Coffee and Southeast Asian cuisine does not apply in this new location... the owner moved the Teriyaki preparation area to the back of the building.
