10 Essential Denver Doughnut Shops | Eater Denver

"At the Donut Maker, the early bird is often the only one to get doughnuts. Though the store opens at 5 and closes at 11 a.m., Denverites arrive in the first few hours in droves to buy favorites like the cookies and cream doughnut. Specials change with the seasons and currently include a Reese’s peanut butter-filled bismark and apple pie bismark." - Camila Navarrette

Google
Consistently great donuts at a fair price. This has become our go-to spot for a donut fix thanks to their reliable selection of fresh, tasty donuts. The prices are reasonable, staff is always friendly, and the location is clean - just don’t come expecting trendy decor. I would give a full 5 stars, but we’ve had one or two stale donuts in the past (still tasty, just not as fresh). Overall, a solid and dependable local donut shop.

Google
Authentic donut place that has been open since '88.😮 Amazing donuts! Come grab a dozen or two, fresh and tasty! Office meetings, school events for kids? That's the place to go!

Peter Bartell

Google
If you can ignore the current renovation of their seating area, then you're in for a treat. Better variety than the big box donut place around the corner. And everything was yummy good. We tried different kinds and loved them all. Plus, the nice owner lady gave us free donut holes. Twice!

Google
At the Donut Maker, a locally owned establisment, I discovered a hidden gem in the donut universe. The woman working there was incredibly helpful, adding a personal touch to our visit in December 2023. Though seating was limited due to some ongoing construction, it was evident they were freshening up the place, promising a brighter ambiance in the future. Sure, Dunkin’ might be a stone’s throw away, but why settle for factory-made frozen donuts when you can relish the delight of freshly crafted ones? The appeal of the Donut Maker lies not just in its delicious donuts but in the commitment to providing something fresh and locally made, an experience worth savoring. Moses enthusiastically recommends the Donut Maker, despite its current construction state. This local gem promises a tasteful experience that’ll have you savoring every delightful bite.

Google
The online ordering is not reliable. I placed an online order of 2 dozen donuts and 7 specialty donuts. I didn't look to check if everything was there before leaving and I should have. Thw specialty donuts were all jumbled up and a mess and two specialty donuts were missing. Paying extra for someones special request donut for a work meeting and having it not be there is disappointing. No answer of the phone when I tried for a refund or to pick up the donuts later today. Over and over I called. How is someone supposed to place an order over the phone if no one answers? The parking lot was empty, it's not busy. The donuts are ok in taste, nothing special. The chocolate on the long john is so thin it barely tastes like chocolate. The pink icing is super thin as well.

Made my first visit today, a Friday around 0830. I decided to make a quick stop after my girlfriend shared her experience there from earlier in the morning. The atmosphere and prices remind me of simpler times, no chain gimmicks and a lot of love going into the business - since 1988. I was immediately greeted and helped by a kind woman, who I could tell really cared about her business and her customers. She threw in a free donut, which was delicious. I look forward to supporting this place more in the future!

Google
They have delicious and reasonably priced donuts. The shop is clean, it is a bit small, it is an older shop. I just take my food to go anyway. It's definitely worth the trip if you enjoy donuts.

Google
A MUST TRY! Stop just driving by and stop inside for a fresh breath away from chain stores and sky high prices. You won't be disappointed. This shop has been here for as long as I can remember (Approx 20 years) and still stands strong ! I believe even two of my family members have worked here over the years! Amazing service and even better donuts!

Yelp
One of the few GREAT donut shops in Colorado. I used to grab some for my team as it was on my way to work, now I long for the lemon poppyseed. Super chill spot, felt like a legit donut shop as soon as I walked in. Can't wait to get back there and grab a dozen.

Megan H.

Yelp
Great donuts in a local storefront. The owner was kind and the donuts were delicious! After passing by this place for a while, I'm glad we gave it a try.

Yelp
I am baffled this place has close to 5 stars. This place should be closed down! Zero stars. Cleanliness of this place there is none. Boxes, oil dirt dust, vegetable oil left out floors walls counters extremly dirty. Donuts looked inedible disgusting. Worse than the worst donuts I have ever seen. I can't even believe they would serve disgusting donuts like what I saw. DO NOT GO HERE! SHUT THIS PLACE DOWN!!!

Cassandra F.

Yelp
Friendly staff and great customer service with delicious options. I got a lemon poppy seed donut and a raspberry filled. She gave me a few donut holes too!

Yelp
Classic donuts. No frills. Reasonably priced. Friendly customer service. We just moved to the neighborhood and think we found our go-to donut spot.

Yelp
Donuts were ok but not 5 star as other yelpers have posted. Maple glaze was unrecognizable. Donuts seemed a little stale. Bought 30 donuts for $50. Disappointed.

Yelp
I am blown away right now. Stopped in for a doughnut and asked what they had that was interesting. The chef gave me a tour of everything in the case and there were some really creative flavors and names like Purple Rain and Sprite. I also got a sample that sold me on the waffle made with doughnut dough with all the holes filled with the most maple intense flavored frosting ever. So good. Also I noticed they were doing breakfast burritos and got one for good measure. Everything was homemade including a hot sauce that was spicy and flavorful. Go to this place. Talk to the staff and they will find something perfect for you.

Yelp
This place is amazing! Do yourself a favor and support your local donut shops! I came in here at around 6:30 and had the luxury of selection. I got an assorted dozen and two blueberry jams. The lady at the shop is so nice, she threw in a handful of donut holes! The donuts were super soft and airy, so much better than chains. The best thing is the price. For $10 and some change, be a hero at your workplace or at home!

Yelp
Door says they close at 12. Sign says they close at 1. It's 2 but open signs are still on. Hesitant to go in. Maybe they left them on by accident? Someone else goes in so I follow. Employee is extremely rude and unprofessional. Maybe have your hours open - close instead of certain hours.
google avatar

Yelp
Support a local business! You won't believe it (maybe you will), but there are two other donut shops in the same area as Donut Maker. But you will want to come here. The staff are always super friendly. On top of that, you have a wide range of tasty donuts that hit the spot on those morning when you need some extra sugar. And speaking of extra, they always throw in a few extra donut holes with your order. I'm so glad Donut Maker is my go-to for donuts. But get there early. Some favorites sell out fast!
google avatar

Yelp
Nice people but not-so-fresh donuts. Oh well, you can't win them all. Maybe I came on an off day.

Emily E.

Yelp
Wonderful donuts and pastries! The staff are very kind and helpful with any questions. These donuts will satisfy your craving.

Brandon S.

Yelp
In CO from MN and wanted to bring donuts to a morning meeting. Wow, their presentation is amazing, donuts are delicious and their customer service was top-notch. I highly recommend Donut Maker!

Yelp
I'm sooooo happy I came here before my flight back to Miami!! The staff alone made the trip worth it. #1 piece of advice: GET HERE EARLY! They open at 5am... I got here at 8:45am and there was literally 12 donuts left and most of them were plain glazed. I'm just happy that the few "fun" flavors they had left were ones that I actually liked. I got the mint chocolate, raspberry filled, and a sample of their blueberry filled... Can't decide which I like most but what I can say is that I totally see what all the hype is about. The donuts are soft, airy, fluffy, sweet but not fake and overpoweringly sweet... Just pure deliciousness. Do yourself a favor and give this place a shot!! You won't be disappointed!!!
google avatar

Michael W.

Yelp
I don't know which is sweeter, the donuts or the lady that works in the mornings! What a doll she is! Always giving me a few extra donut holes and being as nice as can be at some of the most wretched hours of the day! The glazed donuts are by far, the BEST around! With as many donuts as I consume, please trust me when I make this claim! They are so fluffy and perfectly sweet! I want to become a diabetic from shoving 9 of these down my throat each time I find a reason to travel the 10 miles each way to get a box of these glorious morsels! I would walk naked in the snow if I had to. It would be so worth it! She's open before the chickens get up so traffic is light. Make the journey - it's worth it!

David W.

Yelp
I picked up late right before close, as expected selection was limited, what was available was stale and dry. Paid full price. Was first and last visit. Dunkin or even King Soopers is so much better.
google avatar

Gayle L.

Yelp
Good donuts and a really nice lady behind the counter! I picked up a couple donuts for me and a couple for my husband. The lemon poppyseed was good as well as the chocolate frosted cake and chocolate frosted glazed. I recommend a visit when you are craving donuts!
google avatar

Yelp
Came here last week and met the lovely owner. Donuts were fresh and delicious! My new favorite in Colorado!

Yelp
Wow! First visit. I am so impressed! Almost thought I was going the wrong way after seeing a dunkin chain on Arapahoe. Came in at about 730 am on a Thursday morning. No wait. Smelled insanely delicious & appetizing variety of combos Ordered a cinnamon twist glazed, filled coconut creme, and a raspberry filled. Coconut was not my thing but would probably like it powdered. Raspberry was spot on. They threw in some blueberry holes for driving safety hahaha. Blueberry holes were the best blueberry cake donut I have ever had. The texture, sweetness, flavor was so good. & they were much appreciated!! Dough is so delicious, fluffy, not chewy at all!!! So good. Not overly sweet. So good!! Didn't care for the coffee & fixings- No half & half only sweet individual creamers.

Yelp
I picked this place because it's halfway between my home and office and makes it an excellent stop on the way to work. I walked in and there was another person in front of me who was paying. The lady behind the counter told me it would be a few moments and then apologized for the delay-which it wasn't that delayed. There were so many donut options to choose from I just started pointing at them. They had some very interesting flavors like lemon poppy seed and maple and they were all delicious. Everyone in my office is being healthy and sticking to their new years resolutions so I ate most of them-not even made about it. I got a baker's dozen (which is 13!!!) and she threw in some delicious donut holes too. I got a refill on my coffee and for all of that it was less than $15. What a deal! The donuts were fresh and delicious. I'll def be back for more donuts but I'll be sure to get maybe half a dozen so I'm not stuck eating them all-my pants will thank you.

Yelp
Wow... I stopped in here to grab some donuts to bring to a morning meeting at the office, figuring the local shop would be superior to the dunken shop nearby, and I was blown away! These are some superb donughts! The specialty offerings they have will blow your mind, and just bringing them into the plant made me the most popular guy around! Be a hero in your workplace and grab some of these. Seriously, there was nearly a fight over these things. I had to come back and get 3 dozen more to satisfy everyone! Also, the staff was incredibly kind and welcoming. If you're in the area, and could use a bit of sweet with your morning coffee, be sure to stop in here!

MaryEllen M.

Yelp
Very good traditional donuts! Go somewhere else if you want a boujee donut to go with your extra skim mocha caramel five shot venti cap. This is where the working class goes for a good ole donut before washing it down with cup of Folgers laced with coffee grounds.
google avatar

Yelp
Donuts! What more needs to be said? Well, get here early because they do run out of items pretty quickly. I arrived here today (Friday), probably one of their most popular days, around 8:45 am and there were quite a few people ahead of me, patiently waiting. I was worried that they would run out of donuts, but it all worked out. There was a huge variety of donuts, from the regular and chocolate glazed donuts, plain and glazed old-fashioned, raspberry or plain glazed French crullers, bear claws, cake donuts with sprinkles, maple glazes and anything else your heart desires. The specialty donuts and flavors were mostly gone, but I managed to snag a lemon zest donut that looked like a glazed donut with lemon filling and topped with lemon zest. I pronounce it delicious! Prices were reasonable. I think I purchased 18-20 donuts for $16 with tax. This donut shop is located near Dayton & Arapahoe in a strip mall shopping center and is open from 5A-11 A. They also serve coffee here, but not sure if it was just drip coffee. They didn't appear to have fancy coffee, if that's your bag. They also threw in some donut holes too, which was just icing on the ca . . err, donut. :-)

Pixie M.

Yelp
Stopped over at The Samurai for sushi with a friend.....and completely forgot they aren't open for lunch on Saturday. So what are two girls to do? Go to the donut shop in the same strip. Being mid-afternoon, there weren't a huge number left -- which in my book is a good sign in a donut shop. Really enjoyed the old-fashioned, cake style with chocolate on top. The donut was moist, fresh tasting and the chocolate was just the right texture and amount. And who doesn't love a donut covered in Fruity Pebbles or Coco-Krisps? I can't wait for tomorrow morning to have the rest of them in the box.

Chad L.

Yelp
Amazing donuts and the staff is super friendly! My kids are now always asking to go back to this donut shop.
google avatar

Allan T.

Yelp
Best donuts in the state! Might not be as pleasing to the eye of some places but it well were the hidden jewel that's fully operational and they're putting in the work to make some of the best donuts ever
google avatar

Walter P.

Yelp
This place is amazing. If you need to brighten your day and satisfy a donut craving you will mot go wrong. The owners are local and incredible. They are a hidden gem in the metro area. Will be back many times for our donut fix.

Linda P.

Yelp
I ordered a dozen donuts from this place. i had grub hub deliver them. $24. I got a glaze type donuts. no cake donuts. The donuts were not fresh and tasted like they were a day old. We threw them out. Do not order for delivery. You will be wasting your money.

Yelp
DONUT DELIGHT part 2 Next on the donut list was Donut Maker a few miles further. Using the same benchmark as in part 1 (apple fritter and old fashioned). I didn't get coffee since they served the same coffee as the place in part 1. The old fashioned wasn't bad but it had an underlying sourness to the sour cream cake flavor. Slightly off putting to me but some may enjoy this. The charming friendly lady behind the counter was chatty and fun. She threw in a few freebies (donut holes and a cherry cake donut with vanilla icing - the donut wizards had created the night before). She asked if I wanted a crispy or soft fritter and I chose crispy. The fritter ended up being super soft. And I missed the apple. But again some may prefer this. I will say at this point the donut holes (namely the blueberry) and the cherry vanilla donut were AMAZEBALLS though. Made me re think my benchmark. Some places do some things really well and the cover doesn't do the book justice! Donut Maker gets the extra star for style points, friendliness and freebies. It's hard to skip that.
google avatar

Cassie P.

Yelp
What better way to start off your morning than with a friendly face ready to serve you freshly baked donuts? And trust me, it'll have to be the start of your morning if you want the best pick because these things go fast! I've tried just about every variety and they all satisfy any doughnut craving. My personal favorite are the cake doughnuts while my brother loves the chocolate glazed ones and my mom always goes for the cinnamon rolls. This is definitely a hidden gem that anybody who likes a nice doughnut with their coffee should definitely scope out!
google avatar

Mike S.

Yelp
I agree with all the 5-Star ratings; had a great donut today. My critique of losing a star came from the perceived less than acceptable cleanliness of the store itself. While I am fully confident in the quality of what they make, the store does not invite you to sit and enjoy your purchases. Hopefully the owners of 30 years will make the effort to spruce up the place!
google avatar

Kelsey G.

Yelp
Seriously the best donuts. Always friendly workers. Speedy and excellent service. The glazed sour cream donuts are literally incredible. They are not too sweet, not too plain, crumble perfectly when you break. Both the arapahoe and evans locations are convenient to get to - nothing fancy on the outside - but why would you want fancy on the outside when you have amazing donuts on the inside!? GO HERE! Get a donut. Do it.
google avatar

Allen J.

Yelp
This mom and pop shop is the best! They have all you need in a donut shop from all of the basics to great coffee. I love old fashions and you will not find a better one than the one at the Donut Maker. Very, very nice owners too!
google avatar

Noah G.

Yelp
Far and away the best donuts in Metro Denver with incredibly friendly staff and ownership. I searched for years for an old school donut shop that focused on the classics and came up empty handed. I finally stumbled upon the old satellite location at I-25 and Evans a couple years back and have rarely missed a weekend trip since. How do you test the quality of a donut shop? The old fashioned sour creme. The Donut Maker's is near perfection, rivaling Bob's in SF and Dinkel's in Chicago. Crispy on the outside and light and fluffy on the inside, it's everything you want. Throw in excellent cake and raised donuts without all the trendy garbage you see everywhere else, and you're in Donut Heaven. Don't waste your time anywhere else.
google avatar

Marissa H.

Yelp
This shop might not look like much, but the donuts are delicious! They have a wide variety of flavors and choices. My only recommendation is that you get there as early as you can because they do get picked over quickly! But hey-- that's a sign of some yummy donuts!
google avatar

Rachel B.

Yelp
We were watching Donut Showdown and decided to search for the nearest donut shop to the DTC, and found the Donut Maker. Unfortunately it was closed since it was Easter Sunday thankfully the owner, Ryan, greeted us and provided us with the donuts we were craving. The donuts were amazing and I can't wait to go back. Also I can't believe the unbelievable service. Easily 5 stars.
google avatar

Hanh P.

Yelp
Came in at 8:30am... they had 7 glazed and 2 long John's left. I took everything... donuts were NOT Fresh at all... cold... very dry. This is my second time getting donuts here. First time was equally disappointing. I don't understand the Yelp reviews. Not sure if I'll ever be back.
google avatar

Jessica J.

Yelp
I went in yesterday with the intent of placing an order of 3 dozen donuts for a baby shower the next day. Julie was so awesome! She told me that I didn't need to put an order in, and that she would take care of it for me. I went in today and she had a nice assortment all ready. The donuts were fresh and tasty. The customer service was awesome, and I will definitely be back.
google avatar

Christopher G.

Yelp
Very close to Dunkin, but so very different Dunkin experience - Bake your doughnuts in a factory, partially freeze, ship long distance, and warm up. I lived in CT for multiple years and always was hurt by the lack of good donuts. It hurt. My fear is that these crappy doughnuts from Dunkin will turn Denver into the doughnut wasteland that is CT. Only time will tell. Donut Maker is everything Dunkin isn't. All doughnuts are made fresh, on premise, and daily. The people working there have been working there for years. The selection is always interesting, and they normally have my favorite - a chocolate glazed long john with vanilla cream. They are always friendly, and they always throw in a couple doughnut holes for the kids. I, for one, may buy coffee from Dunkin but for Doughnuts i'll be here or the Donut (further down Arapaho toward the mountains)
google avatar

Noah P.

Yelp
I ordered a dozen donuts and ended up with probably fourteen and as many donut holes as could fit in the box. The incredibly friendly owners gave me a ton of freebies, and it seemed like they were loading everyone up who came in. While these donuts weren't the best I have had, I will definitely be a repeat customer for donuts destined to the office
google avatar

Demitri R.

Yelp
I have drove by this place for years. Never been inside until today when i really wanted a donut. MMM Delicious. The Chocolate Milk could of came in a bigger bottle but i made it work. lol. I had a Creme filled donut and a glazed. Now that i ate this one, the glazed at 711 just doesnt taste right. Nor does their long johns. The Owner and everyone inside talked to me like they knew me for years. Before i left i tried a Blueberry Muffin Top. They arent on the menu yet but so Yummly. Reminds of of Kramer and George making muffin tops. To Hell with Lamars. I know where im going when i want a donut and where ill always feel like family now.
google avatar

Donnie B.

Yelp
I've been going here for years, I've tried other shops but I always return to the best! You'll never be disappointed, unless you arrive late and they are sold out of your favorite. Support the locals!
google avatar

Felicia F.

Yelp
Seriously the best donuts around. Last year we ordered ten dozen and made a donut cake for our wedding. I also stop here once a week to bring donuts to work. The lemon poppy seed is a favorite. Also have blueberry, smores, and maple bacon.

Dennis S.

Yelp
This place is wonderful. The donuts are fresh and tasty and the service is warm and welcoming. You can't go wrong going here. Every type of donut is delicious!!
google avatar

Celine F.

Yelp
Just moved to the area and wanted to bring some goodies to work this morning. Boy am I glad I stopped in here. There is something to be said about not going to the big manufactured donut shops. These are the real deal.
google avatar

Joyze S.

Yelp
Service was friendly and that's the only reason I'm giving 2 stars. Pulled up and the blinds are all messed up, the floors were wet and dirty, and the place smelled like dirty mop water. All three tables were dirty, and the chair/table legs had a layer of black gunk around them which suggests this place hasn't had a good scrub down in years. Selection was decent considering it was 9 am when we got there, but my original glazed donut was stale and dry. My husband got the cinnamon toast crunch and it was also dry. As we were eating, the guy wiped down the tables with a rag and then shook off the rag right next to us! That explains the dirty smelly floor. We threw away the 2 other donuts we bought and will NOT be coming back. Stay away unless you like unsanitary eating conditions and stale dry donuts.

Mimi S.

Yelp
This used to be our neighborhood go-to. It has gone through a few owners in the last eight years, and even though this current owner is a sweet lady, the donuts have really done downhill. We gave them one last try a week ago and it was extremely disappointing. Won't be back.
google avatar

Melissa W.

Yelp
Went here this morning bc my 3 year old woke up begging for donuts. We just moved to the area so I googled donuts and this place popped up! Upon seeing they had high star reviews we decided to check it out. The staff was super helpful and friendly (I think the owner may have helped us) I had my 3 year old and 8 month old with me and the gentleman helping us was even so kind as to carry our donuts out to the car for me! Got home and every single donut we got was delicious, my favorite was the blueberry cake and the maple bacon. Both had just the right amount of sweetness and practically melted in my mouth. We will definitely make this a regular spot for us!
google avatar

Chelsey S.

Yelp
I love their donuts and they are open nice and early! There's never a line and prices are CHEAP!! All my colleagues always ask where the donuts are from when I bring these in!!
