Yelp
I visited The Donut Shoppe late on a Saturday morning after calling in an order the night before to their answering machine, per the many recommendations on Yelp. I was pleased to receive exactly what I wanted, but they still had a substantial selection to choose from when I arrived around 11 a.m.
The shop itself is my favorite kind of donut shop, a throwback that's been around for decades and focuses on traditional donuts and coffee. The staff was efficient and friendly enough.
I ordered 13 donuts, two Uglies (apple fritters), and a cup of coffee. As with most old-fashioned donut shops, the coffee was ok, but nothing special.
The Uglies seem to be the signature item at the Donut Shoppe, and were utterly spectacular. These fritters were huge, sweet, crispy on the outside, with plenty of apple pieces, and properly cooked on the inside (and believe me, I've had my share or apple fritters that were raw in the middle, so this needs to be called out). If you are a fan of apple fritters, you must try these, they are well worth it (note that they are not included in the standard dozen donuts). I will go out of my way to have these again.
Their glazed donuts are solid, light in texture with a pleasant level of sweetness. I wasn't a big fan of the chocolate covered sprinkled glazed donut, as the large amount of very crunchy sprinkles overwhelmed the flavor of the chocolate glaze and the donut itself, but if you are a sprinkle fanatic, you'll be all about it. Their cinnamon roll was sweet, light, and had a strong cinnamon flavor. This was my second favorite donut to the apple fritter, and I would recommend it.
Cake donuts are my absolute favorite type of donut. To me, a perfect cake donut is crispy on the outside, and soft and sweet on the inside. Unfortunately, the cake donuts at the Donut Shoppe are super soft and don't have all that much flavor, more like an Entenmann's than what you would expect from a local shop.
For their cake donuts, I had: plain, coconut, chocolate covered, apple cinnamon filled, and a honey twist stick. The honey twist stick was the best of the bunch. It was sweet and had some crunch on the exterior, but all of their other donuts were soft and lacking flavor. Even still, I'll try a couple of cake donuts the next time I visit just in case they were having an off day.
If you're going through Jacksonville and are looking for an outstanding donut, hit up the Donut Shoppe for some Uglies and cinnamon rolls, and your sweet tooth will be satisfied.
